00:00:24.700 we are no longer beholden to the Old Testament law,

00:00:27.980 that we are under the law of grace.

00:00:38.560 Yeah, the Old Testament law specifically.

00:00:40.500 So like Paul, Paul says, don't muzzle the ox.

00:00:44.440 Worker is worthy of his wages.

00:00:46.160 He takes this case law.

00:00:47.240 He applies it, the principle of it, right, to pay your pastor.

00:00:51.240 So obviously the apostle Paul thought that there was something about the Old Testament law

00:00:55.440 that was still applicable somehow.

00:00:57.980 And that was a civil law. That wasn't even just a moral law.

00:01:02.640 And so I do think the distinction between civil, ceremonial, moral is a good one.

00:01:08.520 But what's still in effect, I think, is the moral law.

00:01:11.560 And the civil laws kind of showcase what those moral laws are.

00:01:15.200 So in our context, I think it does take some thinking sometimes.

00:01:24.100 And like, we don't really do that anymore. I know that's a common answer.

00:01:30.920 But there are other things that we do to try to promote safety and make sure that there's not negligence.

00:01:37.200 And so it's the principle that we're looking for.

00:01:40.280 I don't pretend to know how every principle in the Old Testament might apply in certain circumstances.

00:01:44.940 But yeah, I mean, Jesus thought the law still applied.

00:01:48.480 Paul thought the law still applies.

00:01:49.960 I mean, I think the law still applies in some way.

00:01:53.660 You know, most people believe that you should love your neighbor as yourself.

00:01:57.520 Most people believe that you should love the Lord your God with all your heart.

00:02:00.080 And when I say most people, all Christians should believe those things.

00:02:09.240 So if you believe those things, then you believe that you should still do the Old Testament law in that regard.

00:02:20.460 so i would uh one thing that i think is really helpful is the word under right no longer under

00:02:26.340 law but under grace like what does that mean in terms of under because that's different than the

00:02:29.820 law has been eroded or the law has been annihilated it's no longer in existence or no longer in effect

00:02:34.720 i think that the word under what the apostle is getting at is he's speaking of the penalty

00:02:39.220 what for the christian for the one who has faith in jesus who's been born again by grace alone

00:02:43.760 through faith alone in christ alone is no longer under the penalty of the law or the threat of the

00:02:48.120 law, the judgment of the law, the condemnation of the law, but is under the reward that comes by

00:02:53.080 grace through the perfect obedience of another, namely the Lord Jesus Christ. So I think it's

00:02:58.500 talking in terms of penalty. In terms of effect, the law is still in effect. And we know this

00:03:04.020 because of what AD said, the Lord Jesus himself said that the Lord Jesus gives us an exposition

00:03:09.620 of Exodus chapter 20. So love the Lord your God with all your hearts with Matthew 22, 37, 38,

00:03:14.800 39 uh and he said to him love the it's part of our catechism so it's he said to him love the lord

00:03:19.920 your god with all your heart with all your soul and with all your mind the second greatest

00:03:22.720 commandment is like it that you should love your neighbor as yourself the problem is right there

00:03:26.120 at that moment um people and even christians sadly will say and and and i'll take it from here

00:03:31.700 so love the lord and love my neighbor and people say and i will determine what is loving i will

00:03:38.780 define what is loving to god and what is loving to neighbor whereas i would say no no god doesn't

00:03:44.160 just get to command us to love him and love people but god also gets to define what is in fact

00:03:49.400 objectively loving to god and loving to people and here we have the two tables of the law so we have

00:03:54.720 love the lord your god that's the first table of the ten commandments the first four so what is

00:03:59.020 loving to the lord have no other gods before me do not make any graven images do not take the lord's

00:04:03.820 name in vain and honor remember the sabbath and keep it holy so i would say do not have any gods

00:04:14.140 that, the equity of that, I would say that that means that we worship by faith and not by sight.

00:04:19.900 We do not walk by sight, but by faith. And faith comes not by what we see, but faith cometh by

00:04:24.780 hearing and hearing by the word of Christ. So Christians are a word centric people, not an

00:04:29.980 image centric people. And that has to do with our faith. The third, do not take the Lord's name in

00:04:34.340 vain. The heartbeat of that is love God with sincerity. It shouldn't be trivial. It shouldn't

00:04:38.640 be flippant. It should like love God with sincerity. And the fourth is that we should be people who

00:04:43.020 rest on the sabbath day the christian sabbath which christ who is lord of the sabbath did not

00:04:47.760 remove but by virtue of his resurrection who resurrected on the first day of the week he did

00:04:52.500 not remove the sabbath but rather renewed it from the last day of the week to the first

00:04:55.780 and so with that that's what it so when it says love the lord your god with all your heart soul

00:05:00.120 mind exodus 20 tells us what that looks like and it does the same with love your neighbor that's
