00:00:12.000 a half years of the Trump administration. Vice President J.D. Vance says the indictment of

00:00:16.120 former FBI Director James Comey is just the beginning as new reports surface on the specifics

00:00:22.500 of the case. A gunman opening fire on a Mormon church in Michigan before setting it ablaze,

00:00:28.720 killing at least four. President Trump deploys the National Guard to Portland, Oregon.

00:00:34.740 I cannot continue my re-election campaign. And Eric Adams drops his re-election bid for

00:00:41.220 New York City mayor. All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM Update.

00:01:44.400 We're starting to learn more about the details of the case against former FBI director James Comey.

00:01:53.600 Multiple outlets reporting count one of the indictment against Comey making false statements

00:01:58.560 to Congress involves his alleged decision to authorize his friend Daniel Richman to leak

00:02:05.180 information to reporters about an FBI investigation related to Hillary Clinton. According to the

00:02:11.080 indictment, Comey, quote, did willfully and knowingly make a false statement when he told the Senate

00:02:16.320 Judiciary Committee in September 2020 that he never authorized anyone at the FBI to be an anonymous

00:02:23.600 source in news reports regarding an investigation concerning person one. Person one is not defined,

00:02:30.580 but reports indicate it's Hillary Clinton. According to the indictment, Comey knew he had authorized

00:02:36.420 person three, also not defined, but believed to be Richmond to serve as an anonymous source to

00:02:43.700 reporters regarding the investigation into person one. Again, Mrs. Clinton, the indictment leaves

00:02:49.860 unspecified exactly which news reports the charges are in reference to CNN reporting. They center around

00:02:57.040 alleged leaks related to articles involving the FBI's investigation into Mrs. Clinton's private email

00:03:04.140 server back in 2016. Richmond, a Columbia Law School professor and former personal lawyer to Comey,

00:03:11.660 was brought on as a special governmental employee for the FBI by Comey from 2015 through February 2017.

00:03:20.160 In 2017, Comey testifying that he also gave Richmond his personal memos about President Trump,

00:03:27.100 instructing Richmond to leak them to the media. Comey was hoping it would lead to a special counsel

00:03:32.480 appointment after President Trump fired Comey in May of 2017, and his gamble was successful. Comey's leak

00:03:40.220 through Richmond clearly contributed to the decision by Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein at the time to appoint

00:03:46.600 Robert Mueller as special counsel. However, that episode does not appear connected to this indictment,

00:03:53.460 which appears more about the leaks related to Hillary. ABC News reporting that Richmond met with

00:03:59.200 federal investigators on September 16th of this year. Richmond is not accused of any illegal activity

00:04:05.580 connected to the Comey indictment. Comey is the first former FBI director ever to be indicted,

00:04:10.760 the news sending shockwaves through the political stratosphere, galvanizing both sides of the aisle.

00:04:16.380 Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reacting to the indictment Sunday on Meet the Press.

00:04:20.780 I have no faith in Donald Trump's judicial system. He has turned this judicial system to be his own

00:04:28.700 political, uh, political fighter, do what he wants politically so that he tells them to go after

00:04:37.140 people he doesn't like. He tells them to exonerate people that he likes. So Trump's done so many bad

00:04:42.440 things to undermine our democracy, to undermine our norms. This is one of the very worst.

00:04:46.740 Vice President J.D. Vance on Fox News saying this is just the beginning of holding officials

00:04:52.340 responsible for their actions. Well, there's certainly going to be more indictments coming

00:04:56.480 over the next three and a half years of the Trump administration, but we're always going to let the

00:04:59.880 law drive this stuff and the facts of the case and not political motivations. If you look at the

00:05:04.640 Comey indictment, Martha, this was a grand jury indictment delivered in Alexandria, Virginia,

00:05:09.200 not exactly a hotbed of Donald Trump's political support. Uh, they, they were,

00:05:13.360 there were three required requested indictments. The grand jury returned two of those three

00:05:19.040 indictments. So I think they showed they were judicious. I think that it showed clearly that

00:05:23.680 there were a couple of things that James Comey did wrong. Comey's arraignment is set for October

00:05:28.580 9th. He faces one count of making false statements to Congress and one count of obstruction of an

00:05:34.380 investigative proceeding. Each carries a maximum of five years in prison. Mr. Comey maintains his

00:05:40.640 innocence. Ten people shot, at least four killed Sunday morning when a gunman rammed a vehicle

00:05:48.580 through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blank, Michigan, before opening

00:05:53.680 fire on the congregation. The suspect identified as a 40-year-old man from nearby Burton, Michigan,

00:06:00.480 a military veteran, according to reports based on his social media accounts, killed by police in a

00:06:06.700 shootout. The FBI is now leading the investigation, calling it an act of targeted violence, though

00:06:12.760 special agent in charge Reuben Coleman did not offer more specifics at a press briefing last night.

00:06:18.920 Police chief William Rennie saying seven more victims are in stable condition, one is in critical.

00:06:25.420 Investigators believe the suspect acted alone, deliberately setting the church on fire by

00:06:30.000 lighting an accelerant. The ATF confirming several suspected explosive devices were discovered at the

00:06:35.800 scene. Michigan State Police responding to multiple bomb threats throughout the community called in after

00:06:41.800 the attack. Authorities have cleared those areas and urged the community to remain vigilant. Authorities

00:06:47.460 expecting the number of victims to increase in the aftermath of the fire. Chief Rennie saying the

00:06:52.560 building is a total loss and some church members are still unaccounted for. Hundreds of people were in the

00:06:58.840 church at the time of the attack. One witness identified only by her first name, Paula, describing the

00:07:05.160 scene to Scripps News. One of our counselors was up speaking and we heard a big bang and the doors blew

00:07:13.060 and then everybody rushed out. Surreal. I didn't know what was going on. I didn't know what was going on

00:07:20.240 and I didn't know if we were going to have to get down because we couldn't see anybody. It was just scary.

00:07:24.980 I mean, I came to worship my Savior, Jesus Christ, and I didn't expect this to happen, of course,

00:07:32.720 you know, and I've lost friends in there. Law enforcement is working to search the suspect's

00:07:38.020 phone and residence looking for a motive. The New York Post reporting he served in the Marines from

00:07:43.500 2004 to 2008. Pictures of the alleged vehicle used in the attack show two large American flags mounted to

00:07:50.640 the back. President Trump writing on Truth Social yesterday, quote, I have been briefed on the horrendous

00:07:55.760 shooting. The suspect is dead, but there is still a lot to learn. This appears to be yet another targeted

00:08:01.540 attack on Christians in the United States of America. The Trump administration will keep the public posted

00:08:06.980 as we always do. In the meantime, pray for the victims and their families. This epidemic of violence in our

00:08:13.360 country must end immediately. Coming up, President Trump sending the National Guard to Portland, Oregon

00:08:21.540 as Portland sues to block the move. And New York City Mayor Eric Adams drops his troubled re-election bid

00:08:28.680 in an attempt to stop Democratic Socialist Zoran Mamdani.

00:08:37.420 You know all those fad diets. Half of Americans do it. And if you do it enough, 0.99

00:08:41.680 you could be at risk of diabetes, liver damage, heart attack, and stroke. Weight cycling is when

00:08:47.000 you lose 10 or more pounds, but then you put the pounds back on plus a couple more. That puts

00:08:53.020 tremendous strain on your organs and can lead to serious health issues. Bottom line, most people

00:08:57.960 need help to stop weight cycling. And this is why I want to tell you about non-prescription lean

00:09:03.000 created by doctors. Lean is an oral supplement, not a GLP-1 injectable. It uses studied ingredients,

00:09:11.020 which lean says target weight loss in three powerful ways, maintaining healthy blood sugar,

00:09:16.140 helping control appetite and cravings, burning fat by converting it to energy. And burning fat

00:09:21.500 helps keep the weight off. If you want to lose meaningful weight at a healthy pace and keep it off,

00:09:26.580 consider adding lean to your diet and exercise lifestyle. Get 20% off when you enter

00:09:31.660 mk at take lean.com. That's code mk at take lean.com.

00:09:39.780 Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Sunday ordering 200 National Guard troops to deploy in Portland,

00:09:46.360 Oregon for 60 days under an order to protect ICE and other federal property where protests

00:09:52.420 are occurring or are likely to. The previous morning on Truth Social, Mr. Trump directing

00:09:58.440 Secretary Hegseth to provide troops to protect ICE at the request of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

00:10:05.180 Mr. Trump writing on Truth Social, he is authorizing, quote, full force to protect, quote,

00:10:10.300 war ravaged Portland and any of our ICE facilities under siege from attack by Antifa

00:10:15.780 and other domestic terrorists. President Trump singling out protests around ICE facilities

00:10:21.680 in Portland on Thursday.

00:10:24.340 And you see what's happening in Portland. This is like nobody's ever seen anything like it.

00:10:28.260 Every night. And this has gone on for years. They just burned the place down. And, you know,

00:10:33.140 the shop owners, most of them have left. But the few shops that are open, they just use plywood and

00:10:37.560 just like three quarter inch plywood. Take a look at Portland sometime. These are wild. These are

00:10:44.320 crazy people. And they're trying to burn down buildings, including federal buildings. And we cannot 0.99

00:10:49.720 let our cities. And that's a small example. But it's the most violent example. It's every night.

00:10:56.560 And they've done it for years. You think maybe at some point they made their point and what are they

00:11:01.380 doing? But we're going to get out there and we're going to do a pretty big number of those people in

00:11:06.140 Portland that are doing that. Oregon and the city of Portland filing a lawsuit against Mr. Trump to

00:11:11.680 block the deployment, seeking a temporary restraining order. Governor Tina Kotak and Portland Mayor Keith

00:11:17.760 Wilson, both Democrats, maintain there's no need for troops in the city. Oregon officials calling an

00:11:23.860 emergency press conference on Saturday, Mayor Wilson saying his city is peaceful.

00:11:28.540 The number of necessary troops is zero in Portland and any other American city. And let me repeat that.

00:11:35.760 This is an American city. We do not need any intervention. This is not a military target.

00:11:42.500 The president will not find lawlessness or violence here. I've been so deeply disappointed to see the

00:11:48.380 footage from a half decade ago, recycled and then recycled again. If President Trump came to Portland

00:11:55.120 today, what he would find is people riding their bikes, playing sports, enjoying the sunshine, buying

00:12:02.580 groceries or produce from a farmer's market. At the end of the day, this may be a show of force,

00:12:09.540 but that's all it is. It's a big show. And after big show, everyone goes home. And that's what I

00:12:15.360 want to happen here today. In a Sunday morning phone interview with NBC, Mr. Trump saying, quote,

00:12:21.360 I spoke to the governor. She was very nice. But I said, well, wait a minute. Am I watching things on

00:12:27.020 television that are different from what's happening? My people tell me different. They are literally

00:12:31.440 attacking and there are fires all over the place. It looks terrible. Multiple news organizations

00:12:37.000 reporting on daily protesting activity outside of an ICE detention facility since June. At times,

00:12:43.580 those protests, indeed, turning violent. The Oregonian reporting in June, several people used

00:12:49.220 a stop sign as a makeshift battering ram, shattering the front door of the building. CBS 13 News reporting

00:12:56.220 some federal agents have been injured in recent protests, resulting in several protesters being charged

00:13:01.760 with assault. According to KTVB7, more than two dozen people have been arrested protesting Portland's

00:13:09.060 ICE facility. The exterior of that facility has been boarded up since June. Protesters spray painting

00:13:15.660 epithets and threats like Nazis and shoot ice pigs all over the building. On Sunday, video emerging 0.92

00:13:23.100 appearing to show some seven or so Portland cops retreating in the face of hundreds of protesters who

00:13:30.280 outnumbered them. The cops walking backward and then biking away. The protesters holding signs that read

00:13:36.600 F ICE, ICE equals terror, and obeying Trump makes you a war criminal. Police with riot gear backed up by

00:13:45.060 federal agents are seen in other video pushing back the protesters. As the state attorney general's

00:13:51.260 motion for a temporary restraining order was just filed, a court date for the hearing has not yet been set.

00:14:00.280 New York City Mayor Eric Adams dropping his re-election bid on Sunday. The decision announced

00:14:05.240 in a nearly nine-minute-long video posted to social media, largely focusing on his achievements in life

00:14:11.580 and as mayor and blaming the media. Despite all we've achieved, I cannot continue my re-election

00:14:19.560 campaign. The constant media speculation about my future and the campaign finance board's decision

00:14:27.340 to withhold millions of dollars have undermined my ability to raise the funds needed for a serious

00:14:35.340 campaign. In August, New York City's campaign finance board denying Mayor Adams' request for

00:14:42.100 millions in matching funds for the 10th time, citing paperwork errors as well as allegations linked to

00:14:48.340 the federal bribery case against Adams that was ultimately dismissed by the Trump DOJ.

00:14:53.340 Mayor Adams' name will remain on the ballot because the deadline to remove it passed in May.

00:14:59.820 Recent polls showing Adams hovering around 8 percent, trailing behind Democratic Socialist

00:15:05.620 candidate Zoran Mamdani, independent candidate and former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo,

00:15:10.960 who is in second. Republican candidate Curtis Lewa remains in third. Mamdani up 19 percent over

00:15:17.580 Cuomo in the Real Clear Politics polling average. Polling indicates a much tighter race and a hypothetical

00:15:23.140 head-to-head matchup between Cuomo and Mamdani. However, the Curtis Sliwa campaign indicating the

00:15:29.140 candidate has no plans to drop out. Adams did not endorse Cuomo, though in his social media post,

00:15:35.660 he did take a swipe at Mamdani.

00:15:37.620 Too often, insidious forces use local government to advance divisive agendas. With little regard for how it

00:15:46.740 hurts everyday New Yorkers, major change is welcome and necessary. But beware of those who claim the

00:15:56.060 answer to destroy the very system we built together over generations. That is not change. That is chaos.

00:16:05.820 Former Governor Cuomo releasing a statement, quote,

00:16:08.000 The choice Eric Adams made today was not an easy one, but I believe he is sincere in putting the

00:16:13.140 well-being of New York City ahead of personal ambition. We face destructive extremist forces

00:16:18.260 that would devastate our city through incompetence or ignorance, but it is not too late to stop them.

00:16:24.760 Mamdani telling News 12 he expected Adams to drop out, saying New Yorkers are ready to, quote,

00:16:29.520 move on from big money and small ideas. According to Polymarket, Mamdani had an 87 percent chance to win

00:16:36.780 the race before Adams dropped out. He now sits at 84 percent. The election is just five weeks away.

00:16:44.360 It will be held on November 4th. And that'll do it for your AM update. I'm Megan Kelly. Join me back
