00:00:01.760 Did you ever think you would make it?
00:00:04.220 I feel I'm so close I could take sweet victory.
00:00:07.640 I know this life meant for me.
00:00:10.740 Yeah, why would you bet on Goliath when we got Bet David?
00:00:14.580 Valuetainment, giving values contagious.
00:00:16.440 This world of entrepreneurs, we get no value to haters.
00:00:19.160 Now they run, homie, look what I become.
00:00:21.400 I'm the one.
00:00:22.480 I'm Patrick Bedevi, host of ITM, and today we're sitting down with Richard Wolff,
00:00:25.420 very, very prominent professor, Marxist professor,
00:00:28.200 who believes in socialism, devout socialists, love socialists,
00:00:31.860 hates capitalism, and this one got very heated.
00:00:35.700 Richard, thanks for being a guest on Valuetainment.
00:00:38.100 My pleasure.
00:00:38.900 Thanks for inviting me.
00:00:40.320 So, Richard, I mean, the short name for Richard is rich.
00:00:43.720 Why does rich hate rich people?
00:00:45.520 What is it with you, Rich?
00:00:46.460 I'm trying to figure you out.
00:00:48.340 Actually, I don't hate rich people.
00:00:49.980 Some of my best friends are rich people.
00:00:52.240 If you go to Harvard and Yale, you're surrounded by rich people,
00:00:55.780 even if I didn't want to have them as friends,
00:00:58.300 I would have had little choice in those places.
00:01:01.600 No, it's for me, the problem is not the individual.
00:01:04.160 The problem is the system.
00:01:06.080 And so I don't hate rich people at all.
00:01:08.440 I feel kind of sad for them because they've worked many cases quite hard
00:01:12.760 to get to be rich, imagining that that's what life is about,
00:01:16.500 and then they get very disappointed along the way,
00:01:19.400 and after three martinis, they tell me all about it.
00:01:21.980 So you think they're working too hard and they're not enjoying life,
00:01:25.660 and because of that, you know, they would be much happier if they worked less.
00:01:28.960 That's what you think.
00:01:30.300 Among other things, yeah, I think they'd be happier not only if they worked less,
00:01:34.520 but if the kind of work they did and the kind of relationships they have
00:01:38.260 with other people in that work were different,
00:01:40.980 they'd be an awful lot happier.
00:01:42.880 And that's not just my opinion.
00:01:44.320 That's what they've told me.
00:01:45.740 So let me ask you this.
00:01:47.100 A lot of times in life, like for myself,
00:01:49.200 obviously we were just talking about the painting behind me,
00:01:51.860 many times when you go back and you see somebody,
00:01:54.700 how they formed their opinions,
00:01:56.080 there is a certain trail on how they got to it, right?
00:01:58.840 How did you get to the opinions and beliefs that you have today?
00:02:03.020 If you can go back and talk about,
00:02:04.960 I was raised in a family, here's my mom and dad,
00:02:07.360 this is what happened to me at this age,
00:02:08.780 I kind of want to know the underlying motivation
00:02:11.020 that led you to believe in what you believe in today.
00:02:12.960 Well, sure, I can give you some of the milestones,
00:02:16.800 at least as best I've been able to make them out.
00:02:20.320 I grew up, I was born in Ohio in the Midwest.
00:02:23.900 My father worked in a steel factory in Youngstown, Ohio.
00:02:28.200 But when I was five years old, we moved east
00:02:31.280 and we settled in a suburb of New York City called New Rochelle,
00:02:35.640 you may know it.
00:02:37.060 And it was a commuter town.
00:02:40.020 My father took the train into New York City every day,
00:02:43.100 worked like really hard in the city,
00:02:46.580 came home in the evening.
00:02:48.160 Most of the people in New Rochelle were commuters like him.
00:02:52.920 And so the train took about 35 minutes
00:02:55.180 to get from New Rochelle into Grand Central Station.
00:02:58.980 And when I went with my father, very important,
00:03:01.760 we would pass on this train through Harlem,
00:03:06.700 that part of New York City.
00:03:09.240 And, you know, looking like as a youngster,
00:03:11.180 looking out the window,
00:03:12.220 it was very easy for me to see two things.
00:03:15.060 One, the people whose apartments, by the way,
00:03:18.020 were often no more than four, five, six feet
00:03:20.540 from where the train passed.
00:03:23.200 I could see into their apartments
00:03:25.180 because that's where the level of the train was.
00:03:27.660 And I could see two things.
00:03:29.060 One, that they were very poor.
00:03:31.520 And number two, that they were black.
00:03:34.000 These were very clear signs.
00:03:35.920 Even a little kid could figure that out.
00:03:38.380 And so I asked my father,
00:03:41.020 what is that?
00:03:42.320 Why are those people living like that?
00:03:45.560 And my father, who was mostly a distant father
00:03:48.820 and didn't give me all that much time,
00:03:52.060 somehow felt that this was an important question
00:03:55.520 and gave me a level of attention and concern
00:04:00.620 that I'm sure was the most valuable thing
00:04:03.540 about all of this.
00:04:05.040 But he also explained to me
00:04:06.620 that we live in a society
00:04:08.040 which is fundamentally unfair
00:04:10.760 to an awful lot of people.
00:04:13.480 And for example,
00:04:14.920 those poor people living crowded
00:04:17.140 in those not real nice looking apartments,
00:04:20.260 those are among the kinds of people
00:04:22.960 that are not well treated,
00:04:25.480 not given a fair shake in life.
00:04:28.660 And I listened to him the way a child does.
00:04:32.180 But, you know, I went with him fairly often.
00:04:34.180 He did take me-
00:04:34.820 How old were you at that time
00:04:35.800 when he told you this?
00:04:36.520 I'm curious.
00:04:36.920 I would say I was probably 9, 10, 11 years of age.
00:04:41.660 Very interesting.
00:04:42.700 Yeah.
00:04:43.620 And, you know,
00:04:45.220 I think I half understood
00:04:47.000 what he was talking about.
00:04:48.580 I loved the attention.
00:04:50.580 And so, you know,
00:04:52.200 the way children do,
00:04:53.340 the next time we went into New York,
00:04:54.780 I made sure at around the same time
00:04:56.780 to ask a variation of the same question
00:04:59.740 so that we would have this conversation,
00:05:02.040 which I very much enjoyed.
00:05:04.560 And then, you know,
00:05:05.260 as I grew older,
00:05:06.160 I began to get interested
00:05:07.480 in basically understanding,
00:05:10.460 you know,
00:05:10.940 the basic questions came to me.
00:05:13.100 Why are some nations rich
00:05:14.820 and other ones poor?
00:05:16.140 Why are some people rich
00:05:17.800 and others poor?
00:05:19.060 Why is the quality of life so different?
00:05:22.060 New Rochelle is a suburb
00:05:23.460 that has very poor
00:05:25.100 and very rich people
00:05:26.540 and a good number in between.
00:05:28.300 So I was constantly reinforced
00:05:30.480 in asking that kind of question.
00:05:33.420 Now, your pops,
00:05:34.420 who was your dad's inspiration?
00:05:37.360 Like, if I were to ask,
00:05:38.760 who was your dad's favorite president?
00:05:40.640 Would you say FDR?
00:05:42.060 Would you say,
00:05:43.100 who was somebody that he admired
00:05:45.060 and he liked?
00:05:47.020 I'm trying to think.
00:05:48.460 I think the first person in this country,
00:05:50.480 he was an immigrant.
00:05:51.260 Let me go back.
00:05:52.880 I was born in the United States.
00:05:54.840 Got it.
00:05:55.160 But neither my father
00:05:56.600 nor my mother were.
00:05:58.160 My father was French
00:05:59.500 and my mother was German.
00:06:01.740 So I grew up speaking French and German.
00:06:04.200 Nice.
00:06:04.440 I only learned English
00:06:05.540 when they put me in the kindergarten
00:06:07.000 and I had to speak it.
00:06:08.560 So the first person my father
00:06:11.340 I remember speaking highly of
00:06:13.280 was Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
00:06:15.940 That person loomed large
00:06:17.860 as a political leader
00:06:19.840 who my father felt
00:06:21.400 gave a damn about the average person,
00:06:24.680 did a lot of things
00:06:25.980 to help people
00:06:26.880 in a very hard time,
00:06:28.620 the Great Depression.
00:06:30.320 And I remember hearing him
00:06:32.860 talk very glowingly about FDR.
00:06:37.180 Now, when you think about that,
00:06:39.520 when you say FDR,
00:06:40.960 so for you,
00:06:41.940 you've had your belief system
00:06:43.720 since you were nine years old.
00:06:44.940 It's not like you're somebody
00:06:46.100 where you say,
00:06:47.000 I used to be a Republican.
00:06:48.720 My parents were Republicans
00:06:49.980 and I decided I realized
00:06:52.140 that's not the way to go.
00:06:53.460 So I went and studied
00:06:54.700 and then I became a socialist
00:06:55.900 because I met a professor.
00:06:57.500 You had this belief system
00:06:58.720 for 60-some years.
00:06:59.960 You've had it for a long time.
00:07:01.500 I've had the belief system
00:07:02.680 for a long time,
00:07:03.560 but I've also entertained
00:07:04.860 other belief systems.
00:07:06.760 Partly, again,
00:07:07.500 my father and my mother
00:07:08.880 were very open-minded.
00:07:10.380 They did not want me
00:07:11.520 to be a parrot.
00:07:12.640 They did not want me to parrot
00:07:13.940 even their perspectives.
00:07:15.940 So in my home,
00:07:17.300 there hangs a photograph
00:07:18.360 of my first political act,
00:07:21.160 which is standing
00:07:22.320 at the commuter train station
00:07:23.900 in New Rochelle, New York,
00:07:25.960 holding a sign that read,
00:07:27.980 I like Ike,
00:07:30.960 which was actually Eisenhower
00:07:32.980 in the Republican race
00:07:34.360 for president.
00:07:35.960 And, you know,
00:07:36.600 I had no problem doing that
00:07:38.480 with my friends
00:07:39.660 and my parents.
00:07:41.260 They did ask me questions
00:07:42.940 why I was doing it,
00:07:44.620 but I told them why
00:07:45.760 and that was my business
00:07:47.380 to determine.
00:07:48.640 So they've been very good
00:07:49.720 about that.
00:07:50.360 I've never felt,
00:07:52.100 and I did the same
00:07:52.860 with my two kids.
00:07:53.860 It's not my job
00:07:55.620 to shape your political ideas.
00:07:58.100 I'm sure some of that happens
00:07:59.360 no matter what we do.
00:08:00.620 Sure, of course.
00:08:01.580 But otherwise,
00:08:03.860 I don't think that's appropriate
00:08:06.240 any more than telling you
00:08:07.180 what religious affiliation
00:08:09.060 you ought to have
00:08:09.720 or anything like that.
00:08:10.640 Do your kids have
00:08:11.460 the same political beliefs
00:08:12.440 as you?
00:08:12.800 I don't know
00:08:14.880 if they're the same.
00:08:16.300 In the way America works,
00:08:18.060 they'd be left of center,
00:08:20.060 but they're not the same.
00:08:21.460 They're not the same.
00:08:21.740 So they're not as left
00:08:22.740 as you may be,
00:08:23.460 but they're left of center.
00:08:25.260 They're left of center.
00:08:26.720 My son,
00:08:27.700 much less left.
00:08:28.880 My daughter,
00:08:30.080 closer to me.
00:08:31.420 Okay.
00:08:32.440 How old were you
00:08:33.240 the first time
00:08:33.780 you read Communist Manifesto?
00:08:35.100 16 or 17.
00:08:39.660 So did a schoolteacher give it
00:08:41.280 or did your pops
00:08:42.040 or mom say read the book?
00:08:43.840 My father told me
00:08:45.820 this is an important book
00:08:47.640 for you to read.
00:08:49.040 Given your interests,
00:08:50.240 given your questions,
00:08:51.800 given our conversations,
00:08:54.740 you know,
00:08:55.060 here you're getting something
00:08:56.760 that is very European.
00:08:58.560 For someone who's been through
00:08:59.940 the European school system,
00:09:01.980 That's a weird thing.
00:09:03.220 The American system
00:09:04.900 was a continuing shock.
00:09:07.560 Yeah.
00:09:07.760 The fact that I,
00:09:08.980 get an example.
00:09:10.420 When I was young,
00:09:12.180 when I went to high school,
00:09:13.780 ninth grade,
00:09:14.600 the first time,
00:09:15.380 the way high school is set up
00:09:16.500 in New York State,
00:09:18.380 my father asked me
00:09:19.520 about my classes
00:09:20.700 in Latin and Greek.
00:09:23.860 So I answered my father,
00:09:26.140 there are no classes
00:09:27.340 in Latin and Greek
00:09:28.900 in my high school.
00:09:30.720 He didn't believe me.
00:09:32.540 He said,
00:09:33.320 oh, you must be mistaken.
00:09:34.400 And the next day,
00:09:35.480 he went into the school
00:09:36.660 with me,
00:09:38.320 barged right into
00:09:39.240 the principal's office.
00:09:41.300 He was polite
00:09:42.100 and all that,
00:09:42.800 but he said,
00:09:43.380 look,
00:09:43.540 I want to talk to you
00:09:44.460 about Latin and Greek.
00:09:46.480 And the principal
00:09:47.340 was a very nice guy.
00:09:48.800 The principal,
00:09:49.220 he brought me in there,
00:09:50.260 so I,
00:09:50.640 of course,
00:09:50.840 had to be witness
00:09:51.520 to all this.
00:09:52.900 The principal said,
00:09:54.240 we have never taught Greek
00:09:55.460 in this high school,
00:09:56.420 at least in the years
00:09:57.320 I've been the principal.
00:09:58.360 and we don't teach Latin
00:10:01.080 unless four or more parents,
00:10:05.260 four or more sets of parents
00:10:07.140 were to demand it.
00:10:09.320 Four or more?
00:10:10.500 Four or more.
00:10:11.780 If four or more want it,
00:10:14.520 we will get a part-time teacher
00:10:16.920 to offer it.
00:10:18.080 My father then went around,
00:10:20.660 found another three parents,
00:10:23.180 and I learned Latin in school,
00:10:25.420 but in a class of four students,
00:10:27.580 because there were only
00:10:29.080 that many parents.
00:10:30.540 I mean,
00:10:30.720 my father stopped
00:10:31.440 when he got four,
00:10:32.820 but that's how I learned.
00:10:34.460 My father was always
00:10:35.640 of the opinion
00:10:36.440 that what was offered to
00:10:39.240 and expected of
00:10:40.240 American high school students
00:10:41.880 was a scandal.
00:10:43.780 It was not serious.
00:10:45.200 For example,
00:10:46.880 he gave me Plato
00:10:47.940 and Aristotle to read.
00:10:49.920 He gave me St. Augustine
00:10:51.680 and Thomas Aquinas.
00:10:53.080 We're not Catholic.
00:10:54.240 It had nothing to do with that.
00:10:55.920 But he felt
00:10:56.940 that an educated human being
00:10:59.000 needs exposure
00:11:00.840 to these great works,
00:11:03.060 and he was aghast
00:11:05.120 that the high school
00:11:06.260 made no effort.
00:11:07.600 Now, let me ask you,
00:11:08.420 how old were you
00:11:08.960 the first time you read
00:11:09.740 Wealth of Nations
00:11:10.600 or Atlas Shrugged?
00:11:13.000 That was college.
00:11:14.120 That would have been
00:11:14.860 three or four years later.
00:11:16.980 I read Adam Smith
00:11:18.740 basically because
00:11:20.820 I had a class,
00:11:22.000 a freshman class
00:11:23.060 at Harvard
00:11:23.620 that gave me,
00:11:24.960 you know,
00:11:25.240 a few selected readings.
00:11:26.740 I don't know,
00:11:27.080 30, 40 pages worth of it.
00:11:29.480 I found that so intriguing
00:11:31.340 and so interesting
00:11:32.660 because it was my question.
00:11:34.760 Why are some,
00:11:35.660 you know,
00:11:35.980 why are wealthy,
00:11:37.000 the Wealth of Nations?
00:11:37.860 Why do some have it
00:11:38.660 and some don't?
00:11:39.560 Yeah.
00:11:39.920 It was a book
00:11:41.080 that entranced me.
00:11:42.480 I liked it.
00:11:43.840 I learned from it.
00:11:45.460 I've had respect
00:11:46.240 for that work
00:11:47.200 all my life
00:11:48.540 and right to this moment.
00:11:51.400 So that's when
00:11:52.600 I encountered that.
00:11:54.360 So when you read
00:11:55.500 Wealth of Nations
00:11:56.280 and you read
00:11:57.280 Atlas Shrugged
00:11:59.680 by Ayn Rand
00:12:00.400 both times
00:12:01.160 when you were in college,
00:12:02.840 did you at that point
00:12:04.300 start debating
00:12:05.100 the teacher?
00:12:05.820 Did you kind of
00:12:06.440 start defending
00:12:07.260 more philosophies
00:12:09.140 that were more
00:12:09.960 from the altruism
00:12:11.700 more from the Karl Marx side
00:12:13.340 or were you
00:12:13.720 were you a debate guy
00:12:14.860 from the moment
00:12:15.540 you started reading
00:12:16.220 these books
00:12:16.640 or was it more just like
00:12:17.540 oh wow interesting
00:12:18.240 let me see what this is about?
00:12:20.160 No, I think I was
00:12:21.200 more of a debater type.
00:12:22.760 I wanted to fight
00:12:24.160 but to be real honest
00:12:25.740 with you
00:12:26.320 and I'm assuming
00:12:27.380 that's what you want
00:12:28.480 my teachers
00:12:30.620 could not
00:12:32.040 or would not
00:12:33.360 answer
00:12:34.540 more and more
00:12:35.540 of my questions
00:12:36.420 as I became
00:12:37.140 a sophomore
00:12:37.680 and a junior
00:12:38.360 and a senior
00:12:38.940 in college
00:12:39.640 and I could tell
00:12:41.220 because these were
00:12:42.220 sometimes teachers
00:12:43.060 I liked
00:12:43.720 sometimes teachers
00:12:44.900 I didn't like
00:12:45.740 on a personal level
00:12:46.800 but I could see
00:12:48.360 that they couldn't
00:12:49.780 answer my questions
00:12:50.980 either
00:12:51.560 because they didn't
00:12:53.160 know
00:12:53.640 what it was
00:12:54.540 I was asking
00:12:55.340 or
00:12:56.720 they knew
00:12:58.100 but it was
00:12:59.580 frightening
00:13:00.040 or scaring
00:13:00.980 them
00:13:01.980 to go into it.
00:13:03.480 I could tell
00:13:04.320 in some cases
00:13:05.200 which of those
00:13:05.860 it was
00:13:06.420 in others
00:13:07.140 I just guessed
00:13:08.080 but the level
00:13:09.660 of discomfort
00:13:10.640 that my questions
00:13:11.980 would provoke
00:13:12.880 made me back off
00:13:15.040 just as a
00:13:15.660 I didn't want to
00:13:16.420 make these people's
00:13:17.300 lives unpleasant
00:13:18.220 as I say
00:13:19.120 some of these
00:13:19.680 were teachers
00:13:20.220 I liked
00:13:20.760 and I learned from
00:13:21.780 I didn't want to
00:13:22.840 be a pain
00:13:23.400 in their rear end
00:13:24.460 but I could see
00:13:26.000 that my questions
00:13:27.140 put them in a
00:13:28.140 very uncomfortable
00:13:29.480 place
00:13:30.180 so what I did
00:13:31.840 was
00:13:32.340 I didn't pursue it
00:13:34.440 I would ask a question
00:13:35.720 I tried to make it
00:13:37.340 worded in a way
00:13:38.640 that wasn't
00:13:39.180 confrontational
00:13:40.200 and then when I got
00:13:41.740 a very dissatisfying
00:13:43.260 answer
00:13:43.740 or no answer
00:13:44.620 at all
00:13:45.180 I would literally
00:13:46.960 and I mean this
00:13:47.680 I would run
00:13:48.660 to the library
00:13:49.780 at the end
00:13:50.860 of the class
00:13:51.620 bury myself
00:13:52.960 in the library
00:13:53.760 the way few
00:13:54.420 other students
00:13:55.100 did
00:13:55.540 and read
00:13:57.980 myself silly
00:13:59.120 trying to work
00:14:00.160 out
00:14:00.540 what a good
00:14:01.300 answer
00:14:01.840 to that
00:14:02.260 question
00:14:02.720 would have
00:14:03.440 been
00:14:03.860 that the
00:14:04.680 teacher
00:14:05.000 was unable
00:14:06.200 or unwilling
00:14:07.680 to do
00:14:08.760 so the opposite
00:14:09.900 answer of yours
00:14:11.100 not your
00:14:11.740 answer
00:14:12.200 so meaning
00:14:12.860 the answer
00:14:13.400 to the question
00:14:14.040 you were asking
00:14:14.760 as if
00:14:16.220 if the teacher
00:14:16.720 was to answer
00:14:17.280 your question
00:14:17.720 that they
00:14:18.040 didn't have
00:14:18.620 you'd go try
00:14:19.460 to find the
00:14:19.940 answer that
00:14:20.360 they should
00:14:20.940 have given
00:14:21.300 that's right
00:14:22.220 okay
00:14:22.720 exactly what
00:14:23.400 I tried to do
00:14:24.160 but to be
00:14:25.740 fair
00:14:26.100 I don't want
00:14:26.900 to misspeak
00:14:29.020 here
00:14:29.280 there were
00:14:29.900 also cases
00:14:30.800 where
00:14:31.460 the teacher
00:14:33.740 did give me
00:14:34.420 an answer
00:14:34.980 or kind of
00:14:35.640 dismissed
00:14:36.140 my question
00:14:37.000 that got me
00:14:38.120 even more
00:14:38.740 upset
00:14:39.100 and then I
00:14:39.780 went to
00:14:40.180 the library
00:14:40.900 to reinforce
00:14:42.220 my sense
00:14:43.540 that I had
00:14:45.340 a point
00:14:45.820 to make
00:14:46.300 here
00:14:46.600 I had
00:14:47.120 there was
00:14:47.720 some validity
00:14:48.360 to what
00:14:48.860 I was saying
00:14:49.640 and then I
00:14:50.540 would learn
00:14:51.120 that I was
00:14:51.680 wrong in
00:14:52.160 some areas
00:14:52.820 right in
00:14:53.360 others
00:14:53.740 but you know
00:14:55.220 you get
00:14:55.700 better educated
00:14:56.520 if you're
00:14:57.060 driven like
00:14:57.680 that
00:14:57.880 if something
00:14:58.320 is really
00:14:58.780 important to
00:14:59.500 you
00:14:59.740 you kind
00:15:00.460 of read
00:15:00.760 the article
00:15:01.320 or you
00:15:01.620 read the
00:15:02.060 book in
00:15:02.420 a different
00:15:02.820 way
00:15:03.320 from what
00:15:04.460 you do
00:15:04.800 if it's
00:15:05.140 just an
00:15:05.440 assignment
00:15:05.900 in a
00:15:06.280 course
00:15:06.640 you're an
00:15:07.160 April 1st
00:15:07.740 baby
00:15:08.020 I mean
00:15:08.340 it makes
00:15:08.940 sense
00:15:09.360 you know
00:15:09.680 as an
00:15:09.960 April 1st
00:15:10.400 my dad
00:15:10.760 is April
00:15:11.140 10th
00:15:11.680 and my
00:15:12.440 former COO
00:15:13.700 was April
00:15:14.300 12th
00:15:15.560 and my
00:15:15.820 best friend
00:15:16.340 from the
00:15:16.660 army is
00:15:17.000 April 9th
00:15:17.660 you guys
00:15:17.980 are wired
00:15:18.580 in a very
00:15:20.280 interesting way
00:15:21.100 I hire
00:15:21.720 April babies
00:15:22.760 because I love
00:15:23.360 them
00:15:23.440 you know
00:15:23.620 it's interesting
00:15:24.000 you say that
00:15:24.420 when I was
00:15:24.740 a kid
00:15:25.000 in Iran
00:15:25.480 my mom
00:15:26.580 and dad
00:15:26.820 would put
00:15:27.180 me in
00:15:27.480 Bible study
00:15:28.440 in Christian
00:15:29.260 Sunday school
00:15:30.100 and I would
00:15:31.040 always get
00:15:31.420 kicked out
00:15:31.820 of Sunday
00:15:32.200 school
00:15:32.620 and because
00:15:33.400 I would
00:15:33.680 ask the
00:15:34.020 weird
00:15:34.200 questions
00:15:34.620 I said
00:15:34.920 if God
00:15:35.200 loves us
00:15:35.580 so much
00:15:35.880 why do
00:15:36.120 we get
00:15:36.360 bombed
00:15:36.720 why do
00:15:36.980 we
00:15:37.200 so many
00:15:37.840 people
00:15:38.020 died
00:15:38.340 you know
00:15:38.580 and they
00:15:38.740 had a
00:15:38.920 hard time
00:15:39.300 with me
00:15:39.600 they would
00:15:39.800 say sir
00:15:40.140 you got
00:15:40.400 to keep
00:15:40.620 your son
00:15:40.960 out of
00:15:41.240 this
00:15:41.380 because
00:15:41.600 he's
00:15:41.800 confusing
00:15:42.200 the
00:15:42.380 other
00:15:42.540 kids
00:15:42.940 so I
00:15:43.620 was an
00:15:43.820 atheist
00:15:44.100 for 25
00:15:44.600 years
00:15:44.880 of my
00:15:45.080 life
00:15:45.260 but let's
00:15:45.580 let's
00:15:45.800 go back
00:15:46.140 to a
00:15:46.600 part
00:15:46.880 that you
00:15:47.160 brought
00:15:47.400 up
00:15:47.660 you said
00:15:48.560 your dad
00:15:49.180 was a
00:15:49.720 distant
00:15:50.120 father
00:15:50.560 meaning
00:15:50.820 he did
00:15:51.160 his best
00:15:51.540 but he
00:15:51.800 was a
00:15:52.040 hard worker
00:15:53.240 so when
00:15:54.120 you did
00:15:54.480 drive up
00:15:54.960 to Harlem
00:15:55.400 with him
00:15:55.800 you used
00:15:56.160 that as
00:15:56.400 an
00:15:56.520 opportunity
00:15:56.980 to ask
00:15:57.700 more
00:15:58.320 questions
00:15:58.860 looking
00:15:59.800 back
00:16:00.560 did you
00:16:01.600 did a
00:16:02.380 part of
00:16:02.880 your
00:16:03.020 motivation
00:16:03.580 come from
00:16:04.040 a place
00:16:04.580 where you
00:16:04.880 read a
00:16:05.280 book
00:16:05.480 and you
00:16:05.800 said
00:16:06.100 you know
00:16:06.940 what
00:16:07.140 if my
00:16:07.500 dad
00:16:07.860 didn't
00:16:08.260 have to
00:16:08.620 work
00:16:08.860 as
00:16:09.060 hard
00:16:09.260 as
00:16:09.420 he
00:16:09.580 did
00:16:09.980 I
00:16:10.600 probably
00:16:11.100 would
00:16:11.380 have
00:16:11.480 been
00:16:11.600 able
00:16:11.740 to
00:16:11.900 spend
00:16:12.080 more
00:16:12.320 time
00:16:12.640 with
00:16:12.840 him
00:16:12.940 did
00:16:13.140 you
00:16:13.240 ever
00:16:13.540 process
00:16:14.020 it
00:16:14.200 that
00:16:14.400 way
00:16:14.640 or
00:16:14.820 no
00:16:15.100 yes
00:16:15.820 I
00:16:16.000 did
00:16:16.240 I
00:16:16.780 was
00:16:17.220 aware
00:16:17.860 I
00:16:19.860 was
00:16:20.040 aware
00:16:20.480 I
00:16:20.760 don't
00:16:21.080 remember
00:16:21.420 whether
00:16:21.660 this
00:16:21.940 happened
00:16:22.240 to
00:16:22.440 me
00:16:22.640 this
00:16:22.880 recognition
00:16:23.460 that
00:16:23.720 you
00:16:23.860 point
00:16:24.160 to
00:16:24.420 in
00:16:24.920 college
00:16:25.380 or
00:16:25.800 in
00:16:26.000 graduate
00:16:26.360 school
00:16:26.820 but
00:16:27.080 one
00:16:27.620 or
00:16:27.760 the
00:16:27.920 other
00:16:28.300 I
00:16:28.900 had
00:16:29.120 a
00:16:29.300 very
00:16:29.920 very
00:16:30.520 clear
00:16:31.000 sense
00:16:31.560 and
00:16:32.500 I
00:16:32.640 became
00:16:33.020 a
00:16:33.240 little
00:16:33.460 bit
00:16:33.860 psychologically
00:16:35.140 self
00:16:35.880 aware
00:16:36.300 I
00:16:37.040 should
00:16:37.240 put
00:16:37.480 in
00:16:37.640 parentheses
00:16:38.180 my
00:16:38.980 wife
00:16:39.360 is
00:16:39.540 a
00:16:39.720 psychotherapist
00:16:40.660 and
00:16:41.160 my
00:16:41.380 daughter
00:16:41.720 is
00:16:42.100 also
00:16:42.700 a
00:16:43.240 psychotherapist
00:16:43.880 beautiful
00:16:44.260 so
00:16:44.720 I
00:16:44.880 am
00:16:45.080 surrounded
00:16:45.580 by
00:16:46.060 I've
00:16:46.640 been
00:16:46.800 tutored
00:16:47.200 in
00:16:47.460 psychological
00:16:48.060 understanding
00:16:49.220 for many
00:16:50.040 many
00:16:50.320 years
00:16:50.840 by two
00:16:51.340 people
00:16:51.680 who are
00:16:52.080 very
00:16:52.300 close
00:16:52.640 to
00:16:52.800 me
00:16:52.980 but
00:16:53.440 in
00:16:53.620 any
00:16:53.860 case
00:16:54.200 yes
00:16:54.940 I
00:16:55.240 had
00:16:55.500 a
00:16:55.700 sense
00:16:56.080 that
00:16:56.760 my
00:16:57.000 father
00:16:57.620 as
00:16:58.900 an
00:16:59.060 immigrant
00:16:59.380 here
00:16:59.740 in
00:16:59.860 the
00:16:59.960 United
00:17:00.240 States
00:17:00.840 had
00:17:01.740 had
00:17:02.000 to
00:17:02.180 work
00:17:02.440 very
00:17:02.860 very
00:17:03.120 hard
00:17:03.560 all
00:17:04.560 of
00:17:04.720 his
00:17:04.900 education
00:17:05.500 in
00:17:05.840 Europe
00:17:06.160 all
00:17:06.640 of
00:17:06.780 his
00:17:06.960 connections
00:17:07.560 all
00:17:08.480 of
00:17:08.600 that
00:17:08.760 was
00:17:08.980 gone
00:17:09.520 all
00:17:10.040 of
00:17:10.160 that
00:17:10.300 was
00:17:10.480 left
00:17:10.760 behind
00:17:11.320 when
00:17:11.580 he
00:17:11.720 came
00:17:12.000 here
00:17:12.380 he
00:17:12.980 really
00:17:13.240 had
00:17:13.480 to
00:17:13.660 start
00:17:13.980 from
00:17:14.360 nothing
00:17:14.760 he
00:17:16.240 worked
00:17:16.680 his
00:17:17.000 rear
00:17:17.360 end
00:17:17.680 off
00:17:18.040 I
00:17:18.660 do
00:17:18.860 believe
00:17:19.340 not
00:17:19.620 to
00:17:19.780 be
00:17:19.920 dramatic
00:17:20.340 that
00:17:21.080 the
00:17:21.260 heart
00:17:21.460 attack
00:17:21.780 that
00:17:21.980 finally
00:17:22.360 killed
00:17:22.740 him
00:17:22.940 was
00:17:23.480 not
00:17:23.820 unconnected
00:17:24.780 to
00:17:24.960 the
00:17:25.180 anxieties
00:17:25.940 of
00:17:26.260 making
00:17:26.600 it
00:17:26.840 here
00:17:27.180 to
00:17:27.620 the
00:17:27.780 insufficiency
00:17:28.480 of
00:17:28.800 money
00:17:29.300 so
00:17:29.940 yes
00:17:30.280 I
00:17:30.480 had
00:17:30.640 a
00:17:30.840 personal
00:17:31.320 way
00:17:31.860 of
00:17:32.380 feeling
00:17:32.700 that
00:17:32.980 this
00:17:33.260 system
00:17:33.780 had
00:17:34.260 not
00:17:34.580 treated
00:17:34.940 my
00:17:35.300 father
00:17:35.820 or
00:17:36.420 my
00:17:36.700 mother
00:17:37.100 very
00:17:38.680 well
00:17:39.120 we
00:17:39.520 were
00:17:39.680 always
00:17:40.020 as
00:17:40.240 a
00:17:40.380 family
00:17:40.720 grateful
00:17:41.260 that
00:17:41.920 they
00:17:42.100 could
00:17:42.280 leave
00:17:42.620 Europe
00:17:42.940 and
00:17:43.240 survive
00:17:43.740 and
00:17:43.960 come
00:17:44.200 here
00:17:44.520 and
00:17:44.940 my
00:17:45.120 parents
00:17:45.520 had
00:17:46.060 an
00:17:46.580 appreciation
00:17:47.200 for
00:17:48.120 the
00:17:48.280 United
00:17:48.600 States
00:17:49.160 because
00:17:49.840 it
00:17:50.040 had
00:17:50.220 saved
00:17:50.580 them
00:17:50.860 the
00:17:51.040 way
00:17:51.200 many
00:17:51.500 others
00:17:51.900 in
00:17:52.120 their
00:17:52.260 family
00:17:52.660 had
00:17:52.900 not
00:17:53.140 been
00:17:53.360 saved
00:17:53.740 but
00:17:54.400 having
00:17:54.680 said
00:17:55.000 that
00:17:55.280 and
00:17:55.460 not
00:17:55.680 denying
00:17:56.160 it
00:17:56.460 the
00:17:57.260 level
00:17:57.500 of
00:17:57.660 education
00:17:58.300 and
00:17:58.760 the
00:17:58.940 level
00:17:59.180 of
00:17:59.420 work
00:17:59.700 imposed
00:18:00.200 on
00:18:00.440 people
00:18:00.820 to
00:18:01.360 even
00:18:01.600 scratch
00:18:02.320 out
00:18:02.780 a
00:18:03.500 basic
00:18:03.880 living
00:18:04.320 I
00:18:06.240 think
00:18:06.480 it
00:18:06.620 killed
00:18:09.120 it
00:18:09.320 made
00:18:09.580 him
00:18:09.820 less
00:18:10.300 productive
00:18:11.200 to
00:18:11.940 this
00:18:12.260 country
00:18:12.700 than
00:18:13.140 he
00:18:13.300 could
00:18:13.580 have
00:18:13.820 been
00:18:14.180 if
00:18:14.700 he
00:18:14.860 were
00:18:15.120 not
00:18:15.460 treated
00:18:15.780 the
00:18:16.020 way
00:18:16.180 he
00:18:16.380 had
00:18:16.640 been
00:18:16.940 how
00:18:17.420 old
00:18:17.680 were
00:18:17.840 you
00:18:17.940 when
00:18:18.060 he
00:18:18.180 passed
00:18:18.440 away
00:18:18.780 let
00:18:20.780 me
00:18:20.900 see
00:18:21.100 he
00:18:21.320 died
00:18:21.600 in
00:18:21.760 1931
00:18:23.540 you
00:18:24.500 oh
00:18:24.720 you
00:18:24.940 were
00:18:25.100 31
00:18:25.420 so
00:18:25.640 you
00:18:25.780 were
00:18:25.940 young
00:18:26.240 when
00:18:26.420 you
00:18:26.540 passed
00:18:26.820 away
00:18:27.080 early
00:18:28.000 okay
00:18:28.340 I
00:18:28.700 can
00:18:28.880 see
00:18:29.320 how
00:18:29.440 that
00:18:29.560 can
00:18:29.680 be
00:18:29.800 a
00:18:29.900 painful
00:18:30.100 experience
00:18:30.560 but
00:18:31.380 let
00:18:31.760 me
00:18:31.840 ask
00:18:32.060 you
00:18:32.160 this
00:18:32.340 would
00:18:32.680 you
00:18:32.820 consider
00:18:33.260 yourself
00:18:33.600 a
00:18:33.740 hard
00:18:33.920 working
00:18:34.200 man
00:18:34.460 would
00:18:34.660 you
00:18:34.760 say
00:18:34.900 you're
00:18:35.040 a
00:18:35.080 hard
00:18:35.220 working
00:18:35.440 person
00:18:35.860 yes
00:18:36.600 I
00:18:36.840 am
00:18:37.020 referred
00:18:37.360 to
00:18:37.600 by
00:18:37.800 most
00:18:38.060 of
00:18:38.180 the
00:18:38.300 people
00:18:38.540 who
00:18:38.720 know
00:18:38.940 me
00:18:39.200 as
00:18:39.600 a
00:18:39.760 workaholic
00:18:40.440 so
00:18:41.140 if
00:18:41.340 you're
00:18:41.580 a
00:18:41.720 workaholic
00:18:42.500 maybe
00:18:43.540 because
00:18:44.240 your
00:18:44.460 father
00:18:44.840 sounds
00:18:45.180 like
00:18:45.380 my
00:18:45.580 father
00:18:45.940 okay
00:18:46.500 my
00:18:47.420 dad
00:18:47.860 in
00:18:48.280 Iran
00:18:48.760 ran
00:18:49.300 a
00:18:49.480 he
00:18:50.100 ran
00:18:50.320 Nivea
00:18:51.220 and
00:18:51.380 Max
00:18:51.680 Factor
00:18:51.980 I
00:18:52.160 don't
00:18:52.260 know
00:18:52.340 if
00:18:52.440 you're
00:18:52.580 familiar
00:18:52.820 with
00:18:53.020 those
00:18:53.200 two
00:18:53.340 you
00:18:53.440 don't
00:18:53.580 look
00:18:53.780 like
00:18:53.940 somebody
00:18:54.240 that
00:18:54.440 puts
00:19:03.600 like
00:19:03.960 comparable
00:19:04.520 to
00:19:04.840 $100,000
00:19:05.480 a month
00:19:06.420 in
00:19:06.700 Iran
00:19:07.020 and
00:19:07.260 he
00:19:07.500 went
00:19:07.740 from
00:19:07.980 Iran
00:19:08.500 when
00:19:08.760 the
00:19:08.900 war
00:19:09.080 happened
00:19:09.260 six
00:19:10.120 weeks
00:19:10.360 later
00:19:10.560 we
00:19:10.720 escaped
00:19:11.140 my
00:19:11.360 mother
00:19:11.640 and
00:19:11.800 I
00:19:12.000 and
00:19:12.740 my
00:19:12.880 sister
00:19:13.140 we
00:19:13.300 went
00:19:13.440 to
00:19:13.560 Germany
00:19:13.840 lived
00:19:14.080 out
00:19:14.220 a
00:19:14.300 refugee
00:19:14.620 camp
00:19:14.980 and
00:19:15.080 we
00:19:15.260 came
00:19:15.500 out
00:19:15.680 here
00:19:15.880 he
00:19:16.020 had
00:19:16.140 heart
00:19:16.600 attacks
00:19:16.900 after
00:19:17.080 heart
00:19:17.300 attacks
00:19:17.720 and
00:19:18.500 he
00:19:18.600 worked
00:19:18.840 at
00:19:19.000 a
00:19:19.160 99
00:19:19.660 cent
00:19:20.080 store
00:19:20.460 for
00:19:20.740 15
00:19:21.440 years
00:19:21.780 in
00:19:21.980 Inglewood
00:19:22.520 California
00:19:23.200 okay
00:19:23.700 right
00:19:24.140 right
00:19:24.620 and
00:19:25.040 you
00:19:25.280 know
00:19:25.420 how
00:19:25.540 it
00:19:25.660 is
00:19:33.600 one
00:19:35.100 of
00:19:35.220 the
00:19:35.340 things
00:19:35.560 that
00:19:35.680 I
00:19:35.800 saw
00:19:36.020 if
00:19:36.140 my
00:19:36.320 dad
00:19:36.540 was
00:19:36.740 born
00:19:37.040 here
00:19:37.460 my
00:19:37.800 dad
00:19:38.000 would
00:19:38.180 have
00:19:38.280 been
00:19:38.400 a
00:19:38.560 very
00:19:38.840 successful
00:19:39.540 man
00:19:39.920 but
00:19:40.220 sometimes
00:19:40.620 one
00:19:40.900 of
00:19:41.180 the
00:19:41.220 best
00:19:41.400 things
00:19:41.560 he
00:19:41.680 did
00:19:41.800 is
00:19:41.920 bringing
00:19:42.160 me
00:19:42.380 here
00:19:42.580 so
00:19:42.820 maybe
00:19:43.960 your
00:19:44.260 dad's
00:19:44.880 example
00:19:45.420 to
00:19:45.720 you
00:19:45.960 is
00:19:46.200 why
00:19:46.420 you
00:19:46.740 ended
00:19:47.100 up
00:19:47.280 becoming
00:19:47.600 who
00:19:47.800 you
00:19:47.960 are
00:19:48.140 today
00:19:48.540 you
00:19:48.880 know
00:19:49.000 by
00:19:49.160 having
00:19:49.400 a
00:19:49.560 work
00:19:49.780 ethic
00:19:49.960 being
00:19:50.180 passed
00:19:50.480 down
00:19:50.660 to
00:19:50.800 you
00:19:51.060 where
00:19:51.600 you
00:19:51.800 yeah
00:19:52.580 where
00:19:52.820 you
00:19:52.980 just
00:19:53.280 his
00:19:53.740 legacy
00:19:54.060 is
00:19:54.260 continuing
00:19:54.640 through
00:19:54.900 you
00:19:55.440 yep
00:19:55.840 and
00:19:56.620 I
00:19:56.760 think
00:19:56.980 that
00:19:57.200 that's
00:19:57.520 something
00:19:57.820 that
00:19:58.120 happened
00:19:58.520 long
00:19:58.940 ago
00:19:59.340 and
00:19:59.940 happens
00:20:00.300 on
00:20:00.500 very
00:20:00.800 deep
00:20:01.240 levels
00:20:01.660 that
00:20:02.020 you're
00:20:02.240 only
00:20:02.600 barely
00:20:03.120 aware
00:20:03.560 of
00:20:03.940 and
00:20:04.360 that
00:20:04.520 you
00:20:04.660 certainly
00:20:05.020 cannot
00:20:05.400 control
00:20:05.980 or at
00:20:06.340 least
00:20:06.520 I
00:20:06.760 can't
00:20:07.240 sure
00:20:07.500 but
00:20:08.060 I'm
00:20:08.260 not
00:20:08.420 upset
00:20:08.740 about
00:20:09.020 it
00:20:09.160 I
00:20:09.240 really
00:20:09.460 like
00:20:09.740 my
00:20:09.960 father
00:20:10.340 and
00:20:10.600 I'm
00:20:10.780 grateful
00:20:11.160 for
00:20:11.480 all
00:20:11.800 the
00:20:11.960 things
00:20:12.280 that
00:20:12.460 he
00:20:12.620 did
00:20:13.160 for
00:20:13.400 me
00:20:13.580 so
00:20:14.280 now
00:20:14.720 let's
00:20:14.960 go
00:20:15.100 into
00:20:15.300 philosophy
00:20:15.740 this
00:20:15.940 was
00:20:16.080 very
00:20:16.260 helpful
00:20:16.480 because
00:20:16.720 this
00:20:16.880 kind
00:20:17.060 of
00:20:17.120 gave
00:20:17.260 me
00:20:17.360 an
00:20:17.460 idea
00:20:17.680 about
00:20:17.860 your
00:20:18.020 background
00:20:18.340 parents
00:20:18.780 and
00:20:18.980 the
00:20:19.340 viewer
00:20:19.600 can
00:20:19.820 also
00:20:20.180 get
00:20:20.760 an
00:20:20.900 idea
00:20:21.100 about
00:20:21.280 where
00:20:21.460 you're
00:20:21.620 at
00:20:21.720 and
00:20:21.840 how
00:20:21.980 you
00:20:22.060 came
00:20:22.200 to
00:20:22.320 a
00:20:22.420 conclusion
00:20:22.700 so
00:20:23.000 you
00:20:24.000 say
00:20:24.300 why
00:20:24.700 the
00:20:24.920 question
00:20:25.240 why
00:20:25.560 are
00:20:25.760 some
00:20:26.000 people
00:20:26.100 I've
00:20:26.540 asked
00:20:26.720 this
00:20:26.880 question
00:20:27.120 myself
00:20:27.420 when
00:20:27.600 I
00:20:27.680 was
00:20:27.800 a
00:20:27.920 kid
00:20:28.100 but
00:20:28.380 you
00:20:28.540 you
00:20:28.760 brought
00:20:29.300 it
00:20:29.440 up
00:20:29.560 already
00:20:29.840 three
00:20:30.080 times
00:20:30.400 now
00:20:30.560 so
00:20:30.720 why
00:20:30.860 don't
00:20:30.940 we
00:20:31.040 start
00:20:31.280 there
00:20:31.520 why
00:20:32.420 are
00:20:32.760 some
00:20:33.120 people
00:20:33.480 rich
00:20:33.940 and
00:20:34.280 poor
00:20:46.720 could
00:20:47.420 have
00:20:47.740 any
00:20:48.100 other
00:20:48.560 outcome
00:20:49.320 than
00:20:49.900 to
00:20:50.120 make
00:20:50.340 a
00:20:50.500 minority
00:20:51.000 rich
00:20:51.960 and
00:20:52.260 a
00:20:52.380 majority
00:20:52.880 poor
00:20:53.620 I
00:20:53.900 mean
00:20:54.340 it's
00:20:54.620 a
00:20:54.760 little
00:20:54.940 bit
00:20:55.240 like
00:20:56.660 sort
00:20:57.260 of
00:20:57.380 understanding
00:20:58.080 the
00:20:58.360 history
00:20:59.180 of
00:20:59.420 economic
00:20:59.900 systems
00:21:00.480 the
00:21:01.220 major
00:21:01.560 three
00:21:01.900 economic
00:21:02.420 systems
00:21:02.920 over
00:21:03.160 the
00:21:03.340 last
00:21:03.640 I
00:21:03.840 don't
00:21:04.000 know
00:21:04.220 several
00:21:04.620 thousand
00:21:05.100 years
00:21:05.660 at least
00:21:06.440 I'm
00:21:06.660 talking
00:21:07.000 now
00:21:07.220 you
00:21:07.360 know
00:21:07.440 Western
00:21:07.800 Europe
00:21:08.140 North
00:21:08.420 America
00:21:08.800 and so
00:21:09.160 on
00:21:09.440 the
00:21:10.620 major
00:21:10.980 three
00:21:11.460 were
00:21:11.780 slavery
00:21:12.280 feudalism
00:21:13.000 and
00:21:13.160 then
00:21:13.340 capitalism
00:21:13.880 and
00:21:15.340 there's
00:21:15.560 something
00:21:15.880 all
00:21:16.100 three
00:21:16.380 of
00:21:16.720 have
00:21:16.920 in
00:21:17.080 common
00:21:17.440 a
00:21:18.120 small
00:21:18.420 number
00:21:18.760 of
00:21:18.940 people
00:21:19.220 sit
00:21:19.500 at
00:21:19.620 the
00:21:19.760 top
00:21:20.040 of
00:21:20.180 this
00:21:20.380 society
00:21:20.920 in
00:21:21.700 slavery
00:21:22.100 it's
00:21:22.420 the
00:21:22.560 master
00:21:22.940 in
00:21:23.200 feudalism
00:21:23.760 it's
00:21:23.960 the
00:21:24.120 lord
00:21:24.540 and
00:21:24.840 in
00:21:25.060 capitalism
00:21:25.480 it's
00:21:25.900 the
00:21:26.040 employer
00:21:26.580 and
00:21:27.400 a
00:21:27.540 vast
00:21:27.780 majority
00:21:28.280 of
00:21:28.580 people
00:21:28.880 are
00:21:29.260 in
00:21:29.540 the
00:21:29.820 other
00:21:30.260 position
00:21:30.940 they're
00:21:31.640 the
00:21:31.820 serf
00:21:32.280 or
00:21:32.780 the
00:21:32.980 slave
00:21:33.520 or
00:21:34.020 the
00:21:34.220 employee
00:21:34.860 and
00:21:36.000 it
00:21:36.160 shouldn't
00:21:36.440 surprise
00:21:36.920 you
00:21:37.120 that
00:21:37.280 if
00:21:37.400 you
00:21:37.500 look
00:21:37.640 at
00:21:37.760 slavery
00:21:38.220 the
00:21:38.700 masters
00:21:39.100 are
00:21:39.380 rich
00:21:39.580 and
00:21:39.760 powerful
00:21:40.200 and
00:21:40.600 the
00:21:40.760 slaves
00:21:41.240 by
00:21:41.620 and
00:21:41.780 large
00:21:42.200 are
00:21:42.680 not
00:21:43.040 and
00:21:43.600 if
00:21:43.720 you
00:21:43.780 look
00:21:43.940 at
00:21:44.060 feudalism
00:21:44.740 the
00:21:45.280 lords
00:21:45.660 are
00:21:45.860 rich
00:21:46.060 and
00:21:46.220 powerful
00:21:46.680 and
00:21:47.040 by
00:21:47.300 and
00:21:47.480 large
00:21:47.860 the
00:21:48.120 serfs
00:21:48.580 are
00:21:48.880 not
00:21:49.260 and
00:21:50.040 we
00:21:50.200 live
00:21:50.460 in
00:21:50.600 a
00:21:50.800 capitalist
00:21:51.280 system
00:21:51.840 where
00:21:52.300 by
00:21:53.240 and
00:21:53.440 large
00:21:53.940 the
00:21:54.440 employers
00:21:55.060 do
00:21:55.500 really
00:21:55.960 well
00:21:56.420 relatively
00:21:57.140 and
00:21:57.780 the
00:21:57.960 employees
00:21:58.680 well
00:21:59.280 I'll
00:21:59.480 be
00:21:59.620 nice
00:22:00.000 not
00:22:00.400 so
00:22:00.660 much
00:22:01.120 and
00:22:01.900 in
00:22:02.040 order
00:22:02.220 for
00:22:02.440 us
00:22:02.620 not
00:22:02.800 to
00:22:02.960 have
00:22:03.260 the
00:22:03.500 split
00:22:03.840 between
00:22:04.300 rich
00:22:04.660 and
00:22:04.940 poor
00:22:05.360 whether
00:22:06.200 it's
00:22:06.500 on
00:22:06.640 the
00:22:06.780 level
00:22:07.060 of
00:22:11.240 small
00:22:11.460 community
00:22:12.040 we
00:22:12.860 would
00:22:13.080 have
00:22:13.340 to
00:22:13.580 confront
00:22:14.380 whether
00:22:15.380 the
00:22:15.620 effort
00:22:16.000 to
00:22:16.260 overcome
00:22:17.020 the
00:22:17.500 gap
00:22:18.580 between
00:22:19.000 rich
00:22:19.340 and
00:22:19.500 poor
00:22:19.840 is
00:22:20.780 a
00:22:20.980 reasonable
00:22:21.480 objective
00:22:22.200 if
00:22:23.220 you
00:22:23.400 abstract
00:22:23.920 from
00:22:24.420 the
00:22:24.620 economic
00:22:25.160 system
00:22:25.900 that
00:22:26.740 basically
00:22:27.220 produces
00:22:27.860 those
00:22:28.260 things
00:22:28.480 that's
00:22:28.740 why
00:22:28.900 I
00:22:29.060 said
00:22:29.220 at
00:22:29.340 the
00:22:29.460 beginning
00:22:29.760 when
00:22:30.300 you
00:22:30.420 asked
00:22:30.660 me
00:22:30.800 the
00:22:30.940 question
00:22:31.180 do
00:22:31.320 I
00:22:31.460 hate
00:22:31.660 rich
00:22:31.900 people
00:22:32.200 no
00:22:32.720 I
00:22:33.380 know
00:22:33.740 they
00:22:34.060 end
00:22:34.480 up
00:22:34.800 like
00:22:35.620 people
00:22:35.980 like
00:22:36.300 me
00:22:36.520 who
00:22:36.680 come
00:22:36.900 from
00:22:37.120 modest
00:22:37.480 circumstances
00:22:38.300 very
00:22:39.100 hard
00:22:39.440 not
00:22:39.640 to
00:22:39.820 conclude
00:22:40.200 as
00:22:40.400 you
00:22:40.520 go
00:22:40.680 through
00:22:40.900 life
00:22:41.320 okay
00:22:41.880 I
00:22:42.240 see
00:22:42.580 now
00:22:43.100 that
00:22:43.580 there
00:22:43.740 are
00:22:43.860 rich
00:22:44.080 people
00:22:44.420 and
00:22:44.620 poor
00:22:44.860 people
00:22:45.280 and
00:22:45.780 it
00:22:45.940 isn't
00:22:46.180 hard
00:22:46.440 for
00:22:46.640 me
00:22:46.760 to
00:22:46.920 tell
00:22:47.140 you
00:22:47.360 which
00:22:47.800 I'd
00:22:48.080 rather
00:22:48.340 be
00:22:48.800 I'd
00:22:49.760 rather
00:22:50.020 be
00:22:50.400 there
00:22:51.040 than
00:22:51.360 over
00:22:51.620 there
00:22:52.120 but
00:22:52.640 the
00:22:52.820 problem
00:22:53.140 is
00:22:53.480 there
00:22:53.800 aren't
00:22:54.100 enough
00:22:54.480 theirs
00:22:55.260 for
00:22:56.080 everybody
00:22:56.480 who
00:22:56.700 feels
00:22:57.060 that
00:22:57.320 way
00:22:57.560 to
00:22:57.760 get
00:22:58.040 to
00:22:58.240 that
00:22:58.520 point
00:22:58.960 and
00:22:59.740 it's
00:22:59.920 a
00:23:00.100 very
00:23:00.420 sad
00:23:01.240 reality
00:23:01.940 that
00:23:02.620 is
00:23:02.800 hard
00:23:03.380 for
00:23:03.660 people
00:23:04.040 to
00:23:04.280 come
00:23:04.580 to
00:23:04.840 terms
00:23:05.320 with
00:23:05.700 which
00:23:06.340 is
00:23:06.500 why
00:23:06.780 people
00:23:07.120 like
00:23:07.540 Ayn Rand
00:23:08.400 can
00:23:08.880 be
00:23:09.160 popular
00:23:09.780 because
00:23:10.740 she
00:23:11.020 presents
00:23:11.520 an
00:23:11.800 idea
00:23:12.460 that
00:23:13.000 suggests
00:23:13.680 oh
00:23:14.020 we
00:23:14.260 could
00:23:14.540 all
00:23:15.300 do
00:23:15.660 this
00:23:16.200 and
00:23:17.480 you
00:23:17.640 don't
00:23:17.840 believe
00:23:18.140 that
00:23:18.480 not
00:23:19.080 for
00:23:19.360 one
00:23:20.040 minute
00:23:20.860 gosh
00:23:21.500 Richard
00:23:22.060 come
00:23:22.640 on
00:23:22.960 okay
00:23:23.240 so
00:23:23.560 let's
00:23:23.900 let's
00:23:24.160 talk
00:23:24.340 about
00:23:24.500 a couple
00:23:24.800 things
00:23:25.140 here
00:23:25.300 that
00:23:25.420 you
00:23:25.540 brought
00:23:25.740 up
00:23:25.860 and
00:23:25.960 I've
00:23:26.120 watched
00:23:26.400 your
00:23:27.420 debates
00:23:27.880 I've
00:23:28.200 watched
00:23:28.440 your
00:23:28.780 different
00:23:29.820 things
00:23:30.120 that
00:23:30.240 you've
00:23:30.420 done
00:23:30.520 so
00:23:30.700 you
00:23:30.840 said
00:23:31.000 slavery
00:23:31.400 feudalism
00:23:32.020 and
00:23:32.160 capitalism
00:23:32.560 okay
00:23:32.940 so
00:23:33.140 slavery
00:23:33.560 and
00:23:33.780 feudalism
00:23:34.320 versus
00:23:34.560 capitalism
00:23:35.140 slavery
00:23:36.440 and
00:23:36.700 feudalism
00:23:37.160 have
00:23:37.400 one
00:23:38.440 underlying
00:23:40.060 difference
00:23:42.260 between
00:23:42.680 capitalism
00:23:43.220 because
00:23:43.600 in
00:23:43.840 feudalism
00:23:44.420 and
00:23:44.640 slavery
00:23:45.080 you
00:23:45.660 don't
00:23:45.840 have
00:23:46.080 a
00:23:46.220 choice
00:23:46.600 there
00:23:47.000 are
00:23:47.200 no
00:23:47.380 choices
00:23:47.920 you
00:23:48.700 know
00:23:48.820 they
00:23:49.060 tell
00:23:49.340 you
00:23:49.500 what
00:23:49.700 to
00:23:49.840 do
00:23:49.960 and
00:23:50.160 you
00:23:50.320 better
00:23:50.740 do
00:23:51.080 it
00:23:51.380 in
00:23:52.160 capitalism
00:23:52.740 they
00:23:53.620 tell
00:23:53.880 you
00:23:54.040 what
00:23:54.240 to
00:23:54.400 do
00:23:54.540 and
00:23:54.680 you
00:23:54.780 have
00:23:54.980 a
00:23:55.120 choice
00:23:55.380 you
00:23:55.520 can
00:23:55.700 say
00:23:55.920 screw
00:23:56.240 you
00:23:56.460 I'm
00:23:56.660 leaving
00:23:57.000 you
00:23:57.240 I
00:23:57.440 resign
00:23:57.980 you
00:23:58.780 know
00:23:58.980 a lot
00:23:59.580 of
00:23:59.700 times
00:23:59.920 people
00:24:00.200 think
00:24:00.640 just
00:24:03.560 they're
00:24:04.420 such
00:24:04.860 a
00:24:05.200 powerful
00:24:06.260 incredible
00:24:06.840 life
00:24:07.320 that
00:24:07.520 they
00:24:07.680 live
00:24:08.340 and
00:24:08.640 they'll
00:24:08.880 never
00:24:09.160 get
00:24:09.460 fired
00:24:09.940 but
00:24:10.160 the
00:24:10.420 truth
00:24:10.840 of
00:24:10.960 the
00:24:11.060 matter
00:24:11.260 is
00:24:11.680 CEOs
00:24:12.680 get
00:24:12.940 fired
00:24:14.060 more
00:24:14.440 often
00:24:14.920 than
00:24:15.140 employees
00:24:15.660 do
00:24:15.940 because
00:24:16.360 every
00:24:17.160 time
00:24:17.380 an
00:24:17.500 employee
00:24:17.800 leaves
00:24:18.140 a
00:24:18.300 guy
00:24:18.660 or
00:24:19.020 CEO
00:24:19.400 to
00:24:19.660 another
00:24:19.900 company
00:24:20.260 and
00:24:20.400 takes
00:24:20.560 the
00:24:20.680 trade
00:24:20.900 secrets
00:24:21.220 that's
00:24:21.480 a
00:24:21.620 form
00:24:21.840 of
00:24:21.980 being
00:24:22.100 fired
00:24:22.500 every
00:24:22.780 time
00:24:23.000 a
00:24:23.120 client
00:24:23.400 leaves
00:24:23.760 it's
00:24:24.500 a
00:24:24.620 form
00:24:24.800 of
00:24:24.900 being
00:24:25.020 fired
00:24:25.300 so
00:24:25.440 you
00:24:25.600 cannot
00:24:25.940 say
00:24:26.420 feudalism
00:24:27.180 and
00:24:28.000 slavery
00:24:28.620 and
00:24:33.560 Richard
00:24:34.160 you're
00:24:34.460 reaching
00:24:34.880 that's
00:24:35.320 what
00:24:35.400 they
00:24:35.520 would
00:24:35.660 say
00:24:35.840 to
00:24:36.020 you
00:24:36.360 well
00:24:37.180 let
00:24:37.340 me
00:24:37.440 respond
00:24:37.900 okay
00:24:38.440 you
00:24:39.720 remember
00:24:39.920 the
00:24:40.140 story
00:24:40.500 of
00:24:40.700 Robin
00:24:41.000 Hood
00:24:41.260 okay
00:24:43.160 yes
00:24:43.500 I do
00:24:43.820 I've
00:24:43.980 watched
00:24:44.200 it
00:24:44.320 many
00:24:44.580 times
00:24:45.140 okay
00:24:45.620 let
00:24:47.180 me
00:24:47.300 remind
00:24:47.720 you
00:24:48.040 Robin
00:24:48.800 Hood's
00:24:49.300 merry
00:24:49.620 band
00:24:50.180 of
00:24:50.440 men
00:24:50.840 in
00:24:51.220 the
00:24:51.360 woods
00:24:51.720 those
00:24:52.780 were
00:24:52.980 runaway
00:24:53.480 serfs
00:24:54.100 turns
00:24:54.980 out
00:24:55.380 serfs
00:24:56.000 had
00:24:56.220 a
00:24:56.400 choice
00:24:56.880 they
00:24:57.520 could
00:24:57.740 stay
00:24:58.280 underneath
00:24:58.860 the
00:24:59.620 Lord
00:25:00.020 on the
00:25:00.400 feudal
00:25:00.760 manor
00:25:01.140 where
00:25:01.340 they
00:25:01.460 were
00:25:01.580 probably
00:25:01.960 born
00:25:02.440 or
00:25:03.500 they
00:25:04.280 could
00:25:04.540 try
00:25:05.180 to
00:25:05.580 break
00:25:05.980 away
00:25:06.520 from
00:25:06.980 that
00:25:07.260 situation
00:25:07.940 they
00:25:08.700 could
00:25:08.880 run
00:25:09.180 into
00:25:09.400 the
00:25:09.640 forest
00:25:10.060 and
00:25:10.500 join
00:25:10.880 up
00:25:11.140 with
00:25:11.340 Robin
00:25:12.060 Hood
00:25:12.420 they
00:25:13.140 could
00:25:13.320 get
00:25:13.580 beyond
00:25:14.000 the
00:25:14.240 reach
00:25:14.540 of
00:25:14.760 the
00:25:14.920 Lord
00:25:15.260 whose
00:25:15.540 reach
00:25:15.840 was
00:25:16.040 usually
00:25:16.360 quite
00:25:16.700 limited
00:25:17.180 they
00:25:17.920 could
00:25:18.120 set
00:25:18.380 themselves
00:25:18.720 out
00:25:19.140 to
00:25:19.320 then
00:25:19.520 become
00:25:19.980 what
00:25:20.200 were
00:25:20.380 called
00:25:20.880 free
00:25:21.560 peasants
00:25:22.280 or
00:25:22.520 yeomen
00:25:23.080 or
00:25:23.800 small
00:25:24.280 farmers
00:25:24.980 there
00:25:25.540 were
00:25:25.780 in
00:25:26.000 fact
00:25:26.260 all
00:25:26.580 kinds
00:25:26.880 of
00:25:27.060 options
00:25:27.600 that
00:25:28.180 they
00:25:28.480 had
00:25:28.960 they
00:25:29.400 were
00:25:29.600 risky
00:25:30.100 but
00:25:31.160 you
00:25:31.300 know
00:25:31.460 leaving
00:25:31.800 your
00:25:32.080 job
00:25:32.560 in
00:25:32.720 a
00:25:33.560 capitalist
00:25:34.020 economy
00:25:34.640 that's
00:25:35.280 risky
00:25:35.660 too
00:25:36.100 in
00:25:36.960 fact
00:25:37.160 having
00:25:37.500 a
00:25:37.700 job
00:25:38.040 in
00:25:38.260 capitalism
00:25:38.720 is
00:25:39.220 risky
00:25:39.680 right
00:25:40.600 now
00:25:40.900 we've
00:25:41.180 got
00:25:41.340 35
00:25:41.880 million
00:25:42.200 people
00:25:42.700 who
00:25:42.960 just
00:25:43.260 got
00:25:43.480 fired
00:25:43.980 it
00:25:44.520 turns
00:25:44.860 out
00:25:45.260 employment
00:25:46.160 is
00:25:46.520 risky
00:25:47.080 slaves
00:25:48.240 also
00:25:48.760 by the
00:25:49.340 way
00:25:49.620 ran
00:25:50.080 away
00:25:50.500 slaves
00:25:51.260 also
00:25:51.640 made
00:25:52.040 revolts
00:25:52.800 slaves
00:25:53.660 also
00:25:54.160 carved
00:25:54.660 out
00:25:54.940 for
00:25:55.160 themselves
00:25:55.740 much
00:25:56.420 better
00:25:56.720 conditions
00:25:57.420 than
00:25:58.080 they
00:25:58.320 had
00:25:58.580 been
00:25:58.840 born
00:25:59.260 into
00:25:59.860 through
00:26:00.660 a
00:26:00.820 variety
00:26:01.260 of
00:26:01.600 mechanisms
00:26:02.220 the
00:26:02.900 portrayal
00:26:03.600 of
00:26:03.740 all
00:26:03.960 of
00:26:04.140 them
00:26:04.520 as
00:26:05.000 unfree
00:26:05.900 which
00:26:06.280 is
00:26:06.420 the
00:26:06.560 way
00:26:06.820 the
00:26:07.300 literature
00:26:07.640 does
00:26:08.100 it
00:26:08.320 and
00:26:08.860 capitalism
00:26:09.360 as
00:26:09.860 free
00:26:10.420 strikes
00:26:11.320 me
00:26:11.620 as
00:26:11.820 an
00:26:12.000 extraordinary
00:26:12.840 reach
00:26:13.700 since
00:26:14.440 the
00:26:14.640 vast
00:26:14.920 majority
00:26:15.380 of
00:26:15.820 people
00:26:16.180 who
00:26:16.420 are
00:26:16.620 employed
00:26:17.200 by
00:26:17.540 a
00:26:17.740 capitalist
00:26:18.340 an
00:26:18.840 employer
00:26:19.340 either
00:26:20.240 live
00:26:20.600 with
00:26:20.860 that
00:26:21.220 or
00:26:21.720 they're
00:26:22.140 free
00:26:22.380 to
00:26:22.620 quit
00:26:22.940 in
00:26:23.640 which
00:26:23.860 case
00:26:24.260 their
00:26:24.660 basic
00:26:25.160 option
00:26:25.680 is
00:26:26.260 to
00:26:26.420 go
00:26:26.600 be
00:26:26.820 an
00:26:27.000 employee
00:26:27.500 of
00:26:28.220 somebody
00:26:28.800 else
00:26:29.280 as
00:26:29.600 an
00:26:29.760 employer
00:26:30.280 which
00:26:30.840 is
00:26:30.980 not
00:26:31.160 quite
00:26:31.460 the
00:26:31.680 escape
00:26:32.180 you
00:26:32.500 might
00:26:32.800 want
00:26:33.080 to
00:26:33.220 recommend
00:26:33.740 it's
00:26:34.740 a
00:26:34.920 choice
00:26:35.540 but
00:26:36.120 it's
00:26:36.260 not
00:26:36.420 a
00:26:36.560 choice
00:26:36.820 to
00:26:37.020 escape
00:26:37.380 the
00:26:37.620 system
00:26:38.060 because
00:26:38.580 you
00:26:38.840 really
00:26:39.220 can't
00:26:39.800 do
00:26:40.100 that
00:26:40.560 in
00:26:41.400 most
00:26:41.720 cases
00:26:42.280 and
00:26:43.020 if
00:26:43.160 you
00:26:43.300 were to
00:26:43.700 suggest
00:26:44.280 that
00:26:44.560 an
00:26:45.100 employee
00:26:45.620 can
00:26:46.100 go out
00:26:46.640 and
00:26:46.800 start
00:26:47.060 his
00:26:47.240 own
00:26:47.460 business
00:26:47.980 most
00:26:48.820 of
00:26:49.000 them
00:26:49.140 really
00:26:49.480 can't
00:26:50.200 and
00:26:50.660 many
00:26:51.000 of
00:26:51.240 those
00:26:51.520 who
00:26:51.700 do
00:26:52.240 end
00:26:53.100 up
00:26:53.500 in
00:26:54.560 a
00:26:54.720 situation
00:26:55.320 that
00:26:55.660 many
00:26:55.960 small
00:26:56.440 business
00:26:56.920 men
00:26:57.160 and
00:26:57.360 women
00:26:57.580 will
00:26:57.820 tell
00:26:58.080 you
00:26:58.260 about
00:26:58.660 which
00:26:59.380 is
00:26:59.640 they
00:27:00.080 work
00:27:00.480 harder
00:27:01.040 than
00:27:01.660 the
00:27:01.880 people
00:27:02.240 who
00:27:02.540 are
00:27:02.840 employees
00:27:03.660 and
00:27:04.680 look
00:27:05.000 longingly
00:27:05.780 at
00:27:06.100 the
00:27:06.260 possibility
00:27:06.940 of
00:27:07.520 going
00:27:07.860 back
00:27:08.360 to
00:27:08.840 be
00:27:09.040 an
00:27:09.200 employee
00:27:09.720 because
00:27:10.320 however
00:27:10.700 ugly
00:27:11.220 and
00:27:11.400 unpleasant
00:27:11.860 it
00:27:12.160 was
00:27:12.620 working
00:27:13.440 for
00:27:13.720 yourself
00:27:14.260 can
00:27:14.600 be
00:27:14.980 even
00:27:15.580 worse
00:27:16.220 so
00:27:17.280 now
00:27:17.480 you
00:27:17.840 touched
00:27:18.320 on
00:27:18.460 a
00:27:18.580 lot
00:27:18.720 of
00:27:18.820 things
00:27:18.960 so
00:27:19.100 let
00:27:19.200 me
00:27:19.280 take
00:27:19.480 them
00:27:19.580 one
00:27:19.760 at
00:27:19.920 a
00:27:20.020 time
00:27:20.180 I
00:27:20.320 took
00:27:20.540 notes
00:27:20.920 I'm
00:27:21.140 taking
00:27:21.360 notes
00:27:21.740 here
00:27:21.900 so
00:27:22.080 you're
00:27:22.300 the
00:27:22.420 professor
00:27:22.840 I'm
00:27:23.240 the
00:27:23.360 student
00:27:23.580 I'm
00:27:23.820 taking
00:27:24.040 notes
00:27:24.400 here
00:27:24.600 so
00:27:25.320 let's
00:27:25.540 talk
00:27:25.720 about
00:27:25.880 Robinhood
00:27:26.320 so
00:27:26.500 Robinhood
00:27:26.880 was
00:27:27.080 taking
00:27:27.320 money
00:27:27.620 from
00:27:27.900 who
00:27:28.100 and
00:27:28.240 giving
00:27:28.400 it
00:27:28.560 to
00:27:28.680 who
00:27:28.900 he
00:27:29.820 was
00:27:30.000 taking
00:27:30.300 money
00:27:30.600 from
00:27:30.800 the
00:27:30.980 rich
00:27:31.200 and
00:27:31.380 giving
00:27:31.620 it
00:27:31.820 to
00:27:31.940 the
00:27:32.120 poor
00:27:32.380 that
00:27:32.640 was
00:27:32.840 his
00:27:33.520 specialty
00:27:34.020 but
00:27:34.580 he
00:27:34.740 was
00:27:34.960 was
00:27:35.360 he
00:27:35.500 was
00:27:35.740 it
00:27:35.880 really
00:27:36.140 the
00:27:36.360 rich
00:27:36.620 he
00:27:36.760 was
00:27:36.940 taking
00:27:37.180 money
00:27:37.460 from
00:27:37.700 or
00:27:37.820 was
00:27:37.960 he
00:27:38.060 taking
00:27:38.300 money
00:27:38.580 from
00:27:38.820 the
00:27:39.020 government
00:27:39.680 who
00:27:39.940 was
00:27:40.200 taxing
00:27:41.040 people
00:27:41.960 too
00:27:42.280 much
00:27:42.800 Richard
00:27:43.140 you
00:27:43.300 got
00:27:43.480 to
00:27:43.600 tell
00:27:43.740 the
00:27:43.880 true
00:27:44.080 story
00:27:44.440 of
00:27:44.640 Robinhood
00:27:45.340 I
00:27:45.640 grew up
00:27:46.000 in
00:27:46.100 Iran
00:27:46.340 I
00:27:46.500 watched
00:27:46.760 it
00:27:46.860 a few
00:27:47.060 hundred
00:27:47.240 times
00:27:47.700 so
00:27:48.000 he
00:27:48.380 wasn't
00:27:48.700 taking
00:27:48.980 money
00:27:49.280 from
00:27:49.540 the
00:27:49.720 rich
00:27:49.940 he
00:27:50.060 was
00:27:50.200 taking
00:27:50.480 money
00:27:50.720 from
00:27:50.920 the
00:27:51.100 government
00:27:51.540 that
00:27:52.160 are
00:27:52.300 so
00:27:52.700 noble
00:27:53.240 they
00:27:53.460 want
00:27:53.640 to
00:27:53.740 do
00:27:53.880 such
00:27:54.300 good
00:27:54.540 things
00:27:54.780 for
00:27:54.920 the
00:27:55.060 people
00:27:55.320 and
00:27:56.060 he
00:27:56.180 was
00:27:56.340 giving
00:27:56.580 it
00:27:56.700 to
00:27:56.780 the
00:27:56.900 people
00:27:57.240 maybe
00:27:58.180 you
00:27:58.440 and
00:27:58.580 I
00:27:58.740 read
00:27:58.980 all
00:27:59.200 the
00:27:59.560 Mr.
00:28:00.240 Robinhood
00:28:00.720 story
00:28:01.140 a little
00:28:01.420 different
00:28:01.580 I
00:28:01.680 watched
00:28:01.980 it
00:28:02.100 in
00:28:02.240 Farsi
00:28:02.580 maybe
00:28:02.860 the
00:28:03.100 translation
00:28:03.640 was
00:28:03.980 incorrect
00:28:04.320 I
00:28:04.680 don't
00:28:04.820 know
00:28:05.060 I
00:28:05.540 don't
00:28:05.700 know
00:28:05.860 either
00:28:06.140 but
00:28:06.740 here's
00:28:07.460 the
00:28:07.580 way
00:28:07.700 I
00:28:07.900 read
00:28:08.160 it
00:28:08.320 yeah
00:28:09.060 he
00:28:09.320 was
00:28:09.520 against
00:28:09.860 the
00:28:10.100 government
00:28:10.440 because
00:28:10.800 he
00:28:11.000 saw
00:28:11.180 the
00:28:11.380 government
00:28:11.780 as
00:28:12.280 in
00:28:12.560 the
00:28:12.740 clutches
00:28:13.440 of
00:28:14.160 the
00:28:14.380 rich
00:28:14.740 and
00:28:15.220 so
00:28:15.380 for
00:28:15.600 him
00:28:16.020 whether
00:28:16.560 he
00:28:16.980 stole
00:28:17.800 from
00:28:18.120 a
00:28:18.320 rich
00:28:18.560 traveler
00:28:19.160 going
00:28:19.600 through
00:28:19.840 the
00:28:20.040 forest
00:28:20.540 or
00:28:21.460 he
00:28:21.660 had
00:28:21.900 pitched
00:28:22.220 battles
00:28:22.720 with
00:28:23.020 the
00:28:23.200 sheriff
00:28:23.500 of
00:28:23.760 Nottingham
00:28:24.380 if
00:28:24.560 you
00:28:24.680 remember
00:28:25.120 his
00:28:25.640 arch
00:28:26.020 enemy
00:28:26.440 for
00:28:27.320 him
00:28:27.900 the
00:28:28.480 distinction
00:28:29.080 between
00:28:29.640 the
00:28:29.920 rich
00:28:30.140 people
00:28:30.600 and
00:28:31.220 the
00:28:31.420 politicians
00:28:32.220 those
00:28:32.700 rich
00:28:33.000 people
00:28:33.340 had
00:28:33.600 in
00:28:33.740 their
00:28:33.940 pocket
00:28:34.360 was
00:28:34.920 a
00:28:35.120 difference
00:28:35.520 he
00:28:35.780 didn't
00:28:36.180 care
00:28:36.460 much
00:28:36.820 about
00:28:37.260 he
00:28:37.880 would
00:28:38.180 take
00:28:38.520 from
00:28:38.780 either
00:28:39.020 one
00:28:39.360 of
00:28:39.520 them
00:28:39.720 or
00:28:39.900 both
00:28:40.300 of
00:28:40.500 them
00:28:40.760 and
00:28:41.280 give
00:28:41.620 to
00:28:41.800 the
00:28:41.980 people
00:28:42.300 that
00:28:42.540 they
00:28:42.840 together
00:28:46.020 again
00:28:49.860 it
00:28:50.160 goes
00:28:50.360 back
00:28:50.640 to
00:28:50.800 the
00:28:50.960 taxation
00:28:51.740 they
00:28:52.040 were
00:28:52.200 taxing
00:28:52.760 the
00:28:52.880 hell
00:28:53.040 out
00:28:53.200 of
00:28:53.280 the
00:28:53.400 people
00:28:53.800 the
00:28:54.360 government
00:28:54.700 was
00:28:55.080 these
00:28:55.380 noble
00:28:55.800 people
00:28:56.140 that
00:28:56.360 eventually
00:28:56.700 a
00:28:56.880 greedy
00:28:57.040 person
00:28:57.380 comes
00:28:57.760 and
00:28:58.380 abuse
00:28:58.740 power
00:28:59.220 but
00:28:59.480 if
00:29:00.040 there's
00:29:00.240 one
00:29:00.480 part
00:29:00.760 that
00:29:00.920 I
00:29:01.060 get
00:29:01.240 from
00:29:01.420 Robin
00:29:01.740 Hood
00:29:01.900 is
00:29:02.020 the
00:29:02.180 following
00:29:02.480 you
00:29:02.700 do
00:29:02.920 need
00:29:03.280 laws
00:29:04.580 and
00:29:04.760 you
00:29:04.880 do
00:29:05.000 need
00:29:05.200 lawyers
00:29:05.600 if
00:29:05.800 you
00:29:05.900 look
00:29:06.100 at
00:29:06.240 China
00:29:06.600 back
00:29:06.900 in
00:29:07.040 1984
00:29:07.760 China
00:29:08.940 only
00:29:09.300 had
00:29:09.540 four
00:29:09.960 law
00:29:10.300 schools
00:29:10.760 you
00:29:11.160 know
00:29:11.280 the
00:29:11.380 Milton
00:29:11.780 Friedman
00:29:16.020 argument
00:29:16.220 is
00:29:16.400 not
00:29:16.600 going
00:29:16.720 to
00:29:16.820 work
00:29:17.000 100
00:29:17.220 percent
00:29:17.580 you
00:29:17.760 need
00:29:17.940 law
00:29:18.720 and
00:29:18.840 you
00:29:18.920 need
00:29:19.060 lawyers
00:29:19.460 right
00:29:19.780 they
00:29:20.500 had
00:29:20.700 four
00:29:21.000 law
00:29:21.320 schools
00:29:21.620 in
00:29:21.920 1984
00:29:22.540 and
00:29:23.040 only
00:29:23.240 2,000
00:29:23.840 lawyers
00:29:24.260 and
00:29:25.000 China
00:29:25.340 had
00:29:25.580 to
00:29:25.720 make
00:29:25.940 sure
00:29:26.080 they
00:29:26.240 get
00:29:26.420 laws
00:29:26.900 or
00:29:27.180 else
00:29:27.560 the
00:29:28.280 powerful
00:29:28.900 businesses
00:29:29.500 without
00:29:29.840 some
00:29:30.280 sort
00:29:30.620 of
00:29:30.740 regulation
00:29:31.260 and
00:29:31.520 laws
00:29:31.820 would
00:29:32.020 abuse
00:29:32.400 other
00:29:32.760 people
00:29:33.120 so
00:29:33.300 that
00:29:33.580 part
00:29:33.920 absolutely
00:29:34.760 I
00:29:35.040 agree
00:29:35.200 because
00:29:35.560 today
00:29:36.440 you're
00:29:36.700 seeing
00:29:36.940 a lot
00:29:37.220 of that
00:29:37.460 taking
00:29:37.700 place
00:29:38.200 in
00:29:38.920 many
00:29:39.180 industries
00:29:39.640 whoever
00:29:39.960 can
00:29:40.200 get
00:29:40.380 the
00:29:40.520 best
00:29:40.720 lobbyists
00:29:41.280 that
00:29:41.420 can
00:29:41.580 pay
00:29:41.740 the
00:29:41.900 most
00:29:42.100 money
00:29:42.420 to
00:29:42.600 people
00:29:42.820 that
00:29:43.000 they
00:29:43.140 can
00:29:43.260 control
00:29:43.660 and
00:29:43.820 campaign
00:29:44.160 with
00:29:44.500 they
00:29:45.000 can
00:29:45.160 pass
00:29:45.440 a lot
00:29:45.700 of
00:29:45.800 the
00:29:45.920 laws
00:29:46.140 but
00:29:46.300 when
00:29:46.460 you
00:29:46.600 say
00:29:46.920 the
00:29:47.600 rich
00:29:47.860 and
00:29:48.000 the
00:29:48.140 poor
00:29:48.440 I
00:29:48.860 sometimes
00:29:49.900 wonder
00:29:50.380 what
00:29:50.600 direction
00:29:50.960 you
00:29:51.160 go
00:29:51.320 from
00:29:51.540 there
00:29:51.680 as
00:29:51.880 far
00:29:52.060 as
00:29:52.220 the
00:29:52.420 people
00:29:55.020 that
00:29:55.540 are
00:29:56.280 employees
00:29:56.960 who
00:29:57.280 cannot
00:29:57.560 be
00:29:57.880 rich
00:29:58.240 you're
00:29:58.420 saying
00:29:58.620 poor
00:29:59.020 people
00:29:59.280 cannot
00:29:59.560 be
00:29:59.800 rich
00:30:00.060 rich
00:30:00.660 do
00:30:00.860 you
00:30:00.940 know
00:30:01.040 how
00:30:01.180 many
00:30:01.360 people
00:30:01.660 last
00:30:02.060 year
00:30:02.240 filed
00:30:02.500 taxes
00:30:10.380 what
00:30:11.940 do
00:30:12.040 you
00:30:12.120 think
00:30:12.260 I'm
00:30:12.440 actually
00:30:12.660 curious
00:30:13.040 to
00:30:13.160 know
00:30:13.240 what
00:30:13.380 you
00:30:13.500 think
00:30:13.900 good
00:30:15.460 question
00:30:15.940 no
00:30:16.360 statistic
00:30:16.860 in my
00:30:17.360 head
00:30:17.580 comes
00:30:17.900 to
00:30:18.080 my
00:30:18.260 mind
00:30:18.600 but
00:30:18.780 this
00:30:18.920 is
00:30:19.020 from
00:30:19.200 the
00:30:19.360 IRS
00:30:19.780 it's
00:30:20.260 a
00:30:20.380 government
00:30:20.840 organization
00:30:21.560 that
00:30:21.780 you
00:30:21.900 trust
00:30:22.320 yes
00:30:22.840 no
00:30:23.280 no
00:30:23.520 listen
00:30:24.260 you
00:30:24.660 want
00:30:24.980 to
00:30:25.140 paint
00:30:25.420 me
00:30:25.680 as
00:30:26.020 an
00:30:26.220 advocate
00:30:26.640 of
00:30:26.880 the
00:30:27.020 government
00:30:27.380 I'm
00:30:27.900 not
00:30:28.300 that's
00:30:29.180 not
00:30:29.360 I
00:30:29.560 don't
00:30:30.000 trust
00:30:30.300 the
00:30:30.460 government
00:30:30.780 I
00:30:31.060 don't
00:30:31.280 see
00:30:31.460 the
00:30:31.620 government
00:30:31.960 as
00:30:32.460 an
00:30:32.640 thank
00:30:32.940 God
00:30:33.320 man
00:30:33.580 because
00:30:33.840 we're
00:30:34.040 on
00:30:34.160 the
00:30:34.280 same
00:30:34.460 page
00:30:34.740 there
00:30:34.940 that's
00:30:35.240 good
00:30:35.380 to
00:30:35.520 hear
00:30:35.720 okay
00:30:36.140 but
00:30:36.740 how
00:30:37.320 many
00:30:37.480 people
00:30:37.840 last year
00:30:38.420 made a million
00:30:39.280 dollars
00:30:39.560 I don't
00:30:40.220 know what
00:30:40.600 a number
00:30:40.980 is
00:30:41.160 actually
00:30:41.740 I'm
00:30:41.980 curious
00:30:42.340 to know
00:30:42.580 what
00:30:42.780 you
00:30:42.920 think
00:30:43.100 so
00:30:43.260 you
00:30:43.460 and I
00:30:43.680 are
00:30:43.780 having
00:30:43.940 a
00:30:44.080 drink
00:30:44.300 together
00:30:44.580 I
00:30:44.720 don't
00:30:44.820 know
00:30:44.900 if
00:30:44.980 you
00:30:45.080 drink
00:30:45.320 we're
00:30:45.480 having
00:30:45.620 coffee
00:30:45.960 hot
00:30:46.160 chocolate
00:30:46.460 we're
00:30:46.640 having
00:30:46.780 a
00:30:46.940 beer
00:30:47.120 and
00:30:47.800 you're
00:30:47.980 talking
00:30:48.260 we're
00:30:48.480 shooting
00:30:48.780 the
00:30:48.960 you
00:30:49.060 know
00:30:49.200 what
00:30:49.460 and
00:30:49.620 I
00:30:49.740 say
00:30:49.920 Richard
00:30:50.160 how
00:30:50.340 many
00:30:50.480 people
00:30:50.700 last
00:30:50.960 you
00:30:51.080 made
00:30:51.180 a
00:30:51.280 million
00:30:51.460 dollars
00:30:51.760 in
00:30:51.900 taxes
00:30:52.160 what
00:30:52.320 would
00:30:52.440 you
00:30:52.540 say
00:30:52.760 four
00:30:54.300 million
00:30:54.680 four
00:30:56.120 million
00:30:56.360 people
00:30:56.680 you
00:30:56.860 said
00:30:57.080 million
00:30:57.720 dollars
00:30:58.140 yeah
00:30:58.540 so
00:30:58.720 the
00:30:58.880 way
00:30:59.040 you
00:30:59.220 did
00:30:59.400 the
00:30:59.600 math
00:31:00.020 was
00:31:00.580 330
00:31:01.720 million
00:31:02.340 you
00:31:03.720 did
00:31:03.900 1%
00:31:04.760 little
00:31:05.040 over
00:31:05.240 1%
00:31:06.040 of
00:31:06.680 the
00:31:06.800 330
00:31:07.340 million
00:31:07.980 half
00:31:08.500 of
00:31:08.640 them
00:31:08.800 can't
00:31:09.240 work
00:31:09.500 because
00:31:09.760 their
00:31:09.940 kids
00:31:10.240 or
00:31:10.360 they're
00:31:10.560 older
00:31:10.960 so
00:31:11.680 working
00:31:12.160 employees
00:31:12.740 we
00:31:12.980 have
00:31:13.160 150
00:31:14.440 million
00:31:14.940 people
00:31:15.260 in
00:31:15.420 America
00:31:15.680 that
00:31:15.880 actually
00:31:16.200 work
00:31:16.700 and
00:31:17.680 out
00:31:17.840 of
00:31:17.900 the
00:31:18.000 150
00:31:18.440 million
00:31:18.820 that
00:31:19.080 work
00:31:19.660 1%
00:31:21.000 makes
00:31:21.380 around
00:31:21.620 460
00:31:22.360 1%
00:31:23.400 makes
00:31:23.680 460
00:31:24.220 if
00:31:24.820 you
00:31:24.940 know
00:31:25.020 how
00:31:25.120 they
00:31:25.240 say
00:31:25.340 you
00:31:25.440 into
00:31:25.560 1%
00:31:26.200 you
00:31:26.380 make
00:31:26.520 460
00:31:27.080 500
00:31:28.300 thousand
00:31:28.740 people
00:31:29.100 last
00:31:29.500 year
00:31:29.780 filed
00:31:30.740 in
00:31:31.740 their
00:31:31.920 income
00:31:32.240 taxes
00:31:32.700 that
00:31:33.000 they
00:31:33.140 made
00:31:33.280 over
00:31:33.420 a
00:31:33.540 million
00:31:33.700 dollars
00:31:34.160 500
00:31:35.200 thousand
00:31:35.700 it's
00:31:36.480 not
00:31:36.620 like
00:31:36.820 it's
00:31:36.980 only
00:31:37.140 18
00:31:37.560 people
00:31:38.000 it's
00:31:38.860 not
00:31:38.980 like
00:31:39.140 it's
00:31:39.320 only
00:31:39.560 62
00:31:40.520 thousand
00:31:40.960 people
00:31:41.420 it's
00:31:42.120 500
00:31:43.260 thousand
00:31:43.920 people
00:31:44.400 last
00:31:44.820 year
00:31:44.960 made
00:31:45.120 a
00:31:45.280 million
00:31:45.540 dollars
00:31:45.940 in
00:31:46.060 America
00:31:46.320 if
00:31:46.900 you
00:31:47.140 and
00:31:47.260 I
00:31:47.380 were
00:31:47.540 talking
00:31:47.880 and
00:31:48.080 you
00:31:48.200 were
00:31:48.340 to
00:31:48.480 say
00:31:48.720 I
00:31:49.420 climbed
00:31:49.880 Mount
00:31:50.160 Everest
00:31:50.540 and
00:31:50.940 I'm
00:31:51.100 the
00:31:51.240 only
00:31:51.480 one
00:31:51.720 that
00:31:51.900 did
00:31:52.100 it
00:31:52.280 after
00:31:52.800 65
00:31:53.300 years
00:31:53.620 old
00:31:53.880 you're
00:31:54.480 the
00:31:54.560 only
00:31:54.740 one
00:31:54.960 I'd be
00:31:55.140 like
00:31:55.260 oh my
00:31:55.600 I can
00:31:55.900 never
00:31:56.080 do it
00:31:56.480 I have
00:31:57.220 a hard
00:31:57.500 time
00:31:57.680 sometimes
00:31:58.060 climbing
00:31:58.500 my
00:31:58.760 office
00:31:59.140 here
00:31:59.400 you know
00:31:59.680 three
00:31:59.880 stories
00:32:00.320 I'm
00:32:00.880 going
00:32:01.060 crazy
00:32:01.580 you
00:32:02.080 climb
00:32:02.440 Mount
00:32:02.720 Everest
00:32:03.020 that's
00:32:03.700 impossible
00:32:04.240 I get
00:32:05.000 that
00:32:05.240 argument
00:32:05.640 that
00:32:06.080 not
00:32:06.420 everybody
00:32:06.840 can
00:32:07.100 climb
00:32:07.340 Mount
00:32:07.540 Everest
00:32:07.800 but
00:32:08.580 if
00:32:08.740 Richard
00:32:09.100 500
00:32:09.860 thousand
00:32:10.320 people
00:32:10.660 in
00:32:10.820 America
00:32:11.140 can
00:32:11.380 make
00:32:11.560 a
00:32:11.700 million
00:32:11.900 dollars
00:32:12.240 don't
00:32:13.000 you
00:32:13.140 think
00:32:13.440 one
00:32:13.740 million
00:32:14.120 people
00:32:14.400 can
00:32:14.620 make
00:32:14.780 a
00:32:14.920 million
00:32:15.100 dollars
00:32:15.360 don't
00:32:15.620 you
00:32:15.720 think
00:32:15.880 more
00:32:16.140 people
00:32:16.380 can
00:32:16.560 make
00:32:16.720 a
00:32:16.820 million
00:32:17.000 dollars
00:32:17.420 no
00:32:19.700 you don't
00:32:21.160 believe
00:32:21.500 that
00:32:21.900 no not
00:32:22.660 for one
00:32:23.020 minute
00:32:23.360 seriously
00:32:24.680 yeah
00:32:25.620 what's
00:32:26.280 your
00:32:26.440 argument
00:32:26.820 how do
00:32:27.480 you argue
00:32:27.800 that part
00:32:28.360 though so
00:32:28.720 500,000
00:32:29.980 Richard made
00:32:30.480 a million
00:32:30.760 dollars
00:32:31.040 last year
00:32:31.580 that's a
00:32:32.480 lot of
00:32:32.740 people
00:32:33.140 right but
00:32:33.980 in order
00:32:34.400 for there
00:32:34.800 to be
00:32:35.100 500,000
00:32:35.960 people
00:32:36.280 who make
00:32:36.700 a million
00:32:37.160 and there
00:32:38.520 have to
00:32:38.800 be an
00:32:39.140 awful
00:32:39.420 lot
00:32:39.720 of
00:32:39.840 people
00:32:40.160 who
00:32:40.620 make
00:32:40.840 very
00:32:41.120 little
00:32:41.480 which
00:32:42.360 we've
00:32:42.660 always
00:32:43.140 had
00:32:43.500 capitalism
00:32:43.960 has
00:32:44.480 always
00:32:45.280 produced
00:32:46.420 and
00:32:46.740 reproduced
00:32:47.640 vast
00:32:48.520 numbers
00:32:49.020 of poor
00:32:49.800 people
00:32:50.160 as a
00:32:51.000 system
00:32:51.440 it is
00:32:52.300 very
00:32:52.880 efficient
00:32:53.500 in
00:32:54.120 reproducing
00:32:55.120 vast
00:32:56.160 poverty
00:32:56.880 it might
00:32:57.860 be nice
00:32:58.440 to focus
00:32:59.120 on the
00:32:59.860 rich
00:33:00.220 at the
00:33:00.660 other
00:33:01.000 end
00:33:01.500 but they
00:33:02.300 are
00:33:02.540 relatively
00:33:03.120 small
00:33:03.820 in number
00:33:04.460 compared
00:33:05.140 to those
00:33:05.880 who really
00:33:06.420 are having
00:33:07.020 a hard
00:33:07.620 time
00:33:08.260 and you
00:33:09.200 could
00:33:09.740 I suppose
00:33:10.500 blame it
00:33:11.780 on the
00:33:12.160 individual
00:33:12.820 that would
00:33:13.900 be very
00:33:14.340 convenient
00:33:14.940 for those
00:33:15.580 who are
00:33:16.000 rich
00:33:16.480 because then
00:33:17.340 they could
00:33:17.740 claim
00:33:18.180 oh it's
00:33:18.960 because of
00:33:19.500 me
00:33:19.920 rather than
00:33:21.180 a system
00:33:21.760 that assigns
00:33:22.840 these roles
00:33:23.820 but you know
00:33:24.840 the master
00:33:25.480 knew that
00:33:26.560 the reason
00:33:27.020 he was a
00:33:27.640 master
00:33:28.060 was because
00:33:28.920 his father
00:33:29.620 and mother
00:33:30.140 were masters
00:33:31.040 and the
00:33:32.000 slave understood
00:33:32.940 that he
00:33:34.060 was
00:33:34.320 you're saying
00:33:35.600 in the world
00:33:36.040 of business
00:33:36.600 or you're
00:33:37.020 saying the
00:33:37.380 master
00:33:37.780 who owned
00:33:38.400 slaves
00:33:38.960 the master
00:33:39.640 who owned
00:33:40.160 slaves
00:33:40.600 and the
00:33:41.880 slave understood
00:33:42.800 he was a
00:33:43.560 slave
00:33:43.940 mostly because
00:33:45.180 his mother
00:33:45.600 and father
00:33:46.180 were slaves
00:33:47.220 and that's
00:33:47.580 how the
00:33:47.880 system
00:33:48.260 reproduced
00:33:49.700 the people
00:33:50.460 and at the
00:33:51.360 top of
00:33:51.840 capitalism
00:33:52.320 there is a
00:33:53.120 relatively
00:33:53.640 small class
00:33:54.900 I went to
00:33:55.860 school with
00:33:56.360 them for
00:33:56.700 10 years
00:33:57.200 I really do
00:33:57.820 know them
00:33:58.160 pretty well
00:33:58.780 and a good
00:33:59.520 number of
00:34:00.000 them are my
00:34:00.460 friends to
00:34:01.020 this day
00:34:01.660 but that's
00:34:02.960 a self
00:34:03.400 reproducing
00:34:04.340 group
00:34:04.900 that does
00:34:05.660 let others
00:34:06.420 in from
00:34:07.080 time to
00:34:07.720 time
00:34:08.140 you gotta
00:34:08.440 stop
00:34:08.880 hanging
00:34:09.120 around
00:34:09.360 with
00:34:09.520 Harvard
00:34:09.840 Yale
00:34:10.180 and Stanford
00:34:11.080 people
00:34:11.460 you gotta
00:34:11.860 get out
00:34:12.240 and go
00:34:12.460 to Glendale
00:34:12.900 Community
00:34:13.340 College
00:34:13.820 you gotta
00:34:14.880 get out
00:34:15.280 and go
00:34:15.500 to some
00:34:15.860 regular
00:34:16.220 people
00:34:16.520 like us
00:34:17.120 who are
00:34:17.380 not at
00:34:17.800 your level
00:34:18.220 of brilliance
00:34:18.800 and intelligence
00:34:19.460 and your
00:34:19.780 peers at
00:34:20.220 Harvard
00:34:20.460 you gotta
00:34:21.360 come and
00:34:21.700 hang out
00:34:22.000 with us
00:34:22.360 a little
00:34:22.600 you've
00:34:22.820 been hanging
00:34:23.120 around
00:34:23.320 with too
00:34:23.580 many
00:34:23.780 elitists
00:34:24.240 and powerful
00:34:24.740 people
00:34:25.080 Richard
00:34:25.440 some of
00:34:26.060 the small
00:34:26.460 people
00:34:26.820 are regular
00:34:27.360 people
00:34:27.900 no that
00:34:28.520 was over
00:34:28.980 when I was
00:34:29.640 you know
00:34:29.980 when I got
00:34:30.600 my PhD
00:34:31.280 at Yale
00:34:31.900 they always
00:34:32.740 looked at
00:34:33.200 me as
00:34:34.560 somebody who
00:34:35.320 must have
00:34:35.860 been dropped
00:34:36.400 on the floor
00:34:37.020 by his
00:34:37.500 mother at
00:34:38.100 an inopportune
00:34:38.840 moment when
00:34:39.580 he was a
00:34:40.060 baby because
00:34:41.180 he went in
00:34:41.980 this other
00:34:42.640 direction
00:34:43.320 you're not
00:34:43.780 supposed to
00:34:44.440 go to
00:34:45.460 become a
00:34:45.920 critic of
00:34:46.420 capitalism
00:34:46.920 if you go
00:34:47.580 to Harvard
00:34:48.000 Stanford
00:34:48.500 and Yale
00:34:49.060 if you're
00:34:49.780 not familiar
00:34:50.340 let me
00:34:50.840 assure you
00:34:51.660 that my
00:34:52.540 teachers
00:34:53.080 with very
00:34:54.340 very few
00:34:55.320 exceptions
00:34:55.900 were cheerleaders
00:34:57.680 for capitalism
00:34:58.800 every time
00:34:59.900 what year is
00:35:00.360 this
00:35:00.620 what year
00:35:01.200 is this
00:35:01.760 what year
00:35:02.420 is this
00:35:03.120 I entered
00:35:05.120 Harvard in
00:35:05.740 1959
00:35:06.520 and I
00:35:07.220 finished my
00:35:07.720 education
00:35:08.240 at Yale
00:35:08.800 in 1970
00:35:10.100 that makes
00:35:11.040 sense
00:35:11.280 a lot
00:35:11.800 has changed
00:35:12.560 in 50 years
00:35:13.340 well I've
00:35:13.880 been a
00:35:14.160 professor
00:35:14.560 at those
00:35:15.460 and other
00:35:16.040 universities
00:35:16.780 ever since
00:35:17.800 and in
00:35:18.800 my humble
00:35:19.400 opinion
00:35:19.920 nothing has
00:35:21.300 changed
00:35:21.980 it is the
00:35:23.940 same today
00:35:24.560 I go
00:35:25.440 around the
00:35:26.020 country
00:35:26.340 I speak
00:35:27.160 every year
00:35:28.540 in I
00:35:29.000 don't know
00:35:29.580 20
00:35:30.120 25
00:35:30.680 college and
00:35:32.080 university
00:35:32.640 settings
00:35:33.200 from state
00:35:34.560 schools and
00:35:35.220 community
00:35:35.620 colleges all
00:35:36.440 up to
00:35:36.900 private
00:35:37.420 universities
00:35:38.160 and the
00:35:39.500 combination
00:35:40.400 of
00:35:41.320 ignorance
00:35:42.760 there's no
00:35:43.220 nice way to
00:35:43.840 say this
00:35:44.340 the combination
00:35:45.120 of ignorance
00:35:46.060 about capitalism
00:35:47.520 and socialism
00:35:48.480 and all these
00:35:49.140 kinds of
00:35:49.540 questions
00:35:50.020 and the
00:35:51.000 combination
00:35:52.200 of that
00:35:52.820 ignorance
00:35:53.280 for many
00:35:53.880 and the
00:35:54.880 kind of
00:35:55.720 weird
00:35:57.240 confidence
00:35:58.180 in a
00:35:59.180 point of
00:35:59.660 view
00:35:59.920 for which
00:36:00.620 they have
00:36:01.000 no support
00:36:01.900 at all
00:36:02.520 teaches me
00:36:04.000 since these
00:36:04.800 are perfectly
00:36:05.260 nice and
00:36:05.900 intelligent
00:36:06.360 people
00:36:06.900 that this
00:36:07.840 remains a
00:36:08.980 taboo
00:36:09.780 topic
00:36:10.520 for most
00:36:11.320 kids
00:36:11.680 they do
00:36:12.140 not as
00:36:12.740 they go
00:36:13.080 through
00:36:13.320 college
00:36:13.800 whether it's
00:36:14.580 community
00:36:14.940 college or
00:36:15.540 university
00:36:16.180 they are
00:36:17.120 not exposed
00:36:17.940 they can't
00:36:18.800 be to
00:36:19.580 anybody
00:36:20.160 who takes
00:36:21.080 this stuff
00:36:21.740 the critique
00:36:22.520 of capitalism
00:36:23.440 seriously
00:36:24.500 they're just
00:36:25.020 not given
00:36:25.460 the opportunity
00:36:26.300 by the way
00:36:27.440 half the time
00:36:28.440 they invite me
00:36:29.260 it's precisely
00:36:30.360 to kind of
00:36:31.760 open a little
00:36:32.620 space
00:36:33.480 in a curriculum
00:36:34.680 that would
00:36:35.200 otherwise not
00:36:36.080 touch it
00:36:36.600 I don't know
00:36:37.280 about that
00:36:37.700 I think the
00:36:38.160 last I went
00:36:38.780 to Harvard
00:36:40.160 for a
00:36:41.560 OPM program
00:36:42.560 meaning an
00:36:43.120 owner president
00:36:43.780 management program
00:36:44.740 it's like a
00:36:45.120 three-week
00:36:45.500 program you go
00:36:46.140 to
00:36:46.460 and you have
00:36:47.460 to do a
00:36:47.820 certain amount
00:36:48.160 of dollars
00:36:48.560 per year
00:36:48.900 to qualify
00:36:49.360 for it
00:36:49.660 so I went
00:36:50.000 to it
00:36:50.360 and it was
00:36:51.160 the time
00:36:51.600 where Trump
00:36:52.700 and Hillary
00:36:53.240 were debating
00:36:53.840 okay
00:36:54.540 and so in
00:36:55.860 one of the
00:36:56.260 halls that says
00:36:56.900 we're opening
00:36:57.400 up the debate
00:36:58.040 teachers showed
00:36:58.800 up professors
00:36:59.340 showed up
00:36:59.820 everybody
00:37:00.420 showed up
00:37:01.060 and I'll
00:37:01.260 just go in
00:37:02.020 there and
00:37:02.660 I'll sit
00:37:03.060 in the corner
00:37:03.460 just to watch
00:37:04.140 to see what
00:37:04.520 happens
00:37:04.880 Richard
00:37:06.140 100%
00:37:08.240 of people
00:37:09.400 hate it
00:37:10.820 passionately
00:37:12.500 your favorite
00:37:13.860 person in the
00:37:14.520 world that you
00:37:14.920 have a painting
00:37:15.380 on the wall
00:37:15.820 right next to
00:37:16.400 you
00:37:16.480 President
00:37:16.800 Trump
00:37:17.180 they hated
00:37:18.300 they hated
00:37:19.600 President Trump
00:37:20.700 and they were
00:37:21.500 all like
00:37:22.540 bowing down
00:37:23.960 to how amazing
00:37:25.100 you know
00:37:26.260 Hillary Clinton
00:37:27.080 was
00:37:27.360 I'm talking
00:37:27.960 five six hundred
00:37:28.800 people
00:37:28.980 and I'm just
00:37:29.320 like sitting
00:37:29.740 and watching
00:37:30.120 and I'm like
00:37:30.460 wow
00:37:30.920 this is pretty
00:37:31.940 and this is a
00:37:32.340 guy that voted
00:37:32.920 for Clinton
00:37:33.500 and this is a
00:37:34.500 guy that voted
00:37:35.400 on the left
00:37:35.940 and the right
00:37:36.300 and he's a
00:37:36.660 registered independent
00:37:37.320 today
00:37:37.680 so I'm watching
00:37:38.620 these guys
00:37:38.940 I'm like wow
00:37:39.400 this is pretty
00:37:39.920 wild
00:37:40.240 so now
00:37:41.060 when I hire
00:37:41.680 people
00:37:42.080 and then they
00:37:42.440 come from
00:37:42.780 schools
00:37:43.140 if they come
00:37:44.060 out of UCLA
00:37:44.740 if they come
00:37:45.500 out of Harvard
00:37:46.380 if they come
00:37:47.120 out of Berkeley
00:37:49.040 obviously you know
00:37:49.860 where Berkeley's at
00:37:50.580 if they come
00:37:51.240 a lot of these
00:37:51.800 schools
00:37:52.140 even Yale
00:37:52.860 the reason why
00:37:55.660 Sanders was able
00:37:56.760 to get as much
00:37:57.400 traction as he did
00:37:58.420 is a byproduct
00:37:59.260 of the last
00:37:59.780 30 years
00:38:00.280 socialism's getting
00:38:01.160 a lot of
00:38:03.200 through education
00:38:04.120 and school
00:38:04.560 and a lot of
00:38:05.140 socialists
00:38:05.700 are able to
00:38:06.620 pass their agenda
00:38:07.280 to kids
00:38:07.660 and kids are
00:38:08.060 thinking about it
00:38:08.700 you're seeing
00:38:09.120 that it's not
00:38:09.540 like I'm
00:38:09.860 the first
00:38:10.160 person
00:38:10.420 that's telling
00:38:10.800 you this
00:38:11.180 so
00:38:11.840 stop
00:38:13.120 Patrick
00:38:13.920 I don't
00:38:14.340 agree
00:38:14.640 with that
00:38:15.120 you don't
00:38:16.100 agree
00:38:16.360 with the
00:38:16.700 fact
00:38:16.940 that
00:38:17.160 the spirit
00:38:17.820 of socialism
00:38:18.460 is in
00:38:18.840 universities
00:38:19.240 today
00:38:19.660 absolutely
00:38:20.740 let me
00:38:21.220 explain to
00:38:21.880 you what
00:38:22.180 I mean
00:38:22.480 first of
00:38:23.020 all
00:38:23.260 I don't
00:38:24.040 like
00:38:24.360 Hillary
00:38:24.880 Clinton
00:38:25.280 I would
00:38:25.720 not have
00:38:26.600 bowed
00:38:26.940 down to
00:38:27.340 Hillary
00:38:27.620 Clinton
00:38:27.980 then
00:38:28.320 I
00:38:28.500 wouldn't
00:38:28.740 do
00:38:28.920 it
00:38:29.060 now
00:38:29.480 she
00:38:30.160 is
00:38:30.540 for
00:38:30.780 me
00:38:31.120 the
00:38:31.440 other
00:38:31.740 side
00:38:32.340 of
00:38:32.620 the
00:38:32.800 same
00:38:33.100 coin
00:38:33.600 that
00:38:34.120 Mr.
00:38:34.400 Trump
00:38:34.800 is
00:38:35.000 on
00:38:35.160 the
00:38:35.300 other
00:38:35.500 side
00:38:35.900 of
00:38:36.140 and I
00:38:36.420 don't
00:38:36.560 want
00:38:36.760 that
00:38:36.980 coin
00:38:37.320 neither
00:38:37.620 the
00:38:37.820 one
00:38:38.060 side
00:38:38.460 nor
00:38:38.900 the
00:38:39.120 other
00:38:39.460 a
00:38:40.000 socialist
00:38:40.580 perspective
00:38:41.320 as far
00:38:41.760 as I
00:38:42.120 understand
00:38:42.600 it
00:38:43.040 has
00:38:44.020 you know
00:38:45.540 finds
00:38:45.980 the
00:38:46.200 distinction
00:38:47.240 between
00:38:47.800 those two
00:38:48.320 of them
00:38:48.800 minimal
00:38:49.580 it's not
00:38:50.460 zero
00:38:50.860 but it's
00:38:51.720 minimal
00:38:52.120 and an
00:38:52.860 excited
00:38:53.380 supporter
00:38:54.020 of either
00:38:54.660 of them
00:38:55.180 you would
00:38:55.860 not find
00:38:56.540 me
00:38:56.860 to be
00:38:57.820 now on
00:38:58.660 the question
00:38:59.080 of Bernie
00:38:59.600 and the
00:38:59.980 interest
00:39:00.380 in quote
00:39:01.060 unquote
00:39:01.400 socialism
00:39:02.160 I go
00:39:03.080 all over
00:39:03.680 the country
00:39:04.180 I really
00:39:04.600 do
00:39:04.780 I interact
00:39:05.260 with these
00:39:05.720 people
00:39:06.060 all the
00:39:06.580 time
00:39:06.920 and here's
00:39:07.800 what I
00:39:08.080 can tell
00:39:08.500 you
00:39:08.640 which may
00:39:08.980 comfort
00:39:09.260 you
00:39:09.520 may upset
00:39:10.080 you
00:39:10.340 I don't
00:39:10.800 know
00:39:11.040 they are
00:39:12.540 not
00:39:13.000 pro
00:39:14.620 socialist
00:39:15.280 whatever they
00:39:15.820 say on
00:39:16.280 their polls
00:39:16.940 what they
00:39:18.080 are
00:39:18.580 is bitter
00:39:19.800 and angry
00:39:21.000 that what
00:39:21.940 they took
00:39:22.720 to be
00:39:23.280 the promise
00:39:24.000 of capitalism
00:39:24.940 isn't
00:39:26.100 available
00:39:26.780 to them
00:39:27.480 they are
00:39:28.280 loaded up
00:39:29.180 with debt
00:39:29.720 going through
00:39:30.260 their college
00:39:30.980 the quality
00:39:31.860 and quantity
00:39:32.500 of jobs
00:39:33.120 they can get
00:39:33.740 with their
00:39:34.120 BA
00:39:34.480 is worse
00:39:35.460 than it's
00:39:35.900 ever been
00:39:36.580 they were
00:39:37.280 led to
00:39:37.780 expect
00:39:38.280 by their
00:39:38.760 parents
00:39:39.280 by their
00:39:39.800 minister
00:39:40.240 by the
00:39:41.020 community
00:39:41.520 they grew
00:39:41.980 up in
00:39:42.480 a set
00:39:44.140 of opportunities
00:39:44.900 that are
00:39:45.400 fast
00:39:46.100 disappearing
00:39:46.800 and they
00:39:47.580 know it
00:39:48.080 from talking
00:39:48.660 to one
00:39:49.080 another
00:39:49.460 they feel
00:39:50.440 to be
00:39:50.840 blunt
00:39:51.300 betrayed
00:39:52.300 by capitalism
00:39:53.580 that's what
00:39:54.640 they're saying
00:39:55.560 when they say
00:39:56.240 well what's
00:39:56.720 wrong with
00:39:57.080 socialism
00:39:57.500 because it
00:39:58.380 really isn't
00:39:59.140 that socialism
00:39:59.800 has captured
00:40:00.760 them or that
00:40:01.820 they even
00:40:02.160 know much
00:40:02.800 about it
00:40:03.380 it's just
00:40:04.220 it's their
00:40:04.840 way of
00:40:05.300 giving the
00:40:05.820 finger
00:40:06.240 to capitalism
00:40:07.480 I agree with what you just said
00:40:09.580 and I totally agree with what you just said
00:40:11.560 but this is the part I agree with
00:40:12.940 let me explain
00:40:13.520 so you said
00:40:14.960 it's not that
00:40:16.720 you know how nowadays
00:40:17.460 they say people don't vote for somebody
00:40:18.960 they vote against somebody
00:40:20.380 you've heard this before
00:40:21.600 you're in time
00:40:21.960 yes
00:40:22.600 so they're bitter
00:40:24.260 at capitalism
00:40:25.240 okay
00:40:25.640 so now go to capitalism
00:40:26.720 so now
00:40:27.340 the next question I'll be asking you
00:40:29.000 is what is the definition of capitalism to you
00:40:31.460 because you went straight from capitalism
00:40:33.780 to college debt
00:40:35.500 that college debt is not capitalism
00:40:37.500 college debt is controlled by
00:40:39.180 the government being able to
00:40:40.880 push every debt through them
00:40:42.780 to find a way to make more money
00:40:44.240 college could be
00:40:45.320 one-sixth of a cost
00:40:46.660 what it is today
00:40:47.300 when you got a Harvard university
00:40:48.960 sitting on 40 billion dollars
00:40:51.000 of endowment
00:40:52.600 and they took an 8.55 million dollar check
00:40:55.220 from the government
00:40:55.840 just two months ago
00:40:56.800 because of coronavirus
00:40:57.960 and they're sitting on 40 billion
00:41:00.060 colleges are more expensive
00:41:01.640 because of government
00:41:02.480 if you look at that
00:41:03.360 debt is higher
00:41:05.400 due to government
00:41:06.300 they don't have to lower
00:41:07.820 the interest rates
00:41:08.580 the way they are
00:41:09.140 to where it is today
00:41:10.340 giving money away constantly
00:41:12.300 to bail people out
00:41:13.780 that's the government's ties
00:41:15.140 that's not a capitalistic system
00:41:17.020 a true capitalistic system
00:41:19.360 is not the involvement
00:41:20.460 of the government
00:41:21.020 trying to bail out
00:41:21.720 some of these too big
00:41:22.360 to fail companies
00:41:23.100 so I'm not coming from a place of
00:41:25.440 let's go bail out
00:41:26.900 another of these big companies
00:41:28.580 and let's not prevent them
00:41:29.600 from going out of business
00:41:30.440 if they screw up
00:41:31.140 they should go out of business
00:41:32.080 but that's not capitalism
00:41:33.480 that is a
00:41:34.280 and I'll finish up
00:41:34.980 and I'll give you
00:41:35.440 turn it over to you
00:41:36.760 that is a interpretation
00:41:39.220 of these teachers
00:41:41.440 who have jobs
00:41:42.980 making 49 grand a year
00:41:45.120 62,000 a year
00:41:47.000 82,000 a year
00:41:48.460 if they're professors
00:41:49.140 or maybe higher-ups
00:41:50.220 private school
00:41:51.320 most teachers
00:41:52.260 you know don't make
00:41:52.820 a lot of money
00:41:53.280 they make 36,000
00:41:54.240 40,000
00:41:54.760 I don't see teachers
00:41:56.600 getting up saying
00:41:57.460 capitalism's awesome guys
00:41:59.360 I don't see that
00:42:00.520 I see teachers
00:42:01.740 for 16 years
00:42:03.440 saying how bad capitalism is
00:42:06.120 and how bad rich people are
00:42:08.040 because they're not
00:42:08.760 the happiest people
00:42:09.500 in the world
00:42:09.940 16 years later
00:42:11.240 these 22 year old kids
00:42:12.260 are like
00:42:12.560 dude these rich people suck
00:42:13.800 and capitalism sucks
00:42:14.720 who's against rich people
00:42:16.360 Bernie
00:42:16.960 I'll freaking vote
00:42:17.960 for this guy
00:42:18.500 that's how I see
00:42:19.460 the process
00:42:19.900 and taking place
00:42:20.660 what do you think?
00:42:21.500 good I'm glad you put it that way
00:42:24.080 so let me tell you
00:42:25.120 how and why I disagree
00:42:26.440 with what you said
00:42:28.300 I find it somewhere
00:42:31.300 between amusing
00:42:33.000 and ironic
00:42:35.220 that the defenders
00:42:37.580 of capitalism
00:42:38.600 have had to resort
00:42:40.000 particularly in recent decades
00:42:41.880 to what I take
00:42:43.400 to be a hustle
00:42:44.580 it's like selling you
00:42:47.580 snake oil medicine
00:42:49.460 that's going to cure you
00:42:50.580 of everything
00:42:51.080 here's the hustle
00:42:52.140 here's the hustle
00:42:52.940 when you
00:42:55.100 when there's unemployment
00:42:56.380 in this country
00:42:57.720 it's because the employer
00:42:59.120 has fired you
00:43:00.220 when you lose your home
00:43:02.540 it's because the bank
00:43:03.740 or the lender
00:43:04.380 has foreclosed on you
00:43:05.880 so when you have a system
00:43:09.140 that periodically
00:43:10.140 every four to seven years
00:43:11.560 has a crash
00:43:12.380 in which millions of people
00:43:14.480 are thrown out of work
00:43:15.540 the instability of capitalism
00:43:17.480 is stupefying
00:43:18.500 or it produces
00:43:20.320 enormous inequality
00:43:21.660 which these days
00:43:22.680 is also stupefying
00:43:23.960 you run the risk
00:43:25.700 that people will in fact
00:43:27.280 turn against the system
00:43:30.200 that they've been told
00:43:31.780 is what they are living in
00:43:33.700 namely capitalism
00:43:34.960 so it was a smart move
00:43:37.180 hustler is a mixed thing
00:43:39.560 good or bad
00:43:40.280 it was a good hustle
00:43:41.920 to say
00:43:43.240 hey
00:43:43.960 given our system
00:43:45.740 it's going to piss off
00:43:47.260 an awful lot of people
00:43:48.660 we need to train
00:43:50.800 those people
00:43:51.660 to blame
00:43:52.980 something
00:43:53.740 other
00:43:54.560 than the system
00:43:56.100 and the target
00:43:57.600 that was chosen
00:43:58.560 and this is very old
00:43:59.940 is the government
00:44:01.520 so you have this phenomenon
00:44:03.380 in America
00:44:04.240 unemployed people
00:44:05.740 don't blame
00:44:06.880 the employer
00:44:07.660 who fired them
00:44:08.740 they blame instead
00:44:10.480 the government
00:44:11.360 they find something
00:44:12.820 that they can point to
00:44:14.160 that the government
00:44:15.340 is the bad guy
00:44:16.640 lying behind
00:44:17.660 and causing
00:44:18.840 the nice employer
00:44:20.360 to fire me
00:44:21.360 or the nice banker
00:44:22.720 to dispossess me
00:44:24.140 of my home
00:44:25.040 and destroy my family
00:44:26.500 and all the rest of it
00:44:27.620 this
00:44:28.400 this remarkable
00:44:29.760 and Ayn Rand
00:44:30.860 is obviously
00:44:31.560 with all of this
00:44:32.920 this notion
00:44:33.980 that the government
00:44:34.880 is the bad guy
00:44:36.220 which neatly
00:44:37.640 avoids the question
00:44:39.040 gee
00:44:39.900 why would the government
00:44:42.060 be the bad guy
00:44:43.420 is that intrinsic
00:44:44.620 to government
00:44:45.380 some people say yes
00:44:47.020 well historically
00:44:47.920 they've been the bad guy
00:44:49.080 historically
00:44:50.880 and in the present
00:44:51.940 I mean the blaming
00:44:52.780 the government
00:44:53.420 is an American pastime
00:44:55.240 it's more popular
00:44:56.280 than baseball
00:44:57.120 not in Iran
00:44:58.220 I lived in Iran
00:44:59.080 we said it
00:44:59.660 I lived in Germany
00:45:00.460 they said it
00:45:01.140 the government
00:45:01.880 historically
00:45:02.620 has been the biggest
00:45:03.520 bully in the world
00:45:04.500 that is
00:45:05.420 that is proven
00:45:06.360 now careful
00:45:07.600 it has been said
00:45:09.120 by people
00:45:09.800 who want the blame
00:45:11.340 for a system failure
00:45:12.760 not to go
00:45:14.240 on the system
00:45:15.260 no
00:45:16.020 that's a bit
00:45:17.680 of a hustle
00:45:18.380 I would explain
00:45:19.480 what the government
00:45:20.240 does
00:45:20.800 because of who
00:45:21.920 controls the government
00:45:23.140 who has the
00:45:24.180 predominant influence
00:45:25.580 governments
00:45:26.360 do what they
00:45:27.740 are pressed
00:45:28.400 to do
00:45:29.120 you know
00:45:29.760 who writes
00:45:30.400 the laws
00:45:31.140 in this country
00:45:31.880 it's the lobbyists
00:45:33.180 and you know
00:45:34.020 I hope you know
00:45:35.040 that 90% of lobbyists
00:45:36.980 come from
00:45:37.720 capitalist enterprises
00:45:39.120 nobody else
00:45:40.100 can afford it
00:45:40.940 you know
00:45:41.800 the big donations
00:45:43.180 come from
00:45:43.780 the richest people
00:45:44.680 who are enriched
00:45:45.520 mostly by big business
00:45:47.220 etc etc
00:45:48.480 the government
00:45:49.380 is the agent
00:45:50.600 not of all of us
00:45:52.260 but of those of us
00:45:53.500 who have the ability
00:45:54.440 to shape
00:45:55.440 and influence
00:45:56.180 what the government
00:45:57.320 does
00:45:57.880 blaming the government
00:45:59.280 is very useful
00:46:00.960 to get the capitalist
00:46:02.080 system
00:46:02.820 off the hook
00:46:03.980 but I don't
00:46:05.480 take that
00:46:06.340 seriously
00:46:07.300 for me
00:46:08.140 the government
00:46:09.320 is another
00:46:10.600 arm of the system
00:46:12.180 the system works
00:46:13.200 some of its magic
00:46:14.800 through private enterprise
00:46:16.020 and some of its magic
00:46:17.580 through the government's
00:46:18.920 shaping
00:46:19.380 and interaction
00:46:20.760 and for me
00:46:22.060 that's what socialism
00:46:23.780 one of its important
00:46:25.380 insights
00:46:26.000 is to understand
00:46:27.460 that the pretense
00:46:29.140 of the government
00:46:29.960 as an independent
00:46:31.560 actor
00:46:32.300 in the society
00:46:33.640 is mostly
00:46:35.000 phony
00:46:36.280 it's false
00:46:37.200 it's not
00:46:37.700 it's not what's going on
00:46:39.220 and that the change
00:46:40.460 therefore
00:46:40.860 can never just be
00:46:42.500 elect tweedle dumb
00:46:45.000 or elect tweedle deep
00:46:46.780 Clinton
00:46:47.820 Trump
00:46:48.700 yes
00:46:49.520 they're different
00:46:50.280 but in many ways
00:46:51.860 they're the same
00:46:52.720 I don't know if you saw it
00:46:54.260 a few years ago
00:46:55.120 Nancy Pelosi
00:46:56.160 was giving a talk
00:46:58.180 somewhere
00:46:58.540 in a college
00:46:59.240 and a student
00:47:00.000 a young man
00:47:00.920 raised his hand
00:47:01.860 and asked her
00:47:02.940 about socialism
00:47:03.900 and you could tell
00:47:05.500 the video was right on her
00:47:07.180 she was very perplexed
00:47:09.080 and she looked
00:47:10.240 kind of befuddled
00:47:11.300 took a few extra seconds
00:47:13.160 and then looked at the young man
00:47:14.760 perfectly nicely
00:47:15.900 and said
00:47:17.040 I really don't know
00:47:18.600 what you're referring to
00:47:20.060 we are all capitalists now
00:47:24.140 I've seen that
00:47:25.160 yeah
00:47:25.700 perfect
00:47:26.440 I couldn't have said it
00:47:28.080 better myself
00:47:28.680 that's exactly right
00:47:30.060 capitalism has two
00:47:31.600 political parties
00:47:32.540 in the United States
00:47:32.960 what's your point though
00:47:33.700 what's your point with that
00:47:34.680 the point is that
00:47:35.740 the government
00:47:36.240 should not be made
00:47:37.660 the fall guy
00:47:38.600 it's not appropriate
00:47:40.240 the government
00:47:41.100 is not an independent
00:47:42.240 it's not the fall guy
00:47:43.580 it's not the fall guy
00:47:44.720 that's not what I'm saying
00:47:45.760 let me explain
00:47:46.180 what I mean by being a fall guy
00:47:47.100 by the way
00:47:47.480 Richard
00:47:48.100 historically
00:47:48.700 you cannot dispute
00:47:49.960 the fact that
00:47:50.720 government's not bullied people
00:47:52.220 I mean
00:47:52.840 you can't dispute
00:47:53.880 I understand today
00:47:54.980 some people are massive corporations
00:47:57.680 they can push people around
00:47:59.020 they can censor people
00:47:59.980 they can do a lot of things today
00:48:01.400 and no one's disputing that part
00:48:03.060 but what I'm talking about is
00:48:05.000 when you're talking about
00:48:06.640 you know
00:48:08.000 the power government pushes around
00:48:10.420 and some things they do
00:48:11.380 so earlier you said
00:48:12.840 you're also not a government guy
00:48:14.340 now you're saying
00:48:15.640 it's an escape
00:48:16.480 that the capitalists use
00:48:18.040 to blame it all on governments
00:48:19.800 so let me ask you this question
00:48:21.180 what is the only way
00:48:23.040 I can have a monopoly
00:48:24.260 with the help of who
00:48:25.260 what is the only way
00:48:27.180 I can have a monopoly
00:48:28.340 can I have a monopoly
00:48:29.640 all by myself
00:48:30.400 is it possible
00:48:31.660 for me to build a business
00:48:33.400 and be the biggest
00:48:34.420 and have a monopoly
00:48:35.380 all by myself
00:48:37.080 or do I need someone's help
00:48:38.300 according to everything
00:48:40.240 that the discipline of economics
00:48:42.380 has ever argued
00:48:43.580 the answer is
00:48:44.960 for sure
00:48:45.960 you can do it by yourself
00:48:47.860 there's no way in the world
00:48:49.180 I can do it by myself
00:48:50.160 no way in the world
00:48:51.620 I can let me explain to you
00:48:52.420 why I cannot do it by myself
00:48:53.320 so there's no
00:48:54.680 I need the laws
00:48:55.820 to be on my side
00:48:56.820 because I need you
00:48:58.960 who work for the state
00:49:00.480 that your campaign's coming up
00:49:02.080 to tell you
00:49:03.000 I need you to make
00:49:03.800 the barrier to enter
00:49:05.000 very very tough
00:49:06.260 and allow me to buy
00:49:07.280 that company
00:49:07.960 for 17 billion dollars
00:49:09.800 to put my competition
00:49:10.760 out of business
00:49:11.420 for me to own a monopoly
00:49:12.820 and without your approval
00:49:14.540 I can't have a monopoly
00:49:15.840 because with your approval
00:49:17.560 if you follow the law
00:49:19.240 I get stopped
00:49:20.260 I can't make certain moves
00:49:21.960 the only way
00:49:22.900 you see monopolies
00:49:23.800 is with the help
00:49:24.580 of the government
00:49:25.540 coming in and saying
00:49:26.400 don't worry about it
00:49:27.380 I'll help you out
00:49:27.940 let's go make this monopoly happen
00:49:29.140 or else it's not possible
00:49:30.380 it's not possible
00:49:31.600 to do so
00:49:32.220 let me give you
00:49:33.260 the counter argument
00:49:34.160 we have two basic laws
00:49:35.540 in the United States
00:49:36.320 against monopoly
00:49:37.240 okay
00:49:37.900 one is the
00:49:39.380 Sherman anti-
00:49:40.160 you know the story
00:49:41.020 okay
00:49:41.300 those laws
00:49:42.100 were fought for
00:49:43.360 by the victims
00:49:44.900 of monopolies
00:49:46.320 that had come into power
00:49:47.960 independent of
00:49:49.360 governmental support
00:49:50.980 the whole purpose
00:49:52.280 of those laws
00:49:53.340 was to not only
00:49:54.880 prevent the government
00:49:55.860 from helping monopolies
00:49:57.760 but to put the government
00:49:59.160 in the business
00:50:00.060 of breaking up
00:50:01.640 the monopolies
00:50:02.920 that had formed
00:50:03.940 on their own
00:50:05.340 in economics
00:50:06.580 here's how the logic works
00:50:08.620 now
00:50:09.680 if you look at the cost
00:50:11.380 of producing a commodity
00:50:13.020 over time
00:50:14.220 the line
00:50:15.300 the cost curve
00:50:16.480 it's called in economics
00:50:17.640 keeps going down
00:50:19.040 it's basically the law
00:50:20.420 of the larger
00:50:21.780 the quantity of goods
00:50:22.800 you produce
00:50:23.380 the cheaper
00:50:23.920 each unit costs you
00:50:25.600 and that's kind of
00:50:26.700 built into modern technology
00:50:28.280 sure
00:50:28.600 so
00:50:29.260 if you have
00:50:30.340 500 firms competing
00:50:32.200 each one trying to
00:50:33.880 capture the market
00:50:34.740 for whatever
00:50:35.760 the one that gets
00:50:37.640 the jump
00:50:38.300 for whatever reason
00:50:39.420 in step one
00:50:40.800 to be able to sell
00:50:42.260 more X's
00:50:43.540 than the other guy
00:50:44.440 will be able to
00:50:45.660 produce at a lower cost
00:50:47.260 eventually
00:50:48.200 when you follow
00:50:49.080 the logic
00:50:49.640 there's one guy left
00:50:51.300 the one who produced
00:50:52.700 the largest amount
00:50:53.920 therefore got it
00:50:55.060 to the lowest cost
00:50:56.300 could charge
00:50:57.240 the lowest price
00:50:58.380 and that would
00:50:59.140 outcompete
00:50:59.740 all the others
00:51:00.560 monopoly
00:51:01.640 is the product
00:51:03.320 of competition
00:51:04.640 the irony of
00:51:06.380 by the way
00:51:07.040 this is in Adam Smith
00:51:08.240 not just Karl Marx
00:51:09.700 and others
00:51:10.180 the logic of capitalism
00:51:12.420 is a competitive
00:51:14.420 system
00:51:15.240 that destroys
00:51:16.680 itself
00:51:17.780 and that has
00:51:18.900 in fact happened
00:51:19.980 and led to the
00:51:21.200 opposition
00:51:21.860 of other companies
00:51:23.500 and the public
00:51:24.600 who don't want to be
00:51:25.660 ripped off
00:51:26.380 by this process
00:51:27.860 can you
00:51:28.400 can you elaborate
00:51:29.200 and define
00:51:29.920 destroys itself
00:51:30.960 what does
00:51:31.440 destroys itself
00:51:32.380 mean
00:51:32.540 like a company
00:51:33.280 I'm competing
00:51:34.400 and then I get
00:51:35.600 too casual
00:51:36.160 too lazy
00:51:36.620 somebody else
00:51:37.160 comes and destroys
00:51:37.860 me
00:51:38.180 is that what you're
00:51:38.860 saying
00:51:39.020 no no no no
00:51:39.620 this is a situation
00:51:41.260 where there's 500
00:51:43.500 companies producing
00:51:44.680 I don't know
00:51:45.260 potato chips
00:51:46.100 and one of them
00:51:47.900 comes across
00:51:48.860 a new kind of potato
00:51:49.860 and it goes better
00:51:51.460 so he can sell
00:51:52.420 more potato chips
00:51:53.600 than the next guy
00:51:54.480 because he can sell
00:51:55.720 10 million bags
00:51:56.900 instead of 2 million bags
00:51:58.420 he can produce
00:51:59.640 potato chips
00:52:00.560 at less per bag
00:52:02.560 than it costs
00:52:03.500 the other guys
00:52:04.200 who produce
00:52:04.680 a smaller amount
00:52:05.860 so because he can
00:52:07.740 produce at a lower cost
00:52:09.160 he drops the price
00:52:11.060 that swings the demand
00:52:13.080 over to his product
00:52:14.960 and away from the others
00:52:16.480 who can't afford
00:52:17.520 to match him
00:52:18.340 because they don't have
00:52:19.260 the low cost
00:52:20.080 since they don't have
00:52:21.000 the big
00:52:21.460 the big output
00:52:23.140 eventually
00:52:24.220 one guy
00:52:25.220 is able to get
00:52:26.380 the entire market
00:52:27.520 and he will produce
00:52:28.760 at the lowest
00:52:29.400 possible price
00:52:30.600 and the lowest
00:52:31.700 possible cost
00:52:32.760 the others go out
00:52:33.800 of business
00:52:34.400 because at the price
00:52:35.660 he charges
00:52:36.520 close to what
00:52:37.740 his cost is
00:52:38.660 they can't compete
00:52:40.460 and so he's left
00:52:41.960 all alone
00:52:43.200 once that moment
00:52:44.860 is reached
00:52:45.620 once he has
00:52:47.280 no more competitors
00:52:48.500 then
00:52:49.960 then
00:52:51.060 he can begin
00:52:52.300 to jack up
00:52:53.080 the price
00:52:53.780 because you don't
00:52:54.840 have anywhere else
00:52:56.020 give me one example
00:52:57.240 give me one example
00:52:58.420 of that today
00:52:59.100 one example
00:53:00.280 of that today
00:53:00.980 why you want it today
00:53:02.760 it's all through history
00:53:03.840 no no
00:53:04.200 give it to me today
00:53:05.180 give me one example
00:53:06.380 of that today
00:53:07.040 microsoft
00:53:08.840 microsoft
00:53:10.040 amazon
00:53:11.120 amazon doesn't
00:53:12.500 have competition
00:53:13.100 and amazon
00:53:13.920 charges up prices
00:53:14.860 what's expensive
00:53:15.740 on amazon
00:53:16.340 amazon has driven
00:53:17.760 almost everybody
00:53:18.880 out
00:53:19.340 but what
00:53:19.900 what is expensive
00:53:21.180 on amazon
00:53:21.800 name me one thing
00:53:23.720 that's overpriced
00:53:24.560 on amazon
00:53:25.020 richard
00:53:25.420 your argument
00:53:26.020 i want to give it
00:53:26.800 to you
00:53:26.940 that's not my
00:53:29.000 argument
00:53:29.620 you said eventually
00:53:30.960 they raised the price
00:53:31.840 i'm just repeating
00:53:32.500 what you said
00:53:33.080 tell me one thing
00:53:34.180 that's overpriced
00:53:34.940 on amazon
00:53:35.400 they're not
00:53:36.220 they're not ready
00:53:36.920 to at that point
00:53:37.840 yet they're not
00:53:38.360 the only deliverer
00:53:39.320 that's just not
00:53:39.960 possible though
00:53:40.760 because right now
00:53:42.280 amazon is scared
00:53:43.180 shitless of walmart
00:53:44.420 right
00:53:45.580 shitless of walmart
00:53:46.920 that's because
00:53:47.460 capitalism works
00:53:48.580 now my concern
00:53:50.000 is the following
00:53:50.920 my concern is
00:53:52.080 bezos moves
00:53:52.800 moves to dc
00:53:53.920 he moves to dc
00:53:55.500 that scares me
00:53:56.500 he moves to dc
00:53:58.300 he gets in the
00:53:59.560 pocket of lobbyists
00:54:00.580 i'm not sitting here
00:54:01.400 you know
00:54:02.100 oh my gosh
00:54:02.780 jeff bezos is the
00:54:03.460 greatest entrepreneur
00:54:04.040 that's not what i'm
00:54:04.480 saying
00:54:04.720 my concern is
00:54:06.120 is his next move
00:54:07.620 is to buy politicians
00:54:09.740 to be able to bully
00:54:11.500 the other guys
00:54:12.300 that's my concern
00:54:13.240 i'm not okay for that
00:54:14.180 but you cannot tell me
00:54:15.460 that the prices at
00:54:16.300 walmart or amazon
00:54:17.720 are so expensive
00:54:18.720 that doesn't make any
00:54:19.820 sense because it's not
00:54:20.440 true
00:54:20.720 well i mean
00:54:22.240 it depends what you
00:54:22.920 mean by expensive
00:54:23.900 but i would tell you
00:54:25.000 that they also
00:54:25.800 make very careful
00:54:27.360 arrangements
00:54:28.100 not to put each
00:54:29.920 other in that
00:54:30.740 competitive
00:54:31.260 situation
00:54:32.340 they're exactly
00:54:33.640 aware of what i
00:54:34.680 told you
00:54:35.160 they're aware
00:54:35.960 that this is a race
00:54:37.160 to see who gets
00:54:38.400 to be the one
00:54:39.160 with the lowest
00:54:39.800 cost
00:54:40.360 and that whoever
00:54:41.320 that is
00:54:42.080 customer wins
00:54:43.060 wait a minute
00:54:43.640 that's the way
00:54:44.160 the game is played
00:54:45.080 and that's how
00:54:45.800 you go out of
00:54:46.500 business
00:54:46.900 these companies
00:54:48.160 then can get
00:54:48.920 together
00:54:49.380 when they've
00:54:50.040 gone down
00:54:50.560 from 50
00:54:51.340 or 500
00:54:52.240 to only 6
00:54:53.140 or 7
00:54:53.620 and then they
00:54:54.520 work out an
00:54:55.180 arrangement
00:54:55.620 the history
00:54:56.360 of antitrust
00:54:57.220 is the history
00:54:57.940 of the government
00:54:58.600 breaking in
00:55:00.120 at those times
00:55:01.200 because like
00:55:02.460 with amazon
00:55:03.000 and walmart
00:55:04.120 there's a reason
00:55:05.120 that that
00:55:05.600 bezos is the
00:55:06.320 richest man
00:55:06.900 in the world
00:55:07.460 and the walmart
00:55:08.380 family is the
00:55:09.160 richest in the
00:55:09.800 world
00:55:10.060 they have jacked
00:55:11.240 up the prices
00:55:12.000 above their
00:55:13.220 cost
00:55:13.520 oh my gosh
00:55:14.420 because they
00:55:16.220 had no competition
00:55:17.120 it's a complete
00:55:18.120 opposite argument
00:55:19.360 the argument
00:55:20.140 is john doe's
00:55:21.720 market
00:55:22.260 in toledo
00:55:23.740 was selling
00:55:24.240 milk for
00:55:24.840 459
00:55:26.120 walmart
00:55:27.100 came in
00:55:27.560 and says
00:55:27.860 this guy
00:55:28.320 is charging
00:55:28.800 it for
00:55:29.120 too much
00:55:29.620 we'll sell
00:55:30.300 it to you
00:55:30.540 for 359
00:55:31.460 john had
00:55:32.020 to lower
00:55:32.400 to 349
00:55:33.260 to be able
00:55:33.620 to compete
00:55:34.040 it's the
00:55:34.660 complete opposite
00:55:35.360 argument there
00:55:36.100 that argument
00:55:37.160 doesn't have
00:55:37.620 weight behind
00:55:38.180 it richard
00:55:38.620 it does
00:55:39.100 it's always
00:55:39.640 been the
00:55:40.080 history
00:55:40.480 you lower
00:55:41.320 the price
00:55:42.060 you drive
00:55:43.120 out your
00:55:43.620 competitors
00:55:44.260 and when you
00:55:45.440 have reached
00:55:45.940 down to
00:55:46.460 three or four
00:55:47.040 not one
00:55:47.420 example of it
00:55:48.000 today
00:55:48.300 there's not
00:55:49.020 one example
00:55:49.520 of it today
00:55:49.960 listen
00:55:50.880 that's the
00:55:51.820 history of
00:55:52.360 the automobile
00:55:52.720 but i'm
00:55:53.060 telling you
00:55:53.540 today you
00:55:54.040 don't have
00:55:54.420 one example
00:55:55.120 of that
00:55:55.480 today
00:55:55.840 one
00:55:56.400 we had a
00:55:57.840 dozen
00:55:58.240 overpriced
00:55:59.280 what are you
00:55:59.700 buying that's
00:56:00.200 overpriced
00:56:01.180 what are you
00:56:01.840 buying that's
00:56:02.280 overpriced
00:56:03.160 everything you
00:56:04.000 buy from
00:56:04.660 amazon and
00:56:05.700 walmart
00:56:06.280 is priced
00:56:07.480 higher than
00:56:08.680 a competitive
00:56:09.520 alternative
00:56:10.340 would price
00:56:11.440 what are you
00:56:11.980 talking about
00:56:12.660 everything i
00:56:13.580 buy on amazon
00:56:14.520 is cheaper
00:56:15.260 than the other
00:56:15.840 places i buy
00:56:16.840 that's why people
00:56:17.920 are buying on
00:56:18.600 amazon
00:56:18.960 so if you
00:56:19.980 would have
00:56:20.240 taken the
00:56:21.440 argument the
00:56:21.960 other way
00:56:22.380 around that's
00:56:22.920 where i get
00:56:23.420 stuck
00:56:23.740 so here's a
00:56:24.500 suggestion for
00:56:25.120 you to know
00:56:25.420 that a
00:56:25.720 capitalist gets
00:56:26.300 stuck
00:56:26.560 the part
00:56:27.740 that i get
00:56:28.280 stuck is if
00:56:29.020 you say to
00:56:29.740 me well what
00:56:30.760 about poor
00:56:31.260 bobby that
00:56:31.780 runs a small
00:56:32.320 market with
00:56:32.880 seven employees
00:56:33.700 and he can't
00:56:34.840 afford to pay
00:56:35.460 the minimum
00:56:35.860 wage because
00:56:37.000 when uh
00:56:37.840 bernie sanders
00:56:38.800 went up and
00:56:39.280 said raise the
00:56:40.260 minimum wage
00:56:40.900 jeff bezos to
00:56:41.800 fifteen dollars
00:56:42.520 an hour and
00:56:44.080 you know what
00:56:44.480 jeff said oh
00:56:45.340 thank you bernie
00:56:46.480 you just put
00:56:47.400 out fifty percent
00:56:48.300 of my competition
00:56:49.080 i will gladly
00:56:50.500 raise it to
00:56:51.400 fifteen dollars
00:56:52.080 and our mr
00:56:52.680 socialist thank
00:56:54.160 you for
00:56:54.460 eliminating my
00:56:55.100 competition
00:56:55.640 why because
00:56:57.180 none of my
00:56:58.040 competitors in
00:56:58.880 toledo kansas can
00:57:00.200 raise the minimum
00:57:00.960 wage for fifteen
00:57:01.680 bucks an hour
00:57:02.220 because it's
00:57:02.720 impossible he
00:57:04.080 officially put
00:57:04.680 people out of
00:57:05.160 business the
00:57:05.860 argument that you
00:57:06.820 could have made
00:57:07.340 for me to say
00:57:08.080 that makes sense
00:57:08.600 is what does
00:57:09.460 that joey do
00:57:09.980 that runs a
00:57:10.400 small market
00:57:10.900 how do i help
00:57:11.640 that guy out
00:57:12.220 him and his
00:57:12.960 wife have been
00:57:13.440 running that
00:57:13.880 business for
00:57:14.420 six years now
00:57:15.180 they're passing
00:57:15.760 on to their
00:57:16.180 kids that that
00:57:17.380 place has got
00:57:18.920 my dad worked
00:57:19.520 out of 99
00:57:20.060 cents or people
00:57:20.680 would come they
00:57:21.200 knew david i
00:57:22.440 once gave a
00:57:22.960 talk in front of
00:57:23.540 a couple thousand
00:57:24.120 people and i
00:57:25.420 kept talking about
00:57:26.060 my dad david and
00:57:26.980 where the off where
00:57:27.740 the 99 cents
00:57:28.580 was on inglewood
00:57:29.420 and he says what
00:57:30.700 does david look
00:57:31.400 like i said like
00:57:32.500 this he says i
00:57:33.040 went to david
00:57:33.620 every week it
00:57:34.160 was an emotional
00:57:34.740 moment for me
00:57:35.400 because it's like
00:57:36.000 they wanted to
00:57:36.640 go to him
00:57:37.140 there is an
00:57:37.880 argument there but
00:57:38.840 there is no
00:57:39.560 argument on prices
00:57:40.680 going up today
00:57:41.280 richard that
00:57:42.160 argument doesn't
00:57:42.760 have weight today
00:57:43.440 i think it always
00:57:44.880 did that's why we
00:57:45.680 have not today
00:57:46.740 sure it does it's
00:57:48.720 the same argument
00:57:49.580 that has existed
00:57:50.740 all through the
00:57:51.660 history of
00:57:52.120 not today though
00:57:53.000 not today
00:57:53.840 where today
00:57:54.940 what is expensive
00:57:56.000 today
00:57:56.480 let's
00:57:57.260 everything that
00:57:58.680 you buy is
00:57:59.240 expensive because
00:58:00.020 you are now
00:58:00.740 you're an economy
00:58:02.100 that has been
00:58:02.820 monopolized now
00:58:04.000 for decades
00:58:04.960 i don't know
00:58:05.420 about monopolized
00:58:06.240 i don't know
00:58:06.960 about monopolized
00:58:07.700 i don't know
00:58:08.600 about monopolized
00:58:09.340 how many competitors
00:58:10.420 to amazon do you
00:58:11.480 think there are
00:58:12.160 depends on what
00:58:13.680 product you're
00:58:14.180 talking about
00:58:14.740 if you're talking
00:58:15.840 about prime
00:58:16.460 in general
00:58:19.020 most people
00:58:19.980 these days
00:58:20.820 are buying
00:58:22.040 online
00:58:22.940 from a very
00:58:24.040 small number
00:58:25.000 of general
00:58:26.080 providers
00:58:27.060 yeah
00:58:27.520 like i said
00:58:29.420 to you
00:58:29.660 i am concerned
00:58:30.560 about amazon
00:58:31.300 moving to dc
00:58:32.580 to hire the
00:58:34.120 best lobbyists
00:58:35.040 and pay them
00:58:35.600 the best money
00:58:36.500 to make it
00:58:37.500 harder for small
00:58:38.300 business owners
00:58:38.880 to compete
00:58:39.380 with the help
00:58:40.140 of government
00:58:40.900 but you're
00:58:41.640 then just
00:58:42.040 jumping into
00:58:42.540 the story
00:58:42.980 at a particular
00:58:43.640 moment
00:58:44.200 amazon understood
00:58:46.140 first it has
00:58:47.260 to destroy
00:58:48.220 all the little
00:58:49.700 department stores
00:58:51.020 and everything
00:58:51.500 that they've done
00:58:52.200 just like walmart
00:58:53.120 one as a deliverer
00:58:55.160 the other one
00:58:55.780 as a brick and
00:58:56.460 mortar
00:58:56.740 okay
00:58:57.240 they did that
00:58:58.360 over the last
00:58:59.020 40 years
00:58:59.940 in cooperation
00:59:01.300 with the people's
00:59:02.280 republic of china
00:59:03.340 for whom they
00:59:04.640 became the mass
00:59:05.600 distributor
00:59:06.160 they took care
00:59:07.600 of wiping
00:59:08.560 out
00:59:09.240 nine-tenths
00:59:10.540 of their
00:59:11.140 competition
00:59:11.900 now they have
00:59:13.560 a de facto
00:59:14.260 monopoly
00:59:14.880 they want to
00:59:16.240 and they can
00:59:16.980 in many areas
00:59:18.080 raise prices
00:59:19.440 above cost
00:59:20.380 because they
00:59:21.480 have no
00:59:22.140 competitor
00:59:22.840 but there's
00:59:23.760 let me finish
00:59:24.420 there's a risk
00:59:25.340 there's a risk
00:59:26.480 that people like
00:59:27.320 you
00:59:27.720 and people like
00:59:29.080 me
00:59:29.580 become critics
00:59:31.100 and that we
00:59:32.460 can reach
00:59:33.140 the victims
00:59:34.000 who are overpaying
00:59:35.260 with our
00:59:35.940 criticism
00:59:36.660 about their
00:59:37.840 operating a
00:59:38.780 monopoly
00:59:39.280 they know
00:59:40.400 that
00:59:40.860 how do they
00:59:41.920 deal with that
00:59:42.980 by the
00:59:44.060 washington post
00:59:45.240 if you're
00:59:45.700 jeffrey bezos
00:59:46.660 put yourself
00:59:47.720 in a position
00:59:48.600 to shape
00:59:50.600 the narrative
00:59:51.400 so that you
00:59:52.420 can now
00:59:53.060 get the
00:59:53.940 government
00:59:54.520 to do
00:59:55.540 what capitalists
00:59:56.560 always want
00:59:57.700 the government
00:59:58.180 to do
00:59:58.860 namely to
00:59:59.800 reinforce
01:00:00.460 to protect
01:00:01.780 and to
01:00:02.520 extend
01:00:03.140 whatever
01:00:04.000 their needs
01:00:05.440 are
01:00:05.960 and in
01:00:06.480 this
01:00:06.740 case
01:00:07.120 it's
01:00:07.620 the need
01:00:08.180 to
01:00:08.420 perpetuate
01:00:09.240 a monopoly
01:00:10.500 position
01:00:11.360 they were
01:00:12.280 able
01:00:12.680 to
01:00:13.340 acquire
01:00:14.960 that's
01:00:15.680 what they
01:00:15.960 do
01:00:16.380 I agree
01:00:17.380 so then
01:00:18.520 the core
01:00:18.880 issue
01:00:19.180 Richard
01:00:19.480 here
01:00:19.700 becomes
01:00:20.140 the issue
01:00:20.700 that goes
01:00:21.820 even deeper
01:00:22.340 that I think
01:00:22.940 about
01:00:23.240 is
01:00:24.100 the issue
01:00:24.980 becomes
01:00:25.620 our current
01:00:26.720 election
01:00:27.320 system
01:00:27.940 and the
01:00:28.400 model
01:00:28.640 doesn't
01:00:29.200 work
01:00:29.620 if I can
01:00:30.940 buy
01:00:31.640 my congressmen
01:00:33.040 my senators
01:00:33.760 my governors
01:00:34.700 my politicians
01:00:35.600 my presidents
01:00:36.420 if I can
01:00:37.480 buy them
01:00:38.300 if I can
01:00:39.220 buy them
01:00:39.980 guess who
01:00:40.820 controls them
01:00:41.560 there's these
01:00:42.580 big too big
01:00:43.320 to fail
01:00:43.640 companies
01:00:44.180 that can go
01:00:44.720 around and
01:00:45.080 push their
01:00:45.460 weight around
01:00:45.960 they can
01:00:46.640 control them
01:00:47.220 you're saying
01:00:47.640 not true
01:00:48.180 no no I
01:00:49.060 agree on that
01:00:49.660 I couldn't
01:00:50.020 agree more
01:00:50.560 so let me
01:00:51.440 ask you this
01:00:51.820 you're somebody
01:00:52.280 that's well
01:00:52.760 read you've
01:00:53.060 been around
01:00:53.300 you have way
01:00:53.920 more experience
01:00:54.400 on this than
01:00:54.840 me
01:00:55.020 what is
01:00:56.460 an alternative
01:00:57.380 to the model
01:00:58.100 that we have
01:00:58.620 today where
01:00:59.240 politicians
01:01:00.160 can't be
01:01:00.700 bought
01:01:00.860 how do
01:01:01.300 you fix
01:01:01.700 that
01:01:01.920 I'm curious
01:01:02.480 well I
01:01:03.760 think you
01:01:04.080 have to
01:01:04.360 change the
01:01:04.860 system at
01:01:05.360 the base
01:01:05.760 you're not
01:01:06.400 going to
01:01:06.660 change it
01:01:07.040 we've tried
01:01:07.540 every reform
01:01:08.520 imaginable
01:01:09.520 those folks
01:01:10.540 get around
01:01:11.180 them they
01:01:11.620 evade them
01:01:12.320 they weaken
01:01:12.880 them they
01:01:13.280 repeal them
01:01:14.080 for me the
01:01:15.060 fundamental issue
01:01:16.260 is the way
01:01:16.820 we've organized
01:01:17.540 the economy
01:01:18.240 and that goes
01:01:19.060 back to the
01:01:19.580 beginning of
01:01:20.060 our conversation
01:01:20.900 Patrick
01:01:21.360 if you have
01:01:22.140 a small number
01:01:22.900 of people who
01:01:23.560 are employers
01:01:24.360 grabbing all
01:01:25.480 the profit
01:01:26.000 into their
01:01:26.520 hand and
01:01:27.320 the vast
01:01:27.760 majority of
01:01:28.500 people are
01:01:29.000 wage earners
01:01:29.800 you've set
01:01:30.660 yourself up
01:01:31.460 to fail
01:01:32.060 those minorities
01:01:33.480 precisely because
01:01:35.240 they are a
01:01:36.300 minority
01:01:36.820 employers are a
01:01:38.340 small special
01:01:39.580 interest minority
01:01:40.560 group in our
01:01:41.260 society
01:01:41.760 they want profit
01:01:43.820 because that's
01:01:44.300 their reward
01:01:45.060 I get that
01:01:45.920 so they do
01:01:46.840 what's useful
01:01:47.620 to that
01:01:48.060 have you ever
01:01:49.380 run a business
01:01:49.900 yes but let me
01:01:50.620 just finish
01:01:51.200 so they buy
01:01:52.060 politicians
01:01:52.760 because that's
01:01:53.520 part of what
01:01:54.300 you do
01:01:54.960 to be a
01:01:55.820 successful
01:01:56.400 capitalist
01:01:57.200 suppose
01:01:57.980 just to answer
01:01:58.740 your question
01:01:59.280 suppose the
01:02:00.500 way business
01:02:01.180 was organized
01:02:02.100 wasn't
01:02:03.180 hierarchical
01:02:04.460 an owner
01:02:05.260 a board of
01:02:05.900 directors at
01:02:06.540 the top
01:02:07.040 a tiny group
01:02:07.980 making all
01:02:09.020 the basic
01:02:09.560 decisions
01:02:10.160 and telling
01:02:11.140 the vast
01:02:11.780 majority of
01:02:12.560 employees
01:02:13.160 where to
01:02:14.060 stand
01:02:14.360 where to
01:02:14.760 sit
01:02:14.960 when to
01:02:15.340 come
01:02:15.560 where to
01:02:15.920 go
01:02:16.220 and keeping
01:02:17.280 the product
01:02:17.840 of their
01:02:18.280 labor at
01:02:18.800 the end
01:02:19.140 of the
01:02:19.420 day
01:02:19.680 if we
01:02:20.220 didn't have
01:02:20.760 that
01:02:21.100 suppose we
01:02:22.000 didn't have
01:02:22.500 that bifurcation
01:02:23.640 the employer
01:02:24.760 and his group
01:02:25.700 and the
01:02:26.280 employees
01:02:26.980 small group
01:02:27.900 majority
01:02:28.720 minority
01:02:29.320 majority
01:02:29.780 suppose we
01:02:31.020 had here
01:02:31.440 it comes
01:02:31.960 a different
01:02:33.160 economic
01:02:33.900 arrangement
01:02:34.680 let's call
01:02:35.920 it for lack
01:02:36.500 of better
01:02:36.880 word
01:02:37.400 economic
01:02:38.480 democracy
01:02:39.340 or let's
01:02:40.080 call it
01:02:40.520 worker co-op
01:02:41.740 here's the
01:02:42.460 way it
01:02:42.800 works
01:02:43.140 everybody
01:02:43.820 in an
01:02:44.420 enterprise
01:02:44.840 is equal
01:02:46.480 one person
01:02:47.920 one vote
01:02:48.940 we decide
01:02:50.260 together
01:02:50.820 what we're
01:02:51.640 going to
01:02:51.920 produce
01:02:52.420 what technology
01:02:53.920 we're going
01:02:54.300 to use
01:02:54.880 where we're
01:02:55.820 going to
01:02:56.120 produce
01:02:56.640 and what
01:02:57.320 we're going
01:02:57.600 to do
01:02:57.860 with the
01:02:58.140 output
01:02:58.620 no split
01:03:00.040 between
01:03:00.440 employer
01:03:01.060 and employee
01:03:01.840 because we
01:03:03.140 the employees
01:03:04.080 are collectively
01:03:05.440 our own
01:03:07.000 boss
01:03:07.680 the desire
01:03:09.140 of 95%
01:03:10.780 of the small
01:03:12.100 businesses
01:03:12.580 I've ever
01:03:13.120 spoken to
01:03:13.860 is to be
01:03:15.180 my own
01:03:16.320 boss
01:03:16.860 here's a way
01:03:17.980 for the
01:03:18.400 employees
01:03:19.020 to run
01:03:20.320 the business
01:03:21.080 and guess
01:03:22.000 what
01:03:22.400 if the
01:03:23.120 employees
01:03:23.680 and the
01:03:24.260 employers
01:03:24.760 are the
01:03:25.160 same
01:03:25.460 people
01:03:26.020 there isn't
01:03:27.200 the split
01:03:27.940 on what the
01:03:28.640 government is
01:03:29.180 supposed to
01:03:29.760 do
01:03:30.140 because if you
01:03:31.300 lower your
01:03:31.880 own wages
01:03:32.440 to make
01:03:32.880 more profits
01:03:33.620 you're just
01:03:34.260 moving your
01:03:34.760 money from
01:03:35.200 one pocket
01:03:35.760 to the
01:03:36.160 other
01:03:36.400 it's an
01:03:37.160 idiot's
01:03:37.820 activity
01:03:38.520 it is a
01:03:39.600 new world
01:03:40.880 which maybe
01:03:41.940 can support
01:03:42.980 a government
01:03:43.640 that genuinely
01:03:44.900 respects
01:03:45.720 one person
01:03:46.920 one vote
01:03:47.760 instead of
01:03:48.720 pretending to
01:03:49.600 do that
01:03:50.240 and you
01:03:50.880 and I
01:03:51.220 both know
01:03:51.960 who controls
01:03:53.000 the government
01:03:53.620 who controls
01:03:54.700 and buys
01:03:55.220 the votes
01:03:55.820 and all the
01:03:56.700 rest
01:03:57.040 you ever
01:03:58.500 owned a
01:03:58.740 business
01:03:58.940 before
01:03:59.360 I've worked
01:04:00.640 on several
01:04:01.180 businesses
01:04:01.680 I've started
01:04:02.420 two or three
01:04:03.200 I've been on
01:04:04.040 boards of
01:04:04.480 directors
01:04:04.960 when you
01:04:05.700 started those
01:04:06.200 two or three
01:04:06.660 what happened
01:04:07.100 to your
01:04:07.340 businesses
01:04:07.740 some went
01:04:09.400 out of
01:04:09.700 business
01:04:09.980 some survived
01:04:10.800 the ones
01:04:11.560 that survived
01:04:12.100 how long
01:04:12.500 did they
01:04:12.780 survive
01:04:13.200 they're still
01:04:13.980 going
01:04:14.400 some of
01:04:14.720 them are
01:04:14.920 30 years
01:04:15.460 old
01:04:15.800 are they
01:04:16.420 profitable
01:04:16.860 or non-profitable
01:04:17.880 it depends
01:04:19.220 on what you
01:04:19.720 mean by
01:04:20.140 profit
01:04:20.540 but they
01:04:20.900 had net
01:04:21.320 revenue
01:04:21.720 and that's
01:04:22.280 how they
01:04:22.540 survived
01:04:23.020 how dare
01:04:24.600 you make
01:04:25.040 profit
01:04:25.520 you ought to
01:04:26.380 be ashamed
01:04:26.840 of yourself
01:04:27.340 Richard
01:04:27.640 to be
01:04:27.980 making
01:04:28.220 profit
01:04:28.740 how dare
01:04:29.980 you make
01:04:30.420 profit
01:04:30.860 off of
01:04:31.300 people's
01:04:31.820 back
01:04:32.220 how dare
01:04:33.480 you run
01:04:33.880 a profitable
01:04:34.400 business
01:04:35.020 you ought
01:04:35.980 to be
01:04:36.180 ashamed
01:04:36.680 of yourself
01:04:37.260 Mr.
01:04:38.200 Professor
01:04:39.060 Richard Wolff
01:04:39.980 that's how
01:04:40.580 we started
01:04:41.120 Patrick
01:04:41.580 I don't hate
01:04:42.380 rich people
01:04:43.080 I understand
01:04:44.320 they're players
01:04:45.160 in a system
01:04:45.880 I'm a player
01:04:47.260 in the system
01:04:47.940 too
01:04:48.280 I breathe
01:04:49.300 the foul air
01:04:50.240 I buy goods
01:04:51.700 that are made
01:04:52.600 in China
01:04:53.180 with the wrong
01:04:54.820 conditions
01:04:55.500 you know
01:04:56.240 my sneakers
01:04:56.800 are made
01:04:57.260 by children
01:04:57.780 in Indonesia
01:04:58.480 I get it
01:04:59.280 I try to
01:05:00.540 avoid
01:05:01.000 patronizing
01:05:02.000 them
01:05:02.360 I don't see
01:05:04.680 a problem
01:05:05.180 with that
01:05:05.460 that's why
01:05:05.980 I'm criticism
01:05:07.340 of the system
01:05:08.240 I don't want
01:05:08.920 to be in it
01:05:09.400 either
01:05:09.740 but what's
01:05:11.080 wrong
01:05:11.320 let me ask
01:05:11.820 you a different
01:05:12.100 question
01:05:12.420 let me ask
01:05:12.760 you a different
01:05:13.040 question
01:05:13.360 are you in
01:05:14.060 your house
01:05:14.460 or are you
01:05:14.760 at a different
01:05:16.260 building
01:05:16.640 in your house
01:05:17.380 in my house
01:05:18.260 who chose
01:05:19.000 the paint
01:05:19.560 on your wall
01:05:20.380 who chose it
01:05:21.120 my wife and I
01:05:22.700 your wife and you
01:05:23.920 okay who chose
01:05:24.760 the
01:05:25.040 if I come to your
01:05:26.160 house and I walk
01:05:26.940 around the sofas
01:05:28.020 and the couches
01:05:28.560 who picked it
01:05:29.180 who chose it
01:05:30.540 both of you
01:05:31.140 what did she pick
01:05:32.640 and you didn't pick
01:05:33.480 who's a better cook
01:05:37.540 you or her
01:05:38.240 honestly I think
01:05:40.700 me
01:05:41.080 make sure she
01:05:42.560 doesn't see
01:05:43.200 this by the way
01:05:44.120 sitting in the
01:05:45.500 next room
01:05:46.000 hearing all of
01:05:46.960 this
01:05:47.220 okay all good
01:05:48.040 what's her name
01:05:48.920 by the way
01:05:49.500 Harriet
01:05:50.120 Harriet
01:05:51.060 hello Harriet
01:05:52.000 anyway so
01:05:53.080 so you are a
01:05:54.500 better cook
01:05:54.880 than she is
01:05:55.560 right
01:05:56.000 yeah because
01:05:57.080 in my house
01:05:58.360 where I grew
01:05:58.960 up
01:05:59.240 we couldn't
01:06:00.440 go in the
01:06:00.900 kitchen
01:06:01.160 the kitchen
01:06:01.640 was the
01:06:02.140 kingdom
01:06:02.420 of my mother
01:06:03.280 and only
01:06:04.480 she could do
01:06:05.280 anything in there
01:06:06.080 her husband
01:06:06.880 my father
01:06:07.440 couldn't get in
01:06:08.120 there either
01:06:08.620 she that was
01:06:09.640 I don't think
01:06:10.160 that's fair
01:06:10.680 I don't think
01:06:11.520 that's fair
01:06:12.000 but you know
01:06:13.060 what it does
01:06:13.600 it makes the
01:06:14.420 children like
01:06:15.040 my sister and
01:06:15.780 I very eager
01:06:17.660 to be and work
01:06:18.920 in the kitchen
01:06:19.560 wow you just
01:06:20.700 explained capitalism
01:06:21.820 yeah you just
01:06:23.400 explained capitalism
01:06:24.880 you just explained
01:06:26.680 the structure of
01:06:27.620 corporation
01:06:28.360 your mother
01:06:29.560 was the chairman
01:06:30.660 of the board
01:06:31.400 in the kitchen
01:06:32.220 and she told
01:06:33.420 you guys you
01:06:33.900 gotta earn
01:06:34.400 your way
01:06:34.720 to get in
01:06:35.100 the kitchen
01:06:35.640 you worked
01:06:36.680 your tail
01:06:37.020 off to learn
01:06:37.460 and now you're
01:06:37.920 better cook
01:06:38.460 than Harriet
01:06:38.960 congratulations
01:06:40.020 I wish she
01:06:41.600 had done
01:06:42.040 what you said
01:06:42.620 I wish she
01:06:43.280 had said
01:06:43.820 you could
01:06:44.600 earn your
01:06:45.160 way
01:06:45.540 but she
01:06:46.340 was a real
01:06:47.140 capitalist
01:06:47.760 you weren't
01:06:48.900 getting
01:06:49.180 I love
01:06:49.660 your mother
01:06:50.120 no matter
01:06:51.460 how hard
01:06:52.220 you worked
01:06:52.840 you weren't
01:06:53.860 getting into
01:06:54.540 the chosen
01:06:55.140 circle
01:06:55.660 and that is
01:06:56.640 you're right
01:06:57.260 that is
01:06:57.960 capitalism
01:06:58.720 you are as
01:06:59.800 well though
01:07:00.220 you are a
01:07:00.640 capitalist
01:07:00.980 because when
01:07:01.580 you cook
01:07:01.960 you said
01:07:02.240 you're better
01:07:02.580 cooked than
01:07:02.960 your wife
01:07:03.320 so if your
01:07:03.740 wife says
01:07:04.220 to you
01:07:04.700 honey
01:07:05.260 this
01:07:05.840 not seven
01:07:06.980 minutes
01:07:07.380 put it
01:07:08.060 for 20
01:07:08.480 minutes
01:07:08.820 are you
01:07:09.240 going to
01:07:09.480 listen to
01:07:09.900 her
01:07:10.120 well it
01:07:11.000 depends if
01:07:11.480 she has
01:07:11.800 a good
01:07:12.080 point to
01:07:12.540 make
01:07:12.720 I'd have
01:07:13.040 to take
01:07:13.380 it
01:07:13.540 seriously
01:07:14.020 but I
01:07:14.440 would
01:07:14.600 who's the
01:07:16.300 final decision
01:07:17.000 maker of the
01:07:17.640 food that
01:07:18.000 you're going
01:07:18.240 to cook
01:07:18.680 it's a
01:07:19.420 consensus
01:07:19.960 no it's
01:07:21.220 not
01:07:21.520 you're the
01:07:22.060 chairman
01:07:22.460 of the
01:07:23.120 food
01:07:24.080 but I
01:07:26.140 my wife
01:07:27.380 would enjoy
01:07:27.860 this because
01:07:28.420 she would
01:07:29.000 recognize that
01:07:30.040 your need
01:07:30.860 for example
01:07:31.700 to have
01:07:32.500 somebody be
01:07:33.220 the chairman
01:07:33.840 that's your
01:07:34.440 accommodation
01:07:35.220 I understand
01:07:36.360 that's how
01:07:36.920 this system
01:07:37.520 works but
01:07:38.400 that's why
01:07:38.860 I'm against
01:07:39.340 I'm giving
01:07:39.920 you a hard
01:07:40.320 time but
01:07:40.700 the point
01:07:41.000 I'm trying
01:07:41.360 to make
01:07:41.680 is the fact
01:07:42.200 that somebody
01:07:42.880 needs to
01:07:43.620 make the
01:07:44.000 decision
01:07:44.380 you know
01:07:44.740 one night
01:07:45.760 I rented
01:07:46.300 I rented
01:07:46.320 out
01:07:46.540 where were
01:07:46.940 we
01:07:47.080 were we
01:07:47.400 in
01:07:47.520 Yucca
01:07:47.840 Valley
01:07:48.180 I rented
01:07:48.540 this house
01:07:49.200 and we
01:07:50.220 went out
01:07:50.720 and I
01:07:51.220 said guys
01:07:51.620 we got
01:07:51.900 to come
01:07:52.140 up with
01:07:52.320 a code
01:07:52.600 of honor
01:07:52.900 we're running
01:07:53.320 the sales
01:07:53.760 office
01:07:54.140 and I
01:07:55.140 said we
01:07:55.300 got to
01:07:55.500 come up
01:07:55.800 with a
01:07:56.160 code
01:07:56.340 of honor
01:07:56.660 on how
01:07:56.940 we run
01:07:57.220 this
01:07:57.380 office
01:07:57.660 so I
01:07:57.900 rent
01:07:58.040 this
01:07:58.220 place
01:07:58.500 we go
01:07:58.820 out
01:07:58.920 I'm
01:07:59.100 hoping
01:07:59.320 we're
01:07:59.560 going to
01:07:59.720 finish
01:07:59.980 early
01:08:00.400 so we
01:08:01.740 can play
01:08:02.560 some
01:08:02.900 games
01:08:03.420 we had
01:08:03.760 foosball
01:08:04.260 table
01:08:04.600 pool
01:08:04.900 table
01:08:05.280 movies
01:08:06.220 we go
01:08:07.340 out
01:08:07.580 there
01:08:07.800 and we
01:08:08.140 said
01:08:08.320 we're
01:08:08.760 going
01:08:08.840 to come
01:08:09.120 up
01:08:09.260 with
01:08:09.380 what's
01:08:09.660 got
01:08:09.780 to be
01:08:09.940 written
01:08:10.160 as a
01:08:10.480 code
01:08:10.760 okay
01:08:11.240 we're
01:08:12.040 going
01:08:12.340 through
01:08:12.600 this
01:08:13.020 and all
01:08:13.840 of a
01:08:14.080 sudden
01:08:14.260 one
01:08:14.580 guy
01:08:14.960 Philip
01:08:15.380 he says
01:08:15.800 what
01:08:15.980 we have
01:08:16.280 to use
01:08:16.500 parliamentary
01:08:17.020 law
01:08:18.800 100%
01:08:19.960 of people
01:08:20.240 have to
01:08:20.500 agree
01:08:20.680 on what
01:08:20.920 the
01:08:21.040 code
01:08:21.180 has
01:08:21.260 got
01:08:21.380 to be
01:08:21.620 and we're
01:08:22.660 sitting
01:08:22.900 I'm
01:08:23.040 like
01:08:23.180 okay
01:08:23.360 let me
01:08:23.580 allow
01:08:23.840 them
01:08:24.080 to make
01:08:24.440 this
01:08:24.640 decision
01:08:24.980 for
01:08:25.180 themselves
01:08:25.460 so it's
01:08:25.740 like a
01:08:26.040 buy
01:08:26.300 let me
01:08:27.160 be
01:08:27.440 this
01:08:27.840 incredible
01:08:28.640 leader
01:08:30.400 that brings
01:08:30.920 everyone
01:08:31.220 together
01:08:31.680 do you
01:08:32.480 know
01:08:38.140 6 in
01:08:40.380 the
01:08:40.560 morning
01:08:40.860 I had
01:08:41.560 a movie
01:08:41.960 for them
01:08:42.340 to watch
01:08:42.820 here's
01:08:43.240 the point
01:08:43.500 I'm
01:08:43.660 trying
01:08:43.820 to make
01:08:44.140 from
01:08:44.760 my
01:08:45.100 experience
01:08:45.980 from
01:08:46.320 my
01:08:46.580 experience
01:08:47.120 my
01:08:47.480 small
01:08:48.180 41
01:08:48.680 years
01:08:49.160 of
01:08:49.660 living
01:08:50.040 from
01:08:50.520 Glendale
01:08:50.920 Community
01:08:51.320 College
01:08:51.720 guy
01:08:52.020 okay
01:08:52.520 I'm
01:08:53.180 a guy
01:08:53.540 that's
01:08:53.780 a
01:08:53.900 regular
01:08:54.160 guy
01:08:54.420 from
01:08:54.600 my
01:08:54.880 experience
01:08:55.560 someone
01:08:56.840 has
01:08:57.220 to be
01:08:57.540 in
01:08:57.700 charge
01:08:58.000 to
01:08:58.180 make
01:08:58.340 the
01:08:58.480 decisions
01:08:58.940 it's
01:08:59.300 very
01:08:59.580 challenging
01:09:00.040 to put
01:09:00.440 it
01:09:00.540 a
01:09:00.640 collective
01:09:01.000 someone
01:09:01.360 has
01:09:01.640 to be
01:09:01.880 a
01:09:02.000 shot
01:09:02.200 caller
01:09:02.460 at
01:09:02.660 the
01:09:02.800 end
01:09:02.980 and
01:09:03.340 typically
01:09:04.260 the
01:09:05.220 most
01:09:08.140 Jordan
01:09:08.280 documentary
01:09:08.800 the
01:09:09.000 last
01:09:09.200 dance
01:09:09.440 you
01:09:09.880 know
01:09:09.980 who's
01:09:10.160 getting
01:09:10.300 the
01:09:10.400 most
01:09:10.560 criticism
01:09:10.960 right
01:09:11.260 now
01:09:11.540 one
01:09:12.080 guy
01:09:12.420 Michael
01:09:13.020 Jordan
01:09:13.400 why
01:09:14.100 because
01:09:14.720 he
01:09:14.840 was
01:09:15.020 the
01:09:15.160 shot
01:09:15.400 caller
01:09:15.700 and
01:09:16.160 a
01:09:16.280 lot
01:09:16.420 of
01:09:16.500 people
01:09:16.640 don't
01:09:16.860 like
01:09:17.100 that
01:09:17.360 but
01:09:17.760 that's
01:09:17.960 just
01:09:18.120 kind
01:09:18.320 of
01:09:18.380 how
01:09:18.480 things
01:09:18.720 work
01:09:18.980 when
01:09:19.120 somebody
01:09:19.440 leaves
01:09:19.760 so
01:09:20.460 what
01:09:21.040 are
01:09:21.220 your
01:09:21.340 thoughts
01:09:21.600 I'll
01:09:21.880 let
01:09:22.380 you
01:09:22.500 kind
01:09:22.700 of
01:09:22.820 rebuttal
01:09:23.340 to
01:09:23.500 that
01:09:23.780 long
01:09:25.140 time
01:09:25.440 ago
01:09:25.700 we
01:09:25.920 believed
01:09:26.520 that
01:09:27.400 in
01:09:27.600 order
01:09:27.840 for
01:09:28.080 any
01:09:28.320 society
01:09:28.860 to
01:09:29.160 exist
01:09:29.640 and
01:09:29.880 function
01:09:38.140 or
01:09:38.640 whatever
01:09:39.100 yeah
01:09:40.080 and
01:09:40.600 then
01:09:40.940 a
01:09:41.280 time
01:09:41.580 came
01:09:41.920 in
01:09:42.080 human
01:09:42.340 history
01:09:42.780 where
01:09:43.200 the
01:09:43.480 mass
01:09:43.820 of
01:09:44.000 us
01:09:44.260 got
01:09:44.960 sick
01:09:45.360 and
01:09:45.600 tired
01:09:45.940 of
01:09:46.240 being
01:09:46.640 the

01:09:47.760 having
01:09:48.540 to
01:09:48.780 live
01:09:49.080 with
01:09:49.340 the
01:09:49.500 decisions
01:09:50.000 made
01:09:50.840 by
01:09:51.040 this
01:09:51.320 clown
01:09:51.720 at
01:09:51.960 the
01:09:52.100 top
01:09:52.440 or
01:09:53.180 even
01:09:53.520 worse
01:09:54.060 by
01:09:54.600 his
01:09:54.940 you
01:09:55.820 know
01:09:56.040 son
01:09:56.680 or
01:09:57.080 daughter
01:09:57.500 who
01:09:58.020 gets
01:09:58.280 to be
01:09:58.560 the
01:09:58.720 next
01:09:59.080 clown
01:09:59.860 at
01:10:00.180 the
01:10:00.340 top
01:10:00.660 and
01:10:01.360 so
01:10:01.580 we
01:10:01.800 said
01:10:02.260 no
01:10:02.900 more
01:10:03.600 monarchy
01:10:04.340 no
01:10:05.180 more
01:10:05.580 we
01:10:06.020 were
01:10:06.180 even
01:10:06.420 mad
01:10:06.900 occasionally
01:10:07.540 and
01:10:07.800 cut
01:10:08.000 their
01:10:08.200 heads
01:10:08.460 off
01:10:08.720 as
01:10:08.940 in
01:10:09.160 France
01:10:09.600 with
01:10:10.040 the
01:10:10.200 guillotine
01:10:10.760 right
01:10:11.160 and
01:10:11.920 people
01:10:12.400 said
01:10:12.660 you
01:10:12.820 can't
01:10:13.240 do
01:10:13.360 that
01:10:13.580 there
01:10:13.800 has
01:10:14.100 to
01:10:14.240 be
01:10:14.560 somebody
01:10:15.260 at
01:10:15.500 the
01:10:15.640 top
01:10:16.000 the
01:10:16.440 one
01:10:16.600 who
01:10:16.760 talks
01:10:17.080 to
01:10:17.280 God
01:10:17.660 or
01:10:17.880 whatever
01:10:18.220 they
01:10:18.480 thought
01:10:18.920 had
01:10:19.640 to
01:10:19.820 be
01:10:20.100 and
01:10:20.580 the
01:10:20.700 rest
01:10:20.940 of
01:10:21.100 us
01:10:21.280 look
01:10:21.500 or
01:10:21.720 our
01:10:21.960 ancestors
01:10:22.460 looked
01:10:22.840 at
01:10:23.000 them
01:10:23.200 and
01:10:23.380 said
01:10:23.680 it
01:10:24.260 doesn't
01:10:24.780 have
01:10:25.080 to
01:10:25.240 be
01:10:25.500 we
01:10:26.020 could
01:10:26.260 live
01:10:26.540 in
01:10:26.660 a
01:10:26.840 society
01:10:27.400 where
01:10:27.900 we
01:10:28.120 all
01:10:28.620 have
01:10:28.920 some
01:10:29.260 say
01:10:29.760 some
01:10:30.280 input
01:10:30.920 we
01:10:31.440 don't
01:10:31.740 have
01:10:32.020 to
01:10:32.160 have
01:10:32.520 one
01:10:33.160 person
01:10:34.200 telling
01:10:34.860 everybody
01:10:35.400 else
01:10:35.880 what
01:10:36.380 to
01:10:36.620 do
01:10:36.940 and
01:10:37.720 the
01:10:37.900 irony
01:10:38.360 I
01:10:38.700 like
01:10:39.420 that
01:10:39.720 I'm
01:10:40.280 glad
01:10:40.680 that
01:10:41.020 happened
01:10:41.460 I
01:10:41.940 support
01:10:42.440 that
01:10:42.740 I
01:10:42.900 like
01:10:43.280 the
01:10:43.540 I
01:10:43.720 support
01:10:44.140 that
01:10:44.440 as
01:10:44.620 well
01:10:44.740 what
01:10:44.940 you
01:10:45.040 just
01:10:45.240 said
01:10:45.540 okay
01:10:46.140 so
01:10:46.660 here
01:10:46.860 comes
01:10:47.140 the
01:10:47.280 argument
01:10:47.680 I
01:10:48.800 don't
01:10:49.540 like
01:10:50.040 having
01:10:51.080 the
01:10:51.340 king
01:10:51.800 who
01:10:52.440 isn't
01:10:52.940 allowed
01:10:53.420 in
01:10:53.740 public
01:10:54.080 society
01:10:54.720 to
01:10:55.440 find
01:10:55.980 his
01:10:56.340 new
01:10:56.640 place
01:10:57.220 inside
01:10:58.180 the
01:10:58.580 enterprise
01:10:59.120 where
01:11:00.120 we
01:11:00.300 allow
01:11:00.720 him
01:11:01.060 to
01:11:01.320 function
01:11:01.880 as
01:11:02.720 the
01:11:03.000 dictator
01:11:03.600 who
01:11:03.900 tells
01:11:04.380 us
01:11:04.720 whether
01:11:05.120 we
01:11:05.360 have
01:11:05.700 the
01:11:05.900 job
01:11:06.280 or
01:11:06.460 not
01:11:06.820 whether
01:11:07.400 we
01:11:07.680 will
01:11:08.020 work
01:11:08.380 over
01:11:08.600 here
01:11:09.120 or
01:11:09.420 over
01:11:09.720 there
01:11:10.240 who
01:11:10.660 takes
01:11:11.000 the
01:11:11.220 fruit
01:11:11.460 of
01:11:11.600 our
01:11:11.800 labor
01:11:12.200 and
01:11:12.660 decides
01:11:13.160 where
01:11:13.540 to
01:11:13.640 sell
01:11:13.900 it
01:11:14.040 and
01:11:14.180 what
01:11:14.340 to
01:11:14.520 do
01:11:14.680 with
01:11:14.840 the
01:11:15.000 revenue
01:11:15.340 why
01:11:16.080 are
01:11:16.300 we
01:11:16.520 allowing
01:11:17.080 kingdoms
01:11:17.860 inside
01:11:18.540 the
01:11:18.960 enterprise
01:11:19.380 when
01:11:20.140 we
01:11:20.320 have
01:11:20.540 declared
01:11:21.000 them
01:11:21.320 unacceptable
01:11:22.260 outside
01:11:23.320 and
01:11:24.260 yeah
01:11:24.680 there'll
01:11:25.280 be
01:11:25.480 adjustments
01:11:26.140 there
01:11:26.520 were
01:11:26.720 adjustments
01:11:27.200 when
01:11:27.480 you
01:11:27.600 didn't
01:11:27.820 have
01:11:28.020 the
01:11:28.220 king
01:11:28.540 it
01:11:28.920 took
01:11:29.120 us
01:11:29.280 a
01:11:29.420 while
01:11:29.660 to
01:11:29.900 learn
01:11:30.380 a
01:11:30.900 little
01:11:31.120 bit
01:11:31.440 with
01:11:31.780 all
01:11:31.980 the
01:11:32.160 imperfections
01:11:33.000 of
01:11:33.420 how
01:11:33.580 to
01:11:33.800 quote
01:11:34.120 unquote
01:11:34.420 govern
01:11:34.980 ourselves
01:11:35.560 we
01:11:36.360 will
01:11:36.600 do
01:11:36.820 the
01:11:37.080 same
01:11:37.840 inside
01:11:38.580 the
01:11:38.820 enterprise
01:11:39.500 since
01:11:40.080 it
01:11:40.260 is
01:11:40.420 my
01:11:40.700 judgment
01:11:43.540 that
01:11:44.940 what
01:11:45.440 socialism
01:11:46.060 really
01:11:46.780 is
01:11:47.340 is
01:11:48.240 not
01:11:48.880 about
01:11:50.020 the
01:11:50.240 government
01:11:50.620 that
01:11:51.120 was
01:11:51.280 19th
01:11:51.820 and
01:11:51.940 20th
01:11:52.400 century
01:11:52.780 socialism
01:11:53.480 21st
01:11:54.740 century
01:11:55.100 socialism
01:11:55.760 it's
01:11:56.580 about
01:11:56.900 the
01:11:57.180 enterprise
01:11:57.760 it's
01:11:58.700 about
01:11:59.080 democratizing
01:12:00.500 the
01:12:00.760 enterprise
01:12:01.480 getting
01:12:02.260 rid
01:12:02.540 of
01:12:02.660 the
01:12:02.840 kings
01:12:03.220 that
01:12:03.520 imagine
01:12:04.080 themselves
01:12:04.760 inside
01:12:05.520 the
01:12:05.920 enterprise
01:12:06.360 and
01:12:07.280 that
01:12:07.680 kind
01:12:08.060 of
01:12:08.200 a
01:12:08.360 socialism
01:12:08.800 from
01:12:09.180 the
01:12:09.360 bottom
01:12:09.640 up
01:12:10.040 will
01:12:10.900 be
01:12:11.140 extremely
01:12:11.980 attractive
01:12:12.700 to
01:12:13.300 the
01:12:13.480 people
01:12:13.840 who
01:12:14.100 are
01:12:14.280 discovering
01:12:14.900 that
01:12:15.480 capitalism
01:12:16.080 has
01:12:16.620 betrayed
01:12:17.280 the
01:12:18.000 hopes
01:12:18.380 they
01:12:18.980 had
01:12:19.260 felt
01:12:19.840 would
01:12:20.760 be
01:12:21.060 satisfied
01:12:21.660 by
01:12:22.140 capitalism
01:12:22.820 but
01:12:23.480 isn't
01:12:23.920 anymore
01:12:24.420 what
01:12:25.000 you
01:12:25.120 just
01:12:25.320 described
01:12:25.720 right
01:12:25.920 there
01:12:26.060 was
01:12:26.220 China
01:12:26.500 the
01:12:26.700 last
01:12:26.940 part
01:12:27.200 of
01:12:27.280 what
01:12:27.380 we're
01:12:27.520 doing
01:12:27.700 right
01:12:27.960 now
01:12:28.360 is
01:12:29.100 speed
01:12:29.420 rounds
01:12:29.800 I'm
01:12:30.300 going
01:12:30.380 to
01:12:30.460 give
01:12:30.600 you
01:12:30.720 a name
01:12:31.120 tell
01:12:31.380 me
01:12:31.480 the
01:12:31.620 first
01:12:31.860 thing
01:12:31.960 that
01:12:32.100 comes
01:12:32.300 to
01:12:32.440 your
01:12:32.540 mind
01:12:32.800 I'll
01:12:33.360 give
01:12:33.480 you
01:12:33.580 name
01:12:33.880 tell
01:12:34.060 me
01:12:34.140 the
01:12:34.260 first
01:12:34.440 thing
01:12:34.540 that
01:12:34.660 comes
01:12:34.820 to
01:12:34.940 your
01:12:35.000 mind
01:12:35.120 Jeff
01:12:35.400 Bezos
01:12:35.900 obscenely
01:12:37.940 wealthy
01:12:38.600 person
01:12:39.360 who
01:12:39.880 is

01:12:42.140 about
01:12:43.040 tens of
01:12:43.820 billions
01:12:44.140 of dollars
01:12:44.940 that were
01:12:45.680 produced
01:12:46.180 by the

01:12:53.200 done

01:14:40.580 who

01:14:41.300 a

01:14:41.640 leader
01:14:41.860 I'm
01:14:42.060 curious
01:14:42.420 like
01:14:42.720 who
01:14:42.900 to
01:14:43.080 you
01:14:43.240 is

01:14:43.720 leader
01:14:43.980 is
01:14:44.140 their
01:14:44.240 name
01:14:44.540 like
01:14:45.080 somebody
01:14:45.440 would
01:14:45.660 say
01:14:45.820 something
01:14:46.180 nice
01:14:46.560 about
01:14:46.760 you
01:14:46.900 seem
01:14:47.100 too
01:14:47.280 upset
01:14:47.560 I
01:14:47.720 want
01:14:47.880 to
01:14:47.980 finish
01:14:48.180 it
01:14:48.320 on
01:14:48.440 say
01:14:49.020 something
01:14:49.380 nice
01:14:49.700 about
01:14:49.940 somebody
01:14:50.380 who
01:14:50.560 do
01:14:50.680 you
01:14:50.760 like
01:14:51.100 and
01:14:51.240 admire
01:14:51.720 who
01:14:53.120 do
01:14:53.240 I
01:14:53.400 like
01:14:53.800 and
01:14:54.080 who
01:14:54.300 do
01:14:54.480 I
01:14:54.640 admire
01:14:55.040 well
01:14:55.680 let's
01:14:55.860 go
01:14:55.980 back
01:14:56.220 to
01:14:56.420 Marx
01:14:56.800 I
01:14:57.740 learned
01:14:58.320 a lot
01:14:58.840 from
01:14:59.240 Marx
01:14:59.980 I
01:15:00.560 would
01:15:00.780 have
01:15:01.040 I
01:15:02.280 was
01:15:02.480 always
01:15:02.940 amazed
01:15:03.980 that
01:15:04.900 having
01:15:05.200 gone
01:15:05.740 through
01:15:06.100 the
01:15:06.340 elite
01:15:06.660 universities
01:15:07.320 I
01:15:07.760 went
01:15:08.000 through
01:15:08.300 Harvard
01:15:09.020 Stanford
01:15:09.580 and
01:15:09.860 Yale
01:15:10.220 10
01:15:10.780 years
01:15:11.140 of my
01:15:11.480 life
01:15:11.880 in
01:15:12.380 those
01:15:12.620 institutions
01:15:13.280 I
01:15:14.620 should
01:15:15.080 have
01:15:15.360 been
01:15:16.620 introduced
01:15:17.220 to
01:15:17.620 their
01:15:17.860 work
01:15:18.280 not
01:15:19.420 not
01:15:19.720 only
01:15:20.080 Marx
01:15:20.560 of
01:15:20.760 course
01:15:21.020 but
01:15:21.260 among
01:15:21.520 many
01:15:21.960 important
01:15:23.080 thinkers
01:15:23.540 of the
01:15:23.880 last
01:15:24.140 2000
01:15:24.660 years
01:15:25.260 you
01:15:26.240 know
01:15:26.340 and
01:15:26.480 I
01:15:26.600 mean
01:15:26.720 reading
01:15:27.300 the
01:15:27.460 Bible
01:15:27.780 and
01:15:28.060 Saint
01:15:28.240 Augustine
01:15:28.820 and
01:15:29.000 Aristotle
01:15:29.400 and
01:15:29.880 Marx
01:15:30.400 instead
01:15:31.560 because
01:15:32.320 my
01:15:32.640 teachers
01:15:33.160 were
01:15:35.000 afraid
01:15:35.460 or
01:15:35.900 caught
01:15:36.160 up
01:15:36.320 in
01:15:36.440 the
01:15:36.600 Cold
01:15:36.900 War
01:15:37.340 they
01:15:37.880 thought
01:15:38.440 the
01:15:38.720 important
01:15:39.140 thing
01:15:39.500 was
01:15:39.700 to
01:15:39.860 keep
01:15:40.140 me
01:15:40.640 as
01:15:41.200 far
01:15:41.540 away
01:15:41.920 from
01:15:42.200 this
01:15:42.460 Marx
01:15:42.860 character
01:15:43.400 as
01:15:44.080 they
01:15:44.320 could
01:15:44.620 possibly
01:15:45.240 do
01:15:45.680 just
01:15:46.920 a footnote
01:15:47.680 in
01:15:48.220 those
01:15:48.540 10
01:15:48.860 years
01:15:49.380 I
01:15:50.200 was
01:15:50.480 never
01:15:51.100 required
01:15:51.680 and
01:15:51.860 I
01:15:51.920 have
01:15:52.040 a
01:15:52.160 Ph.D.
01:15:52.620 in
01:15:52.760 economics
01:15:53.320 I
01:15:53.980 was
01:15:54.180 never
01:15:54.440 required
01:15:55.060 to
01:15:55.640 read
01:15:56.120 one
01:15:56.760 word
01:15:57.660 of
01:15:58.200 Marx's
01:15:58.880 criticism
01:15:59.520 of
01:16:00.200 capitalism
01:16:00.820 that
01:16:01.700 is a
01:16:02.160 comment
01:16:02.600 on a
01:16:03.520 failed
01:16:04.100 educational
01:16:05.020 system
01:16:05.680 and
01:16:07.160 because
01:16:07.640 I
01:16:07.880 find
01:16:08.220 Marx's
01:16:08.680 work
01:16:08.920 so
01:16:09.160 insightful
01:16:09.720 not
01:16:10.540 only
01:16:11.240 not
01:16:11.780 that
01:16:11.940 Marx
01:16:12.240 didn't
01:16:12.520 make
01:16:12.780 mistakes
01:16:13.300 of
01:16:13.640 course
01:16:14.080 he
01:16:14.280 did
01:16:14.560 etc
01:16:15.100 etc
01:16:15.640 but
01:16:16.320 as
01:16:16.540 thinkers
01:16:16.980 go
01:16:17.440 you
01:16:17.940 could
01:16:18.180 do
01:16:18.420 a
01:16:18.720 lot
01:16:19.040 worse
01:16:19.500 and
01:16:19.780 with
01:16:19.980 very
01:16:20.340 few
01:16:20.840 would
01:16:21.360 you
01:16:21.480 get
01:16:21.860 as
01:16:22.360 much
01:16:22.820 powerful
01:16:23.460 insight
01:16:24.060 into
01:16:24.640 society
01:16:25.280 as
01:16:25.760 you
01:16:25.900 get
01:16:26.100 from
01:16:26.380 him
01:16:26.640 so
01:16:27.100 I'm
01:16:27.360 an
01:16:27.480 admirer
01:16:28.120 and
01:16:28.360 the
01:16:28.480 only
01:16:28.640 reason
01:16:28.940 I
01:16:29.160 accept
01:16:29.460 the
01:16:29.660 label
01:16:29.940 Marxist
01:16:30.600 is
01:16:30.980 not
01:16:31.180 because
01:16:31.560 I'm
01:16:31.800 some
01:16:32.040 blinded
01:16:32.640 follower
01:16:33.100 who's
01:16:33.460 uncritical
01:16:34.140 it's
01:16:34.760 just
01:16:34.920 I
01:16:35.140 want
01:16:35.460 to
01:16:35.640 affirm
01:16:36.240 what
01:16:37.280 was
01:16:37.560 denied
01:16:38.100 to
01:16:38.380 me
01:16:38.680 by
01:16:39.140 an
01:16:39.300 educational
01:16:39.860 system
01:16:40.480 that
01:16:41.020 wants
01:16:41.320 to
01:16:41.520 present
01:16:41.800 itself
01:16:42.220 as
01:16:45.640 even
01:16:45.780 close
01:16:46.480 Richard
01:16:49.320 by the
01:16:49.940 way
01:16:50.060 I
01:16:50.300 recommend
01:16:50.700 Communist
01:16:51.080 Manifesto
01:16:51.540 to
01:16:51.740 a lot
01:16:51.960 of
01:16:52.060 people
01:16:52.180 I
01:16:52.320 think
01:16:52.440 when
01:16:52.600 people
01:16:52.880 read
01:16:53.160 it
01:16:53.260 they
01:16:53.380 become
01:16:53.740 bigger
01:16:54.020 capitalists
01:16:54.580 that's
01:16:54.800 the
01:16:54.900 great
01:16:55.100 thing
01:16:55.280 so
01:16:55.420 that's
01:16:55.620 why
01:16:55.720 I
01:16:55.820 recommend
01:16:56.120 them
01:16:56.300 reading
01:16:56.520 the
01:16:56.660 book
01:16:56.840 but
01:16:57.320 Richard
01:16:58.040 where
01:16:58.280 can
01:16:58.620 people
01:16:58.860 find
01:16:59.160 you
01:16:59.240 I
01:16:59.320 know
01:16:59.420 you
01:16:59.520 got
01:16:59.660 a
01:16:59.780 podcast
01:17:00.100 going
01:17:00.500 on
01:17:00.720 and
01:17:00.840 if
01:17:00.960 you
01:17:01.040 want
01:17:01.180 to
01:17:01.280 tell
01:17:01.420 us

01:17:02.380 before
