00:00:43.840 Spencer Pratt's lead over City Councilwoman Nithya Rahman completely vanishing in the Los

00:00:48.400 Angeles mayor race over the weekend, as the fight for the final spot in November's runoff

00:00:53.020 intensifies. Let's call it quits, because I've had enough. Thank you, darling. Have a good time.

00:00:57.660 President Trump's rainy sit-down with NBC ends abruptly

00:01:01.660 after a series of increasingly tense exchanges.

00:01:05.180 There was a two-inch deep wound that hit the cartilage of Austin Metcalfe's sternum

00:01:09.360 and actually pierced one of the ventricles in his heart.

00:01:12.400 A rare Saturday court session in Texas,

00:01:15.540 with jurors hearing graphic testimony in the Carmelo Anthony murder trial

00:01:19.300 as prosecutors rest their case.

00:01:22.260 And no triple crown sweep, but still a stunning finish in the Belmont Stakes

00:01:26.060 as Golden Tempo makes history yet again. All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM

00:02:34.220 Former reality star Spencer Pratt's once promising lead over Los Angeles Councilwoman Nithya Raman

00:02:39.800 to make the runoff in November evaporating over the weekend as California's notoriously slow vote

00:02:45.700 count drags on. With one blue wave, a ballot drops after another. Last Tuesday, on the actual

00:02:51.860 election day, incumbent mayor Karen Bass leading the night, but failing to clinch the more than

00:02:56.760 50% needed to avoid a runoff. Pratt ending election night in what looked like a clear

00:03:01.500 second place with 30.4% of the vote. Pratt on Tuesday sounding confident about the next five

00:03:07.480 months. I was going to be happy if I wasn't moving forward because I would have known that God didn't

00:03:12.220 want me to be the mayor. But now I feel very confident that I am going to continue to work

00:03:17.340 hard, learn everything I need to learn, build my teams, show all the experience I'm going to

00:03:23.500 surround myself with because that's a concern people have. Oh, he has no experience. I'm going

00:03:27.680 to build that experience around. And we have five months to put the best team the city could ever

00:03:32.920 dream of around me. Raman ending election night with 22.4% of the vote, addressing supporters

00:03:39.000 in remarks that sounded like a candidate bracing for the end.

00:03:42.600 Many thousands of votes will be counted in the days ahead,

00:03:47.020 and we may not get an answer we like,

00:03:49.340 but regardless of what happens next,

00:03:52.460 nobody, nobody can take away what all of us have built together.

00:03:57.540 But by this weekend, the race looking very different,

00:04:00.160 as there were still hundreds of thousands of ballots still outstanding.

00:04:04.540 In California, mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day

00:04:07.200 can still be counted if they arrive up to a week later,

00:04:11.460 meaning the numbers can keep shifting for days

00:04:13.840 after voters leave the polls.

00:04:16.040 And the New York Times reporting,

00:04:17.320 Rahman began making up ground

00:04:18.640 in the first major post-election updates 0.81

00:04:20.820 with the councilwoman outperforming Pratt 0.97

00:04:22.840 among newly counted ballots on Wednesday and Thursday.

00:04:26.280 Throughout the weekend, the gap continuing to narrow,

00:04:29.060 Rahman winning the Saturday ballot drop

00:04:31.020 with Rahman not only beating Pratt,

00:04:32.880 but even outpacing Bass,

00:04:34.340 taking 40% of the newly counted Los Angeles City vote to Bass's 33% and Pratt's 18%.

00:04:40.540 As of yesterday afternoon, Pratt's lead dwindling to just about 1 point, 27.32% to

00:04:47.620 Raman's 26.21%. And then, with last night's latest vote count coming in,

00:04:53.000 Raman officially surpassing Pratt, moving into second place. Prediction market Kalshi now putting

00:04:58.320 the odds of a Bass-Ramen runoff now at 99%. The drawn-out count becoming its own political

00:05:04.800 flashpoint, with Pratt's vanishing lead fueling a wave of online skepticism from supporters and

00:05:10.040 commentators, questioning how a race could shift so dramatically after Election Day.

00:05:15.120 California leads the nation in voting by mail, sending ballots to every active registered voter

00:05:20.300 and seeing more than 80% of voters return ballots by mail in 2024. But those ballots still have to

00:05:26.380 go through a lengthy processing period before they are counted, allowing the numbers to keep

00:05:30.760 shifting for days after Election Day. California's Secretary of State office requires counties to

00:05:36.080 complete the official canvas by 30 days after Election Day, including counting, auditing,

00:05:41.600 and certification. But Republican strategist Mike Murphy telling NBCLA the long wait is

00:05:47.200 damaging public trust. In your view, what is the impact when we vote and there is suspense for

00:05:54.520 weeks as we count close to half the ballots it's unacceptable now you know we could do better but

00:06:02.020 that's kind of the california state motto now in most government things right but does it have a

00:06:07.020 corrosive effect on the process you know i worry about and we might see this if the scenario where

00:06:13.280 raman catches up with bass pratt is going to pull out the trump hymnal and start screaming oh they

00:06:20.580 put the fix in it the machine you know it's all corrupt and well that is not true it is corrosive

00:06:28.020 and the average voter uh it looks at this and thinks what why the hell does it take so long

00:06:33.120 to honestly count the vote what's going on and people are so cynical about politics they think

00:06:37.780 oh yeah there's somebody in a back room you know gives the iggy to somebody and cut to the machines

00:06:43.000 all change so yes i think it is corrosive which is why it's worth investing to run a 24-hour 0.98

00:06:48.860 operation and count these damn votes a lot quicker. The Los Angeles Times reporting the 0.96

00:06:53.560 late count trend was not a surprise to election analysts, who expected Rahman to gain ground as

00:06:58.700 mail-in ballots came in, reporting, quote, many left-of-center voters, Rahman's base, held on to

00:07:03.680 their mail-in ballots until the last minute as they waited to choose between Democratic

00:07:07.800 gubernatorial candidates. They also say younger, more progressive voters tend to hold on to their

00:07:12.620 ballots longer generally. The Times also noting that while the L.A. mayor's race is officially

00:07:17.260 nonpartisan, Pratt is a registered Republican running in an overwhelmingly Democratic city.

00:07:22.580 Pratt, for his part, still insisting the race is not over, posting yesterday afternoon to X,

00:07:27.580 quote, we've got all the way till July 6th to keep counting. They're not the only ones who

00:07:32.220 know where to find votes. We'll stay on the story on the MK Show all week.

00:07:37.980 President Donald Trump's sit down with NBC's Kristen Welker on Meet the Press yesterday

00:07:42.380 turned increasingly combative during a rainy interview in rural Wisconsin marked by interruptions,

00:07:48.400 tense exchanges, and an abrupt ending. The interview, taped Friday, taking place inside

00:07:53.820 what appeared to be a large barn or shed, with rain clearly heard pounding outside. Welker even

00:08:00.540 noting at one point they had paused the interview for heavy rain to pass, and later pausing again

00:08:05.780 for an audio issue. As the interview continued despite the delays, the tension between Mr. Trump

00:08:11.020 and Welker only growing. Welker pressing the president on the ongoing conflict with Iran,

00:08:15.960 where a peace deal remains elusive. One of your consistent campaign promises

00:08:21.680 was no new wars going all the way back to 2015. Did you break that promise to the American people?

00:08:28.920 I had to stop a country, very powerful, very dangerous country, from having a nuclear weapon 0.99

00:08:36.860 because they'd use it but they're nuts okay they're crazy people i deal with them and very 0.97

00:08:43.500 high-strung people really crazy and get along with them i like them but you don't want to let 0.88

00:08:51.180 them have a nuclear weapon and i'm doing the world a service so you're saying you didn't break your

00:08:57.020 promise and yet mr president in your first term you held to that promise and it was so fundamental

00:09:04.460 to who you were as a candidate to a first-term president?

00:09:08.320 I didn't guarantee no war.

00:09:10.860 Why would I have built the strongest military in the world?

00:09:13.180 I built our military.

00:09:14.480 So when you say, I promised, I didn't promise anything.

00:09:18.660 I don't like these endless wars.

00:09:20.860 This is not an endless war.

00:09:22.680 From there, the conversation turning to the economic fallout at home.

00:09:26.560 Welker pressing President Trump on the strain facing farmers,

00:09:29.900 a core part of his political coalition.

00:09:32.640 What's your message to farmers, though, Mr. President, who say they are struggling,

00:09:37.080 they're struggling to make ends meet?

00:09:38.500 Are you ready? Am I allowed to talk? You keep asking questions and you don't listen to the

00:09:42.640 answers. I love the farmers and the farmers love me. The farmers trust me because I had a choice

00:09:47.440 to make. I could keep it going. The farmers were doing great. Fertilizer was very cheap.

00:09:53.180 Everything was cheap. Gasoline was very low. Everything was very low. I could have kept it

00:09:57.600 that way. But I said I have to take a little bit of return. The farmers can understand it better

00:10:01.460 than anybody. We're going to have higher gasoline. We're going to have a little higher fertilizer,

00:10:05.400 et cetera, et cetera. But I'm going to get rid of a nuclear weapon in the hands of very dangerous

00:10:11.220 people. Excuse me. Wait. It should have been done for 47 years. No president had the guts to do it.

00:10:16.560 I did it and I've done it. It's almost complete. As soon as that's complete, gasoline prices are

00:10:22.640 going to drop like a rock. The interview eventually veering into California's slow vote count when the

00:10:28.060 tension that had been building through the interview finally boiled over.

00:10:32.040 Do you think it's appropriate that they have an election and five days later they're nowhere

00:10:36.980 close to picking a winner? State and local officials acknowledge they are slow. They're

00:10:40.680 urging. No, they're crooked. They're urging the votes to be counted quickly. That's how they vote

00:10:44.500 in California. They're crooked, just like you're crooked. Your press is crooked and meet the press 0.99

00:10:48.040 is crooked. To be fair, I'm not crooked. Really? Well, you play right into their hands.

00:10:52.300 Let's continue. You're either crooked or you're stupid. You play right into their hands with 1.00

00:10:56.660 this rap you know that these elections are rigged your network knows that they're rigged and you're

00:11:04.180 crooked and meet the press is crooked and so is abc and cbs and cnn but mr president your one-sided

00:11:11.680 crooked networks right let's call it quits because i've had enough thank you darling have a good time

00:11:16.140 mr president let's please i traveled all the way to wisconsin i've sat in the rain with you i know

00:11:21.880 And that is where the interview ended, with Welker later saying she and the president

00:11:37.080 spoke after the cameras stopped rolling and that the president agreed to another interview

00:11:41.220 at a later date.

00:11:43.780 Coming up, emotional testimony in Texas, as jurors hear graphic details about the fatal

00:11:49.120 stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. And Golden Tempo, making history yet again,

00:11:54.540 storming from behind to win the Belmont Stakes.

00:12:01.860 Everybody's talking about weight loss injections because the results can be

00:12:05.280 so dramatic. They work by lowering blood sugar and reducing appetite. But what if you're looking

00:12:10.320 to lose weight, but you're not interested in painful weekly injections, especially when you

00:12:15.060 hear about some of those intense side effects. That's why doctors created a weight loss supplement

00:12:20.020 called Lean, and the results could be remarkable. Lean says the studied ingredients in their product

00:12:26.800 have been shown to lower your blood sugar, burn fat by converting it into energy, and curb your

00:12:32.480 appetite and cravings so you are not as hungry. But listen, Lean is not for the casual dieter

00:12:38.040 with only a few pounds to lose. The doctors at Brickhouse Nutrition created Lean for frustrated

00:13:03.900 Saturday court session after jurors hearing day three of emotional witness testimony in the murder

00:13:08.940 trial of Carmelo Anthony. Anthony, now 19 years old, accused of fatally stabbing the 17-year-old

00:13:15.020 Austin Metcalf at a Frisco, Texas high school track meet in April of last year. The two boys,

00:13:20.460 who attended different schools, involved in a confrontation under Metcalf's team's tent.

00:13:25.520 Prosecutors say Metcalf and other students repeatedly told Anthony he was in the wrong

00:13:29.480 tent and needed to leave, with the confrontation escalating after Metcalf touched or pushed

00:13:34.820 Anthony. Prosecutors say Anthony then stabbed Metcalf in the chest. Anthony now facing a charge

00:13:41.140 of murder, a first-degree felony that carries anywhere from 5 to 99 years in prison. Prosecutors

00:13:47.840 calling a 17-year-old witness to the stand Saturday morning, a member of Metcalf's track

00:13:52.300 team. The student testifying that he was in the tent when Metcalf asked Anthony to leave,

00:13:57.600 and it was his impression that Anthony was trying to provoke Metcalf. A second teenage witness asked

00:14:02.460 by prosecutors what Anthony did when asked to leave the tent. Quote, he doesn't leave. He gets

00:14:07.340 angry and tries to provoke us, saying, make me leave. Another witness taking the stand, one of

00:14:12.500 Metcalfe's teammates who also knew Anthony. The witness saying he saw Anthony under the tent

00:14:16.720 and initially greeted him before Metcalfe asked Anthony, quote, who are you? The team testifying,

00:14:22.400 Anthony became defensive when he was asked to leave. Quote, Carmelo said you'll have to move

00:14:27.140 me. The witness saying Metcalf then put his hand on Anthony's back, and he saw Anthony's hand go

00:14:32.680 into his backpack, the teen telling jurors he did not expect anything dangerous to be inside because

00:14:38.040 quote, we're at a track meet. On cross, the defense pressing the witness on his relationship with

00:14:43.420 Anthony, showing jurors photos of the two at social gatherings together. The witness acknowledging he

00:14:48.600 and Anthony were quote, cool with each other, but did not hang out one-on-one very much. The defense

00:14:54.040 asking why, when the confrontation began, he did not step in and tell the others he knew Anthony.

00:14:59.240 The witness replying he was focused on the track meet and did not think he needed to calm the

00:15:03.140 situation down. The prosecution then calling its final witness, the Collin County Medical Examiner.

00:15:09.520 Before testimony began, the state warning those in the courtroom, including Metcalfe's family,

00:15:14.320 that the evidence would be graphic and anyone who needed to step out should do so. Metcalfe's

00:15:19.240 family leaving the courtroom before the medical examiner took the stand. Court TV's Cody

00:15:23.860 Thomas, a reporter following the trial from inside the courtroom, describing that testimony.

00:15:29.140 We heard about this two-inch gaping wound. She described gaping, and she described the

00:15:35.340 difference between gaping and a slit-style stabbing wound. Gaping is more of it's kind of

00:15:40.280 like filleted open, you know, not to be insensitive to it, but that's the way she kind of described it

00:15:44.920 on the stand, and that it was a two-inch deep wound that hit the cartilage of Austin Metcalfe's

00:15:49.840 and actually pierced one of the ventricles in his heart.

00:15:53.340 So he was literally stabbed in the heart,

00:15:55.160 which is likely why the CPR and life-saving efforts

00:15:57.480 weren't working because no matter how much

00:15:58.860 the heart was pumping out, it was leaking from the source.

00:16:01.760 So it was really establishing the gravity of the wound

00:16:05.800 and the jury again got to see four pictures.

00:16:08.540 Two of them were Austin Metcalf on the autopsy table

00:16:11.340 and two of them were the heart removed from the body.

00:16:14.100 That's what the medical examiner was describing

00:16:16.120 they were seeing.

00:16:16.960 So of course I'd imagine that a family didn't want to hear

00:16:19.840 The state resting its case, calling 21 total witnesses over three days.

00:16:24.640 The defense then asking the judge for a directed verdict,

00:16:27.860 essentially arguing prosecutors had failed to present enough evidence for the case to even go to the jury.

00:16:33.460 The judge denying the motion, allowing the trial to continue.

00:16:36.920 The defense then calling several witnesses of its own,

00:16:39.500 trying to show Anthony had not crashed the tent as aggressively as prosecutors suggested.

00:16:44.160 A football and track coach at Anthony's school testifying,

00:16:46.700 he knew of no specific rule barring athletes from entering another team's tent area.

00:16:51.700 But on cross-examination, prosecutors repeatedly bringing the focus back to the knife.

00:16:56.260 The coach agreeing weapons were not allowed at track meets,

00:16:59.120 and there was no reason for an athlete to have a knife there.

00:17:01.980 The trial's set to continue later today.

00:17:05.480 Out in the center of the racetrack, Commandments running a giant race,

00:17:09.080 Renegade in between, and Golden Tempo!

00:17:11.620 Golden Tempo! Renegade! Commandment on the outside!

00:17:15.140 Golden Tempo from last to first has to fend off Commandment in the final strides.

00:17:20.480 Golden Tempo pulls away late.

00:17:23.460 Golden Tempo has won the Belmont Stakes.

00:17:27.300 Golden Tempo with another remarkable come-from-behind win,

00:17:30.840 this time at the 158th Belmont Stakes, just over a month after winning the Kentucky Derby.

00:17:36.500 Jockey Jose Ortiz again riding Golden Tempo to victory,

00:17:39.680 winning by a length and a quarter over Commandment,

00:17:42.120 with Derby runner-up Renegade finishing third.

00:17:45.140 The win making even more history for trainer Cherie DeVoe, who became the first woman to

00:17:50.680 train a Kentucky Derby winner earlier this year, and now becomes the first woman to train

00:17:55.380 a winner of multiple Triple Crown races. 0.98

00:17:58.300 DeVoe also becoming the second woman in four years to win the Belmont, after Jenna Ananucci 0.76

00:18:03.260 trained Archangelo to victory in 2023.

00:18:06.260 Here, DeVoe reacting to the win at a post-race press conference.

00:18:10.320 I keep saying it's surreal and it's overwhelming and it's amazing and all the superlatives,

00:18:14.040 But I kind of wrongfully probably thought that because of the way the race was run in the Derby, he was having to go out and prove himself.

00:18:26.920 We felt the best horse won the Kentucky Derby, and it just solidified that today.

00:18:32.420 For the second year in a row, the same horse winning the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes without running in the Preakness.

00:18:39.260 DeVoe and Golden Tempo's owners choosing to skip that middle leg,

00:18:42.800 a decision that ended any chance at a triple crown sweep.

00:18:45.940 DeVoe asked after the race if she believes Golden Tempo could have won the triple crown.

00:18:50.300 DeVoe responding, quote,

00:18:51.620 We made our decision, and we won today, and we're going to be happy about that.
