Valuetainment - “Career Suicide？” - Gen Z’s Job Interview Habits are Raising Red Flags

00:00:00.000 It's incredibly disrespectful to do a virtual job interview by phone, 1.00

00:00:04.800 but Gen Z is doing it anyway. 0.99

00:00:08.020 This is a Market Watch story. 0.92

00:00:10.320 How many guys are doing job interviews with a phone?

00:00:14.080 Oh, hi, sir.

00:00:15.940 And it's like moving, and you're trying to track,

00:00:18.080 and you watch the interview.

00:00:19.120 Let the guys in court.

00:00:19.740 Let me read this to you.

00:00:20.740 I'm curious to know if everybody else is kind of on the same page with this.

00:00:25.540 It's incredible.

00:00:26.540 Is it this one?

00:00:27.340 Okay, there it is.

00:00:28.280 Gen Z job candidates are increasingly using smart ones for virtual interviews

00:00:31.860 and a trend that has sparked debate about professionalism.

00:00:33.940 Career coach Melissa Marcus, a former recruit of 20 years,

00:00:37.040 called it incredibly disrespectful, noting the vertical format

00:00:40.260 makes candidates appear on a small screen like FaceTime, TikTok influencer.

00:00:44.140 Sophie Rocha went viral after posting about a candidate who interviewed by phone,

00:00:48.020 writing, she lost faith in our generation by the choice,

00:00:51.460 but the choice reflects deeper shifts.

00:00:53.820 Most Gen Zers grew up with smartphones.

00:00:56.400 The iPhone debuted when the oldest were about 10, and 90% of U.S. households own one versus 81% with a laptop.

00:01:04.420 Lower-income candidates are far more likely to have a phone than a computer.

00:01:07.660 Career coach Lindsey Bocardo, who works with Gen Z, said this has more to do with the technology they grew up with

00:01:15.520 rather than a sign of respect or not.

00:01:17.800 So, Tom, where are you at with this?

00:01:19.280 If you do an interview and somebody's on their phone, do you take them seriously?

00:01:25.360 No.

00:01:26.400 And you know what's really funny?

00:01:27.520 Tell me.

00:01:28.040 You can turn a phone sideways, and you can lean it against a coffee cup, and you can

00:01:32.100 stand up straight, even against a backdrop in Starbucks, and say, hey, Tom, I'm sorry,

00:01:38.180 I'm at a Starbucks.

00:01:39.080 I hope it's quiet enough here.

00:01:40.260 I had to step out of my office because it wouldn't be appropriate to have an interview.

00:01:43.980 You know, we're here during work hours, you know, one in the afternoon, because I'd like

00:01:48.200 to interview for this position.

00:01:49.680 I've had somebody say that to me.

00:01:51.780 And you know what I say about that?

00:01:52.860 I respect it.

00:01:54.100 I respect it.

00:01:54.840 But if you're just holding the phone, walking down the hall or something, very nice to meet you.

00:01:59.360 And then you sit down.

00:02:01.060 There is it.

00:02:02.060 So they grew up in the vertical format because they got a post on Instagram.

00:02:06.200 I get that.

00:02:07.360 But there's also certain things to sit down and to be taken seriously.

00:02:12.440 And communication skills are lacking.

00:02:15.220 Oh, they can text and abbreviate and talk.

00:02:18.240 But there's a lot of Gen Z, this digitally native generation.

00:02:24.000 and I'm not throwing out the baby with the bath water. There's a lot of smart people here,

00:02:28.800 but we need to teach them about person to person communication and etiquette when you're looking

00:02:35.580 for a job and somebody wants to trust you with running or being or impacting part of their

00:02:41.860 company. And so I think there is a generational thing here. I don't sweep them all over and into

00:02:48.380 a stack, Pat, but I have experienced it, but I've also experienced them saying, Hey, it's the middle

00:02:53.740 a day i had to step aside here and this is where i can take the interview and i that i respect when

00:02:59.700 they tell me because they had no other choice and they stepped away to take a break because they

00:03:04.140 wanted a different job i mean vinnie has a good point vinnie do you want to show him a case study

00:03:08.060 yes you're like what's wrong with that time guys anytime you're facetiming or doing all that stuff

00:03:12.600 this is a video from a while ago oh this is fantastic a man with a suspended license shocks

00:03:18.080 the judge by driving during a zoom court appearance can you play this oh this is are you driving

00:03:23.880 actually i'm pulling into my doctor's office actually so so i'll just give me one second

00:03:32.580 i'm parking right now you stationary i'm pulling in right now at the second yes i am brace for it

00:03:42.280 what are we doing so maybe i don't understand something this is a driving

00:03:48.520 license suspended that is correct your honor and he was just driving

00:03:53.600 and he didn't have a license i don't even know why he would do that

00:04:02.180 so defendant's bond is revoked in this matter defendant is to turn himself into the washington

00:04:07.960 to kind of jail by 6 p.m. today failure to turn himself in will result in a bench warrant with no 0.71

00:04:13.040 bond and my bad judge anything zoom facetime that's just double dumb that's all that's just 0.95

00:04:25.200 your dumb but but to me you know when you're getting now let's go to jeffrey tobin when 0.99

00:04:28.680 you're getting a job and you're and you're trying to get a job all you're trying to do is make a 1.00

00:04:34.400 great first impression yep and a great first impression is what did you shave shave do you

00:04:41.180 have gel in your hair no fix your hair you know do you put on some makeup put on some makeup do

00:04:47.820 you have you know a nice outfit you have on put a nice outfit on do you have a nice shirt and a tie

00:04:54.900 if you don't wear something nice yesterday I interviewed this lady who was in New York and 0.99

00:04:58.560 she's uh applying for a very heavyweight job that we have it's a very important job

00:05:03.520 extremely presentable very professional very sharp handled herself incredibly well the moment

00:05:10.900 we got off the interview i told tom i said i really like the way she presents herself so guess

00:05:16.380 what look at the phrase my first word to tom was i really like the way she presents herself because

00:05:22.640 she's going to be presenting us to others so that's how she's presenting herself to us imagine

00:05:28.320 how she's going to present herself to others.

00:05:30.240 Unlike Adam, who is a

00:05:32.460 professional

00:05:34.000 Uber driver, unemployed.

00:05:36.000 Trying to do this podcast out here.

00:05:38.260 You know, where he decides

00:05:40.020 to go to places in

00:05:42.180 Israel that the audio doesn't work

00:05:44.260 and eventually they got a hold of an Assyrian and an

00:05:46.220 Armenian that helped them fix it.

00:05:47.780 We out here. The nukes are so bright

00:05:50.060 he has to wear shades. You know, to me

00:05:51.660 it's all about how you present

00:05:54.540 yourself.

00:05:56.240 If you present yourself that you don't care,

00:05:58.200 You're not going to care for the job.

00:05:59.380 Why would I hire you?

00:06:01.420 So I do think it's very, very important for people to be thinking about

00:06:05.320 how they're going to be presenting themselves while they're doing the job.

00:06:07.900 To all the small business owners, those in sales, those who are executives,

00:06:11.680 those who run their own businesses, next week, July 29th,

00:06:16.660 we're hosting our networking event at our property.

00:06:20.200 Show the entire tour of what we have.

00:06:23.000 You're going to see stuff that nobody sees.

00:06:25.380 I can't tell you how many times people say,

00:06:26.800 I want to really see what goes on over there at the company.

00:06:29.260 They think it's just a podcast.

00:06:30.680 Then they come to the headquarters.

00:06:31.740 They get a tour.

00:06:32.220 They're like, wait, you guys have this many engineers?

00:06:35.180 What do they do?

00:06:36.460 You guys have these many consultants?

00:06:38.240 This is the studio?

00:06:39.280 This is the – yes.
