00:00:00.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Megan Kelly. It's Monday, March 17th, 2025. And happy St. Patrick's
00:00:09.060 Day. This is your AM update. So are you the right person to lead the party at this moment?
00:00:14.880 Let me put it this way. First, I don't think there's anybody. Well, I think I know how to
00:00:19.560 win seats back in the Senate. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer resisting calls for his
00:00:24.000 resignation as a deeply divided Democrat Party sinks to record low approval.
00:00:28.920 President Trump invokes the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport Trenda Aragua gang members
00:00:36.140 and a D.C. judge blocks the move. The two sides are today a lot closer. We had some really positive
00:00:44.020 results. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff says Russia is coming closer to accepting a peace deal as
00:00:50.240 intensity on the battlefield ramps up. And a new NBC poll has good news for President Trump.
00:00:56.320 All that and more coming up in just a moment in a busy AM update.
00:01:00.660 Four years of crushing interest rates, runaway inflation, and reckless government spending.
00:01:07.680 And who is paying the price? You are. You might have bills stacking up. You might have debt
00:01:12.040 collectors on your back. You might barely be able to keep food on the table. And that's stressful.
00:01:17.260 Done with debt can be a way out. These guys have developed a new aggressive strategy. Many of them
00:01:22.460 actually designed to get you out of debt permanently without bankruptcy and without loans. Done with debt
00:01:28.140 will stand between you and your bill collectors. They can go head to head with their creditors,
00:01:32.100 getting your balances reduced, your interest rates slashed, and penalties stopped. They create a plan to
00:01:38.200 end your debt fast and put more cash in your pocket every month. And right now, Done with Debt is accepting
00:01:43.620 new clients. But you need to act fast. Some of these credit relief programs expire. Before you make
00:01:49.740 another payment, consider a visit to donewithdebt.com or call 1-888-322-1054 right now. Speak with one of
00:01:58.500 their debt relief strategists for free. Go to donewithdebt.com. That's donewithdebt.com.
00:02:08.280 Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's political career on the rocks after handing President Trump a big
00:02:14.020 win by keeping the government open. On Friday, nine Democrats joined with Senator Schumer to advance
00:02:21.660 the continuing resolution, or CR, paving the way to keep the government open for another six months.
00:02:29.040 Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, New Hampshire Senator Maggie
00:02:33.900 Hassan, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, Michigan Senator Gary Peters, Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz,
00:02:39.600 New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, New Hampshire's Jean Shaheen, Independent Senator from Maine,
00:02:45.480 Angus King, all also voting to advance the bill. House Democrats like New York Congressman Alexandria
00:02:51.860 Ocasio-Cortez, California Congressman Robert Garcia, and Massachusetts Congresswoman Ayanna
00:02:57.680 Presley slamming Senator Schumer and the others. It is almost unthinkable why Senate Democrats would vote
00:03:06.520 to hand the few pieces of leverage that we have away for free when we've been sent here to protect
00:03:13.960 Social Security, protect Medicaid, and protect Medicare. I think Senate Democrats, I think the
00:03:18.720 Senate leader made an enormous miscalculation. This is not a time where we should be bending the knee
00:03:24.980 to Donald Trump. Again, I don't think we should be moving in any way to elicit a praise from Donald
00:03:31.140 Trump, who has no respect for Congress and the power of the purse. Axios reporting,
00:03:36.340 quote, several members, including moderates, have begun voicing support for a primary challenge to
00:03:42.000 Schumer, floating Representatives AOC and Dan Goldman as possible candidates. Soros-backed
00:03:48.260 progressive group Indivisible also calling for Senator Schumer to step down. The group releasing
00:03:53.940 a statement over the weekend saying 82 percent of its leaders in New York and 91 percent nationwide
00:03:59.920 voted in favor of calling for Mr. Schumer to step aside. House Minority Leader Hakeem
00:04:05.800 Jeffries in a Friday presser initially refusing to affirm his support for Senator Schumer.
00:04:12.420 Is it time for new leadership in the Senate? Next question. However, by Saturday, Mr. Jeffries was
00:04:18.000 appearing on MSNBC providing some public support for Mr. Schumer signaling leadership is sticking
00:04:24.440 together, at least for now. Look, Chuck and I disagreed as it relates to the approach and outcome
00:04:31.340 relative to what we viewed as a reckless Republican spending bill. At the same period of time,
00:04:39.260 Chuck and I agree on the overwhelming majority of issues moving forward.
00:04:44.060 Senator Schumer, who says he worried a shutdown would have given more power to President Trump and
00:04:49.700 Doge, telling the New York Times, the interview podcast, he's still the best man to lead.
00:04:55.580 So are you the right person to lead the party at this moment?
00:04:58.440 Let me put it this way. First, I don't think there's anybody. Well, I think I know how to win
00:05:03.700 seats back in the Senate, which I've proven. I'm not the only person, nor should I be. I'm sort of like
00:05:08.920 an orchestra leader. And there's a great deal of talent in the orchestra. And my job is to highlight
00:05:14.580 all those talents and emphasize those talents. As Democrats in Congress jockey over the future
00:05:19.340 of their party, Democrat Party approval sinks to a record low in a new CNN poll. Democrat-aligned
00:05:25.740 adults say 52 percent to 48 percent that the leadership is taking the Democrat Party in the
00:05:31.760 wrong direction. 57 percent to 42 percent of Dems and Dem-aligned independents think Democrats should
00:05:39.140 mainly work to stop the Republican agenda. The survey taken before Senator Schumer's deeply
00:05:44.560 unpopular decision to support the CR rather than shut down the government. Among adults overall,
00:05:50.180 the Democrat Party sits at a paltry 29 percent approval. That's a 20-point drop since January 2021
00:05:57.380 and a record low dating back to 1992.
00:06:00.620 The Trump administration deporting hundreds of individuals under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798
00:06:10.480 in spite of a judge's order trying to block the move. The act allows the government to detain and
00:06:16.500 deport people from enemy nations in wartime or those who have invaded America. President Trump on Friday
00:06:24.260 invoking the act against Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, a recently designated foreign terrorist
00:06:30.480 organization. The proclamation stating members of TDA have, quote, unlawfully infiltrated the U.S.
00:06:37.340 and are conducting irregular warfare and undertaking hostile actions against the United States.
00:06:43.420 On Saturday, the ACLU and a group called Democracy Forward filing a lawsuit alleging that the White
00:06:49.260 House was preparing to deport five Venezuelans under this act. Chief Judge of the D.C. District Court
00:06:55.700 James Bosberg initially ordering that those deportations be paused for two weeks. The judge
00:07:02.560 later in the day expanding his order to, quote, all non-citizens in U.S. custody subject to the
00:07:08.960 Alien Enemies Act. This, notwithstanding the fact that the Supreme Court has held that the Alien
00:07:14.520 Enemies Act precludes judicial review of any removal orders, holding, quote, such great war powers may be
00:07:22.700 abused, no doubt, but that is a bad reason for having judges supervise their exercise. In a truly
00:07:29.620 extraordinary order, Judge Bosberg went further, verbally mandating the immediate return of two
00:07:37.060 planes already airborne carrying deportees to Honduras and El Salvador. The Associated Press reporting the
00:07:44.360 verbal directive to return the planes was not included in the judge's written order. The president of El
00:07:50.860 Salvador, Nayib Bukele, posting on X early Sunday morning, a headline detailing the judge's order
00:07:56.720 and the caption, oopsie, too late, with a laughing emoji. Shortly after that, President Bukele published
00:08:04.120 a video showing dozens of handcuffed men departing a U.S. plane and processing into an El Salvadorian prison
00:08:10.240 complex. Secretary of State Marco Rubio posting on X, quote, we sent over 250 alien enemy members of
00:08:17.940 Tren de Aragua, which El Salvador has agreed to hold in their very good jails at a fair price.
00:08:24.360 Fox News reporting press secretary Caroline Levitt says the Trump administration did not refuse to
00:08:29.360 comply with a court order. Ms. Levitt says, quote, the order, which has no lawful basis, was issued after
00:08:35.800 terrorists, TDA aliens, had already been removed from U.S. territory. The next hearing is set for Friday.
00:08:42.560 Today, the Trump administration is appealing the judge's interference. Coming up, as the Ukrainian
00:08:49.380 battlefield intensifies, U.S. and Russian officials inch closer to a ceasefire. And five years later, the New York
00:08:57.520 Times dares to say Americans were misled on COVID. You think?
00:09:03.120 More and more, we are seeing people in their 70s looking amazing, right? And it's a reminder that
00:09:11.420 now is the time to take better care of ourselves, of our health. And that includes working out and
00:09:16.580 lifting weights. This is why I want to tell you about Jacked Up Fitness. Jacked Up Fitness is the

00:10:10.500 As the war against Ukraine rages on, the U.S. and Russia inch closer to a ceasefire agreement.
00:10:16.060 President Trump likely to speak on the phone later this week with Russian President Vladimir Putin,
00:10:20.500 the second call since Mr. Trump's second term began. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff,
00:10:25.380 fresh off a trip to Moscow, involving hours of talks with President Putin,
00:10:29.900 telling CNN the two sides are closer than ever before.
00:10:33.040 Before this visit, there was another visit. And before that visit, the two sides were
00:10:37.340 miles apart in where they were. The two sides are today a lot closer. We had some really positive
00:10:44.580 results coming out of Saudi Arabia, discussions led by our national security advisor, Mike Waltz,
00:10:50.400 and our secretary of state, Marco Rubio. I described my conversation with President Putin
00:10:56.320 as equally positive. So the two sides have, we've narrowed the differences between them.
00:11:04.420 Mr. Witkoff says President Trump aims to finalize the deal within weeks,
00:11:08.580 describing to CBS the issues both sides are hammering out.
00:11:11.320 There are regions that we all know the Russians are focused on. There is a nuclear reactor that
00:11:18.640 supplies quite a bit of electricity to the country of Ukraine. That's got to be dealt with.
00:11:25.280 There's access to ports. There's the Black Sea potential agreement. There's just there's so many
00:11:34.340 elements, Margaret, to the implementation of a ceasefire here. And everybody is committed,
00:11:41.160 all stakeholders, including the Europeans, to doing everything we need to do to get to a
00:11:46.820 successful resolution here. Russian forces currently control about 20 percent of Ukraine.
00:11:52.320 Late last week, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz telling Fox News the Ukrainians may have to give
00:11:57.860 up the Donbass region as part of a settlement. That region compromising about nine percent of Ukrainian
00:12:03.700 territory. The majority of its residents are primarily Russian speakers. ABC's Martha Raddatz
00:12:09.900 pushing back on the notion that the Russians should be allowed to retain any captured territory.
00:12:14.860 Russia could be given the Donbass in addition to hanging on to Crimea, even though they invaded Ukraine.
00:12:21.900 Martha, we have to ask ourselves, is it in our natural interest? Is it realistic? Are we going to drive
00:12:29.120 every Russian off of every inch of Ukrainian soil, including Crimea? And what the strategy of the
00:12:37.080 Biden administration was, was as long as it takes, as much as it takes, no matter what the timeline is,
00:12:43.120 which is essentially endless warfare. Late last week, Reuters reporting a Ukrainian government
00:12:48.560 official acknowledging Kiev cannot recapture their territory through military force. The unnamed
00:12:54.060 official saying, quote, Ukraine cannot recover all of its territory right now by military force.
00:12:58.260 Yes, we understand this. We understand that some of our land will need to be returned diplomatically,
00:13:03.620 which can, of course, take time. Ukrainian forces retreating from a small area of captured
00:13:09.180 Russian territory in Kursk. The New York Times reporting the withdrawal comes, quote, amid a swift
00:13:14.600 Russian advance backed by relentless airstrikes and drones. Ukrainian soldiers telling the Times the
00:13:21.680 strategy now is about controlling defensive positions and preventing the Russians from opening a new front
00:13:27.000 in this war. The fighting only intensifying as negotiators work toward peace.
00:13:35.000 New polling from NBC News showing strong numbers for President Trump among registered voters.
00:13:41.680 44 percent saying the country is on the right track versus 54 percent saying it's on the wrong track.
00:13:47.640 That happens to be the best polling in 20 years. NBC's national political correspondent,
00:13:53.180 Steve Kornacki, putting those numbers into perspective.
00:13:55.740 The mood of the country. This really jumped out. We ask folks, is it on the right direction
00:14:00.280 or the wrong direction? That 44 percent you say right direction, that's up since November. And if that
00:14:05.780 doesn't seem like a lot, the last time it cracked 40 percent, you got to go back to 2012. The last time
00:14:11.280 it actually hit 44 or higher, January of 2004.
00:14:15.180 President Trump's approval rating also hitting his best ever mark as president. 47 percent approving
00:14:22.480 to 51 percent disapproving. Among independents, the split is 30 percent who approve, 67 percent who
00:14:29.480 don't. On immigration, the president scoring his highest marks. 55 percent of voters approve of Mr.
00:14:35.280 Trump's handling of border security and immigration compared to 43 percent who disapprove. 56 percent say the
00:14:42.240 president brings the right kind of change compared to just 18 percent who say he brings the wrong kind
00:14:49.000 of change on immigration. For all of the media attacks against it, Doge faring all right. 46 percent
00:14:55.740 say it's a good idea compared to 40 percent who say it isn't. On the economy, the president not faring
00:15:01.940 quite as well. Just 18 percent of voters rating the economy as excellent or good. 54 percent disapprove of
00:15:08.640 Mr. Trump's handling of the economy. 44 percent approve. In recent weeks, the media focusing very
00:15:15.020 heavily on concerns of recession. Your attitudes about the economy showed another decline on Friday.
00:15:22.140 How concerned are you because of that about a recession? Do you think we're headed for a recession?
00:15:28.200 Will these policies be worth it if they lead to a recession, even a short-term recession?
00:15:33.980 Treasury Secretary Scott Besson on Sunday's Meet the Press criticizing the media's
00:15:38.860 coverage of the administration. Look, what I am not going to say that went on for a long time
00:15:44.540 under the Biden administration and for a lot of the media, and I'm not going to point fingers,
00:15:49.800 but they used to say it was a vibe session and the American people don't know what they talk about.
00:15:55.200 Clearly, they are traumatized from what's happened with this affordability crisis that was brought on
00:16:01.020 by the previous administration. They want relief. We've been in for eight weeks. We are putting
00:16:07.660 the policies in place that will make the affordability crisis go down, inflation moderate.
00:16:14.540 I am confident that the American people will come our way, even if some of the media narrative doesn't.
00:16:19.940 Five years after the debut of Two Weeks to Slow the Spread, New York Times columnist Zeynick Tufekci
00:16:30.200 dares to write, we were badly misled about the event that changed our lives. Really?
00:16:38.220 Tufekci, whose own Times colleague, Apoorva Mandavilli, once suggested it was racist to suggest
00:16:44.340 the virus came from a lab leak, now writes, quote, in 2020, when people started speculating that a
00:16:50.700 laboratory accident might have been the spark that started the COVID-19 pandemic, they were treated
00:16:56.300 like kooks and cranks. Ms. Mandavilli's tweet, not specifically acknowledged anywhere in her piece.
00:17:03.800 Ms. Tufekci admits in her column that some officials hid crucial facts and misled the public
00:17:09.200 in order to promote the appearance of consensus. In 2023, independent journalist Matt Taibbi revealed
00:17:16.420 the Biden administration was working in conjunction with social media companies to
00:17:21.360 censor information relating to COVID. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford professor and leading
00:17:27.260 advocate against lockdowns, was censored and ostracized and smeared by then-NIH head Francis Collins,
00:17:34.380 who called him a fringe epidemiologist. Joe Rogan, too, along with anyone who dared question the Biden
00:17:40.720 administration's COVID dogma, was mocked by the media, including the Times, as anti-science.
00:17:46.680 Ms. Tufekci's latest column comes after years of her promoting masks, despite the evidence showing
00:17:52.360 they did not work, and attacking contrarian voices. For example, a November 2020 Times column is headlined,
00:17:59.560 On masks and clinical trials, Rand Paul's tweeting is just plain wrong. The column reading, quote,
00:18:06.520 mask wearing is courteous, a sound method to reduce the suffering from this terrible pathogen
00:18:12.000 and help us get our lives back as much as possible. In May of 2021, Ms. Tufekci dared to question the CDC,
00:18:19.540 asking if updated guidance stating vaccinated individuals need not wear masks was politically
00:18:25.980 motivated. Can you believe this woman is now writing this for the New York Times?
00:18:29.900 In September 2022, Ms. Tufekci authoritatively wrote,
00:18:34.380 not only will a booster with the new vaccines decrease the likelihood of infection and severe
00:18:39.480 illness and help reduce transmission of the virus, it could also decrease the likelihood of
00:18:44.980 developing long COVID. That came a full year after the science showed the vaccine did not stop the
00:18:52.520 spread of the virus. The New York Times finally playing some COVID catch up with zero admissions
00:18:57.880 about its own failures in presenting facts. We don't forgive you. And that'll do it for your AM
