00:00:00.000 Never go full Tucker.
00:00:05.380 For days now, my timeline has been full of clips from the allegedly blockbuster showdown
00:00:10.880 between American podcaster Tucker Carlson and British politician and broadcaster Jacob Rees-Mogg,
00:00:17.460 in which they clashed on the subject of the Second World War.
00:00:21.080 Based on excerpts, I prepared myself for something genuinely dark.
00:00:24.920 One clip in which Carlson claims he has no idea why Britain fought World War II
00:00:29.880 was particularly worrying.
00:00:31.680 This, I thought, is the moment.
00:00:33.260 Tucker has finally gone all the way.
00:00:35.620 He's crossed the Rubicon, set up a tent on the other side
00:00:38.320 and started selling merch with my struggle on it.
00:00:40.660 And so, despite wanting to watch the entire thing
00:00:43.580 less than a remake of Downfall directed by Daryl Cooper,
00:00:47.100 I forced myself to.
00:00:48.400 Sadly, far from being disgusting and outrageous,
00:00:51.940 it's mostly just disappointing.
00:00:53.280 As he correctly says in the discussion,
00:00:55.900 Carlson isn't a secret Nazi.
00:00:58.060 he's just ideologically captured and not very bright.
00:01:01.100 A typical podcaster, in other words.
00:01:02.800 As regular viewers will know, I've talked extensively about what I call the woke right.
00:01:07.040 This is a term that has caused much consternation because to many people,
00:01:11.020 wokeness is definitionally a pathology of the far left.
00:01:14.660 To be woke is to be extremely left-wing.
00:01:16.980 I take a different view.
00:01:18.060 To me, wokeness is a pathology of human beings
00:01:21.020 that is reflected not in the views people hold,
00:01:23.920 but in the behavior its adherents feel entitled to engage in.
00:01:27.080 Most people have been implicitly taught to think of the political spectrum as a line with communism on the far left and fascism on the far right.
00:01:34.860 Horseshoe theory, on the other hand, sees these far ends of the spectrum bending towards each other and meeting as they reach for the same methods.
00:01:43.180 We saw this in the 1930s when the hostility to an act of destruction of democracy,
00:01:48.200 suppression of criticism, scapegoating and extermination of out-groups,
00:01:52.460 socialist economics, militarism and so on were prevalent both in the communist world
00:01:57.380 and in the fascist countries of Europe and beyond.
00:02:00.720 The horseshoe theory of wokeness is no different.
00:02:03.160 The ideology which is parodied as gay race communism is different from the post-liberal right,
00:02:08.780 but the methodology is similar.
00:02:10.620 Identitarian victimhood, a belief in the fundamental immorality
00:02:14.040 and irredeemability of their political opponents,
00:02:17.160 and a general black and white thinking about everything,
00:02:20.260 including war, history, and politics.
00:02:22.820 The woke left's approach to history is simple.
00:02:25.360 Imagine a perfect world.
00:02:27.080 Now look at people who lived 200 years ago
00:02:29.300 and noticed that they were not living in it.
00:02:31.780 Conclude that they were monsters.
00:02:33.640 Tear down the statues.
00:02:34.920 And what about the woke rights approach?
00:02:36.760 Imagine a perfect world.
00:02:38.500 Now look at the people who were making impossible decisions before and during World War II
00:02:42.860 and notice that both the process and the outcome were not perfect either.
00:02:47.380 Conclude that they too were monsters and invert the moral order.
00:02:50.520 This is how you get to that Churchill was the greatest villain of World War II rhetoric
00:02:54.140 and what is that if not the metaphorical tearing down of his statue.
00:02:58.520 Killing innocent people is always wrong, Tucker emotes.
00:03:01.380 And of course, in a utopian vacuum, we'd all agree with him because it's superficially true and important.
00:03:07.440 Proportionality, discrimination, the whole apparatus of just war theory
00:03:10.840 exists precisely because we take it seriously.
00:03:14.140 But as a moral position about the Second World War,
00:03:16.980 it's not profound, it's childish.
00:03:19.260 The Second World War was a mass slaughter of civilians.
00:03:22.440 That was its defining characteristic.
00:03:24.840 The Axis powers murdered civilians on an industrial scale as policy,
00:03:29.180 continuously, until the moment they were physically prevented from continuing.
00:03:33.080 Six million Jews, millions of Slavs, and that's just Hitler's Germany.
00:03:37.000 Japan had been in Manchuria since 1931 and had full-scale war with China since 1937.
00:03:43.300 By the time Hitler invaded Poland, millions of Chinese civilians were already dead,
00:03:48.580 with much of the killing done in close quarters and by hand,
00:03:51.720 beheaded with swords, burnt or buried alive, or used for bayonet practice.
00:03:55.840 So the actual question, the one any serious person has to answer, is not,
00:04:00.580 is killing innocents wrong? It's this.
00:04:03.660 Given the mass killing of innocents already happening,
00:04:06.440 at vast scale every single day.
00:04:09.860 Are you willing to use force to stop it,
00:04:12.380 knowing that doing so will kill enemy combatants
00:04:14.780 and civilians too, but in far smaller numbers?
00:04:17.660 When moral perfection is the standard,
00:04:19.980 Carlson's whataboutism almost works.
00:04:22.760 In fact, it seems to work on millions of people
00:04:25.080 who want simple explanations for complex problems.
00:04:27.620 Look over here, says Tucker.
00:04:29.620 Britain locked up political opponents
00:04:31.540 and their wives during the war.
00:04:33.240 How undemocratic.
00:04:34.140 To disrupt the framing of Churchill, good, Nazis, bad, Britain did X less than perfect thing is close to compelling.
00:04:42.040 Less so when you know the facts.
00:04:43.740 The person he's talking about is Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Union of Fascists.
00:04:49.400 Mosley was interned in May 1940 with the invasion expected within weeks.
00:04:54.280 He had married Diana Mitford at Goebbels House with Hitler as a guest.
00:04:58.100 Diana had met Hitler repeatedly and was lobbying for a pro-Nazi radio station in Britain.
00:05:04.140 He was released in 1943 on health grounds despite a public outcry
00:05:08.440 and lived on until his death in 1980.
00:05:11.540 Such tyranny!
00:05:12.800 Next, Carlson explains that Hitler never wanted war with Britain.
00:05:15.980 After all, he said so.
00:05:17.740 And if you can't trust Adolf Hitler, who can you trust?
00:05:20.220 Seriously, though, ask yourself.
00:05:21.960 Is this a coherent position for someone who's built a career
00:05:25.960 on being suspicious of powerful elites?
00:05:28.560 Would Tucker accept this line of argument regarding Joe Biden
00:05:31.760 or Anthony Fauci or even Donald Trump?
00:05:34.140 By the way, we know exactly what Hitler wanted.
00:05:36.480 He wanted Germany to become a hegemonic power in Europe,
00:05:40.580 an aspiration which had been the organizing principle
00:05:43.640 of British foreign policy for 400 years to prevent.
00:05:47.260 If you're a fan of logical consistency, by the way,
00:05:50.000 you'll know that Carlson advances the argument
00:05:52.160 that Russia was provoked into invading Ukraine in 2022
00:05:55.400 because great powers will always concern themselves
00:05:58.660 with what happens on their borders.
00:06:00.760 Yet Britain, a great power in 1939,
00:06:03.260 I was supposed to look absentmindedly on as Hitler gobbled up all of Europe? Besides,
00:06:08.620 as the Soviet Union found out, even an alliance with Hitler didn't mean he would not turn on you
00:06:13.140 the moment he felt it was to his advantage. After signing the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Stalin
00:06:18.460 in 1939 and invading Poland together, Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa less than two
00:06:24.300 years later, invading the Soviet Union and butchering its citizens. Which brings us to
00:06:29.200 the exchange, everyone has clipped. When asked why Britain fought World War II,
00:06:33.480 Reece Mogg replies that we'd all be speaking German. Tucker says, who cares? We'd all be
00:06:38.480 speaking German is English shorthand and has been for 80 years, but we would be living under an
00:06:43.560 exterminationist tyranny. British people do have an aversion to foreign languages, but World War
00:06:48.600 II was not about a phobia of really long nouns. This is the point at which Carlson deploys his
00:06:53.400 favorite trick of invoking Britain's current problems as being a direct consequence of the
00:06:58.060 victory, which he puts in air quotes. If you won that war, why is your country so screwed is
00:07:02.960 effectively his question. This is another bout of utopianism, of course, because as with the woke
00:07:08.220 left, he deliberately avoids the actual choice which faced Britain in the 1930s. We were not
00:07:13.620 choosing between fighting the war and the land of peace, milk and honey. Even if we accept that the
00:07:18.420 current state of Britain, which I agree is depressing, is a consequence of fighting a war
00:07:22.620 nearly a century ago, a tenuous claim at best, that does not mean that a Hitlerian empire stretching
00:07:27.940 from Kalit of Vladivostok was a better alternative.
00:07:31.280 Tucker's rhetorical posture is easy to adopt,
00:07:34.020 but hard to disguise.
00:07:35.460 He almost succeeds in making his
00:07:37.500 why is your country screwed argument
00:07:39.560 sound like a far-reaching,
00:07:41.700 all-encompassing philosophical query.
00:07:44.200 Like he's exploding the bounds of our tunnel vision.
00:07:46.980 In reality, he's just moving the goalposts.
00:07:49.560 Somehow, Churchill is expected to not only answer
00:07:52.140 for his conduct in World War II,
00:07:54.300 but every absurd and short-sighted policy decision
00:07:57.160 that came since, including those made decades after his death by people who hate everything
00:08:02.900 he stood for? All of this is just incredibly low-quality, motivated reasoning about history,
00:08:09.160 which we've seen before from the Imran X. Kendi's and Robin DiAngelo's of the world.
00:08:13.900 Indeed, it's not an accident that Churchill has been the target of far-left attacks for decades.
00:08:18.760 He represents as much of a threat to their worldview as he does to Carsons, and for the
00:08:23.540 same reason. Britain was right to fight the Nazis. It did so honorably, and its victory is one of the
00:08:29.460 great achievements of Western civilization. If you enjoyed these videos, remember to go to

00:08:57.220 That's why I'm making sure to keep a portion of my savings in gold.
00:09:01.060 The reason the price of everything continues to go up
00:09:03.420 is that governments keep printing money.
00:09:05.780 When they do, inflation is inevitable.
00:09:08.260 What does inflation mean?
00:09:09.740 It's just a fancy word for the value of your money being diluted over time.
00:09:13.720 This is what's happened to the value of the dollar in our lifetimes.
00:09:16.900 Gold is a great way to preserve the fruits of your hard work
00:09:19.880 while the value of your dollars, pounds, and euros is continually being eroded.
