The Matt Walsh Show - Matt Walsh Ranks The Top 5 Most OVERRATED Films

00:00:00.000 we're rolling yeah today we're going to run down a list of the five most overrated films of all

00:00:10.800 time now this is the definitive list there can be no argument no discussion we should turn off

00:00:15.760 comments on youtube because this list is so verifiably correct that there's really nothing

00:00:20.240 to talk about now one thing to remember as we proceed is this overrated does not mean bad so

00:00:25.980 i'm not saying that the films on this list are bad some of them are but not all of them overrated

00:00:31.680 just means that they aren't as good as people make them out to be their reputation is greater

00:00:35.340 than the actual product on the screen so uh let's begin number five shawshank redemption now this is

00:00:42.480 not a bad film it is in fact it's a pretty good film but it has gained the reputation of a cinematic

00:00:47.240 masterpiece mostly because millennials grew up watching the movie on tnt where it aired approximately

00:00:52.620 46 times a week and shawshank is a it's a fine story uh it's a well-told story but it's also

00:00:59.620 incredibly cliched overwrought quite cheesy extremely predictable every character is a walking archetype

00:01:06.020 uh every story beat can be seen from a mile away the movie doesn't do anything new or different with

00:01:11.280 the prison drama format except sanitize it so shawshank is to prison movies what remember the

00:01:16.520 titans is to football movies they're both massively overrated uh not even the best versions of their

00:01:22.200 particular sub-genre much less are they in the conversation for the greatest movies of all time

00:01:26.900 my biggest problem though with shawshank is that the inmates are all the nicest most decent human

00:01:32.340 beings you could ever meet minus the two who are rapists it's your world boss all the rest of them

00:01:40.080 are kind sensitive friendly souls they hang out they play board games they go to the library they start

00:01:46.680 a book club they run a lemonade stand out front uh not all that actually happens in the movie but

00:01:51.600 it could have happened so if not for the evil warden and the couple of rapists shawshank actually 0.53

00:01:57.120 seems like not a bad place to spend time like it's not even clear why tim robbins wants to escape so

00:02:02.060 badly so and that takes away from a lot of the drama uh and the tension number four toy story now again

00:02:09.880 a good film for what it is it's one of the best kids movies in the last three decades it's just not

00:02:14.760 good enough to warrant three sequels with a fourth on the way no my main problem with toy story is uh

00:02:22.280 the villain sid who's like the supposedly evil child living next door in the first toy story film

00:02:27.220 but what is sid's great crime like what did he do wrong he he takes apart his toys and reassembles them

00:02:33.640 this makes him a bad person he didn't know the toys were alive so how could you blame him for that

00:02:39.320 he thought they were inanimate objects how can we blame him for his treatment of inanimate objects 0.97

00:02:44.560 like if it turns out that my chair is actually alive am i suddenly a scumbag for sitting on it

00:02:49.240 all these years so in fact sid is arguably a more sympathetic character than andy sid is creative

00:02:55.820 he takes old toys and turns them into into like new shapes and interesting creatures meanwhile andy

00:03:01.560 forms very unhealthy fixations on his toys never does anything interesting or creative with them

00:03:06.220 and like there's nothing wrong with a child having a toy but it's like it's a bit overboard

00:03:10.160 okay you're a little bit too old to be this attached to your toys andy well whatever right i mean

00:03:17.000 it is it's just it's time to grow up so it may seem unfair for me to rate toy story as overrated

00:03:21.780 just for this reason but this is my list and i'll do what i want like i said we're not talking about

00:03:25.460 it your comments are not welcome i don't care what you think this is this is just the truth uh number

00:03:30.640 three the dark knight now once again good film it just isn't the masterpiece that people make it

00:03:37.180 out to be without heath ledger's great performance this movie wouldn't be remembered for anything in

00:03:42.140 particular like take keith ledger out of it what does anyone remember about this movie who cares

00:03:46.580 about this movie except for that it's great by batman movie standards but it's not great as a piece of

00:03:51.540 cinema and i thought my jokes were bad for example how does the joker wire an entire hospital with

00:03:59.020 enough explosives to demolish it in 15 seconds without anyone noticing how this is a working hospital

00:04:05.420 people are in it 24 hours a day seven days a week how did you you wired the whole thing it's not even

00:04:09.880 just like one part of it explodes the whole thing is taken down now get ready for the ball now the

00:04:16.360 movie hopes that you won't notice that problem because you'll be distracted by like the moment in

00:04:20.320 the hospital when joker shows up in two faces room wearing a surgical mask and isn't noticed by two

00:04:26.820 face until he takes the mask off but even with the mask on you can still tell that he has white face paint

00:04:31.840 and black paint around his eyes so how did two face the criminal genius not notice that well

00:04:36.300 maybe it's because two face isn't a criminal genius in this he's a villain for about a half a scene

00:04:40.640 and then he's dead it's like christopher nolan forgot to include two face they're about to put the

00:04:45.000 movie out you know it's like a week and the movie's gonna come out and someone says well we forgot we're

00:04:48.260 gonna put two face in this thing oh yeah then they gotta go back and they just add two face in

00:04:51.920 and you can just take two face out and it doesn't change anything in the movie at all

00:04:55.820 harvey i'm sorry but my biggest issue is the end when joker somehow wires two boats two ferries with

00:05:04.360 uh explosives again nobody knows how he did this and then the passengers on each boat are told that

00:05:09.240 they have to press a button and blow the other boat up before uh their own boat explodes and one of the

00:05:16.140 boats is full of convicted criminals right and then of course all the criminals band together and decide to

00:05:21.220 do the right thing and not blow up the other boat they said okay come on guys let's do the right

00:05:25.860 come on folks hey fellas come on let's let's do the right thing here because we all know that

00:05:31.380 criminals are renowned for their humanity and generosity and lack of self-interest maybe these

00:05:36.360 were all inmates uh you know from shawshank like maybe that they just so happen to be the nicest

00:05:41.140 criminals ever happen to be on this boat so the movie just didn't have the courage of its convictions

00:05:48.060 that's what i didn't like about let me ask you something what if there was someone out there who

00:05:51.680 kept a log of every single thing you did every minute of the day i think that'd be pretty creepy

00:05:55.760 well what if i told you that's exactly what happens every time you go online your internet provider like

00:06:00.100 at&t or verizon is allowed to store logs of every website you've ever visited and can legally sell

00:06:05.320 this data to anyone that's why i always use expressvpn expressvpn reroutes your internet connection

00:06:11.040 through the secure servers so your internet provider can't see or log what you do online now many of you

00:06:15.980 might be wondering well if i'm uh routing all of my data through a vpn then that doesn't uh doesn't

00:06:20.280 that just mean the vpn can see what i'm doing and log my data instead you're right to think that many

00:06:24.480 vpns do claim to have a no logs policy but then they've been caught logging customers activity anyway

00:06:28.860 expressvpn is the exception though because they're the only vpn that i trust and that uses trusted server

00:06:35.500 technology they were the first major vpn provider to engineer all of their vpn servers to run on ram

00:06:40.680 only this makes it impossible for their vpn servers to store any data including logs of any

00:06:45.920 expressvpn customer and you don't have to take my or expressvpn's word for it expressvpn is so

00:06:51.260 confident in their no logs claim they even have one of the biggest assurance firms pwc audit their

00:06:56.900 technology it's no wonder that cnet and the verge named expressvpn the number one vpn in the world

00:07:02.040 stop letting people keep logs of what you do online visit expressvpn.com slash walshyt that's

00:07:07.980 exprssvpn.com slash walshyt you can get an extra three months free expressvpn.com slash walshyt

00:07:16.240 number two uh marvel movies all of them the whole marvel movie canon they are all overrated because

00:07:23.140 they're all rated as being at least better than cinematic slop which is what they are all are

00:07:29.500 okay all they're all bad like every single marvel movie is bad there's never been a good one i hate to

00:07:35.140 tell you the original iron man is really really great so the original guardian of the galaxy was

00:07:39.260 a real breath of fresh air ant-man is wildly underrated to me doctor strange 2016 again

00:07:44.440 enjoyable and thor ragnarok is just pure silly the marvel superhero franchise started out with like 0.98

00:07:49.560 silly dumb movies that were silly and dumb but at least kind of fun in a very brainless 0.94

00:07:54.060 bordering on mind numbing way but then as the films kept getting churned out they got longer and longer 0.99

00:08:00.420 and more redundant and lazier like by the end of this whole run each movie is six and a half hours

00:08:06.900 long and it's but it's the same like somehow every movie is the same as the last one but longer

00:08:13.360 aside from that the movies have no stakes in this problem became more pronounced as they started adding

00:08:19.980 multiple universes and so on until there were so many realities and so many universes that nothing that

00:08:25.740 happened in any particular universe matters anymore you can kill off somebody in one universe there's an

00:08:30.920 infinite supply of new versions to replace them so who gives a then at that point see what i mean

00:08:35.920 not very bright you know in the old days a superhero was fighting a villain who wanted to you know maybe

00:08:42.520 take over a city or something but then it's like okay now they're they want to destroy a whole planet and

00:08:47.380 then they're going to destroy a whole galaxy and then eventually he's like he's going to destroy the

00:08:51.380 whole universe except that that doesn't even matter because this is one universe of a trillion and so

00:08:56.580 who cares about this universe but the writing was so bad and so lazy that even the threat of universal

00:09:02.360 destruction wasn't enough to create any real emotional investment in the story number one the most

00:09:09.600 overrated film of all time is star wars oh it's fine it's decent it's not deserving of the worshipful

00:09:18.000 praise it receives and it certainly does not warrant the 10 billion trillion films and shows and everything

00:09:22.640 else that came after them it's not true the original star wars movies were solid b movies

00:09:28.560 that's impossible the acting's pretty poor especially by mark hamill really really bad acting

00:09:34.160 the script is is kind of cheesy and derivative in parts and i say derivative not because oh

00:09:39.160 you know everything after star wars is ripping it off so i'm just used to it

00:09:42.620 no even star wars when it came out was derivative of sci-fi that had come before it

00:09:46.980 like it actually was not doing anything all that new and and you know but that's fine darth vader is

00:09:51.980 a 12 year old boy's idea of a scary villain like he's not actually menacing and he doesn't create

00:09:57.260 real tension like if i'm in a room and darth vader walks in i'm not gonna be that scared like i'm sorry

00:10:03.660 i'm not that scared you got the again again with the cape the first thing i'm thinking is like why are 0.73

00:10:08.320 you wearing it you're a dork already because you're walking around in a cape you don't need to have the

00:10:11.400 cape on and uh and i'm just not like i'm not that scary sorry anton chigur walks in i'm scared okay 0.98

00:10:17.580 i'm scared by that guy

00:10:18.840 a bunch of 12 year old boys watch those movies when they came out in the 70s and 80s

00:10:27.300 and and love them which is understandable but then they grew up and they insisted that the movies are

00:10:33.200 still as great as they remember them being when they were 12 and that's the problem nothing is as

00:10:39.000 good as you thought it was when you were 12 okay you were 12 okay all right you think you can do this

00:10:46.600 to me and star wars is the same way now you all need to grow up and realize that the answer is never

00:10:54.860 do you hear me never ever

00:10:57.500 you

00:11:07.100 you

00:11:09.100 you
