00:02:01.700 You're listening to the 47 Morning Update with Ben Ferguson.
00:02:05.660 Good Tuesday morning.
00:02:06.740 Nice to have you with us on the 47 Morning Update,
00:02:08.880 and we've got two stories for you.
00:02:10.640 Donald Trump says Iran talks are underway right now, calling the deal the last chance before decapitation.
00:02:18.760 Second up, the president also said that if Iran doesn't agree to this deal,
00:02:23.700 well, then it's going to be an attack that we haven't seen since World War II.
00:02:28.060 So what happens next and who is behind this deal and getting it done?
00:02:32.800 We explain it all.
00:02:34.340 It's the 47 Morning Update and it starts right now.
00:02:37.680 Story number one.
00:02:38.760 President Donald Trump on Monday said that negotiations with Iran, well, they're already underway and calling the current talks Tehran's last chance, his exact words before what he warned would be a military campaign larger than any attack since World War Two, while insisting he would rather pursue diplomacy than authorize such a military operation.
00:03:04.120 Now, the president was speaking in the Oval Office and Trump said that he had delayed the planned strikes after Iran, backed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, as well as other regional countries, called and urged the president to give diplomacy yet again another chance.
00:03:24.620 The president saying this from the Oval Office.
00:03:27.600 thank you very much mr president this is at least the fifth time you've turned off airstrikes
00:03:33.120 since april yeah to negotiate what is your message to the american people who are wondering what
00:03:38.580 has changed this time why should it well you don't know i don't know i think we're gonna
00:03:42.720 maybe get something but i want to give them every last chance before decapitation
00:03:47.420 very tough to do without what we have planned still planned we'll see what happens but it's
00:03:55.620 very very tough thing to do i think uh i'm very proud of the fact that i will give people a chance
00:04:02.420 this is a big move to do an attack that big on a country i'd rather not do it now we've already
00:04:10.020 through lots of large attacks but they were normal large hopefully they'll come to their senses
00:04:18.740 because what happened can cannot have a nuclear weapon but hopefully they'll come to their senses
00:04:24.180 so they called me and they said please don't attack we'll make a deal that's the real truth
00:04:31.600 and everyone knows it and who wouldn't call and they found out through leaks and sleazebags you
00:04:40.100 know a lot of sleazebags leak leakers leakers should be put in jail they should they have to
00:04:44.660 strengthen up the laws for leakers but in this case leakers helped because they said the severity
00:04:50.000 of the attack and iran knew it they knew what was coming it was going to come last night
00:04:57.620 and it would have gone on for a long time and there'd be essentially very little left there'd
00:05:03.840 be nothing left and if i'm given a chance to let a lot of people live i want to give that chance
00:05:14.540 Now, the president was pressed after that on why he was again delaying threatening strikes after repeatedly holding off on military action in recent weeks and now months.
00:05:25.160 As you heard, the president said, look, I want to give them every last chance before decapitation.
00:05:32.560 Now, Trump said he is still on hold for major military operations.
00:05:37.380 And he said he's absolutely prepared if diplomacy yet again fails.
00:05:43.840 He said, quote, very tough to do what we have planned, still planned. 0.89
00:05:47.980 We'll see what happens, referring to what's next from Iran.
00:05:52.740 He also went on to say, if I'm given a chance to let a lot of people live, I want to give them that chance.
00:05:59.000 This is the opposite of what the media and with the opposite of what the left said.
00:06:02.980 They said the president was trying to start World War Three.
00:06:05.540 He was willing to kill anybody.
00:06:07.360 Obviously, that's not true.
00:06:09.540 The president describing as a big move to do an attack that big on a country, I'd rather not do it.
00:06:15.660 Yet again, the president showing peace through strength.
00:06:19.300 Now, President Trump also disputed Iran's claims that no U.S.-Iran negotiations are taking place,
00:06:26.520 saying discussions are already underway despite Tehran's public denials, saying the talks are going on right now.
00:06:32.480 We are talking right now at the request of Iran, backed by Saudi Arabia, backed by the UAE, and backed by Qatar.
00:06:39.700 The president was also asked about this last chance, and the president described it this way. 0.66
00:06:45.200 It's the last chance for these people, the Iranians, to sign a good document. 1.00
00:06:49.900 I don't like saying that they're talking. 1.00
00:06:51.800 So I say, wait, we're in talks. Big deal. We're in talks.
00:06:55.180 And they'll sometimes deny it, even though they spend hours and hours together talking.
00:07:00.520 no the talks are going along we're going to hit them very hard yesterday very very hard harder than
00:07:07.720 any attack i think i can say generals from a point of knowledge any attack since world war ii that's
00:07:16.040 pretty big and we were set to go and they called and in addition saudi arabia called and uh uae
00:07:24.440 called guitar called i called some numerous people not i don't use the word begging but some
00:07:31.560 somewhere in particular iran did not want to be hit and they said we want to talk we want to talk
00:07:39.820 about the straight but more importantly from my standpoint we want to talk about the denuclearization
00:07:46.400 of iran because it's what it's all about this is why i'm doing this and it should have been done
00:07:51.520 now 50 years we keep saying 47 years but three years have gone by but it's for 50 years that
00:07:58.720 other presidents should have been doing what i or other countries didn't have to be us but other 1.00
00:08:03.600 countries and nobody did it and it was time and we hit him hard with the b2s more than a year ago now 1.00
00:08:10.720 and that knocked out their capability for their potential capability and we've done a great job 1.00
00:08:17.680 but when we talk we say we're talking if we're not talking when you ask me no we're not talking
00:08:22.320 i'll say it but we are talking right now we're talking and we're talking at the request of iran
00:08:28.560 backed by saudi arabia backed by uae and backed by qatar in particular but others also many many
00:08:36.560 countries called many the leaders are made up friendly with a lot of them almost all of them
00:08:41.680 one way or the other and they all wanted to give this a last chance this is the last chance
00:08:47.680 This is not something that if it doesn't happen, this is a last chance for them to sign a good document.
00:08:56.760 Now, the president added the talks are going to go quickly one way or the other.
00:09:01.660 The president outlined a two stage framework for the negotiation, saying the immediate priorities is reopening the Strait of Hormuz before broader talks on Iran's nuclear program.
00:09:12.380 The president saying we're talking about the opening of the strait, having it open literally by tomorrow, completely open.
00:09:18.720 That's phase one. And then phase two is we will talk about the nuclear, the denuclearization of Iran. 0.62
00:09:27.240 President Trump also rejected any suggestion that Iran would be permitted to impose those tariff fees on commercial shipping through the strategic waterway as well.
00:09:37.660 He said, I'm not letting them charge, as you just heard.
00:09:40.400 Now, earlier in the day, Trump sharply criticized Iran's leadership after the Iranian officials publicly yet again lied and denied that direct negotiations with Washington were taking place.
00:09:52.660 The president said on True Social, Iranian leadership is unbelievably duplicitous.
00:09:58.520 They asked for a meeting. Some would say beg. Talks begin with more scheduled in the immediate future.
00:10:04.320 And they say openly and proudly they're not having any discussion, that nothing is being talked about, and they're only dealing with Oman.
00:10:14.260 Trump argued that Iran was not only misrepresenting the negotiations, but also overstating its control over the Strait of Hormuz.
00:10:21.420 Quote, they then go on to give their usual blather in saying the Strait of Hormuz will be operated powerfully by them when it is already completely controlled by the United States Navy.
00:10:31.060 He continued writing, nothing gets through to Iran unless we want it to.
00:10:36.400 And nothing will get through unless a deal or total surrender is accomplished. 0.73
00:10:41.540 Whether Iran wants to admit it or not, we are, in fact, talking of a solution to a problem that they have caused for decades. 0.77
00:10:49.420 It's very simple. Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.
00:10:54.720 Now, of course, Iran continues publicly to reject Trump's characterizations of the diplomacy.
00:11:00.480 The Iranian foreign minister spokesman said Monday that Tehran is not engaged in direct negotiations with the United States
00:11:07.400 and that its current discussions are with Oman over arrangements for shipping through the quote-unquote Strait of Hormuz.
00:11:14.680 We are not negotiating with the United States at this time, he said during his weekly press briefing,
00:11:19.760 adding that issues involving Washington should be examined in the next stages.
00:11:23.900 They went on to also say that the talks with Amman are focused on establishing a mutually acceptable shipping corridor through the strategic waterway rather than restoring navigation to its pre-war status, while maintaining that Iran would continue defending what it describes as its sovereign rights in the strait.
00:11:43.480 Now, President Trump's remarks also came after he announced over the weekend that he canceled planned strikes on Iran after saying regional allies, and you heard him talk about this, were begging for diplomacy to have one more chance.
00:11:59.340 Now, speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump also said the proposed operations, these military operations, would have been, quote, the biggest since World War II, before he agreed to delay it after the allies urged him yet again to sit down.
00:12:12.600 And President Trump yet again reiterating another point, saying he is under no time constraints.
00:12:20.440 To conclude the negotiations, he emphasized Iran cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. 1.00
00:12:25.860 And he said, this is why I'm doing this. Iran cannot have any nuclear weapons.
00:12:31.800 So there's your update. This is where we are. Things are changing quickly.
00:12:36.620 Many may hear this and say, weren't we just here weeks ago? Absolutely we were.
00:12:41.460 But the threat of major military action is at its highest point so far.
00:12:46.360 And now we'll have to wait and watch and see what happens moving forward.
