00:00:43.100 off with emotional testimony describing the moments directly after the fatal stabbing.
00:00:48.920 There is an arrogance in sharing classified information with one's family members. They
00:00:54.160 don't have clearances. Former Trump national security advisor turned major critic of the
00:00:59.520 president John Bolton expected to plead guilty to mishandling classified information. The
00:01:05.500 Department of Homeland Security defending its detention center standards amid increased
00:01:10.220 scrutiny this week. The flies land in the womb. They lay their eggs. The larva then is what
00:01:15.180 actually eats the eats the flesh. And a flesh eating maggot. Sorry. Once wiped out in the U.S.,
00:01:24.140 confirmed in a Texas calf. All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM update.

00:02:59.160 Opening statements and day one of witness testimony in the murder trial of Texas teenager
00:03:04.300 Carmelo Anthony taking place yesterday in Collin County, Texas. Jurors hearing dramatic and
00:03:10.780 emotional testimony about the moments surrounding the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf
00:03:16.960 at a high school track meet last year. Anthony, who was also 17 at the time of the incident,
00:03:23.600 admitting to stabbing Metcalf during a confrontation in April of 2025, but his
00:03:29.120 attorneys maintaining he acted in self-defense. Prosecutors rejecting that argument, describing
00:03:34.820 the incident as, quote, an unjustified, unprovoked murder. In opening statements, prosecutors telling
00:03:41.300 jurors, Anthony entered a Memorial High School team tent after it started to rain and refused
00:03:47.260 repeated requests to leave. According to the state, Metcalf approaching Anthony, telling him
00:03:53.360 to leave the tent before Anthony allegedly responded, touch me and see what happens.
00:03:58.540 Defense attorneys painting a different picture, describing Anthony as an honor student,
00:04:03.140 athlete, and oldest sibling who found himself caught in a rapidly escalating confrontation.
00:04:09.260 The defense arguing jurors will hear evidence supporting Anthony's claim that he feared for
00:04:14.200 his safety. Defense attorney Mike Howard telling jurors in his opening statement, quote,
00:04:19.260 in that split second, Mello had a decision to make, how and when to act. Self-defense is useless if
00:04:26.640 you wait too late to defend yourself. He reacts in a split second of fear, chaos. After Carmelo
00:04:33.000 defended himself with that knife, he ran. He didn't stab again. He dropped the knife. He didn't
00:04:38.400 stab anyone else. Texas law allows someone to use deadly force against another if they reasonably
00:04:44.720 believe they face an imminent deadly threat. The law also will not allow a finding of self-defense
00:04:51.120 if the defendant provoked the initial encounter. Here's veteran criminal defense attorney Randy
00:04:57.500 Zellen with more to the New York Post. From what we know, this was a verbal altercation
00:05:04.200 where it almost seems like the defendant was provoking the incident himself by allegedly
00:05:12.420 saying, touch me and see what happens as he's reaching into a bag. And then apparently he was
00:05:18.700 touched. Touching someone is not deadly force. You cannot meet deadly force. You cannot stamp
00:05:26.600 someone in the chest and kill them because they touch you. They've got to be coming at you with
00:05:31.780 a knife. They've got to be coming at you with a gun. They've got to be coming at you with a metal
00:05:36.540 pipe to split your head open. You can't be justified in killing someone with a knife and
00:05:43.540 stabbing them in the chest if they were not about to use, immediately use, deadly force on you.
00:05:51.300 There's also the claim circulating online that Anthony was, quote, jumped by as many as
00:05:56.600 Four guys, including Austin.
00:05:59.080 Attorney Todd Shapiro telling Fox News' Will Cain
00:06:01.860 those allegations are not supported by the video.
00:06:05.040 It was one-on-one.
00:06:06.340 You can absolutely make out that there's two people
00:06:08.580 that get into a scuffle.
00:06:10.300 It's very, very short in duration.
00:06:12.580 The contact between the two of them
00:06:13.960 probably lasted less than five seconds.
00:06:16.720 And as soon as the push went the other direction,
00:06:19.860 which presumably is when he was stabbed,
00:06:21.440 you can see everybody completely scattered. Some of the most emotional testimony coming
00:06:29.460 from those giving emergency aid to Metcalf. Athletic trainer Tiffany Whitaker testifying
00:06:34.760 that she rushed to help him after hearing screams from the stands. She performed CPR alongside
00:06:40.560 another trainer until paramedics arrived. Whitaker saying after seeing the severity of his wound,
00:06:46.620 she realized resuscitation efforts were what she described as, quote, false hope.
00:06:52.240 Jurors also hearing from Heritage High School football coach Vincent Hooper,
00:06:56.380 the coach testifying about his conversation with Anthony moments after the incident.
00:07:01.160 According to Hooper, Anthony telling him, quote, he put his hands on me. I stabbed him.
00:07:06.400 Hooper testifying, he then warned Anthony that if the victim died, he had, quote,
00:07:10.880 changed the rest of his life. Anthony allegedly responding, quote, he's not going to die.
00:07:16.620 The highly publicized case attracting national attention and drawing large crowds to the
00:07:21.560 Collin County Courthouse. The trial is expected to last roughly two weeks. Anthony has pleaded
00:07:27.040 not guilty. If convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from five years to life in prison.
00:07:34.220 Former Trump National Security Advisor turned top Trump critic John Bolton expected to plead
00:07:40.000 guilty to mishandling classified information while working in the first Trump administration.
00:07:45.760 Sources telling CNN Bolton intends to plead guilty to one felony count of illegal retention
00:07:51.060 of sensitive national security documents and has also agreed to pay a fine of more than $2 million.
00:07:57.880 News of the plea deal coming eight months after Bolton, who served as Trump's national security
00:08:02.860 advisor from 2018 to 2019, was indicted on 18 counts of illegally hoarding and sending
00:08:09.980 sensitive information. A Maryland grand jury indicting Bolton on eight counts of transmission
00:08:15.140 of national defense information and 10 counts of unlawful retention of such information after the
00:08:21.760 FBI searched Bolton's Maryland home and Washington, D.C. office in August of 2025, reportedly seizing
00:08:28.560 multiple classified documents. Bolton pleading not guilty to all charges in October. Upon leaving
00:08:35.060 the Trump administration in 2019, Bolton writing a book highly critical of his former boss titled
00:08:40.780 The Room Where It Happened. The Trump administration unsuccessfully suing at the time to stop
00:08:46.020 publication of the book, alleging it contained classified information. Bolton maintaining the
00:08:51.300 book went through a pre-publication review and was cleared for publishing. According to the
00:08:56.320 indictment, Bolton sharing, quote, more than a thousand pages of information about his day-to-day
00:09:01.500 activities as national security advisor with two unidentified family members believed to be his
00:09:07.220 wife and daughter. CNN reporting Bolton's guilty plea will not include charges related to the
00:09:12.900 allegation that he took home or shared classified documents, only that he wrote down sensitive
00:09:19.580 national security information as part of his personal papers. The indictment in this case
00:09:24.980 did allege that Bolton's misuse of classified information was done while preparing for his
00:09:30.380 memoir, but sources tell CBS News that prosecutors in this plea deal do not allege any wrongdoing
00:09:36.680 by Bolton in connection with the publication of his book. Bolton expected to submit the
00:09:41.900 plea agreement at a hearing at the U.S. District Court in Maryland on June 26th, the docket in his
00:09:47.240 case describing the proceeding as a, quote, re-arraignment. The plea deal will require
00:09:51.940 approval from Obama-appointed U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang. The sentencing range for the
00:09:57.640 single count of retaining classified national security information is between zero and 60
00:10:03.200 months. If Bolton had gone to trial and lost, he could have faced decades in prison. Neither the
00:10:08.920 Justice Department nor Bolton has yet commented on the reported plea deal. Coming up, newly
00:10:15.640 appointed Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullen addressing conditions at ICE detention
00:10:21.020 centers as the issue takes center stage this week. And a flesh-eating maggot—I know,
00:10:28.740 it's early, you still have your coffee—thought to be eradicated decades ago in America,
00:10:33.920 may be making a comeback after a confirmed case in Texas.

00:11:59.420 centers in the nation. It comes the same week as protests and lawsuits surround a similar
00:12:05.140 detention center in New Jersey, following claims of a hunger strike among detainees.
00:12:10.660 The inspector general's office saying staff at the Wynn Correctional Center in central Louisiana
00:12:15.400 used, quote, prohibited techniques and violated the use of force standard. In one incident,
00:12:21.220 an officer, quote, applied a chokehold on one detainee involved in a physical altercation
00:12:26.320 with another detainee. Investigators also citing environmental and sanitation concerns
00:12:31.980 throughout the facility, including leaky vents and ceilings, with staff reportedly using napkins
00:12:37.600 and styrofoam containers to collect water from the leaks. ICE saying it is addressing the issues
00:12:43.200 through corrective actions and additional staff training. Department of Homeland Security
00:12:47.880 spokesperson Lauren Biss releasing a statement describing the matters as, quote, minor infractions,
00:12:53.840 writing, quote, ICE is working to address all of these issues, including by adding additional
00:12:59.200 training to facility staff. ICE has higher detention standards than most U.S. prisons
00:13:03.840 that hold actual U.S. citizens. Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullen earlier this week
00:13:09.620 defending his agency's detention standards on Capitol Hill. Here, Mullen being questioned
00:13:14.720 about another detention center in the news this week, Newark's Delaney Hall.
00:13:19.080 A lot of claims were made, and they just absolutely weren't true.
00:13:23.700 The first one came out and said it was overcrowded.
00:13:26.600 We have today, I believe, under 700 detainees there.
00:13:30.620 It's licensed for just over 1,000 beds.
00:13:33.060 We have twice the square footage at Delaney Hall than the state penitentiary does in New Jersey.
00:13:38.540 They said that the medical condition was horrible.
00:13:42.040 We have twice as much medical staff per person than the state penitentiary does in New Jersey.
00:13:48.700 As AM Update reported on Wednesday, the Delaney Hall Detainment Center at the
00:13:52.900 center of a legal battle in the state of New Jersey. The center also the site of massive
00:13:57.240 protests over the past several weeks, stemming from claims of a supposed hunger strike among
00:14:02.680 detainees. However, a new report from the Daily Wire suggesting detainees might be
00:14:07.400 skipping cafeteria meals but are far from starving. According to data obtained by the outlet,
00:14:13.760 commissary purchases at the Newark-based detention center jumping more than 160 percent over a one-week
00:14:20.740 period, even as the facility's detainee population declined. In other words, the detainees are buying
00:14:27.260 snacks, lots of them. Former ICE officials noting that detainees dining on snacks would not meet the
00:14:34.540 traditional definition of a hunger strike. A flesh-eating maggot known to burrow inside
00:14:42.800 open wounds, I mean, this is unbelievable, of livestock, wildlife, and in rare cases,
00:14:49.100 humans, confirmed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to be found in Texas. Federal
00:14:54.700 officials corroborating the presence of the New World screw worm after a three-week-old calf in
00:15:00.740 La Pryor, Texas, testing positive for symptoms consistent with the parasite. It's the first
00:15:06.340 confirmed case in Texas since 1966. The screw worm is actually not a worm at all. It's the
00:15:13.300 larval stage of a fly that lays eggs in its host. So gross. Once hatched, the larva feeding from
00:15:21.580 the inside out and leaving painful, often foul-smelling wounds. This is so nasty, but we
00:15:28.080 gotta get through it. The parasite is not a risk to food safety, few, according to NBC News,
00:15:34.440 but a wider outbreak could cost the livestock industry millions or even billions in livestock
00:15:40.280 deaths, labor costs, and medication expenses. The newly discovered case, not totally unexpected.
00:15:47.460 With nearly 2,000 active animal infections being tracked throughout Mexico, including two recently
00:15:53.340 in a goat and a dog near the Texas border, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins
00:15:58.940 yesterday telling the House Committee on Agriculture she knew this day would come.
00:16:03.600 All models showed that this pest would be here by last summer. With the extremely aggressive
00:16:10.620 action, with the support of this committee and an entire across-government effort,
00:16:15.420 we began to push back very significantly starting February of last year. The aggressive
00:16:22.040 action we took across the Trump administration and with our state and local partners
00:16:26.520 bought us almost a year of critical time to prepare for what happened yesterday.
00:16:32.780 We have now activated our new World Screwworm Response Playbook,
00:16:36.320 which includes detailed protocols and procedures for just this scenario.
00:16:41.720 Rollins also walking the committee through how this maggot got here, casting blame on the Biden
00:16:48.400 administration. Under the last administration and after having the Darien Gap, which is the
00:16:54.460 biological barrier between South America and Central America, which held the screwworm at bay
00:17:00.700 since the 1960s, that barrier and gap crumbled under the last administration. With open borders
00:17:09.720 and the proliferation of the Mexican cartels and their illicit cattle trafficking, the New World
00:17:15.540 screw room began to make its way north, hitting Mexico in 2023 and 2024. The secretary is saying
00:17:23.220 for the immediate threat in Texas, officials establishing a 12-mile zone around where the
00:17:28.620 potential case was found while implementing quarantines, movement controls, and surveillance
00:17:34.280 in the region. Agriculture officials also expediting a targeted release of sterile flies
00:17:40.740 in the affected area to prevent the pests from reproducing.
00:17:44.580 The same method used successfully decades ago to eradicate the fly, reports the AP.
00:17:50.920 While Rollins remains confident this probable case in Texas will be contained,
00:17:55.420 state officials down there are not so sure.
00:17:58.620 Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller advocating to local station KXAN
00:18:03.580 the use of multiple containment methods, not just the sterile insect technique.
00:18:08.600 It's called the SWAS system. It's a screwworm adult suppression system, and it consists of fly bait.
00:18:14.720 You put out the fly bait. It eliminates 85 to 95 percent of the flies.
00:18:19.860 Then you can control the remainder with the sterile flies.
00:18:23.540 But for some reason, USDA refuses to do this.
00:18:27.100 I put that information in the hands of the Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins.
00:18:32.080 I put it in the hands of the head of the Texas Animal Health Commission three times, but they refused to use it.
00:18:38.600 Though Secretary Rollins has not publicly responded to Miller's suggestion on the SWAS system,
00:18:44.180 there may be some concerns about deploying large-scale insecticide-laced bait programs
00:18:49.100 in response to a breakout of one. Miller wants more aggressive trapping and surveillance to
00:18:55.900 ensure every case is detected and treated early. The USDA says response teams are on the ground
00:19:02.160 while the CDC urges people to keep wounds clean and covered and report suspicious infections in
00:19:07.920 animals immediately. Okay, back to your breakfast. Hopefully, it's like a muffin.
