00:00:00.000 Hi everybody, this is Scott Saad for The Sad Truth.
00:00:03.320 Last night I went to see the new movie Conclave with one of our children and my wife.
00:00:11.760 And I was very excited to see the movie because I've always been fascinated by that process.
00:00:17.900 For those of you who don't know, the Conclave is the very, very secretive process
00:00:24.440 by which the College of Cardinals in the Catholic Church decide who the next Pope is going to be
00:00:32.760 once the sitting Pope either passes away, usually that's what happens, or if he resigns.
00:00:43.020 Now actually, it had always been a fantasy of mine to study the actual process
00:00:51.820 by which the Cardinals make the decision.
00:00:54.860 Because as some of you know, my doctoral training and my doctoral dissertation
00:01:00.100 was in the area of psychology of decision making.
00:01:03.140 And so I'd always thought, my God, could you imagine how incredible it would be
00:01:07.620 to have access to the actual deliberations, the negotiations, the persuasion strategies
00:01:16.160 that might take place in such a process.
00:01:19.520 But I always knew that that would just be an unfulfilled fantasy
00:01:23.500 because I never imagined that I would ever have access to such information.
00:01:29.820 But in any case, the process of the Conclave with its pageantry and history and secrecy
00:01:37.900 is something that had always fascinated me.
00:01:40.040 And so I went to the movie with great expectations.
00:01:43.440 And of course, the ensemble, that's the actors, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini.
00:01:57.220 So this was just, wow, I couldn't wait.
00:02:00.040 I remember another movie that, I mean, although much older in terms of when it happened,
00:02:06.460 The Name of the Rose with Sean Connery, which happened, I actually refer to it in the parasitic mind.
00:02:14.600 It's a movie that happened during the, almost a thousand years ago.
00:02:20.560 I think it was around the 12th or 13th century, where there is a monastery
00:02:28.220 where all of the monks are mysteriously passing away.
00:02:32.620 And then Sean Connery's character is sent there to investigate.
00:02:37.620 And so I've always found, you know, the church fascinating,
00:02:45.540 even though, of course, I'm Jewish, right?
00:02:47.560 So this has nothing to do with religion.
00:02:49.620 It has to do with history and, in this case, secrecy and pageantry.
00:02:54.880 And so I'm watching the movie, and it's absolutely fascinating in that it reminded me very much of 12 Angry Men.
00:03:02.480 This is the original, arguably my favorite movie of all time.
00:03:06.840 For those of you who have never seen it, you should,
00:03:08.660 because it's a perfect example of the psychological processes that go into group dynamics,
00:03:14.480 that go into how do you convince someone to come to your position.
00:03:21.200 I won't give it away, but you should definitely watch it.
00:03:24.340 It stars Henry Fonda.
00:03:26.860 In any case, in the movie yesterday, Conclave, it was just very gripping.
00:03:34.820 The scenery, the cinematography was absolutely breathtaking,
00:03:40.160 seeing the cardinals with their red robes and so on.
00:03:44.880 It's really quite beautiful.
00:03:46.680 And all the machinations that take place.
00:03:49.920 I mean, right, these are cardinals, so you somehow think that they're somehow holy.
00:03:55.700 But, of course, they succumb to all of the usual frailties of all humans, right?
00:04:02.340 Unchecked ambition, Machiavellianism, manipulation, and so on and so forth.
00:04:12.220 Then about, I can't remember exactly what happened, but about with 20 minutes left in the movie.
00:04:16.500 Now, by the way, spoiler alert.
00:04:18.640 If you're planning on going seeing this movie, do not listen past this point,
00:04:24.020 because I'm going to spoil the ending for you.
00:04:26.620 So, spoiler alert, you've been warned.
00:04:30.040 So, at one point, there's a bomb that explodes outside where the conclave is taking place.
00:04:37.200 And one of the cardinals, you know, they all, some people die outside,
00:04:43.540 but all of the cardinals come out with some injuries, but unscathed otherwise.
00:04:50.880 And one of the cardinals, who is a traditionalist, gets up and basic,
00:04:57.440 and I guess the presumption is that it's an Islamic terror attack,
00:05:02.540 gets up and says, this is a holy war against, with Islam.
00:05:05.820 It's, you know, they've been persecuting us forever.
00:05:08.920 They show no tolerance towards us.
00:05:11.780 We should sow no tolerance towards them, and so on and so forth.
00:05:14.540 And then a cardinal who, you know, had not at all planned on becoming, you know,
00:05:26.040 was not one of the contenders to become the next pope,
00:05:29.480 gets up and starts saying, you know,
00:05:32.460 very much in line with my next book, Suicidal Empathy.
00:05:36.780 No, you know, we're better than that.
00:05:39.300 We're loving and so on.
00:05:40.680 And so, you know, Islam is beautiful.
00:05:43.360 I mean, I'm paraphrasing.
00:05:44.420 It's not to rush to judgment and all this.
00:05:48.160 Right away, that rang very false to me.
00:05:50.920 Like, why are you suddenly injecting this, you know, Islam is beautiful stuff?
00:05:56.320 But that wasn't the end of the descent into the woke abyss,
00:06:03.760 because we find out that that cardinal turns out to be intersex,
00:06:12.120 and he is voted to be the next pope subsequent to his very loving and empathetic,
00:06:20.040 you know, rebuttal to, you know, Islam hates us.
00:06:24.640 And it turns out that he had a uterus, he had gone, you know, so he's intersex.
00:06:31.160 He had gone to a clinic to have it removed, but then felt, you know,
00:06:34.380 he had lived his life as a male, but felt that maybe this was false for him to be a cardinal.
00:06:40.800 He had asked to, the pope, you know, he had given his resignation,
00:06:47.080 but the pope convinced him that, no, I don't want you to leave the order, you know,
00:06:52.780 to no longer be a cardinal.
00:06:56.080 And then the dean of the College of Cardinals, who is the, who is Ralph Fiennes,
00:07:03.840 goes ahead and, you know, the votes are tallied and the intersex cardinal becomes pope.
00:07:15.480 Now, again, please understand that I, you know, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm hardly a Catholic.
00:07:23.100 I'm Lebanese Jew, so it's not as though I'm, I'm religiously offended.
00:07:27.480 But I'm offended by the fact that there is no place that we can go where we're not moralized to,
00:07:38.820 we're not talked down to, by the anointed ones about how we should think, right?
00:07:46.640 If you want to buy a beer, well, Dylan Mulvaney, you know, the lady Dylan Mulvaney,
00:07:55.880 who happens to have testicles and a penis, is the one who is telling you that you should drink this beer.
00:08:03.860 If you go to a football match, American football or an NBA game or a soccer match,
00:08:09.600 you then have the kneeling, you know, BLM, there's no room for racism here.
00:08:14.460 If you go to a movie about one of the most ancient, most mysterious, most secretive,
00:08:22.700 most pageant-laden processes called the Conclave, where you choose the pope,
00:08:30.040 now we have to incorporate, you know, intersex, you know, what's a man, what's a woman.
00:08:38.120 It's time for the Catholic Church to move forward and be modernized.
00:08:42.820 No, Islam is not against Catholics.
00:08:45.660 It's a beautiful, peaceful, tolerant religion.
00:08:48.820 And so there is no place where you can go where you can escape the anointed ones,
00:08:55.840 to use Thomas Sowell's apt term, teaching us how to be better people.
00:09:03.420 And that is deeply offensive, right?
00:09:06.300 Because I want to watch a soccer match without being told how I need to be a better person.
00:09:14.820 I want to go as a professor to my university without having to take mandatory training
00:09:21.940 on how to speak to women because otherwise all men are potential rapists, right?
00:09:28.180 That's not how a free society behaves, where there are superior people, more enlightened people,
00:09:35.300 whether they are your employer or your beer manufacturer or your filmmakers or your politicians
00:09:42.660 who are teaching you how to be a better person.
00:09:45.700 shut the F up, create art, and stop moralizing to us.
00:09:52.720 So, you know, the conclave until the last 20 minutes was a brilliant movie.
00:09:59.680 And then the last 20 minutes, I have to tell you my recommendation,
00:10:04.820 if you're in any way offended by all this woke, parasitic, moralizing, avoid the movie.
00:10:12.820 Have a great Sunday, everybody.
