00:00:00.000 Hypothetically, if I was a strategy advisor to the Mark Carney Liberals, the first thing I would tell them to do is stop shooting yourselves in the foot.
00:00:11.340 Now, I'm a conservative who doesn't like the Carney Liberals at all.
00:00:15.340 At the same time, I like things to make sense, and it's maddening watching the Carney Liberals not be able to pick a lane on the trade issue.
00:00:24.740 Do you guys want to go rhetorically elbows up and tell the Americans to go screw themselves?
00:00:30.560 Or do you want to make concessions for absolutely nothing in return?
00:00:35.640 They're not even picking one of two plausibly good lanes to take in politics. 0.99
00:00:41.620 Now, I think this elbows up strategy is stupid when it comes to actually getting a deal. 0.95
00:00:46.800 But politically, it's good for the liberals to be constantly in these rhetorical fights with Donald Trump. 0.99
00:00:51.960 It does boost their support.
00:00:53.260 But they're not picking between that and a more realistic trade strategy of horse trading certain things to get benefits back from the United States.
00:01:02.260 Hey, we'll give you supply management, we'll get rid of that, but you have to get rid of the tariffs on softwood.
00:01:07.380 That's not what the liberals are doing.
00:01:08.900 They're just simply throwing in the towel, throwing up the white flag on tons of different issues for absolutely nothing in return.
00:01:16.780 And again, they're not consistent about it.
00:01:18.800 It goes elbows-up rhetoric, and then it goes to making concessions.
00:01:24.800 And that is what brings us to a press conference I need to show you today
00:01:28.780 where a liberal minister was launching a trade diversification office in the federal government
00:01:35.220 because we do not have enough bureaucracy, apparently.
00:01:38.360 And when it went to media questions, it did not go very well for him
00:01:42.440 because journalists, I don't even think they really knew what they were doing,
00:01:46.260 were sort of kind of, you know, starting to circle the drain of, you guys make absolutely
00:01:52.680 no sense. What is your actual trade strategy? So check this out.
00:01:58.680 Good morning, Minister. This is Neha from CBC News. Last week, the Prime Minister said everything
00:02:04.640 is on the table in negotiations with the US. And this week, he said energy is off the table.
00:02:10.920 Is Canada hurting its bargaining ability by saying what it won't leverage?
00:02:14.940 Now, he absolutely chokes on this answer, but I want to give you a little bit of background before I get to him answering that question.
00:02:22.480 So it was just yesterday that Prime Minister Mark Carney was at a press conference with Alberta Premier Daniel Smith, where he acknowledged that Canada cannot use our oil and gas resources as leverage against the United States.
00:02:35.560 It is literally impossible to turn off the taps to the United States in terms of oil and gas exports.
00:02:41.540 This is what happened in Iran during the war. When you're producing oil and gas products and it has nowhere to go, you can't just simply turn it off. It could basically destroy your oil and gas infrastructure forever. It's basically pretty much a constant flow. There's not much time you can turn it off for before the infrastructure starts getting harmed. So the oil and gas products have to go somewhere or be stockpiled, and we don't exactly have the resources to stockpile in that manner.
00:03:07.760 And also there is the rub of federalism where, especially on natural resources, which the provinces have jurisdiction over, the federal government can't just come in and say, Alberta, you're going to stop shipping to the United States.
00:03:21.420 But that absolutely ruined like the only pitch Carney had left last week when he said that we're going to use our leverage on certain products in order to somehow get the United States to the table.
00:03:34.380 They're trying to get us to the table, but we're pretending somehow we need to get them to the table.
00:03:39.060 And that was one of the big pitches with people like Premier Doug Ford and David Eby,
00:03:43.400 is that how about we just shut off the taps of the U.S.?
00:03:46.740 Not possible, and it probably wouldn't even be helpful because it would end up doing more damage to us than it would do to them.
00:03:54.780 And that's what set us up into this question.
00:03:57.580 So what is the strategy here?
00:04:00.320 She was just basically saying if it's a bad idea to tell the U.S. what we're willing and not willing to do, the U.S. probably already knew we couldn't even possibly do that. 0.68
00:04:09.820 It would be a dumb idea. But really, the question underlying what she asked is, what is even the strategy here at all?
00:04:18.100 And let's listen to Minister Sidhu absolutely whiffing this one.
00:04:21.940 No, it's a very good question. I mean, you mentioned the U.S. It's a very important partner to industry groups, including many on the council.
00:04:28.200 they will always be an important partner to Canada in terms of trade but as we
00:04:32.340 work through this negotiation I think it's prudent that we don't negotiate
00:04:35.280 through media Canada has many cards to play and will continue to negotiate at
00:04:39.000 the table led by Minister LeBlanc and the US team at the same time my focus is
00:04:43.320 diversification to expand into new markets around the world sign you free
00:04:46.860 trade agreements or businesses and have preferential access and so the focus is
00:04:50.560 yes of course the US is important but also the rest of the world we need to
00:04:53.520 focus on that as well and you can you can tell from the business world if you
00:04:56.880 one customer buying your product they will set the price but if we're able to open up the market and
00:05:01.200 have more customers that gives our industry a competitive advantage um my follow-up question
00:05:07.120 how concerned are you that removing the possibility of attacks on streamers at this time is going to
00:05:12.960 be used against your party in the by elections particularly in quebec so he basically didn't
00:05:19.680 answer that previous question just skipping over it oh well you know we don't want to put our cards
00:05:24.560 on the table and we don't want to negotiate this thing out in the media at the same time the
00:05:29.700 liberals keep doing that and then she follows up by saying okay well if we have cards to play why
00:05:34.500 did we just burn another card because not only have the liberals canceled the tripling of the
00:05:39.240 streaming tax but now they've just completely eliminated the streaming tax that mostly only
00:05:45.000 applied to u.s businesses now i never liked the streaming tax in the first place but it's
00:05:49.460 contradictory to say that we have a lot of cards and we don't want to negotiate this thing out from
00:05:53.320 the media. At the same time, we keep publicly burning cards left and right on getting rid of
00:05:58.740 the streaming tax and backing off on the Gordie Howe Bridge deal and then saying that we're not
00:06:03.700 actually going to leverage energy resources in order to get the U.S. to the table. And then
00:06:08.280 Mark Carney, it won't even back the booze ban that Ontario and New Brunswick and Manitoba and
00:06:15.200 B.C. have on U.S. alcoholic products. Like, what is the actual strategy here at all? You can keep
00:06:21.760 saying well we shouldn't do this in the public at some point you should because nobody even the
00:06:26.800 americans have any clue what you're doing so they're just sitting around waiting for you to
00:06:30.420 continue making concessions as you buy yourself time to avoid having an actual in-person face-to-face
00:06:37.320 negotiation with donald trump where there's a lot of sensitivity oh and by the way she's right here
00:06:42.680 getting rid of the streaming tax dumb move politically for the liberals now i don't like
00:06:47.400 the streaming tax, but that's because conservatives tend to not like the streaming tax because
00:06:51.900 we don't like taxes. We don't like unnecessary prices on products from the government to,
00:06:58.220 you know, subsidize bad CBC productions. But there's currently a by-election in the riding
00:07:04.740 of Chikutini-Lithjord that the liberals wanted to try and win away from the conservatives.
00:07:10.380 Now, that's a three-way split riding. Conservatives, Bloc, and liberals all have a chance to win it,
00:07:15.320 And the liberals are just shooting themselves in the foot in a way that will benefit both conservatives and the Bloc Quebecois. It will benefit conservatives because the liberals keep looking super weak on trade, and the conservatives are pitching themselves as the alternative, more realistic party when it comes to their trade strategy.
00:07:32.100 And the Bloc always run as the Quebec Nationalists, and they can hit the Liberals for, you know, giving this up and looking weak in front of Donald Trump.
00:07:41.080 Basically, it benefits both the Conservatives and the Bloc.
00:07:44.920 Bloc just go after the Liberals for being weak.
00:07:47.180 Conservatives go after the Liberals for making concession in favor of absolutely nothing in return. 0.62
00:07:52.700 Toward protecting local art and culture.
00:07:55.200 Yeah, I mean, look, when you look at that, the Minister of Heritage is leading that conversation.
00:07:58.440 But what I can say is that we don't want to add to the affordability of Canadians, what they're dealing with day to day.
00:08:05.220 That increases costs.
00:08:06.280 And so the prime minister was very clear yesterday that this helps bring down costs for Canadians.
00:08:10.080 And we'll continue to collaborate and have those conversations.
00:08:12.840 I love that liberals have suddenly found out that taxes raise prices on things because previously, no, no, no.
00:08:18.900 It's a tax on just industry.
00:08:20.940 It's a tax just on big polluters. 1.00
00:08:22.440 polluters. And also they're realizing that pipelines help you export things because now
00:08:27.780 they're pitching the idea that, don't worry, we're diversifying where we send our energy to
00:08:31.620 by building pipelines. I thought previously it wasn't worth the damage to the climate to build
00:08:36.860 pipelines and that our oil and gas industry was doing completely fine without it. So many lessons,
00:08:42.800 so many basic economic lessons are being learned by the liberals here. At the same time, they're
00:08:47.200 still not implementing any of it properly. Every time they remove a tax, always look somewhere
00:08:52.820 else where they're going to increase the tax or just print a bunch of money and inflate the
00:08:57.340 currency, which is probably what's going to happen with the streaming tax. They're not going to cut
00:09:01.500 the subsidies to the CBC and to other legacy media productions. They're just going to find the money
00:09:07.240 elsewhere. Hi there, Mark Randall with Globe and Mail. I'm wondering if you can kind of explain
00:09:12.960 what this Export, Strategic Export Council or Office rather actually is? I mean, you guys
00:09:18.240 have EDC, you already have the Trade Commissioner Service, you have the Canadian Commercial
00:09:22.680 Corporation, all which facilitate deals, do financing, arrange that. What is new about
00:09:29.640 what's being announced today and how is it going to work with the existing arms of trade
00:09:34.500 promotion that the government already has?
00:09:36.840 So this person effectively just asked, Minister, what is it to do? What's the point
00:09:42.420 this new trade diversification office what are we getting from it that we didn't have before
00:09:47.540 and the fact that this minister was the guy who just announced it you think he'd have a good pitch
00:09:53.460 for it since he in theory just made the pitch although the pitch was so bad that the journalists
00:09:57.940 decided to ask them what this was even about and how this is different from what the minister of
00:10:02.500 trade would already be doing anyways within his office and this is his answer that's a very fair
00:10:07.540 question i mean look when i when we formed office and when i got this role uh and i consulted with
00:10:12.660 industry with boards of trade um with commerce organizations across the country uh they were
00:10:17.220 telling me that we're losing out on business uh because we're not as coordinated as other countries
00:10:21.220 uh they would get to the finish line another uh state leader would swoop in a trade minister would
00:10:26.180 swoop in make a call and billions of dollars of deals would be lost and so better coordination
00:10:30.340 is what's required? No, not at all. Coordination is not why Canadian firms are losing out on
00:10:38.400 export contracts with other countries. They are losing out. They are losing out on those markets
00:10:43.360 because it sucks to produce things in Canada. If another trade minister can just make a call and
00:10:49.680 get it to happen within the day, it doesn't sound like they have a trade diverse education office. 0.54
00:10:54.220 It just sounds like they're cutting you out because they have a better pitch. We don't need 1.00
00:10:58.760 a new bureaucracy to coordinate trying to find new markets for canadian businesses no what we need
00:11:06.440 is lower corporate taxes and then maybe also reducing regulations that's all we need the
00:11:15.160 liberals as many economic lessons as they're learning today when it comes to pipelines being
00:11:19.640 good and you know maybe taxes do increase the cost of things maybe they should extend that lesson
00:11:26.120 that they learned that the cost on things can hurt both people's personal finances as well as
00:11:31.720 companies finances and reduce corporate taxes so that more places will want the cheaper canadian
00:11:37.720 goods because right now our goods are more expensive because we have higher taxes and no
00:11:43.960 bureaucracy is going to be able to pitch to a country that they don't forget the dollars and
00:11:49.320 Forget the fact that, you know, the United Kingdom or Argentina or Chile or Mexico or Nigeria or whatever other country produces this faster and cheaper than Canada.
00:12:01.140 Just use us because we have a fancy trade diversification office.
00:12:05.600 Do you want a cappuccino?
00:12:06.640 Our trade diversification office has its very own cappuccino machine.
00:12:10.860 It's nonsense. 0.99
00:12:12.600 It's just dumb spending. 0.98
00:12:14.480 So whenever you see, oh, the liberals are cutting civil service jobs and it seems somewhat conservative, no, they're not somewhat conservative. 0.89
00:12:22.540 They're just basically reducing the size of some areas of government by incentivizing people to retire earlier, not replacing people as they retire.
00:12:30.980 And then they're still hiring new people in other made-up departments that are going to be highly paid for absolutely no productive work.
00:12:39.940 In a year, I'd love to know how many new trade deals, how many new business opportunities were created for Canadian companies by the Trade Diversification Office that would have not been made if it wasn't for them.
00:12:54.600 No doubt the Liberals will claim like every single new opportunity is because of the office, but new opportunities happen without the office existing.
00:13:01.040 So how many more did we get than we usually do?
00:13:04.900 I would assume it's going to be about zero.
00:13:07.820 is what industries have asked for.
00:13:10.060 Yes, we were coordinated, but we need to be better coordinated
00:13:12.460 in terms of breaking down those silos.
00:13:14.300 So in this office, we'll have diplomatic experience,
00:13:16.880 we'll have financing experience from EDC,
00:13:18.820 but we'll also have business backing from the industries.
00:13:21.260 And so if you look at the Strategic Advisory Council,
00:13:23.740 it involves CEOs from Canada's largest companies
00:13:26.360 who are willing to do more around the world.
00:13:29.080 And so when you look at this office,
00:13:30.800 it'll help break down those silos,
00:13:32.360 help coordinate in terms of diplomatic advocacy,
00:13:35.100 which we've been doing.
00:13:35.800 now this formalizes so we can accelerate even more so this brings together oh it formalizes
00:13:40.520 guys oh i guarantee we're going to just be like just awash in new investments because we're cool
00:13:46.440 we're so formalized they'll be like in they'll be in the trade diversification office and they'll
00:13:51.560 just be sitting there in the nice chairs they'll be like oh my goodness this is so formalized why
00:13:57.320 aren't we putting all of our money in with canada do you can you feel this chair can you can you
00:14:02.440 taste this cappuccino this whole this whole thing feels formalized are canadian companies not
00:14:08.680 producing the goods and services at the same price as other countries is it more expensive
00:14:14.280 well yeah but this feels so this process feels so formalized it's like oh this is the most liberal
00:14:20.600 thing ever it's like almost as on brand for the carny liberals as him saying catalyze but now i
00:14:28.280 I just want to take you guys to this clip from a committee meeting the other day where Harb Gill
00:14:33.580 gave a fantastic speech, I thought, on basically the Liberals throwing in the towel. So we just
00:14:40.720 got away from the Liberals trying to repair their trade strategy and pretend that somehow, you know,
00:14:47.200 hey, no, no, we still got it, guys. Look at us setting up a new trade diversification office.
00:14:51.320 We're going elbows up. We're going to solve the trade problem. They're not. And now we have the
00:14:57.040 conservatives kind of rebuttaling back at just what the record has been so far in case you've
00:15:01.900 forgotten. And I thought this was very, very well written both to Harb Gill and his staff. I thought
00:15:07.180 this was probably the best takedown I've heard from an MP on the issue so far, maybe in line
00:15:13.440 with how well that Chivaloy Majumdar has been doing. And so I want to understand the strategy
00:15:18.240 here. Maybe there is one. Explain it. Because right now it looks like this. Washington applies
00:15:24.620 pressure? Ottawa caves. Ottawa announces that as being progress. Washington comes back with another
00:15:32.460 demand. Ottawa makes another concession. And then the Prime Minister tells Canadians we are stronger
00:15:38.940 somehow. And I asked stronger how? Fewer tariffs? No. More certainty? Not really. Better access to
00:15:48.380 the u.s market no more security for the auto sector no more investment sadly no a more secure
00:15:56.460 kuzma you must be kidding just give me one of those things that i can bring back home and tell
00:16:04.060 my people this is what we got this is what your canadian government got for you because right now
00:16:08.940 this government's negotiating posture reminds me of a cheap lawn chair looks dirty sitting there
00:16:15.100 then somebody puts a little pressure on it and it falls immediately there goes into the leg and
00:16:20.940 somehow the press release the following day says the chair is stronger than ever nope it's lying
00:16:27.580 in the grass chair i don't want canada fighting with the people of the united states there are
00:16:32.700 neighbors there are friends they are family they are our biggest customer i want this government
00:16:38.860 to succeed with them let's face it the americans show up looking for american interests we should
00:16:46.540 go out there looking for our interests and for our workers and our families not somebody else's
00:16:52.860 our job is to look after our folks not after the first threat not after the second concession
00:17:01.740 every single time chair so let's make this very simple since this prime minister took office
00:17:07.500 What did Canada give up? What did America give up? And what did Canada get? And if we're really
00:17:13.740 stronger today, just show us. That's all. Nothing to it. Walk us through it and we'll be happy with
00:17:21.580 that explanation. That's what I'm looking for here. Thank you. I usually don't play entire clips all
00:17:27.100 the way through without pausing, but that was just extremely well written, extremely well delivered by
00:17:33.500 harb gill for windsor west also a fantastic riding for the conservatives to be occupying that's one
00:17:38.380 of the writings that hadn't been won by the conservatives one of them hadn't been one since
00:17:43.580 like the 1950s and the other hadn't been one since the 1930s i believe he actually occupies the one
00:17:49.580 that had never gone conservative and since like like early great depression like 1934 or something
00:17:56.780 like that. But now we need to jump over to what happened after that speech. The liberals weren't
00:18:03.360 really liking all the questions being asked about the Gorey Howe bridge because that's effectively
00:18:07.360 what the committee was called to do was be able to investigate the Gorey Howe bridge deal that
00:18:14.260 Mark Carney failed to make properly with Donald Trump, gave up a bunch of stuff in favor of
00:18:19.120 nothing. And the liberals not wanting to actually defend the deal that Mark Carney calls good just
00:18:26.120 decided to literally shut down the committee. So given that, Mr. Chair, I'd
00:18:33.200 like to propose that we adjourn the meeting. Thank you. Motion to adjourn.
00:18:41.800 We'll take a vote. Mr. Danko? Mr. Gasparra? Yeah, we went all the way through and they all voted to
00:18:53.600 shut down the committee meeting because because again for some reason the liberals don't want to
00:18:58.160 defend their great deal if it's such a great deal you should relish the opportunity to dunk on the
00:19:03.920 conservatives for questioning you you should be you should be absolutely ecstatic that the
00:19:09.440 conservatives want to attack you on something that was so good because they'll look like a bunch of 0.94
00:19:13.760 naysaying jerks if they do so that's the thing with opposition you can't just simply oppose 0.97
00:19:20.080 everything you have to oppose when it makes sense to a member of the general public so even sometimes 0.98
00:19:25.520 it doesn't make sense to push back and you have to play ball a little bit but the conservatives
00:19:30.480 are hammering on this thing because it's absolutely a great opportunity and the liberals are running
00:19:34.400 away from it because they know it makes them look bad which again gets me back to if i was an advisor
00:19:40.480 to the liberals why do you guys keep making concessions for no reason why we're now conceding
00:19:47.920 that we're actually going to use any of our resources to get leverage on the americans yes
00:19:51.600 dumb idea but we're not even we we didn't even rhetorically stand by that for an entire week
00:19:56.400 and then we just completely canceled the netflix tax we had the gordie howe bridge deal we had the 0.78
00:20:00.960 dst we've had lots and lots of things and we've gotten absolutely nothing in return and as harb
00:20:07.120 gill said every day we wake up hearing that things are better than ever at the same time
00:20:12.800 Clearly, they're not. And this is why we have in that recent Angus Reid poll, the liberal lead has
00:20:18.660 shrunk to just being four points above the conservatives. Guys, whenever you see the media
00:20:23.740 starting to pivot over to attacking Pierre Polyev again, it's because things are not going well for
00:20:30.160 Mark Carney. That's why we see people like Corey tonight coming out of the woodwork to try and
00:20:35.140 slap at Pierre Polyev. It's not because Pierre Polyev is doing badly. It's because the conservatives
00:20:41.600 can win, but Corey Tanike wants it to be his client that ends up becoming prime minister,
00:20:46.440 not Mark Carney. So you have to check out this one post I made. I just need to do it because
00:20:51.640 Corey Tanike went on David Hurley's podcast the other day, his Curse of Politics podcast that
00:20:58.260 usually a bunch of hacky liberal strategists all talking to each other. And he went on with this
00:21:05.560 hat. I don't know why. We have a bit of a theme today. If I was the fashion advisor to Corey
00:21:13.040 Tanike, I wouldn't just tell him not to wear that. If he told me he was going to wear that,
00:21:19.000 I would just lock him in a basement for a week as punishment for have ever grieved me so much
00:21:24.220 by trying to wear this chapeau on somebody's podcast. No, this is the man coming for the
00:21:32.720 blood of Pierre Polyev, a man who is like trying to look as much like Pepe Le Pew as humanly
00:21:39.560 possible. I had to write this in response to that hat, my goodness, because it was too funny for me
00:21:47.020 to not comment on. And I said in quotes here, obviously fake quotes, it's time for me to topple
00:21:53.100 Pierre Polyev and take over the federal conservative party with my friends Doug Ford and Jason Kenney.
00:21:58.440 Now all I need to pick out is the right hat.
00:22:01.560 PR disaster ensues.
00:22:03.600 And I said, now all Corey to Nike needs to do is the Dean scream to make sure people know he is super serious.
00:22:09.840 The Dean scream having been that thing that Howard Dean did in 2004, where he's like,
00:22:14.560 then we're going to go to this state, that state, then we're going to go to the Washington DC,
00:22:18.920 and we're going to take back the White House.
00:22:21.140 Hi-ya!
00:22:22.280 And that is the energy that that hat invokes in me.
00:22:26.640 has an entire story in itself he's he's dressed up like he's fraser's manager from the show fraser
00:22:35.840 he's like the freight fraser cranes manager bb glazer all he needs is a long cigarette holder
00:22:42.880 and i don't know a big statement necklace and say you know jason darling we're gonna make you the
00:22:48.720 new prime minister of the country now come with me and have mimosas i'm having too much fun here

00:23:31.040 known about unless you lived directly on that block one person i called who was a viewer gave
00:23:36.800 me really good information that i mentioned a few videos back that there's a lot of people who are
00:23:41.680 actually happy about the idea that the alberta government is experimenting with more private
00:23:46.560 health care options people that this supporter assumed were going to be more liberal and we're
00:23:52.320 going to kind of be elbows up we love the public health care system don't touch it no public health
00:23:57.280 care in canada's gotten so bad that they're actually happy to see daniel smith and the ucp
00:24:01.760 experimenting with private options because no doubt it is going to be reducing wait times so
