00:02:27.660 As often happens in the Middle East, whenever there is some situation that happens,

00:02:36.200 By the way, the Arabic word for fervor is hamas.
00:02:41.560 And so they go to the street and they start screaming all kinds of nonsense.

00:03:40.280 The reason why I like to tell these stories is because it contextualizes what it's like to grow up Jewish in the Middle East in the context of Lebanon that historically was referred to as the most cosmopolitan, most tolerant, the Paris of the Middle East. 0.56
00:03:57.900 Well, that's really yes and no, because even within the context of Lebanon, the tapestry of everyday life was rife with Jew hatred.

00:05:44.960 Coincidentally, the Summer Olympics were happening that year in Montreal.
00:05:50.160 He ended up representing Lebanon at the Montreal Summer Olympics.

00:07:38.180 Montreal that is filled with a particular demographic group and as he
00:07:44.180 was coming to pick me up at the cafe where I was working on my laptop with
00:07:47.780 what with my wife he came into the I came into the car and he said daddy if
00:07:53.140 you were wearing a star of David today where I was playing soccer you'd be dead
00:07:57.800 so in 1975 I leave Lebanon so that I can wear a star of David in 2023 I can no
00:08:05.840 wear a Star of David in Montreal Canada now I then ended up taking a leave of
00:08:12.380 absence from my then university I was there for 32 years and for much of the
00:08:17.900 time it was a beautiful time there but it is a university that regrettably has
00:08:23.120 a lot of its colloquially has been referred to as Gaza University for 25
00:08:29.480 years now Benjamin Netanyahu was cancelled from speaking there in 2002
00:08:36.320 before it was cool to be cancelled so so the reality is that the the dynamics in 0.92

00:12:28.480 aristotle aristotle in nicomachean ethics talked about the golden mean too little of something is
00:12:35.080 not good, too much of something is not good, and much of life is about finding that middle sweet
00:12:40.140 spot. Well, that principle exactly applies to empathy. If you have no empathy, you could
00:12:47.480 potentially be a psychopath. That's literally true. Most psychopaths lack an empathy 0.94
00:12:53.700 computational system. But if you have too much empathy, if it hyperfires in the wrong situations

00:16:52.480 and as I cross I get hit by the bus that was my destiny if I cross the street and
00:16:58.120 I don't get hit by the bus that was my destiny therefore there is no state of
00:17:03.040 the world that violates the principle that that which is is and therefore the
00:17:09.160 concept of destiny is not within the realm of the scientific method because
00:17:14.380 it fails Popper's falsification principle okay so now let's get back to
