00:09:15.840We will never arrest our way out of issues such as homelessness and mental health.
00:09:21.080Irina's alleged killer, DeCarlos Brown Jr., arrested many times before, 14 times in fact,
00:09:27.300including for felony larceny, robbery, and assault.
00:09:30.280He was known by local law enforcement to have schizophrenia.
00:09:33.440But despite the long criminal record, the documented mental health concerns and the obvious warning signs, Brown was still free to board Charlotte's light rail in August, where police say he stabbed Zarutska to death in an unprovoked attack.
00:09:49.040Brown now facing state and federal charges, including first-degree murder, though the case has been delayed after psychiatric evaluations found him mentally incompetent to stand trial.
00:09:58.600Just weeks after the killing, Mayor Lyles bizarrely suggesting to local outlet WBTV that the horrific slaying made her a better mayor.
00:10:08.200I know what loss is about. And so sometimes we have to remember that even though when we're working together, that there's a lot more to do and to work around and get done.
00:10:21.980And I will never forget this loss. I will never forget it. It has been something that's difficult for me, but also something that has made me a better mayor for the people of the city.
00:10:38.960Despite the backlash, Lyles faced little political consequence at home, easily winning re-election in November with more than 70 percent of the vote.
00:10:47.540The Charlotte City Council will now appoint an interim mayor to finish the term.
00:10:53.880Coming up, a deadly hantavirus on board a cruise ship,
00:10:57.940triggering a global race to track passengers who left the vessel
00:11:01.380before they knew they may have been exposed.
00:11:04.080And Secretary of State Marco Rubio receives a warm welcome at the Vatican,
00:11:08.460meeting with the Pope and senior officials as tensions linger over the Middle East.

00:12:23.800here on the MK Show. Health officials racing to track passengers across multiple countries as a
00:12:31.320deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard an expedition cruise ship leaves three people dead and at least
00:12:37.080five more infected, with dozens of travelers already disembarking the vessel and flying home
00:12:42.720before they knew they may have been exposed. Hantavirus spreads primarily through contact
00:12:47.880with infected rodent waste. On Wednesday, officials confirming the particular strain
00:12:52.940in this outbreak is the Andes, one of the deadliest variants with about a 40% fatality rate
00:12:59.560and the only known strain that can pass from person to person. The Dutch-flagged MV Hondias
00:13:06.480departing April 1st on a weeks-long excursion, starting in Argentina at the southern tip of the
00:13:12.340continent, sailing north up the Atlantic Ocean, stopping at some of the world's most remote
00:13:17.420island destinations. Trouble beginning aboard the ship on April 6th, when a 70-year-old Dutch
00:13:23.500passenger fell ill and died five days later of respiratory distress, according to the WHO.
00:13:30.440His wife also becoming severely ill, leaving the ship in late April and later dying in Johannes
00:13:36.400where officials confirmed she had Hantavirus. She had briefly boarded a flight in Johannesburg
00:13:43.420but was removed from the aircraft before takeoff due to her condition. A KLM flight attendant who
00:13:49.400had brief contact with her on the plane now in isolation at a hospital in Amsterdam with mild
00:13:55.180symptoms and is being tested for Hantavirus. Argentine officials believe the couple may have
00:14:00.640contracted the virus prior to the cruise during a bird-watching tour that stopped at a landfill
00:14:06.660where they may have encountered infected rodents, according to the AP. Ugh. Several more passengers
00:14:13.920contracting the virus, including a third who died on board. Earlier this week, a medical team
00:14:19.040dispatched to the ship. The doctor's now conducting medical assessments on everyone on board as the
00:14:24.320ship sails to the Canary Islands, expected to arrive by Sunday. Once the MV Hondias arrives
00:14:30.700at its destination, Spanish citizens and anyone showing symptoms will be quarantined,
00:14:36.500according to Spanish health minister Monica Garcia. Everyone else will be allowed to return
00:14:41.540home. The World Health Organization holding a press conference yesterday, its director general
00:14:47.180informing reporters that none of the remaining passengers on the ship is currently symptomatic,
00:14:52.560but it is possible more cases could develop because it can take up to six weeks for symptoms
00:14:58.220to develop in the infected. An international effort is now underway to trace and monitor
00:15:03.180at least 30 passengers from multiple countries who left the ship in late April before any of
00:15:09.480the cases had been confirmed as hantavirus. Swiss officials confirming a man who had been
00:15:15.100on the earlier leg of the voyage now hospitalized in Zurich with hantavirus, marking the first
00:15:21.220known case tied to the ship, where symptoms developed after the traveler had already returned
00:15:26.720home. In the U.S., health officials in at least five states are now monitoring passengers who
00:15:32.820were aboard the MV Hondias, including two Texas residents, one in Virginia, two in Georgia,
00:15:39.300one in Arizona, and at least one in California, with none so far reporting symptoms. Despite the
00:15:45.700deadly nature of the outbreak, Dr. Maria van Kerkhove, the WHO's Director of Epidemic and
00:15:51.780Pandemic Preparedness, urging the public to keep the risk in perspective. This is not coronavirus.
00:15:58.880This is a very different virus. We know this virus. Hanta viruses have been around for quite a while,
00:16:04.840but I want to be unequivocal here. This is not SARS-CoV-2. This is not the start of a COVID
00:16:10.200pandemic. This is an outbreak that we see on a ship. There's a confined area. We
00:16:14.580have five confirmed cases so far. We completely understand why these
00:16:19.740questions are coming and we are trying to provide all of the information that
00:16:23.280we can but this is not the same situation we were in six years ago. It
00:16:27.180doesn't spread the same way like coronaviruses do. It's very different. It's
00:16:32.260that close intimate contact that we've seen. And again I want to reiterate the
00:16:36.480The actions that are being taken on board are precautionary to prevent any onward spread.
00:16:42.240And so there's a lot that is being done right now to be able to try to minimize the risk even further.
00:16:49.800Secretary of State Marco Rubio meeting Pope Leo XIV yesterday at the Vatican.
00:16:54.620Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary Rubio meeting with the pontiff nearly one year ago after attending the Pope's inaugural mass,
00:17:02.420today marking one year since Pope Leo's election.
00:17:05.660Yesterday's closed-door meeting lasting about 45 minutes,
00:17:08.720it comes on the heels of the recent public clash between President Trump
00:17:12.400and the first U.S.-born head of the Catholic Church.
00:17:16.180Pope Leo on multiple occasions calling for a ceasefire on U.S.-Iranian hostilities.
00:17:21.720In a Monday appearance on the Hugh Hewitt show, President Trump responding.
00:17:25.840The Pope would rather talk about the fact that it's okay for Iran to have a nuclear weapon,
