00:00:41.620 back the curtain on a radical anti-ICE network operating inside Minneapolis. We got something
00:00:48.260 in our email that looks like a, it's written like a ransom note for Savannah Guthrie's mother. The
00:00:56.220 search for Savannah Guthrie's 84-year-old mother continues as reports of a possible ransom
00:01:01.560 note emerge. A federal judge blocking the Trump administration from ending temporary protected
00:01:07.140 status for an estimated 350,000 Haitians living in the U.S. And NASA delaying the launch of the

00:02:28.060 A new investigation from City Journal pulling back the curtain on a radical anti-ice network
00:02:33.300 operating inside Minneapolis. Investigative journalist Christina Buttons going inside Ice Watch Group,
00:02:40.080 quote, defend the 612, named for the Minneapolis area code, which she describes as, quote,
00:02:46.200 the beating heart of the city's resistance to federal immigration enforcement. Buttons gaining
00:02:51.720 access to Signal messaging chats, reviewing its training materials, and tracing its funding and
00:02:56.880 organizational support to outside sources. Buttons reporting, quote, members and related officials
00:03:02.920 have encouraged protesters to impede law enforcement, pushed civilians toward legally and physically
00:03:09.440 risky confrontations, and helped mobilize a counter-protest that turned violent. Two civilians,
00:03:15.900 Renee Good and Alex Preddy, fatally shot in January amid confrontations with federal agents as they
00:03:21.900 participated in, quote, ice watching, where trained agitators are encouraged to track ice agents,
00:03:28.940 film their activities, blow whistles, block traffic, and otherwise impede law enforcement. Buttons uncovering
00:03:35.620 a signal profile in Defend the 612, appearing to belong to Renee Good. According to City Journal,
00:03:42.280 Defend the 612 runs frequent Ice Watch trainings, teaching attendees how to, quote, identify, document,
00:03:48.920 and alert others to immigration enforcement. The journal identifying activist Jill Garvey as a
00:03:55.020 prominent organizing advisor to defend the 612. In 2024, Garvey founding States at the Core,
00:04:03.060 or STAC, which the journal reports, quote, is fiscally sponsored by the Hopewell Fund,
00:04:08.680 a non-profit progressive advocacy group described as part of a, quote, dark money network. Buttons
00:04:14.840 posting one of Garvey's Zoom training videos to Axe, where Garvey lays out the worldview driving these
00:04:21.680 efforts. Why is it happening? Is it because of immigration? Is it because there's actually a
00:04:27.880 problem with an invasion into the U.S. or because there's crime? No, that's not it, right? Those are
00:04:35.620 the justifications for this aggressive targeting. But immigrants and other marginalized groups of people
00:04:44.240 are just caught in the crosshairs, right, of this escalation of authoritarianism. So this has been
00:04:50.500 happening throughout history. It has happened throughout authoritarian movements, right? It's this
00:04:59.020 need to scapegoat vulnerable people so they can consolidate power and profit. According to City
00:05:07.780 Journal, Defend the 612's trainings go beyond identifying and documenting immigration enforcement,
00:05:14.500 even encouraging protesters to get themselves arrested to divert federal resources away
00:05:20.480 from their intended targets. Minneapolis City Council member Dan Englehart describing the
00:05:25.840 mission as to, quote, slow law enforcement actions down and cost them money. Instructor Lex Horan in a
00:05:33.080 training video posted to Axe by Buttons advising participants on risk-taking. Within that every day,
00:05:38.960 we also encourage folks to make their own personal risk assessments. When we say risk assessment here,
00:05:43.360 we mean checking in with yourself, checking in with your people. What am I willing,
00:05:47.840 what am I up for today? What am I willing to risk at any given moment to protect what I love?
00:05:53.200 Our love for our neighbors is what brings us here. And given that love, given that care,
00:05:58.740 what am I up for risking? And we encourage folks to stretch a little bit. That stretch doesn't mean
00:06:02.960 overriding our boundaries, but it means stretching a bit. Organizers capitalizing on the deaths of
00:06:08.240 Good and Pretty to boost recruitment numbers, reports City Journal. Quote,
00:06:12.720 the evening good died, Defend the 612 held an emergency vigil during which flyers were distributed
00:06:18.740 directing attendees to join the group. One organizer reporting on a Zoom call that they received about
00:06:24.420 a thousand new signups the following day. Buttons writes, quote, this cycle reveals the core strategy
00:06:31.320 of Defend the 612's leadership, using casualties as a catalyst for further escalation.
00:06:36.840 The search continues for Nancy Guthrie, 84-year-old mother of NBC host Savannah Guthrie. As authorities
00:06:44.820 confirm, they are aware of a possible ransom note being sent to various media outlets. Guthrie reported
00:06:51.560 missing around noon on Sunday. She was last seen on Saturday night. Pima County Sheriff Chris
00:06:57.820 Nanos at a press conference yesterday, declining to give a direct answer about whether authorities or
00:07:03.440 anyone in the family had received instructions from a possible suspect, instead offering that
00:07:09.700 investigators are, quote, following all leads. Shortly after yesterday's press conference,
00:07:15.240 TMZ reporting on a memo they received.
00:07:17.700 We got something in our email that looks like a, it's written like a ransom note for Savannah
00:07:26.720 Guthrie's mother. Specific requests for certain amounts of money, Bitcoin. Very specific. And also
00:07:32.220 they say at the bottom, there are certain things they're saying about what she was wearing and
00:07:37.160 damage to the house. That they're clearly saying to verify that we know what we're talking about.
00:07:43.780 So we are, we've contacted the Sheriff's Department and we want to get them this letter.
00:07:50.940 Um, and, um, we had a little trouble getting through to the right person, but the person we spoke with
00:07:56.740 is now forwarding this to somebody in the detective bureau. Again, we don't know if it's authentic or not.
00:08:05.500 But they're, when you read it, they're acting as if, yeah, only we would know these things and we're serious
00:08:14.260 and there's a dollar demand and an or else in there. Other newsrooms reporting receiving similar
00:08:20.780 letters. KGUN in Tucson reporting the note, quote, makes a specific demand for several million dollars
00:08:27.220 in Bitcoin by Thursday and threatens to kill her if payment is not received by Monday. It also makes
00:08:33.620 specific reference to two pieces of evidence at the crime scene, which we cannot authenticate as
00:08:39.240 legitimate. It is unclear if the deadline is referencing this coming Thursday. The Pima County
00:08:45.600 Sheriff's Office posting on X, quote, we are aware of reports circulating about possible ransom notes
00:08:51.120 regarding the investigation into Nancy Guthrie. Anything that comes in goes directly to our
00:08:56.700 detectives who are coordinating with the FBI. News Nation yesterday capturing footage of what appears
00:09:02.160 to be bloodstains on the tile floor outside of Guthrie's front door, as well as a missing ring camera.
00:09:08.200 Investigators are aware of the missing camera telling reporters yesterday they're looking into it.
00:09:14.280 Sheriff Nanos saying investigators have finished processing the house as a crime scene and are
00:09:18.880 awaiting reports from the DNA lab, hoping for hits on a possible suspect. At this time, investigators are
00:09:25.140 unaware if they are dealing with one or multiple suspects. The search for Guthrie grows more urgent
00:09:30.680 with passing time, as authorities say her daily medication was left behind, and without it, Guthrie's life is
00:09:37.380 at risk. President Trump, yesterday from the Oval, weighing in.
00:09:41.460 Have you been briefed on Savannah Guthrie's mom missing in Arizona?
00:09:45.840 I think it's terrible.
00:09:47.380 Would you commit to more federal agents, like helping out on the search or anything like that?
00:09:50.320 Sure, I would. I'd be a caller later on. I think it's a terrible thing. I always get along very good
00:09:54.780 with Savannah. Very unusual situation, but we're going to find out.
00:09:59.200 Coming up, a federal judge halting the Trump administration's attempt to return about 350,000
00:10:06.960 Haitians to their native country. And the Artemis 2 mission, set to send humans back into deep space,
00:10:13.800 postponed. The details next.
00:10:15.740 Everybody's talking about weight loss injections because the results can be dramatic. But what if

00:10:29.680 especially when you hear about some of those intense side effects? That's why doctors created
00:10:34.240 a weight loss supplement called Lean, and the results for some can be remarkable. Lean says the

00:11:14.460 A federal judge on Monday blocking the Trump administration from ending Temporary Protected
00:11:20.020 Status, or TPS, for an estimated 350,000 Haitians living in the U.S., at least for now. The ruling
00:11:27.860 coming from Biden-appointed District Judge Honoré Reyes in Washington, D.C. TPS grants certain foreign
00:11:34.300 nationals their legal right to live and work in the U.S., avoiding deportation if their home country
00:11:40.640 faces war, natural disaster, or other extreme circumstances. The Obama administration originally
00:11:47.240 granting Haitians TPS in 2010 after a catastrophic earthquake. The status renewed several times since,
00:11:54.480 most recently by the Biden administration in 2024 amid political turmoil in the country.
00:12:00.320 DHS Secretary Noem announcing in November the administration would terminate the status for
00:12:05.320 Haitians on February 3rd of this year. The move challenged by a group of five Haitian TPS holders,
00:12:12.000 seeking a stay on the termination as the case plays out. Judge Reyes writing the plaintiffs arguing,
00:12:17.820 quote, Secretary Noem preordained her termination decision and did so because of hostility to
00:12:23.720 non-white immigrants. Judge Reyes finding, quote, this seems substantially likely. The judge denying
00:12:31.320 the government's motion to dismiss the case entirely, writing, quote, the government's primary
00:12:35.800 response is that the TPS statutes gives the secretary unbounded discretion to make whatever
00:12:41.600 determination she wants, any way she wants. And yes, the judge continues, the statute does grant her
00:12:48.300 some discretion, but not unbounded discretion. The ruling is only a temporary stay, keeping TPS protections
00:12:55.620 in place as the lawsuit works through the court system. We spoke to executive president of America
00:13:00.900 First Policy Institute, Ashley Hayek, who says Judge Reyes is a partisan actor.
00:13:06.220 Judge Reyes has a very radical left background. When she was in private practice a while ago,
00:13:12.260 she worked on cross-border legal issues, taking on pro bono cases to represent asylum seekers and
00:13:17.720 refugee organizations. She was part of a legal team that challenged the Trump administration's
00:13:22.580 restrictions on refugees entering the U.S. through ports of entry. That was back in 2018. So this woman
00:13:28.240 has a very long history of being a total activist on immigration issues. It's completely ridiculous
00:13:36.040 because President Trump and Secretary Noem have had the same policy since day one, and it's to follow
00:13:40.800 the law. She has been the one who's constantly challenged immigration law in her own private
00:13:45.920 practice for decades. Biden appointee or Biden auto-pin appointee and real judicial activists.
00:13:52.560 Judge Reyes, in her opinion, citing the State Department's travel advisory warning to U.S. citizens
00:13:57.280 not to travel to Haiti as evidence contradicting DHS's conclusion that Haitians can safely return.
00:14:04.500 Hayek tells us that reasoning is irrelevant in this case.
00:14:07.960 It was concluded that Haiti had no longer met the temporary protective status statutory requirements.
00:14:14.060 A safe return is actually possible. And so TPS was ruled back lawfully, just as it was done with
00:14:21.360 Venezuela, and DHS followed the statute. It is different. Remember, a lot of these people were
00:14:26.960 granted TPS because of a hurricane in Haiti. So if they need to seek asylum, then there's a different
00:14:35.180 process for that. But a lot of these folks have been funneled in through the Biden administration
00:14:40.040 under the guise, and even long, long before that, due to other circumstances. So therefore,
00:14:47.240 if they want to come back into this country, there are other ways in which they can do that.
00:14:52.040 The administration declaring it intends to appeal the order. DHS Assistant Secretary Trisha
00:14:57.120 McLaughlin posting to X, quote, Supreme Court, here we come. This is a lawless activism that we will be
00:15:03.200 vindicated on. Hayek says the Trump administration has had a similar case in front of the high court with
00:15:08.600 success. We saw that when the Department of Homeland Security announced TPS terminations for
00:15:14.900 Venezuelans for 2021 and 2023 designations, that also had court challenges that temporarily halted
00:15:22.260 those terminations. When that went to the Supreme Court, they did allow termination of the 2023 and
00:15:28.960 2021 designations. And I think you'll see the exact same thing here. Hayek says this ruling is just the
00:15:34.520 latest in a long list of activist judges inserting themselves where they don't belong.
00:15:40.820 We've seen this at least six times in this administration. And it's just a pattern of
00:15:44.840 judicial intervention during the Trump administration. Despite there is clear statutory
00:15:50.080 prohibition, the federal district courts have been issuing injunctions blocking TPS terminations for
00:15:56.080 various countries. And so ultimately, the courts are going to be overruled. There could be something
00:16:02.860 done by Congress. Congress moves very slow. But that would probably be the other way to reform any
00:16:08.880 sort of TPS status. NASA delaying its next crewed Artemis mission to the moon, now targeting March
00:16:16.700 for the earliest possible launch. The Artemis 2 mission initially anticipating liftoff as early
00:16:22.300 as February 8th. But NASA says issues discovered in a pre-launch test on Monday forced the delay.
00:16:28.420 The mission is set to take off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Artemis 2 will send four
00:16:34.480 astronauts into deep space for the first time since the Apollo program ended more than 50 years ago,
00:16:41.180 where the crew will fly around the moon before returning to Earth. Astronaut Reed Wiseman,
00:16:46.340 the commander of Artemis 2, describing the mission on CBS.
00:16:49.700 We're going pretty far past the moon, actually. We're going to be quite a bit further. Apollo was in low
00:16:53.640 lunar orbit. They were about 60 miles off the surface of the moon. We're going to be 3 to 6,000
00:16:58.760 miles off the surface of the moon. So the moon's about that big out the window. You can see the
00:17:02.540 whole thing, North Pole to South Pole on the far side. And I will tell you, when Earth set in the
00:17:08.020 simulator that we did last week, when Earth set, it was magnificent. But when Earth rose, it stopped us
00:17:14.240 all in our tracks. The delay coming after multiple issues, including hydrogen leaks, were detected in a
00:17:20.520 pre-launch dress rehearsal. The Artemis 1 facing similar delays in spring of 2022 before eventually
00:17:27.160 going on to complete a successful mission. Artemis 2 is a key step toward returning humans to the
00:17:32.880 surface of the moon and eventually sending astronauts to Mars and beyond. As launch day nears,
00:17:38.540 crew member Victor Glover tells CBS, faith is a key part of success.
00:17:43.420 Before I jump into T-38, I say a prayer. I say a prayer and I say I love you to my wife and
00:17:48.640 daughters. Every time. And so I would just love to invite people into, you know, we know that what
00:17:53.980 we do comes with risks. And, you know, if folks are willing, I would love to encourage folks to
00:17:58.220 the thoughts and prayers. You know, that's a great time, like right then, until we get back in contact
00:18:04.340 with Earth. That'll do it for your AM update. I'm Emily Jashinsky, host of After Party. Catch the
