00:00:00.000on the heels of the condo bailout the gordy howe bridge fiasco and the liberals completely
00:00:06.000surrendering to donald trump on the streaming tax in exchange for absolutely nothing prime minister
00:00:12.080mark carney has a new thorn in his side in the form of the 90 billion dollar alto high-speed
00:00:18.240rail project this is actually a lot like the condo bailout party with the relevant ministers
00:00:24.880flanking him on his left and right came out and did a big press conference about how proud he was
00:00:30.720about the money they were about to spend on this garbage and then it completely blew up in his face
00:00:35.440within days or weeks the alto train has been a bit more of a slow burn because on its surface they
00:00:41.760can pitch this as being in the public's interest people like this thing yes it costs an arm and a
00:00:47.440leg but don't worry this is somehow going to massively help our economy by building a train
00:00:53.200that nobody's going to ride obviously one of the big hits on the alto train is already the massive
00:01:00.080conflict of interest that the carny government has with alto our finance minister francois philippe
00:01:06.160champagne's partner became the vice president of environment for alto two months before he was on
00:01:13.040the floor of the house fighting for 90 billion dollars for the train project and he even resisted
00:01:19.520having the funding for the train removed from the greater budget because he didn't want to have to
00:01:24.320argue for it on its own because he knew he would be in a conflict of interest arguing for it and
00:01:30.000so he basically just pork barreled this massive piece of infrastructure spending into the overall
00:01:36.320budget and refused to debate a debate it as an individual item but now we have a report that's
00:01:42.480come out from the federal government showing that the people who live on the train's route
00:01:48.240do not want this thing so that their last justification for this project is just gone
00:01:55.040they were thinking yes it costs a lot of money but it's really going to be a boon for the
00:01:59.200people who live in the area between toronto and quebec city no all those people say they're
00:02:05.280basically never going to ride it and they also have a problem with the cost just because you're
00:02:09.920spending it in their general vicinity doesn't mean they like the money so you can check out
00:02:15.840in this graphic this is what the proposed route currently is it's the green line since the blue
00:02:21.360one was shut down because it was cutting through a lot more farmland and rightfully farmers didn't
00:02:26.320want a high-speed rail line cutting their fields in half where you can't even cross the rail tracks
00:02:32.400like a normal train you have to find a tunnel underneath the train so you can pass underneath it
00:02:38.000which could be kilometers away from each other so naturally they didn't want it now we're going to
00:02:42.800to be going over the route that goes to Kingston. For some reason, maybe Mark Gerritsen is very
00:02:48.040happy about it. Who knows? But this is coming from an article from the Western Standard where
00:02:52.500the headline is, Federal research finds Canadians question $90 billion high-speed rail project
00:02:59.060despite living in proposed corridor. Now, a lot of their information comes from Blacklock's
00:03:04.920reporter. So credit to them, absolutely, for filing all these freedom of information requests
00:03:09.740that gets this information but I want to read a little bit of an excerpt from here and I will link
00:03:14.760the article in the description below as well if you want to read the full thing but this is kind
00:03:19.720of insane that we're going to apparently chug along with this project despite the fact that
00:03:25.960the people it's meant to serve do not like it like what are you left with in terms of your
00:03:31.200justification for this project other than yo my friends really want the money to build this train
00:03:36.620nowhere that's kind of it my wife my partner is a vp of environment here so we're gonna give them
00:03:43.820more money than some provinces run on in a given year i think this is more money than many of the
00:03:49.180large provinces have in their budgets every year but so but we're let's get into the article now
00:03:55.820internal federal research shows many canadians living along the proposed toronto to quebec
00:04:00.780city high-speed rail route believe ottawa's planned 90 billion project a 90 billion dollar project
00:04:07.020is too expensive and unnecessary despite acknowledging it could reduce travel times
00:04:13.340black locks reporter says the findings are contained in a privy council office focus group report
00:04:19.260that surveyed residents in the ottawa montreal corridor about the federal government signature
00:04:24.380rail project now remember that it's ottawa montreal so they surveyed like the most
00:04:29.980left-wing places along the corridor and they still don't like it it says here participants
00:04:37.660and this is a quote participants residing in the ottawa montreal corridor were asked questions
00:04:41.900related to the federal government's plan to develop high-speed rail in their region the
00:04:45.660report states researchers researchers found all participants were aware of the proposal
00:04:50.620to build a high-speed rail line linking toronto peterborough ottawa laval montreal
00:04:56.380Trois-Rivières and Quebec City. While respondents generally agree the project would make travel
00:05:01.920faster, many questioned whether it justified the cost. And now, people will highlight in the legacy
00:05:08.280media, well, they said it's going to speed up travel times, ergo it's still worth doing.
00:05:13.600The Concorde speeds up travel times in terms of air travel. Yes, if we all rode around on jet
00:05:19.700planes, we would get where we're going faster. That doesn't justify any amount of expense being
00:05:26.280done. Or else, in your own life, are you always going to try and buy a faster car? Are you always
00:05:31.860going to spend more money when you're traveling by air for the more expensive flight that gets
00:05:36.820you there faster? No, you're not. You're going to oftentimes balance speed and efficiency with how
00:05:43.880much it costs. But let's read on here. Quote, sharing their reactions, while participants
00:05:49.680believed this project would be helpful in making it faster to travel along the corridor from Toronto
00:05:54.300to Quebec City, a number were concerned about what they viewed as the high financial costs
00:05:59.860associated with the construction of a major transportation project, such as this, the report
00:06:05.040said. Participants also argued there were already several convenient ways to travel between Toronto
00:06:10.340and Quebec City, and suggesting Ottawa should focus more on pressing priorities. And this is
00:06:16.760another quote from the report, quote, among these participants, the view was expressed that there
00:06:22.260were already numerous ways to transit between toronto and quebec city relatively quickly with
00:06:27.140some feeling that they were likely other projects that represented more urgent priorities for the
00:06:32.100government of canada to be focused on the report says the privy council titled continuous qualitative
00:06:37.540data collection of canadians views is dated march 3rd only days after the house of commons passed
00:06:42.660the high-speed rail network act on february 26th and as you will know that was before it was revealed
00:06:49.780that francois philippe champagne the federal finance minister had a conflict with this project
00:06:55.060he did not recuse himself for that vote he has not recused himself for any votes on this matter it
00:07:00.660was only found out in april that the guy obviously had a personal stake in seeing the project go
00:07:06.500forward or else his partner's probably unemployed and by the way this project has already had 265
00:07:15.780million dollars spent on it that is how much has already been spent on just consultants musing in
00:07:21.300their offices doing surveys potentially like this federal report right here although this actually
00:07:26.580is from the government of canada may have nothing to do with the alto spending but people are being
00:07:31.460paid to survey people are being paid to just do you know qualitative and quantitative data
00:07:39.060collections of what people think about the project and other things they're never actually going to
00:07:43.540use any of this information to conclude we shouldn't build the train they're still going to
00:07:47.700do it but this is a great way of billing a lot of money while not actually having to do anything
00:07:52.820physical also this train that is supposedly going to cost 90 billion dollars which is already like
00:07:58.980multiple times what a high-speed rail line would cost in another country to build that's a low-end
00:08:05.060estimate the bloc quebecois hardly a fiscally conservative party put out their own report
00:08:11.220estimating that this thing based on other project cost overruns and time like and and like extra
00:08:17.820time they need to build it and things that they don't suspect were going to cost as much this
00:08:22.540thing could end up costing up to 200 billion dollars more money than many countries gdps
00:08:30.260combined like what are we doing here it's going to be a train that's going to have like a fifth
00:08:36.560that the car is full no one's going to ride this thing because how often are you going between
00:08:42.160toronto and ottawa if you live in that part of canada or toronto to quebec city no doubt there
00:08:47.200are people who do that they're probably pretty comfortable with flying at this point and if
00:08:51.640you're going between toronto and kingston you should probably just take a car like what are
00:08:56.900you you're going to take a train to toronto and then uber everywhere like if you're going from
00:09:01.220kingston toronto you're probably just gonna bring your vehicle because it's easier so and but it's
00:09:05.980just being justified the idea that oh my goodness it reduces emissions and also it makes travel
00:09:11.500cheaper and faster when they say faster we're saying a five-hour drive is now a three-hour
00:09:17.800train ride or two and a half hour train ride but you have to get to the train station you have to
00:09:23.140park your car or you have to uber your way there or have someone drop you off and then what you
00:09:27.900can bring with you is obviously far more limited than even if you had a small sedan but anyways
00:09:34.160maybe I just don't understand the genius of this project. That's why the liberals have completely
00:09:39.040stopped talking about it. Again, in government, if you are proud of something, you talk about it
00:09:44.360constantly. You never drop it. You just keep squeezing that rock until you get all the juice
00:09:50.920out of it. This thing was basically dead after April. Once the conflict of interest scandal broke
00:09:56.360and it's continued and Francois Philippe Champagne has been trying to, you know, save his reputation
00:10:01.880as best as possible they have not spoken a word about the thing because it's obviously politically
00:10:06.780toxic to them just like the condo bailout that carney proudly announced we're going to give
00:10:12.0603.2 billion dollars to vancouver and burnaby area developers to pay for some unoccupied condos
00:10:19.040he thought that that was political like he thought that was great it was going to go over really well
00:10:25.200that's why he brought out provincial officials federal officials and he stood proudly saying
00:10:31.060that we're going to intervene in the Vancouver real estate market to save it, save prices from
00:10:36.280going down, which is absolutely delusional and one of the most expensive places to live on the
00:10:41.120planet. But now I want to jump over to a video that conservative MP Jamil Giovanni sort of
00:10:47.200tangentially made on this topic. I thought he did a really good sort of attack on both Mark Carney
00:10:53.280and Doug Ford for backing these just bloated projects in their jurisdictions. Mark Carney
00:10:59.460and Doug Ford are at it again. These guys are doing political deals to help each other out
00:11:07.660and they're using your tax dollars to pay for it. Now we've got just the latest example of this
00:11:14.820today because we learned that Carney and Ford had some kind of informal agreement
00:11:21.080as it relates to the Alto train and Billy Bishop airport and it's all politics. Ford promised
00:11:29.380that he would not talk about how the alto train is a huge waste of 90 billion dollars of taxpayer
00:11:35.580money. And Carney promised that he would have the Billy Bishop expansion in downtown Toronto
00:11:42.400approved by the federal government. Well, Carney did what liberals tend to do and he broke his
00:11:50.880promise. So now the airport expansion is off and I guess the deal is off because these details
00:11:58.800are now coming to light so i mean doesn't it i know he screams great project to me
00:12:08.580when you have to have like a gun to your head deal with another level of government saying
00:12:14.300you better not say that my project is a complete waste of money and if you do that i might approve
00:12:20.360the uh the uh the island airport expansion in the like in the what is it uh ontario lake ontario or
00:12:28.520whatever. I don't live in Toronto. So obviously, I don't know as much about the Billy Bishop
00:12:32.980Airport. But my goodness, like, this is how projects are done. We're just both people know
00:12:39.740they're lying and wasting taxpayer money. But we have a deal here to not say that to anybody.
00:12:46.020And you know, it's not going to hurt anyone. Well, yeah, it's going to cost $150 billion to build a
00:12:51.520stupid train. And it's also like, I actually don't mind the idea of the Billy Bishop Airport. It's0.99
00:12:57.060fine i'm not exempt against it in any way but if really the only way that doug ford was going to
00:13:02.460get that thing done was getting a bunch of federal dollars and have and basically not complaining
00:13:07.500about the alto train that's in fact hurting many of his voters yes we're we're screwing each other
00:13:13.840over but we're doing it because i guess we we get something out of it it's like okay what a what
00:13:19.420what an experience living in canada is this point like how do you believe anything these guys are
00:13:25.180saying it's obvious that they are looking out for themselves they're not looking out for you
00:13:29.940and it's also obvious that they will just say and do whatever it takes to have political power
00:13:37.940they don't really care that under their watch your quality of life is going down while your tax bill
00:13:44.440is going up so you know i mean the media should want to talk about this there's been some reporting
00:13:54.200on it i would love to say that carney and ford will be forced to answer questions about this
00:14:01.000every day but i'm not expecting that because there are not a lot of truth tellers in canadian media
00:14:08.960just like they're not and you can get the legacy media to report on something properly
00:14:13.940uh but as jamil's kind of inferring here and implying they need to be dragged kicked and
00:14:20.000pulled into covering a story. The Gordie Howe bridge was really only covered with the ferocity
00:14:25.340it was because he lied to the legacy media. And that is one of the only ways liberals can really
00:14:30.340get the media on their case is if they lied to you. And then you look stupid as CTV news when he1.00
00:14:36.780told you that the Gordie Howe bridge deal was like the opposite of what it actually was. But if he0.99
00:14:42.980actually didn't lie about it and the Gordie Howe bridge deal was like obviously an embarrassment,
00:14:47.880But as long as he didn't tell the media one thing when the truth was the opposite, they would have helped him bury it.
00:14:54.240And they would have been writing up editorials about how, no, no, no, Carney needed to do this or the train or the bridge would have never opened.
00:15:00.840And in fact, this is very savvy negotiating by our prime minister, you know, constantly making concessions to get either back to a trade negotiating table and not actually getting anything exchanged or simply getting a bridge open that we paid for 100 percent.
00:15:16.720So the conservatives, people like Jamil Javani, they really need to be calling press conferences on the Alto train and saying, hey, so we've run through pretty much every justification for this project.
00:15:28.200And now we're down to the liberals' friends really want it because it allows them to get big contracts for construction and for consulting.
00:15:39.580That's really all we're at because it's not an efficient project.
00:15:57.360Even the speed of transportation, really?
00:16:00.620We're going to spend $90 billion so that to go from Toronto to Quebec City, it's going to be like 35% faster.
00:16:07.940Yeah, that trip we all take every weekend, it's going to be 35% faster.
00:16:11.840If that was true and it was just the biggest traveling corridor in all of Canada, Toronto to Quebec City, that's where everyone's going, Toronto to Trois-Rivières, maybe, even then it costs too much.
00:16:24.580So we're literally just down to, well, we don't want to get rid of it or else Francois Philippe Champagne's partner isn't going to have a job.
