00:02:40.360 The governor of Illinois is alleging an unconstitutional invasion by the federal government.

00:02:46.080 President Trump is considering invoking the Insurrection Act to justify his deployment of the National Guard to Chicago.

00:02:53.180 Happy Tuesday.

00:02:54.580 Biden appointed federal district judge April Perry on Monday, siding with the Trump administration for now,

00:03:00.600 and allowing President Trump to deploy 400 members of the Texas National Guard and 300 members of the Illinois National Guard to Chicago.

00:03:10.020 Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson trying to stop it with a lawsuit filed yesterday morning,

00:03:17.020 in which they moved for a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction.

00:03:21.480 This, after the Department of War's Sunday announcement, calling up the Guard for at least 60 days,

00:03:27.740 in order to protect federal agents and property amid an immigration crackdown in the Windy City.

00:03:33.440 Judge Perry declining to immediately stop the deployment and setting briefing on the motion for an injunction,

00:03:40.180 giving the Department of Justice until tomorrow night to respond, with oral arguments set for Thursday.

00:03:45.420 But each side ramping up the legal rhetoric since invasion claims Pritzker, insurrection claims Mr. Trump.

00:03:53.420 The Pritzker lawsuit arguing the Trump administration's justification for the deployment is, quote,

00:03:58.400 based on a flimsy pretext.

00:04:00.520 Far from promoting public safety in the Chicago region,

00:04:03.500 defendants' provocative and arbitrary actions have threatened to undermine public safety by inciting a public outcry.

00:04:09.740 In recent days, agitators clashing with ICE agents in the Chicago area.

00:04:14.940 At one point, protesters boxing in agents with some 10 of their vehicles.

00:04:20.080 One woman, armed with a semi-automatic pistol,

00:04:23.060 who had earlier doxed ICE agents and called for her gang to, quote,

00:04:27.640 F those MFers up, 1.00

00:04:29.820 accused of trapping the officers in their cars

00:04:32.660 and when they exited their vehicles trying to run them over.

00:04:36.120 Officers opening fire on the woman, who was hit, but still able to drive herself to the hospital.

00:04:42.800 Fox News reporting more than a dozen arrested in the protests since Friday.

00:04:47.120 Governor Pritzker, Attorney General Kwame Raul,

00:04:50.320 and Mayor Johnson on Monday evening railing against the Trump administration.

00:04:54.540 Their plan all along has been to cause chaos,

00:04:57.740 and then they can use that chaos to consolidate Donald Trump's power.

00:05:01.940 They think they can fool us all into thinking that the way to get out of this crisis that they created

00:05:07.440 is to give them free reign.

00:05:10.340 The American people, regardless of where they reside,

00:05:13.560 should not live under the threat of occupation by the United States military,

00:05:19.380 particularly for the reason that their city or state leadership

00:05:23.840 has fallen out of the president's political favor.

00:05:27.880 The only radical is a president trying to deploy National Guard from across the country into our city.

00:05:33.460 We do not need or want the National Guard to police our streets.

00:05:37.060 In a separate action, Mayor Johnson on Monday morning

00:05:40.220 signing an executive order installing ice-free zones within the city.

00:05:45.540 The order establishes ice-free zones.

00:05:48.560 That means that city property and unwilling private businesses

00:05:53.320 will no longer serve as staging grounds for these raids.

00:05:57.880 Private establishments can partner with us to make it clear that private property is private property,

00:06:04.120 and ice cannot enter establishments without a valid warrant.

00:06:07.920 Private entities may voluntarily choose to display signage to designate their property

00:06:12.940 as part of a citywide network of community spaces that stand together

00:06:17.580 in affirming the safety, dignity, and belonging of all of our residents.

00:06:22.620 By extending this protection beyond city-owned land,

00:06:25.880 the order builds a broad civic shield that limits the reach of harmful enforcement practices.

00:06:32.820 The White House responding in a statement,

00:06:35.200 quote,

00:06:35.340 The White House then listing eight illegal aliens arrested in recent days

00:06:55.120 and their alleged offenses,

00:06:57.220 including aggravated criminal sexual assault,

00:07:00.080 concealing homicidal death,

00:07:02.180 armed carjacking,

00:07:03.440 and failure to register as a sex offender.

00:07:07.800 Today, marking two years since Hamas terrorists launched a devastating attack on Israel, 0.83

00:07:14.040 killing 1,200 and taking around 250 hostage,

00:07:17.860 including American citizens.

00:07:19.440 The terrorists storming a music festival,

00:07:22.800 gunning down young revelers in cold blood.

00:07:25.980 To this day, 48 hostages remain in captivity.

00:07:29.340 Only 20 are believed to be alive, according to the BBC.

00:07:33.000 A few weeks later, Israel began its full-scale invasion of Gaza,

00:07:37.280 destroying tunnels and buildings in pursuit of ending Hamas's control of the region once and for all.

00:07:43.260 It's nearly impossible to get a true death toll.

00:07:45.820 The Palestinian Ministry of Health, a Hamas-run organization,

00:07:50.320 claims more than 60,000 have been killed in the war.

00:07:54.040 Even if that number were true, however,

00:07:56.440 we know it makes no distinction between civilians and militants.

00:08:00.380 What we do know is tens of thousands have been killed.

00:08:04.220 On Monday, Israeli and Hamas officials meeting at an Egyptian resort

00:08:08.240 to hammer out the final details of a peace deal proposed by the Trump administration.

00:08:12.640 The 20-point plan unveiled at the White House last week.

00:08:16.260 More on that in a moment.

00:08:17.700 News of the deal comes as American support for Israel's war is on a downward trend.

00:08:22.340 A new Washington Post poll showing 61% of American Jews

00:08:26.040 believe Israel is committing war crimes in Gaza.

00:08:29.320 Nearly 40% say Israel is committing a genocide.

00:08:32.980 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also losing popularity among American Jews,

00:08:37.860 68% rating his performance as either poor or only fair.

00:08:42.840 However, 94% of American Jews simultaneously say Hamas has committed war crimes against Israel,

00:08:48.940 with 68% blaming Hamas for civilian deaths in Gaza.

00:08:52.920 A new Pew Research poll showing 59% of U.S. adults

00:08:56.740 hold an unfavorable opinion of the Israeli government.

00:09:00.360 That's up from 51% in early 2024.

00:09:03.660 33% say the U.S. is providing too much military assistance to Israel,

00:09:08.140 as opposed to 8% who say it's not enough.

00:09:10.480 A New York Times poll last week showing American support for Israel has, quote,

00:09:15.040 undergone a seismic reversal,

00:09:17.360 with large shares of voters expressing starkly negative views about Israel's management of the war.

00:09:23.600 Six out of ten saying Israel should end its military campaign,

00:09:27.300 even if the hostages are not released.

00:09:29.480 Nearly seven in ten younger voters oppose additional aid to Israel.

00:09:34.900 Republicans are still Israel's strongest supporters,

00:09:37.880 though their support has dropped 12 points since the war began.

00:09:41.860 On Friday, Hamas partially accepting Mr. Trump's proposal,

00:09:46.180 agreeing to release the hostages while calling for further negotiations on other elements of the deal.

00:09:52.100 Axios reporting on a Friday call between President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu.

00:09:56.260 Mr. Netanyahu reportedly characterized the response as a rejection of the plan.

00:10:02.320 President Trump reportedly replying, quote,

00:10:04.580 I don't know why you're always so effing negative.

00:10:07.200 This is a win. Take it.

00:10:09.400 By Saturday, the prime minister publicly taking credit for the deal.

00:10:13.420 Secretary of State Marco Rubio Sunday on Meet the Press elaborating on details of the ongoing negotiations in Egypt.

00:10:20.180 Now, we need to work through the logistics of how that's going to happen.

00:10:23.660 I mean, and again, that sounds simplistic, but it's not just about you got to make sure that there's no fighting going on.

00:10:28.480 You have to make sure the Red Cross can get there, what time they're going to be there, where they're going to be.

00:10:32.080 All of that has to be worked through.

00:10:33.460 And that's not easy in the middle of an active war zone.

00:10:36.300 That has to be de-escalated.

00:10:37.900 And that's exactly what they're meeting about right now.

00:10:39.900 I mean, that's what the talks are about.

00:10:41.760 That's what the high level talks are going to be in Cairo tomorrow.

00:10:44.180 Mr. Secretary, they could be released this week.

00:10:46.240 Our expectation, yeah, we want it to be as soon as possible.

00:10:50.160 There's no doubt about it.

00:10:50.980 We want it as soon as possible.

00:10:52.440 It needs to happen as quickly as possible.

00:10:54.360 And we will know very quickly whether Hamas is serious or not by how these technical talks go in terms of the logistics.

00:10:59.940 But absolutely, we want these hostages, all of them, living and deceased, released as soon as possible.

00:11:05.720 CNN reporting the talks are expected to last a few days, with mediators from the U.S., Qatar, Egypt and Turkey also participating.

00:11:13.100 On Sunday, President Trump telling reporters he believes the war could be ended within a few days, texting with CNN's Jake Tapper, saying if Hamas does not refuse to cede power in Gaza, it faces, quote, complete obliteration.

00:11:29.020 Coming up, big changes coming to CBS News as parent company Paramount announces a new editor-in-chief for its news division.

00:11:36.840 And Ghislaine Maxwell reaches the end of the road in her legal challenge to overturn her criminal conviction.

00:11:43.100 Did you know chips and fries used to be cooked in tallow up until the 1990s when big corporations switched to cheap, processed seed oils?

00:11:56.480 Today, seed oils make up 20% of the average American's daily calories.

00:12:00.560 And recent studies linked seed oils to metabolic health issues and inflammation.

00:12:06.180 Well, Masa decided to do something about it.

00:12:08.800 They created a tasty tortilla chip with just three ingredients, organic corn, sea salt, and 100% grass-fed beef tallow.

00:12:18.100 These chips avoid all the bad stuff and taste incredible, too.

00:12:22.680 Masa is crunchier, tastier, and sturdier than other chips.

00:12:26.540 The beef tallow makes the chips much more satiating, so you will not find yourself binging and then hungry immediately afterwards.

00:12:34.000 Ready to give Masa a try?

00:12:36.520 Go to masachips.com slash mk.

00:12:39.120 Use the code mk for 25% off your first order.

00:12:42.220 That's masachips.com slash mk and code mk for 25% off.

00:12:46.700 That's a lot.

00:12:47.600 Your first order.

00:12:48.840 Don't feel like ordering online?

00:12:50.500 That's fine.

00:12:51.500 Masa is now available nationwide at your local Sprouts supermarket.

00:12:56.700 Stop by and pick up a bag before they're all gone.

00:12:59.300 CBS News parent company Paramount on Monday announcing a $150 million deal to acquire independent news and opinion site The Free Press, founded by Barry Weiss, who is also stepping into the role of editor-in-chief of CBS News.

00:13:18.120 Weiss left her post as a columnist and editor at The New York Times in 2020, publishing a letter lambasting her colleagues and the institution itself.

00:13:26.700 Quote, a new consensus has emerged in the press, but perhaps especially at this paper, that truth is not a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job it is to inform everyone else.

00:13:42.060 Weiss then founding The Free Press, growing it into a newsletter it says has more than 1.5 million subscribers, with approximately 170,000 paying subscribers.

00:13:52.100 On Monday, Weiss addressing the deal on her Honestly podcast, explaining why she is returning to legacy media after publicly swearing it off.

00:14:00.960 I was raised to be a believer in the institutions that built America and that made sense of it.

00:14:07.400 Our universities, book publishers, movie studios, and yes, newspaper companies that forge public opinion for the entirety of my grandparents' and parents' lives.

00:14:16.920 But what I found five years ago is that the most important public conversations were happening outside of those places.

00:14:24.700 So much has changed since then.

00:14:26.640 As the gatekeepers of the mainstream have failed one after another, an explosion took place across the media landscape.

00:14:34.180 Incredible new voices came to the fore.

00:14:36.720 Personalities and influencers have overtaken 100-year-old journalism brands in only a few years.

00:14:42.240 This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that allows us to do just that.

00:14:46.700 It gives the free press a chance to help reshape a storied media organization, to help guide CBS News into a future that honors those great American values that underpin the free press and the best of American journalism.

00:15:00.560 And in doing so, to bring our mission to millions of people.

00:15:05.160 Chairman and CEO of Paramount, David Ellison, releasing a statement, quote,

00:15:08.840 This move is part of Paramount's bigger vision to modernize content and the way it connects, directly and passionately, to audiences around the world.

00:15:17.900 CBS News struggling in recent years with declining ratings and internal battles fueled by ideological infighting.

00:15:24.840 CBS Morning's consistently trailing behind its competitors on ABC and NBC as the show's programming, reportedly heavily influenced by self-declared astronaut Gayle King, leans into heavily progressive themes.

00:15:38.840 Earlier this year, Paramount agreeing to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit, with President Trump over a 60 Minutes interview, Mr. Trump says was deceptively edited to favor then-Vice President Harris in the lead-up to the 2024 election.

00:15:53.060 But let's face it, that was the least of 60 Minutes and CBS News' bias problems.

00:15:58.780 Paramount also agreeing to install an ombudsman and committing to ensuring, quote,

00:16:04.020 Viewpoint diversity, nondiscrimination, and enhanced localism in its coverage, as part of its bid to gain approval for a multibillion-dollar merger with Skydance earlier this year.

00:16:14.760 What they're going to do about being an absolute bore, we don't yet know.

00:16:18.400 Media reporter for The Guardian, Jeremy Barr, posting to X about internal reactions to Weiss's new position, quote,

00:16:25.580 Several CBS News employees I have spoken with said they are in wait-and-see mode.

00:16:30.920 One was more blunt.

00:16:32.300 A throwing-up emoji is not enough of a reflection of the feelings in here.

00:16:37.640 Good luck to our pal Barry as she enters the snake pit that is corporate legacy media.

00:16:43.320 The Supreme Court on Monday bringing final closure to Ghislaine Maxwell's attempt to get her criminal conviction tossed, declining to hear her appeal.

00:16:53.920 Jeffrey Epstein's former girlfriend and confidant convicted in the Southern District of New York in 2021

00:16:58.600 sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 for her role in sexually abusing minors with the disgraced financier.

00:17:06.940 The court's decision likely marking the end of the legal road for Maxwell, meaning clemency is the only path to early release.

00:17:14.620 Maxwell appealing several aspects of her conviction, her argument resting largely on a highly unusual and equally controversial 2008 plea deal

00:17:23.120 between Jeffrey Epstein and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida.

00:17:27.980 The terms of that agreement allowing Epstein to plead guilty to two state charges,

00:17:33.360 one count of soliciting prostitution and one count of soliciting prostitution from a minor,

00:17:38.640 which is not a thing.

00:17:40.020 That's called statutory rape. 1.00

00:17:42.220 Anyway, they allowed that in exchange for avoiding federal charges against him.

00:17:46.840 The deal also barring future prosecution of Epstein and, quote, potential co-conspirators.

00:17:53.200 Maxwell's attorneys arguing that meant her.

00:17:55.620 However, contending Epstein's Florida plea deal should have barred Maxwell's later prosecution in New York.

00:18:01.280 The Second Circuit Court of Appeals not buying it, writing, quote,

00:18:04.480 It is well established in our circuit that a plea agreement binds only the office of the U.S. attorney for the district

00:18:11.020 in which the plea is entered unless it affirmatively appears that the agreement contemplates a broader restriction.

00:18:18.300 In July, Maxwell meeting with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche over two days,

00:18:23.060 speaking about what she observed during her time with Epstein,

00:18:27.040 who officials say died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial.

00:18:32.020 Following that meeting, Maxwell was moved to a lower security prison in Texas,

00:18:36.860 an apparent concession for her cooperation with no official reason given for the move.

00:18:42.200 The meeting arranged amid public outcry over the handling of the Epstein case.

00:18:46.240 Despite Maxwell's cooperation with Blanche and her legal team's public musings about hopes for a pardon,

00:18:53.080 the Trump DOJ continuously fighting against Maxwell's attempts to overturn her conviction.

00:18:58.540 Maxwell's attorney, David Oscar Marcus, saying, quote,

00:19:01.660 This fight is not over.

00:19:03.180 Serious legal and factual issues remain,

00:19:05.780 and we will continue to pursue every avenue available to ensure that justice is done.
