Valuetainment - The Rise and Fall of Hollywood

00:00:00.000 Something crazy happened in Hollywood. Did you hear about the Academy Awards? Just announced

00:00:03.900 right now, if you want to win Best Picture, to be nominated, what the new guidelines are

00:00:08.100 when they announced this, people lost their minds. They said, these new guidelines, if

00:00:12.300 we follow these guidelines, the following movies in the past, would have never won an

00:00:16.160 Academy. Titanic, Forrest Gump, Godfather, The Hurt Locker, No Country for Old Men, Lord 0.74

00:00:23.220 of the Rings, Midnight Cowboy, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Gone with the Wind, Schindler's

00:00:29.160 List, The French Connection, Silence of the Lambs, All About Eve, Lawrence of Arabia, Casablanca,

00:00:36.160 Godfather 2, The Gladiator, Dances with the Wolves, The King's Speech, I can list so many

00:00:41.140 of them. According to the new guidelines, none of those movies would have ever won an Oscar

00:00:45.420 in the Academy. By the way, it's as if they're not paying attention to data, because just

00:00:49.060 in 2014, nine years ago, 44 million of us watched the Academy. Do you want to know how

00:00:55.300 many people watched the Academy in 2023? 18.7 million. It was the third worst, and guess what

00:01:00.640 the top three worst have been? The last three years. Why? Because when Hollywood goes woke,

00:01:05.700 they lose viewership, and Hollywood has forgotten why it started in the first place. Why they left

00:01:11.060 Jersey and Thomas Edison to go to Hollywood. Wait till you hear about the story of Hollywood.

00:01:16.400 It's going to be a full circle coming back. Maybe a lot of people in Hollywood need to watch this

00:01:20.340 to understand how it got started in the first place. If you give value out of this video,

00:01:23.560 give it a thumbs up. Subscribe to the channel, but more importantly, if you know people in

00:01:26.940 Hollywood, text this to them. Let them watch it, and let them tear it apart. Let's get right into it. 1.00

00:01:32.120 I think Hollywood has forgotten how the whole thing got started. Look, when you and I, as fans,

00:01:36.960 when we think about Hollywood, what do we think about? I think about the star. I think about the

00:01:41.860 Walk of Fame. I think about the big sign in the mountains. I think about Chinese theater,

00:01:45.640 Dolby Theater, but I think about the hub for creativity for movies. I've been to these

00:01:50.340 studios. I've been to shows. I've been to all of this. It's an incredible place with rich history,

00:01:55.080 but Hollywood has forgotten why they escaped Jersey to go to Hollywood. Here's why. Early

00:02:01.540 beginnings of Hollywood, 1900s and 1910s, the Hollywood story began when filmmakers started

00:02:06.360 moving to California to escape the harsh patent laws imposed by, ready, Thomas Edison. His motion

00:02:13.060 picture patent company in Jersey, who owned many patents on the movie-making process and had strict

00:02:17.980 rules and regulations in place for the film industry. When I think about film, I think about

00:02:23.340 creativity. I think about edgy. If you force me to produce a product based on your guidelines,

00:02:28.380 I'm losing creativity. I don't like it. Here's what I think about when I think about creativity.

00:02:33.040 You can't put them in a box, right? You better do this or else you can. I'm creative. Leave me alone,

00:02:39.800 right, to be creative. The second thing is, if you try to force an agenda down the audience's throat

00:02:45.520 and they don't show up, guess what? It's not working. You got to regroup and go back and say,

00:02:51.040 let them be creative. No guidelines. Let the audience produce a product that the customers

00:02:56.040 want to see. Hollywood's forgot about that as well. The golden age, 20s and 50s, characterized by the

00:03:00.880 studio system, the big five studios, Paramount, MGM, Warner Brothers, 20th Century, and RKO dominated each

00:03:07.280 with their own roster of stars. This period produced many of Hollywood's most beloved classics like

00:03:12.400 Wizard of the Oz, Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, It's a Wonderful Life Cycle,

00:03:16.500 and many others. Then we go into the 60s and 80s. This is the post-studio system era. During this

00:03:22.960 time, the old studio system had fallen, and the new Hollywood, this era was marked by films that had

00:03:27.840 a more realistic and grittier aesthetic, such as Great Escape, The Godfather, One Flew Over the

00:03:32.920 Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi Driver, Alien. It was just creative. We're like, man, this is crazy. What's possible if

00:03:38.740 they're doing stuff like this? What could come next? Then in the 80s was a rise of blockbuster

00:03:42.480 films, Star Wars, E.T., Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Die Hard, Scarface, and many others.

00:03:47.900 Then it's the modern era, 1990s and 2000. This is when we see movies like Goodfellas, Fight Club,

00:03:52.720 The Matrix, Pulp Fiction, Toy Story, Lord of the Rings, The Departed, Gladiator, The Dark Knight,

00:03:57.060 and many others. And by the way, at this time, we're not caring about how many Middle Easterners are in 0.81

00:04:01.560 the movie. I'm Middle Eastern. Can you imagine? I don't like The Dark Knight because I think Batman needs to be

00:04:05.960 from Iran. What do you mean he needs to be from Iran? No. Let's cast and see who's the best Batman,

00:04:11.980 okay? If that guy's the best Batman, let him be. Not because I'm upset because there's not enough

00:04:16.840 Middle Easterners in there or not enough women or not enough this. I want to see a good film. When 1.00

00:04:21.160 I'm watching a good film, I don't sit there and calculate and say, you know what? They're missing

00:04:25.120 too many of this. They're missing too many. I say, what a great movie. I'm not even thinking about any of

00:04:29.200 that stuff, but that's the mistake Academy is making to them. Trust me, they're paying the price for it

00:04:33.240 already, but they're not paying attention to data. Then we have 2010s to present. Increasing

00:04:38.160 diversity and representation, both in front of the camera as well as behind the camera,

00:04:41.800 driven by social media activism, increased calls for diversity. High profile example includes

00:04:46.640 Black Panther in 2018, Wonder Woman 2017, Moonlight 2016, and the woke remakes of Ghostbusters in 2016,

00:04:53.340 Star Wars in 17, Oceans 8 and 18, American Pie Girls Rules in 2020, which many of you probably

00:04:58.840 haven't even seen. This time it was kind of like, well, we should do this because we ought to consider

00:05:02.540 having more people in this background, that background. Okay, no problem, but it was still

00:05:06.120 something that was being encouraged. All of a sudden, a couple events happened. That's not

00:05:10.280 calling the Academy to force producers to do this, or else you're not going to be nominated.

00:05:15.760 Couple events. Number one, 2015 and 2016, the hashtag Oscars so white controversy, when all 20 actors

00:05:22.520 nominated in the lead and supporting actor categories were white. This led to widespread criticism

00:05:27.080 and calls for greater diversity in the film industry. In response, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts

00:05:31.460 and Sciences implemented change to diversify its membership. Then in 2017, with the Me Too movement,

00:05:36.780 when Harvey Weinstein was finally exposed for what he was doing to corruption and other power players

00:05:41.560 that were abusing their power against women, of course, that had to be exposed. It was something

00:05:45.480 that was necessary, but then that got people to say, well, what are we doing about it? And a lot of

00:05:49.360 people started complaining, but rather than finding ways to address the issue, they started putting

00:05:54.320 force and mandates in Hollywood. And when you do that, unfortunately, you eliminate creativity.

00:05:59.040 In 2021, Hollywood Diversity Bill passes California legislature, and here's what it was.

00:06:03.980 California's film tax credit aims to punish projects that don't hit diversity goals. Under a

00:06:08.800 proposal from the governor's office, Newsom, productions that fail to meet the diversity

00:06:12.780 goal will lose 4% of their tax credit allocation and a 4% bonus for productions that meet diversity

00:06:18.820 goals. The provision is part of a five-year extension of the state's $330 million tax credit.

00:06:23.880 Productions that receive the credit will be required to submit a diversity work plan under which

00:06:28.960 they must commit to hire a crew that is broadly reflective of the state's demographics.

00:06:33.900 Look, the way we get judged in business or in politics is your policies you come out with.

00:06:39.080 If they're great, results should go up because it's all about data. If it doesn't, it goes down.

00:06:43.760 It's a shitty idea. I've run a sales organization for 20-some years. If I change the commission

00:06:47.620 structure and all of a sudden sales skyrocket and good behavior comes out, great. That was a good

00:06:52.660 idea. But I've come out many times with a commission structure that sales dip. Guess what?

00:06:57.120 Whether you like it or not, it's not a good idea. You've got to figure it out.

00:07:00.120 A Tim's donut and coffee is the original collab. And now, any classic donut is a dollar when you

00:07:04.620 buy any size original or dark roast coffee. Get a deal on the iconic duo with a Tim's dollar donut

00:07:09.580 plus tax at participating restaurants for limited time. Terms apply. See app for details.

00:07:13.220 It's time for Tim's.

00:07:15.140 Graduate or Justin, right? California passes this bill in 2021, okay? If viewership goes up with the

00:07:21.760 academies, then good idea, Newsom. But if it doesn't, it's probably a bad idea. Again,

00:07:26.500 2014, 44 million of us watched the Academy Awards. Last year, 2023, this year, it's 18.7. He's not

00:07:35.540 helping. However, let's see what happened in California. In 1920, 95% of films being made were

00:07:42.720 based out of California. Let's see what it's looking like today. And let's first look at what

00:07:46.660 states are leading the movies being made. The data that we have is from 2021. At the top, California,

00:07:52.560 574. The feature films were produced in California. Number two is New York at 91. Georgia, 71. New

00:07:58.180 Mexico, 60. Louisiana, 56. Matter of fact, the top five control 80% of them. Then it's Texas, 45.

00:08:03.880 Carolina, 38. Michigan, 35. Tennessee, 34. Illinois, 33. By the way, if you look at the list,

00:08:08.720 Florida's not even in the top 10 list. We, Valuetainment, plans on building one of the biggest

00:08:13.700 media companies in the world doing movies, docs, shows, podcasts, all of that out of Florida. And we're

00:08:18.500 constantly hiring. Complete side note. If you are looking for a gig, you got a lot of talent. Look

00:08:22.260 at our job openings. I'll link below. You can find it. More importantly, if you're somebody that's a 0.99

00:08:26.860 diehard value-tainer and you love the Valuetainment gear, this is by far one of my favorite shirts.

00:08:31.980 It feels so good wearing this shirt, but the new logo, Valuetainment's on it. If you want to support

00:08:36.520 the Valuetainment gear, click on the link above or below. Order one of these shirts. It's sick. That's all

00:08:41.160 I can tell you. So let's go back to it. California, 1920s. 95% of the movies made in Hollywood were

00:08:50.260 based out of California. In 30s, it goes to 90. In 40s, it goes back up to 95. Then it

00:08:55.400 goes 90, 85, 80, 75, 70, 65, 60, 55. It went from 95% to 55. And the more regulation they

00:09:05.420 create, people are going to leave California to make movies. Where am I going with this?

00:09:09.400 So this is just California losing market shirt. Look what the academies just announced to make

00:09:15.440 regulation to be even mentioned or nominated for best picture in 2024 moving forward.

00:09:21.660 Their guidelines are even stricter than California's guidelines. All right. So here's what the new

00:09:26.540 requirements include. Number one, at least one of the lead actors or significant supporting actors

00:09:30.960 must be from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group. Number two, at least 30% of all actors in

00:09:37.540 secondary and more minor roles must be from at least two underrepresented groups. Number three,

00:09:43.500 the main storyline theme or narrative of the film must be centered on an underrepresented group.

00:09:49.600 Number four, at least two of the creative leadership positions and department heads must be from

00:09:54.820 underrepresented groups. Number five, at least six other crew and technical positions must be from an

00:10:00.620 underrepresented racial or ethnic group. And number six, the distribution or financing company

00:10:05.420 must have paid apprenticeship or internship for underrepresented groups. Are you already like

00:10:14.360 losing your mind asking if this is a spoof or satire article? This is actually their new guidelines. And you

00:10:20.280 may be asking, Pat, what is considered an underrepresented group? Here's what's defined as

00:10:24.940 underrepresented group. Number one, women. Two, people of color. Three, LGBTQ plus people. Four, people with

00:10:32.700 disabilities. Five, people with low-income communities. Six, people from rural areas. Seven, people from

00:10:39.300 indigenous heritage. Again, earlier I mentioned to you all those movies that won academies, the greatest

00:10:43.920 movies of all time that won an academy. None of them would be nominated according to these new

00:10:47.560 guidelines. They just wouldn't be nominated. And they're fantastic movies. And when you and I

00:10:52.040 watched it, we didn't think about why there's no Middle Easterns in there. Why there's no this in there.

00:10:56.640 But today, the rally cry is so big that they want to change it. So what could happen here? Let me give you a

00:11:01.560 couple different industries to look at our sects. The NBA, okay, a product that I loved watching for many

00:11:08.280 years. Did you know 73.2% of players in the NBA are black? Did you know only 12.5% of America is black? What

00:11:15.720 should we do? Should we lower that 73% and only allow 12.5% of blacks to play basketball because we have to be 1.00

00:11:23.760 diverse? You know, it has to be fair, right? Because only 13% of players are white. 3% are Latino. Well, nearly 20%.

00:11:31.540 24% of America is Latino. Why don't we have more Latino players? Did you know only 0.4% are Asian? We can look

00:11:36.420 at a couple others, but we can look at NFL. 56% are black. Only 12.5% of America is black. By the way, we can look at

00:11:41.380 Major League Baseball and say, well, how about Major League Baseball? Only 5.6% are black players in Major League

00:11:46.760 Baseball. But 31.2% is Hispanic. We have one too many Hispanics playing in baseball. We can look at NHL. NHL is a 1.00

00:11:52.660 complete different statistic. 84% of folks in NHL are white. Do you realize how ridiculous this is?

00:11:58.760 People are forcing things to win that we are not interested in and forcing things to change that 0.76

00:12:05.340 we're interested in. Nobody watches the NBA and says, too many black players. No. It's great. It's

00:12:11.980 whoever can perform and win at the highest level. Nobody watches baseball and says, one too many

00:12:16.900 Hispanics. What is the difference with Hollywood? Why is Hollywood doing this? We got to make WNBA

00:12:22.660 better because we only have 456,000 people watching the WNBA playoffs and the finals, but we have 17

00:12:29.380 million. That's not fair. No. People are not as interested in WNBA as they are in the NBA. It's

00:12:35.720 very simple. It's called interest. You can't force interest. If I try to force my kid to like a sport

00:12:44.460 he does not like, he's not going to like it. He's going to hate it. There's no difference between

00:12:49.600 that. We have to be interested in it. And Hollywood, unfortunately, is trying to force people to be 0.98

00:12:56.160 interested in a product that they're not interested in and they're paying a price for it. And by the

00:13:00.460 way, if Hollywood has left California to other states, trust me, Hollywood will very soon leave

00:13:06.980 America and do movies in other states because the world is a very small place today with the OTTs. 0.99

00:13:12.140 They're also going to pay a price for it. And not only that, do not be surprised if very soon people

00:13:16.760 say, I don't really care if I'm nominated for an Academy Award or not. I simply don't care.

00:13:23.080 Funds are going to come out saying we are funding movies that don't care about winning an Academy

00:13:28.960 Award. And the credibility of the Academy Award is going to get smaller and smaller and smaller and

00:13:33.980 smaller. And eventually people are going to be like, yeah, I really don't care. It's still going to

00:13:37.920 matter today for the next couple of decades. But this kind of strategy, history tells us

00:13:41.900 eventually they'll either have to pivot and someone's going to have to knock some senses

00:13:46.620 into them. Or they're going to say, honestly, you keep forcing your crowd to all do this the

00:13:51.260 way you're doing it. We're going elsewhere. It's always been that way. If you're watching this,

00:13:55.160 you're from Hollywood. You're pissed off on what I said. I totally get it. You don't agree with me

00:13:58.340 on where I'm at, you know, philosophic and all this stuff. This is the only thing I ask you.

00:14:01.920 We love the content you create. Hollywood, when we watch you, when you're just trying to play

00:14:10.020 loose and tell a story without force. When you force, we don't like it. That's how simple it is.

00:14:15.320 Stuck in that winter slump? Try Dove Men plus Care Aluminum Free Deodorant. All it takes is a small

00:14:22.160 change to your routine to lift your mood. And it can be as simple as starting your day with the

00:14:31.080 fresh for up to 72 hours. And when you smell good, you feel good. Visit dove.com to learn more.

00:14:38.020 And by the way, making movies is one of the most effective ways of telling stories and

00:14:45.820 changing people's perspective by choice, not by force. If you do force, you're going to lose

00:14:51.480 an audience. If you do it by choice, we'll follow you. Anyways, I got another video I want you to

00:14:55.720 watch. You may not like it. If you haven't liked this video, do not watch this next video. If you've

00:14:59.420 liked this video, you're going to like the next video. It's a video directed to people from California.

00:15:04.640 I would warn you because it's going to trigger many of you who are emotionally attached to your

00:15:10.020 great state of California, a state I love that I lived in for 24 years. If you've never seen it,

00:15:15.200 go watch this. If you don't want to be pissed off and you are emotionally attached, I'm telling you,

00:15:18.900 avoid watching this video. Anyways, you got value from it. Give it a thumbs up. Subscribe to the channel.

00:15:23.180 Take care, everybody. Bye-bye, bye-bye.
