00:01:55.080 but Hollywood has forgotten why they escaped Jersey to go to Hollywood. Here's why. Early

00:02:01.540 beginnings of Hollywood, 1900s and 1910s, the Hollywood story began when filmmakers started

00:02:06.360 moving to California to escape the harsh patent laws imposed by, ready, Thomas Edison. His motion

00:02:17.980 rules and regulations in place for the film industry. When I think about film, I think about

00:02:23.340 creativity. I think about edgy. If you force me to produce a product based on your guidelines,

00:02:28.380 I'm losing creativity. I don't like it. Here's what I think about when I think about creativity.

00:03:16.500 and many others. Then we go into the 60s and 80s. This is the post-studio system era. During this

00:03:22.960 time, the old studio system had fallen, and the new Hollywood, this era was marked by films that had

00:03:27.840 a more realistic and grittier aesthetic, such as Great Escape, The Godfather, One Flew Over the

00:03:32.920 Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi Driver, Alien. It was just creative. We're like, man, this is crazy. What's possible if

00:03:38.740 they're doing stuff like this? What could come next? Then in the 80s was a rise of blockbuster

00:03:42.480 films, Star Wars, E.T., Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Die Hard, Scarface, and many others.

00:03:47.900 Then it's the modern era, 1990s and 2000. This is when we see movies like Goodfellas, Fight Club,

00:03:52.720 The Matrix, Pulp Fiction, Toy Story, Lord of the Rings, The Departed, Gladiator, The Dark Knight,

00:03:57.060 and many others. And by the way, at this time, we're not caring about how many Middle Easterners are in 0.81

00:04:46.640 Black Panther in 2018, Wonder Woman 2017, Moonlight 2016, and the woke remakes of Ghostbusters in 2016,

00:04:53.340 Star Wars in 17, Oceans 8 and 18, American Pie Girls Rules in 2020, which many of you probably

00:04:58.840 haven't even seen. This time it was kind of like, well, we should do this because we ought to consider

00:05:02.540 having more people in this background, that background. Okay, no problem, but it was still

00:05:06.120 something that was being encouraged. All of a sudden, a couple events happened. That's not

00:05:10.280 calling the Academy to force producers to do this, or else you're not going to be nominated.

00:05:15.760 Couple events. Number one, 2015 and 2016, the hashtag Oscars so white controversy, when all 20 actors

00:05:22.520 nominated in the lead and supporting actor categories were white. This led to widespread criticism

00:05:27.080 and calls for greater diversity in the film industry. In response, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts

00:05:31.460 and Sciences implemented change to diversify its membership. Then in 2017, with the Me Too movement,

00:05:36.780 when Harvey Weinstein was finally exposed for what he was doing to corruption and other power players

00:05:41.560 that were abusing their power against women, of course, that had to be exposed. It was something

00:05:45.480 that was necessary, but then that got people to say, well, what are we doing about it? And a lot of

00:05:49.360 people started complaining, but rather than finding ways to address the issue, they started putting

00:05:54.320 force and mandates in Hollywood. And when you do that, unfortunately, you eliminate creativity.

00:05:59.040 In 2021, Hollywood Diversity Bill passes California legislature, and here's what it was.

00:06:03.980 California's film tax credit aims to punish projects that don't hit diversity goals. Under a

00:06:08.800 proposal from the governor's office, Newsom, productions that fail to meet the diversity

00:06:12.780 goal will lose 4% of their tax credit allocation and a 4% bonus for productions that meet diversity

00:06:18.820 goals. The provision is part of a five-year extension of the state's $330 million tax credit.

00:06:23.880 Productions that receive the credit will be required to submit a diversity work plan under which

00:06:28.960 they must commit to hire a crew that is broadly reflective of the state's demographics.

00:07:52.560 574. The feature films were produced in California. Number two is New York at 91. Georgia, 71. New

00:07:58.180 Mexico, 60. Louisiana, 56. Matter of fact, the top five control 80% of them. Then it's Texas, 45.

00:08:03.880 Carolina, 38. Michigan, 35. Tennessee, 34. Illinois, 33. By the way, if you look at the list,

00:09:05.420 create, people are going to leave California to make movies. Where am I going with this?

00:09:15.440 regulation to be even mentioned or nominated for best picture in 2024 moving forward.

00:09:21.660 Their guidelines are even stricter than California's guidelines. All right. So here's what the new

00:09:26.540 requirements include. Number one, at least one of the lead actors or significant supporting actors

00:09:30.960 must be from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group. Number two, at least 30% of all actors in

00:09:37.540 secondary and more minor roles must be from at least two underrepresented groups. Number three,

00:09:43.500 the main storyline theme or narrative of the film must be centered on an underrepresented group.

00:09:49.600 Number four, at least two of the creative leadership positions and department heads must be from

00:09:54.820 underrepresented groups. Number five, at least six other crew and technical positions must be from an

00:10:00.620 underrepresented racial or ethnic group. And number six, the distribution or financing company

00:10:05.420 must have paid apprenticeship or internship for underrepresented groups. Are you already like

00:10:14.360 losing your mind asking if this is a spoof or satire article? This is actually their new guidelines. And you

00:10:20.280 may be asking, Pat, what is considered an underrepresented group? Here's what's defined as

00:10:24.940 underrepresented group. Number one, women. Two, people of color. Three, LGBTQ plus people. Four, people with

00:10:32.700 disabilities. Five, people with low-income communities. Six, people from rural areas. Seven, people from

00:10:39.300 indigenous heritage. Again, earlier I mentioned to you all those movies that won academies, the greatest

00:10:43.920 movies of all time that won an academy. None of them would be nominated according to these new

00:10:47.560 guidelines. They just wouldn't be nominated. And they're fantastic movies. And when you and I

00:10:52.040 watched it, we didn't think about why there's no Middle Easterns in there. Why there's no this in there.

00:10:56.640 But today, the rally cry is so big that they want to change it. So what could happen here? Let me give you a

00:11:01.560 couple different industries to look at our sects. The NBA, okay, a product that I loved watching for many

00:11:08.280 years. Did you know 73.2% of players in the NBA are black? Did you know only 12.5% of America is black? What

00:11:15.720 should we do? Should we lower that 73% and only allow 12.5% of blacks to play basketball because we have to be 1.00

00:11:23.760 diverse? You know, it has to be fair, right? Because only 13% of players are white. 3% are Latino. Well, nearly 20%.

00:11:31.540 24% of America is Latino. Why don't we have more Latino players? Did you know only 0.4% are Asian? We can look

00:11:36.420 at a couple others, but we can look at NFL. 56% are black. Only 12.5% of America is black. By the way, we can look at

00:11:41.380 Major League Baseball and say, well, how about Major League Baseball? Only 5.6% are black players in Major League

00:11:46.760 Baseball. But 31.2% is Hispanic. We have one too many Hispanics playing in baseball. We can look at NHL. NHL is a 1.00

00:11:52.660 complete different statistic. 84% of folks in NHL are white. Do you realize how ridiculous this is?

00:12:49.600 that. We have to be interested in it. And Hollywood, unfortunately, is trying to force people to be 0.98
