00:00:46.700 On August 12th, 2017,
00:00:49.280 a neo-Nazi deliberately drove his car
00:00:51.440 into a crowd of left-wing protesters
00:00:53.300 in Charlottesville, Virginia,
00:00:55.400 killing a 32-year-old woman called Heather Heyer
00:00:57.480 and injuring 35 others.
00:00:59.760 America and the rest of the world were on a knife edge.
00:01:02.900 The victims were assembled to counter
00:01:04.440 the Unite the Right rally,
00:01:06.160 a demonstration against the proposed removal
00:01:08.100 of a statue of Robert E. Lee, a Confederate general.
00:01:11.300 And the attack acted as a climax
00:01:13.140 to the nation's increasing polarization
00:01:15.020 and paranoia about President Trump's links
00:01:18.180 with the so-called alt-right.
00:01:19.780 At a press conference in the media aftermath,
00:01:22.320 President Trump made a series of incendiary comments,
00:01:24.680 including saying that there were very fine people
00:01:27.720 on both sides.
00:01:29.140 Like many, I was horrified and outraged
00:01:31.640 by the fact that instead of trying to bring calm,
00:01:34.480 Trump chose to further inflame
00:01:36.160 a highly volatile situation.
00:01:38.020 But not nearly as horrified and outraged as I was
00:01:40.780 when I later discovered that this was all
00:01:43.100 an elaborate orchestrated media hoax.
00:01:45.740 In actual fact, at that very press conference,
00:01:49.140 President Trump made it clear that his comments
00:01:51.580 were describing peaceful protesters
00:01:53.360 who opposed the removal of the statue,
00:01:56.120 saying,
00:01:56.340 I'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and white nationalists
00:01:59.760 because they should be condemned totally.
00:02:02.160 But the media cut his comments out of context
00:02:04.800 and ran headline after headline
00:02:07.020 claiming he was defending the very people
00:02:09.420 he'd just condemned.
00:02:10.660 To this day, millions of people believe this lie.
00:02:13.920 Last week, I saw it again here in Britain
00:02:16.260 when the Labour Party clipped comments by Matt Goodwin,
00:02:19.680 reforms candidate in the upcoming Gorton and Denton
00:02:22.540 by-election, out of context to claim
00:02:24.740 he'd criticized Manchester
00:02:26.440 when he was in fact criticizing
00:02:28.520 the Conservative Party conference,
00:02:30.860 which had been held in Manchester.
00:02:32.940 This time, the media didn't have to lie.
00:02:35.040 Our politicians did it for them.
00:02:36.800 These dirty tricks are sadly part
00:02:38.620 of the ugly game of politics.
00:02:40.540 More troublingly,
00:02:41.640 they are now increasingly spreading
00:02:43.160 to the arena of public debate more broadly.
00:02:45.540 During my appearance on Question Time last week,
00:02:48.040 the usually decent Labour Minister Douglas Alexander
00:02:50.720 tried to pull a similar move on me.
00:02:53.060 Unable to respond to my criticism
00:02:55.100 of his government's failure on immigration
00:02:56.960 and the attempt to demonize millions
00:02:59.020 of normal British people
00:03:00.200 who dared to notice that failure,
00:03:02.360 he instead tried to suggest that I'm a bigot.
00:03:04.680 You said Rishi Sunak isn't English
00:03:06.680 because he's a brown Hindu, was his retort.
00:03:09.040 This is a skillful lie on several levels,
00:03:11.120 the purpose of which was to deflect attention
00:03:13.100 away from his and his party's failings.
00:03:15.720 Here's how it works.
00:03:16.900 First, he deliberately concealed from the viewer
00:03:19.120 that my comments were made in a discussion
00:03:21.000 of the difference between British and English identity
00:03:23.960 so that it looks like I was saying
00:03:26.020 Rishi Sunak doesn't belong in Britain.
00:03:28.160 That's not what I was saying.
00:03:29.560 Second, he failed to mention
00:03:30.980 that in that very same conversation,
00:03:33.380 I explained that my son,
00:03:35.140 born to two immigrant parents like Sunak,
00:03:37.800 is also, in my view, not English.
00:03:40.160 No matter how evil Douglas Alexander thinks I am,
00:03:42.920 even he could hardly accuse me
00:03:44.240 of being racist against my own children.
00:03:46.280 Third, he failed to mention that Fraser Nelson,
00:03:48.220 the journalist with whom we were having the debate,
00:03:50.620 wrote an article after was describing my view
00:03:53.000 with which he disagrees as a perfectly fair point.
00:03:56.600 Fourth, he failed to mention
00:03:58.180 that Fraser was the one that brought up Rishi Sunak,
00:04:00.960 not me.
00:04:01.360 I don't go around discussing who's English and who isn't.
00:04:03.920 And fifth, finally, and most importantly,
00:04:06.300 he didn't mention that prior to being elected,
00:04:08.780 Rishi Sunak described himself as British Indian,
00:04:11.920 saying, British Indian is what I take on the census.
00:04:15.100 We have a category for it.
00:04:16.360 I am thoroughly British.
00:04:18.320 This is my home and my country.
00:04:20.320 But my religious and cultural heritage is Indian.
00:04:23.520 My wife is Indian.
00:04:24.840 These five steps is how you go from two people
00:04:27.340 having a reasonable discussion about their views
00:04:29.460 of what it means to be English and British
00:04:31.220 to pretending that one of them is evil.
00:04:33.880 Even if you disagree with what I said
00:04:35.780 or thought I didn't articulate my point well,
00:04:38.340 this is dishonest framing.
00:04:39.980 Why do they do this?
00:04:41.340 Because it's easier than addressing
00:04:42.920 the arguments I'm making.
00:04:44.180 On question time, I made two basic points.
00:04:47.400 One is that net zero is industrial suicide,
00:04:50.440 which has destroyed our economy
00:04:51.900 and produced zero growth since 2008.
00:04:54.900 The second is that both Labour and Conservative governments
00:04:57.380 have imported more people into Britain
00:04:59.180 over their respective terms and power
00:05:01.060 than had come between 1066 and 1950.
00:05:04.520 Can they deny this?
00:05:05.920 No.
00:05:06.760 Can they dispute the facts?
00:05:08.440 No.
00:05:09.220 So all they have are the smears and the insults.
00:05:11.800 Over the last few days, there's been an attempt
00:05:13.980 by a few non-entities on social media
00:05:15.940 to have me banned from further question time appearances.
00:05:19.420 These people still think it's 2016 when these tactics worked.
00:05:22.920 Let me explain something to you.
00:05:24.640 You've had the monopoly on the microphone for a long time
00:05:27.340 and it's made you lazy and it's made you arrogant.
00:05:30.160 More than 2 million people now watch and listen to Trigonometry.
00:05:33.300 100,000 read my Substack every week.
00:05:35.800 Our show is part of a massive ecosystem of alternative media,
00:05:39.260 which is the reason the legacy media is dying.
00:05:42.120 You can keep trying to cancel people from the conversation
00:05:44.640 to maintain your echo chamber.
00:05:46.760 But even if you succeed,
00:05:48.100 all that will achieve is driving more people into our arms.
00:05:51.220 If you really hate my views and what I stand for,
00:05:54.220 there's only one thing you can do.
00:05:56.040 Make better arguments.
00:05:57.380 Good luck.
00:05:58.240 You're going to need it.
00:06:00.000 One final thing.
00:06:01.380 A lot of people on social media over the last few days
00:06:03.560 have called me a grifter.
00:06:04.640 And because of that, I'd just like to remind you,
00:06:06.280 you can find my work at www.constantantkissen.com
00:06:09.900 and of course, Trigonometry at triggerpod.co.uk.
00:06:14.140 Most people think they're informed.
00:06:16.380 In reality, they're selectively informed.
00:06:18.640 Modern media doesn't just tell stories.
00:06:20.780 It quietly decides which ones you never hear about at all.
00:06:24.140 That's why I use Ground News.
00:06:26.060 It's the only app that compares how the same story
00:06:28.840 is covered across the political spectrum
00:06:30.560 and show you what whole audiences are not being told.
00:06:33.520 The Blindspot feed is one of my favorite features.
00:06:36.520 Every day, it flags upwards of 20 stories
00:06:38.700 that are being ignored either by the left or the right.
00:06:41.320 Follow along at ground.news slash trigonometry.
00:06:43.880 Take this story.
00:06:44.760 A major US poll found that Republican voters' confidence
00:06:47.580 in Trump's economic leadership
00:06:49.020 has dropped sharply during his second term.
00:06:51.620 That is not a minor data point.
00:06:53.380 If you only read right-leaning publications,
00:06:55.560 you would have missed this completely.
00:06:57.240 On the other hand, look at this.
00:06:58.680 The UAE drops UK from scholarship list
00:07:01.180 over radicalization concerns on university campuses.
00:07:04.440 That's a significant story.
00:07:05.940 Yet, coverage from left-leaning outlets
00:07:07.740 was almost non-existent.
00:07:09.120 Ground News puts all of this in one place.
00:07:11.320 Headlines, bias breakdowns, ownership, and context.
00:07:14.560 So you can actually understand what's going on,
00:07:17.420 not just react to what you're told.
00:07:19.160 Go to ground.news slash trigonometry
00:07:21.140 to get 40% off their unlimited vantage plan.
00:07:24.160 The same one we use.
00:07:25.520 And stop being managed by the media.
00:07:28.680 We know you've been waiting.
