00:00:30.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Megyn Kelly. It's Monday, May 4th,
00:00:36.300 2026, and this is your AM Update. There was a significant effort by President Trump and
00:00:42.980 the administration to make it happen, but in the end, a deal couldn't be reached.
00:00:47.500 Spirit Airlines abruptly shutting down after years of financial troubles and a blocked merger

00:01:38.660 All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM update.
00:01:45.660 Here's a question. How many brokers does it take to ensure your business? If you are like most

00:01:56.620 no clear view of how it all fits together. And when questions come up, it's not easy to get the
00:02:01.300 clarity you need. My God, just the word insurance, it's like you cower in fear, but super sure

00:03:18.960 34 years. The discount airline releasing a statement Saturday morning, quote,
00:03:24.000 it is with great disappointment that Spirit Airlines has started winding down its global
00:03:28.400 operations effective immediately. All flights have been canceled and customer service is no
00:03:34.000 longer available. The statement indicating customers with outstanding tickets will be
00:03:38.560 refunded. Thousands of passengers, as well as pilots and crew, left stranded as a result of
00:03:44.380 the sudden closure. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announcing a coordinated effort
00:03:49.640 among U.S. airlines to return passengers home at costs similar to their discount Spirit tickets.
00:03:56.440 United, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest are all capping ticket prices for Spirit customers
00:04:01.880 with proof of ticket purchases on the now-defunct airline. In addition, American, Delta, Allegiant,
00:04:08.260 and Frontier will offer temporary discounts to all passengers' traveling routes overlapping with
00:04:14.200 Spirit. Some airlines also offering the ability for Spirit's 17,000 employees to jump the line
00:04:21.080 in applying for a new job. The collapse comes after years of financial hardship for the airline.
00:04:27.060 In 2023, the Biden Department of Justice, backed by several states, suing to block a proposed
00:04:33.040 merger between Spirit and JetBlue, a deal the airline had hoped would stabilize its finances.
00:04:39.260 Then Attorney General Merrick Garland announcing the interference.
00:04:42.900 Our complaint alleges that JetBlue's proposed $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit
00:04:48.380 violates Section 7 of the Clayton Act. We allege that if allowed to proceed, this merger will
00:04:55.020 limit choices and drive up ticket prices for passengers across the country. And we further
00:05:01.120 allege that the impact of this merger will be particularly harmful for travelers who rely on
00:05:07.000 what are known as ultra-low-cost carriers in order to fly. Those include working and middle-class
00:05:13.540 Americans who travel for personal as opposed to business reasons and who must pay their own way.
00:05:20.180 By acquiring spirit, JetBlue will eliminate the largest ultra-low-cost carrier in the United
00:05:26.720 states. That's our job, basically said the Biden administration, blocking the merger and effectively
00:05:32.440 signing Spirit's death warrant. Then Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg in this Politico
00:05:38.080 interview, fully backing the move. Our department, the Department of Transportation, has generally
00:05:43.760 not gotten involved in these merger cases, but that's changing today. It is so important to make
00:05:51.000 sure that passengers have choices, that they have access to low fares, that they have access to
00:05:57.060 competition. And yet we've seen less and less and less of that competition over the years. We are
00:06:02.980 taking a step that, again, is unusual in terms of recent years, but we think is the right thing to
00:06:08.380 do, supporting the DOJ's lawsuit and independently using our own authorities, which are a little bit
00:06:15.240 different from the DOJ, starting our own investigation and taking other actions.
00:06:20.060 In early 2024, a federal judge blocking the merger, agreeing with the Biden DOJ that the
00:06:25.680 $3.8 billion merger was anti-competitive. In March of that year, JetBlue formally
00:06:31.200 abandoning plans to acquire Spirit. Senator Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts,
00:06:37.080 posting to X at the time, quote, I've warned for months that a JetBlue-Spirit Airlines merger
00:06:42.300 would have led to fewer flights and higher fares. This is a Biden win for flyers. Totally. A huge
00:06:49.360 boon for the consumer, assuming, of course, that Chief Lieselot had some plan up her sleeve to
00:06:55.520 solve Spirits' $500 billion losses two years in a row by that point, which made a merger appear
00:07:02.980 kind of necessary. Because without a plan, Democrats were sealing the airline's fate.
00:07:09.600 Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent yesterday on Fox blaming the Biden administration for Spirits'
00:07:14.860 collapse. This is just more of the mess we inherited from the Biden administration.
00:07:19.360 In 2020, September 2022, Elizabeth Warren, who loves to write letters, sent a letter to the Justice Department, to the Labor, to the Transport Department, saying that they should oppose the merger with Spirit Airlines.
00:07:34.880 JetBlue wanted to buy them for three point eight billion dollars.
00:07:38.400 It would have given them much more resiliency. 0.55
00:07:41.100 And she and the Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is probably the worst transportation secretary in history when he came to the office.
00:07:50.740 They also they were against the merger.
00:07:53.760 And if JetBlue had merged with Spirit, we would have all these jobs that were lost yesterday.
00:08:00.900 We had 30 airport, 30 regional airports who have lost service.
00:08:04.840 but the reason we were here was because the merger, the Biden administration opposed the
00:08:11.080 merger. We shouldn't have been here in the first place. Spirit Airlines representatives in the
00:08:15.560 statement announcing its closure, writing, quote, despite the company's efforts, the recent material
00:08:20.400 increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit's
00:08:26.320 financial outlook. With no additional funding available to the company, Spirit had no choice
00:08:31.560 but to begin this wind down. Secretary Duffy speaking to reporters on Saturday,
00:08:36.720 disputing claims that rising oil prices are to blame for the closure.
00:08:40.960 Once the merger was denied in 2024, Spirit filed for bankruptcy immediately after the denial.
00:08:50.480 And then last August, Spirit again filed for bankruptcy. So Spirit was in dire straits long
00:08:57.820 before the war with Iran. Multiple times they had filed for bankruptcy. Their model wasn't working.
00:09:03.620 They couldn't get to fiscal health. So this was not the impetus. The war was not the impetus for
00:09:09.720 Spirit. It is true, however, that the Iran war is causing airline costs to soar. Axios reporting
00:09:16.260 just days ago that, quote, global jet fuel prices are skyrocketing and supply is dwindling due to
00:09:22.860 the Iran war. Spirit Airlines has suffered, as have several other carriers in Europe,
00:09:28.220 the Mideast, and domestically. American Airlines, for example, has announced that the soaring price
00:09:33.160 of jet fuel will cost it another $4 billion this year, wiping out its forecast profits,
00:09:39.900 reports The Guardian. In the days leading up to Spirit's collapse, the Trump administration
00:09:44.720 considering a possible $500 million bailout for Spirit. Secretary Duffy saying, however,
00:09:50.720 quote, there was a significant effort by President Trump in the administration to make it happen,
00:09:55.520 but in the end, a deal could not be reached. President Trump on Sunday afternoon announcing
00:10:01.800 the U.S. will begin guiding ships through the Strait of Hormuz amid the war with Iran. Mr.
00:10:07.920 Trump writing on True Social, quote, countries from all over the world have asked the United
00:10:12.380 States if we could help free up their ships, which are locked up in the Strait of Hormuz on
00:10:17.240 something which they have absolutely nothing to do with. The Post continuing, quote,
00:10:21.780 we have told these countries that we will guide their ships safely out of these restricted
00:10:25.600 waterways so that they can freely and ably get on with their business. The effort, dubbed Project
00:10:31.560 Freedom, expected to begin Monday morning local time. It will instruct U.S.-flagged ships and
00:10:37.260 others how to safely navigate passages of the strait, which has been closed by Iran,
00:10:42.680 according to The Wall Street Journal, the outlet describing Project Freedom as a joint effort
00:10:47.380 between the State Department and U.S. Central Command. The president warning any interference
00:10:52.400 with this process will be dealt with forcefully. Over the weekend, President Trump receiving a
00:10:57.220 14-point peace plan from the Iranians, that plan reportedly calling on the U.S. to withdraw from
00:11:03.240 areas near the Iranian border, end the naval blockade of Iranian ports, and cease all hostilities,
00:11:09.960 including Israel's campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon. An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman
00:11:16.000 telling state media this plan did not include nuclear negotiations. President Trump yesterday
00:11:21.580 morning telling reporter Nathan Guttman, correspondent for the Israeli Public
00:11:25.920 Broadcasting Corporation based in D.C., the latest deal is not acceptable. However,
00:11:31.020 discussions with Iran remain ongoing. Despite rejecting the latest proposal,
00:11:35.260 President Trump characterizing the talks as, quote, very positive. At home, more than two
00:11:40.420 months into this conflict, gas prices reaching new highs. AAA reporting the national average
00:11:46.320 is at $4.45 now per gallon, a $1.28 increase from this time last year. It was $5.09 a gallon
00:11:56.100 in our neighborhood this weekend for unleaded regular. With midterms just six months away,
00:12:01.400 it's not only gas prices, but President Trump's poll numbers that are moving in the wrong
00:12:05.700 direction. A new poll from The Washington Post, ABC, and Ipsos finding that 66% of Americans
00:12:12.720 disapprove of how the president is handling this war. Mr. Trump's overall disapproval rating is
00:12:18.640 also at a new high. 62% of adults say they disapprove, compared to 37% who say they approve.
00:12:25.920 Among Republicans, who make up about 29% of the electorate, President Trump holding steady with an 85% approval rating, support among Republican-leaning independents dropping to a new low, however, of 56%. His approval rating among all independents, 25%.
00:12:45.820 Coming up, U.S. Senate candidate from Michigan Democrat Mallory McMorrow responding to resurfaced
00:12:53.660 social media posts and some questions about her voting history. And a stunning Kentucky
00:12:59.880 Derby finish, a victory for the record books. Paying 70, 80, 90 bucks a month to big wireless
00:13:14.340 for unlimited data is insane,
00:13:17.000 especially when Pure Talk
00:13:18.360 is going to give you unlimited high-speed data
00:13:20.940 for just $34.99 a month.
00:13:23.620 Unlimited high-speed data at Pure Talk
00:13:25.900 used to start at 55 bucks a month,

00:13:31.940 you can now get unlimited high-speed data

00:14:16.600 U.S. Senate Democrat primary candidate in Michigan, Mallory McMorrow, responding to
00:14:21.800 resurfaced social media posts, making fun of the state she hopes to represent,
00:14:26.720 and new questions now surfacing regarding her voting history. McMorrow, currently serving as
00:14:32.500 Michigan's state Senate majority whip, is running in a competitive primary ahead of what's expected
00:14:37.660 to be a closely-watched general election, as Democrats target key seats in their bid to take
00:14:43.080 control of the U.S. Senate. CNN reporting last week that McMorrow, who moved to Michigan from
00:14:49.100 California in 2014, deleted about 6,000 old tweets, some of which mock rural Midwesterners
00:14:56.980 and lament leaving California. Others admit to McMorrow still voting in California elections
00:15:03.120 even after she moved to Michigan.
00:15:05.760 The account wiped following a New York Post report last year
00:15:08.900 on McMorrow's tweets dating back to the 2016 election.
00:15:12.500 In one example, McMorrow affirming a post from someone else,
00:15:16.100 suggesting that it's not the elites,
00:15:18.480 but white working-class voters
00:15:20.340 who are out of touch with the rest of the country
00:15:22.860 and who need to reach outside of their comfort zone.
00:15:26.740 McMorrow also adding to the thread,
00:15:28.800 empathy should go both ways,
00:15:30.500 but Trump's base fears what they've never seen.
00:15:34.440 It's the Trump base that fears the coastal elites,
00:15:37.620 not the other way around, in McMurray's view.
00:15:40.600 CNN reporting the now-deleted posts containing, quote,
00:15:43.440 a range of progressive views,
00:15:45.240 from contemplating a future without cars
00:15:47.660 to supporting the Black Lives Matter movement
00:15:50.080 to comparing President Donald Trump and his supporters to Nazis.
00:15:54.420 In the wake of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia's 2016 death,
00:15:58.840 McMurray posting, quote,
00:16:00.500 thoughts after Scalia on life. Never be the type of person that makes people cheer when you're dead.
00:16:07.460 One day prior to the official certification of President Trump's 2016 election victory,
00:16:12.380 McMurray posting, quote, there are days like these that make me miss California even more.
00:16:17.380 The 2016 election marking the first time a Republican had won Michigan since 1988.
00:16:23.680 McMurray on CNN yesterday saying the deleted tweets are proof of just how authentic she is.
00:16:29.640 I think the bigger liability is somebody who's been so concerned that one day they might run for office that everything about them is manufactured.
00:16:38.940 And if that is what you're looking for, there are two other opponents in this race who fit that bill.
00:16:43.900 I am not somebody who wanted to be in office or wanted to be in Congress when I was in diapers.
00:16:49.660 I started my career as a car designer and then I worked in a very different career and wasn't thinking about it.
00:16:55.920 I tweeted normal things like a normal person and people are desperate for authenticity. So that
00:17:02.800 is what we need in November. CNN also reporting on possible discrepancies in McMurray's voting
00:17:08.700 record, noting that despite writing in her 2025 autobiography that she, quote, relocated permanently
00:17:15.000 to Michigan in 2014, she continued to describe herself on social media as a California resident
00:17:21.580 as late as July 2016.
00:17:24.640 McMurray's posts containing repeated references
00:17:26.920 to voting in California's June 2016 Democratic primary,
00:17:31.640 with public records showing she registered to vote in Michigan
00:17:34.160 in August 2016.
00:17:36.520 McMurray addressing these posts.
00:17:38.680 Of course, you're required to vote in the state you're a resident of,
00:17:41.640 so why would you be voting in California two years after moving to Michigan?
00:17:46.280 So we decided to move to Michigan in 2014.
00:17:49.920 I was still working in Southern California.
00:17:53.280 My then-boyfriend, now-husband, was working in Michigan. 0.94
00:17:56.580 Like a lot of millennials, moving takes time. 0.92
00:17:59.360 It was a two-year process to finally settle in Michigan,
00:18:03.400 and I registered to vote in Michigan in August of 2016
00:18:06.800 and voted in the general election in November that year.
00:18:09.640 But you wrote you relocated permanently in 2014,
00:18:12.580 and you also posted an Instagram post
00:18:15.120 that you had moved out of California,
00:18:16.720 and that was before the June 16th primary in that state.
00:18:20.560 Should you have voted in the 2016 primary in California?
00:18:24.040 We still had our place out in Southern California.
00:18:26.780 And as I mentioned, we had multiple jobs.
00:18:29.500 Moving is ugly.
00:18:30.280 I wish we could have just upped and moved in one fell swoop,
00:18:33.660 but that's not the case, just like it is for a lot of people.
00:18:36.380 CNN finding a series of posts from 2024
00:18:39.480 in which McMurro admonishes an ex-user
00:18:42.680 who says he is registered in Michigan
00:18:44.940 despite living in Los Angeles for work.
00:18:48.020 McMorrow writing, quote,
00:18:49.360 so you moved for work and live in California
00:18:51.800 but are registered somewhere you no longer live?
00:18:55.000 That's illegal.
00:18:56.640 Early voting begins July 6th,
00:18:58.700 the primary election set for August 4th.
00:19:01.500 The Real Clear Politics polling average
00:19:03.480 showing McMorrow in second right now
00:19:05.620 with 20.7 points,
00:19:07.940 slightly trailing Abdul El-Sayed,
00:19:10.820 who's averaging 23 points.
00:19:12.560 The winner likely to face former GOP Congressman Mike Rogers in the November general election.
00:19:42.560 over Renegade in a final time of 202.27 seconds. A thrilling finish at the Kentucky Derby on
00:19:51.960 Saturday. Golden tempo with jockey Jose Ortiz storming from last place to win as a 23-1 long
00:20:00.540 shot in a dramatic run at Churchill Downs. The victory marking a historic moment, trainer Cherie
00:20:07.420 DeVoe becoming the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby and just the second to win
00:20:12.280 any Triple Crown race. DeVoe on NBC reacting moments after the win.
00:20:18.000 I don't even have any words right now. I just can't. I'm just so, so, so happy for Golden
00:20:25.220 Tempo. Jose did a wonderful job, masterful job at getting him there. He's so far out of it.
00:20:30.900 And he has had so much faith in this horse. I want to say thank you to the team of St.
00:20:36.620 Elias and Phipps Stable for giving me the opportunity to be here. I'm glad that I could
00:20:41.380 be a representative of all women everywhere that we can do anything we set our minds to.
00:20:45.740 Finishing second, Renegade, a horse ridden by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. Irad is the brother of the
00:20:53.940 winner Jose Ortiz. The one-two finish marking the first brother duo to place first and second in
00:20:59.900 the derby. The two men sharing an emotional moment just past the finish line, grabbing each other by
00:21:05.560 the arm after the race in a celebration they've dreamed of for more than a decade. This 2015
00:21:12.160 interview with the New York Racing Association. I know you guys have accomplished so much in a
00:21:17.340 short period of time. If you had one major goal, one thing that you want to do more than anything
00:21:22.480 else in this game, what would it be? For me, it's win the Derby and, you know, that's my dream and
00:21:28.280 I hopefully I can do it. Jose, how about you? Kentucky Derby, of course, should be the greatest
00:21:35.220 goal in my career well i got a feeling we're gonna see that happen for both of you and maybe
00:21:40.840 one day you guys will sweep the card how about that thank you yeah hopefully winner jose ortiz
00:21:46.320 in a post-race press conference reflecting on competing against his brother well obviously he
00:21:51.920 wasn't i felt like he wasn't a closer on renegade a little uncomfortable position so i knew he was
00:21:57.160 gonna drop a little bit to the back uh but i also knew he's a very nice horse so i was expecting him
00:22:03.860 to run a very good race, maybe win it.
00:22:06.300 So it was one of my targets to follow, and I did.
00:22:11.660 I wasn't expecting it, but I was like, I could see it happening,
00:22:16.680 but I didn't know it was going to be second, you know.
00:22:18.760 I mean, it's good for him.
00:22:20.700 He runs second.
00:22:22.040 Like I said before, hopefully he gets the opportunity to win it one day,
00:22:25.360 but it wasn't today.
00:22:28.680 the win coming in jose's 11th try at the kentucky derby his first time taking home the trophy
00:22:36.680 golden tempo's team winning 3.1 million bucks in prize money with runner-up renegade earning
00:22:43.360 one million dollars back-to-back third place finishes in this horse's two most recent races
00:22:49.220 gave some pause on golden tempo who was bred by phipps stables and saint elias stables but no
00:22:55.920 one's doubting him now. If you bet $100 on this horse, you went home with $2,300 in profit. Not
00:23:04.180 bad. The Kentucky Derby marking the first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, followed
00:23:09.960 by the Preakness Stakes on May 16th, then the Belmont Stakes set for June 6th. A Triple Crown
00:23:15.720 sweep winning all races, the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont remaining one of the most difficult
00:23:20.780 achievements in sports, accomplished by only 13 horses in history. We will have an in-depth
00:23:27.440 report on this amazing story later today on the MK Show. And that'll do it for your AM update.
