00:01:15.480 he lied, but the best lies that are most effective always contain at least some measure of truth.

00:01:21.700 as the serpent and what and what he spoke to Adam and Eve particularly Eve he said you will not

00:01:29.540 surely die if you eat of this fruit but God he's he's holding out on you God is he's got an

00:01:44.860 eat of this fruit you'll be like him that was true but as I've quoted often J.I. Packer says

00:01:51.000 that a half-truth that masquerades itself as a whole truth is a whole lie. When we give part of

00:01:57.080 the truth while very intentionally leaving out other portions of the truth, and we act as though

00:02:02.040 that part of the truth is the whole story, that is deception. That is a lie. The serpent was

00:02:09.140 lying to our first parents by saying, God knows you'll be like God. That's true. They would be 0.90

00:02:14.360 like God. But the rest of the truth is that that's ultimately unsustainable. And it's actually

00:02:22.120 in this sense, it is not good for man to be like God. In this sense, man was never meant to be

00:02:29.100 like God. Because the way in which Adam and Eve and you and I have become like God, apart from

00:02:35.460 salvation in Christ, is like God. We now determine what is moral from what is immoral by inserting

00:02:43.580 the standard as our own character rather than the character of God. In that way, Adam and Eve became

00:02:50.240 like God. So we don't need to read the text and say Adam and Eve were morally ignorant, and God

00:02:57.780 wanted them to remain morally ignorant because the tree gave the knowledge of good and evil, right?

00:03:03.740 If you read it like that, then you start to wonder what's so bad about them eating this fruit. Doesn't

00:03:08.220 God want his people to know the difference between good and evil? Adam and Eve already knew the

00:03:13.240 difference between good and evil. They knew before every eating of the tree, the difference between

00:03:19.360 good and evil was determined based on relating all things to the character of God. Is it consistent

00:03:25.240 with God or is it contrary to his nature? Eating the fruit of the tree of good and evil didn't take

00:03:32.300 them from moral ignorance to moral intelligence. It inserted themselves and their own character as

00:03:40.420 the new standard for what was right and wrong. That was the great sin of our first parents. And

00:03:46.620 that, those implications of that sin, is what we see throughout the entirety of the Bible and the

00:03:52.900 entirety of human history. And that's what we see even in our culture today, whether it's media or

00:03:58.400 whether it's politics. We see, like Judges chapter 21 verse 25, clearly says, every man did what was
