00:00:00.000 This is an iHeart Podcast.
00:00:02.500 Guaranteed human.
00:00:05.340 Welcome. It is Verdict with Senator Ted Cruz, Ben Ferguson with you.
00:00:09.360 And this show that we are going to do tonight is one that I hope you will really pay attention to
00:00:16.100 and help us explain to the rest of the world what is about to happen.
00:00:21.780 And it deals with 9-11 in a shock that came out.
00:00:26.360 And it was just a Pentagon email or a letter that went to the families from 9-11 who lost loved ones during that attack.
00:00:35.920 And the suspected mastermind of 9-11 attacks, as well as four other defendants,
00:00:41.200 apparently they could all escape the death penalty under a, quote, new plea deal where they would plead guilty
00:00:47.900 and then it would save their lives literally.
00:00:51.640 Now, there are a lot of people that have direct connection to 9-11 that are beyond furious over this.
00:00:57.880 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is the mastermind behind 9-11.
00:01:01.900 He was the CEO of this 9-11 attack.
00:01:04.840 He was the one that came up with it with Osama bin Laden.
00:01:08.560 He had in his writings before we caught him and had said publicly that his goal was to kill as many Americans as possible.
00:01:14.660 And he wanted to have mass mass casualties, not just on 9-11, but after 9-11.
00:01:20.820 He also was planning other attacks as well.
00:01:23.880 That suspected mastermind now would be, in essence, given a deal.
00:01:26.860 Now, Senator, I think the pullback, the curtain here, you and I talked about this,
00:01:31.700 is the fact that this seems to be the department, the Pentagon and the Biden administration saying,
00:01:37.920 no one wants these people, they're too dangerous, these five men, including the mastermind of 9-11.
00:01:44.760 So we want to close down Gitmo, and the way we could close it down is giving these five defendants a plea deal
00:01:52.720 so we can wrap up Guantanamo Bay and say, look, we closed this thing down, aren't we great people?
00:02:00.320 That is the most, I think, disgusting part of this deal is it's just for a political purpose for them.
00:02:06.460 This story is absolutely outrageous, and I think everyone hearing it should be shocked and should be furious.
00:02:16.080 On September 11th, deranged radical Islamic terrorists carried out the worst terrorist attack
00:02:25.320 in the history of the United States of America.
00:02:28.160 They murdered 2,977 innocent people.
00:02:34.220 It was horrific.
00:02:36.860 It was an act of war.
00:02:38.840 It was an act of war that was planned and executed to attempt to cripple the United States.
00:02:51.000 Every one of us who was alive and an adult at the time remembers where they were on September 11th,
00:03:00.220 remembers where they were when they saw the image of the first plane hitting the first tower
00:03:05.240 in New York City, and then the second plane hitting the second tower in New York City.
00:03:11.900 You remember where you were when the plane flew into the Pentagon,
00:03:15.860 and you remember where they were when the brave heroes took the plane down
00:03:21.940 over that hallowed field in Pennsylvania.
00:03:27.280 Yesterday, the Biden administration sent letters to the families of the victims
00:03:35.000 of the nearly 3,000 people murdered that day,
00:03:38.800 saying, by the way, the guy who planned it,
00:03:41.940 the guy who was the mastermind behind it,
00:03:43.920 the guy who plotted it,
00:03:45.700 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed,
00:03:46.680 and four others who were active participants in the worst act of terrorism in U.S. history,
00:03:53.680 we may not seek the death penalty for them.
00:03:56.560 If you don't seek the death penalty
00:03:58.740 for murdering nearly 3,000 people in an act of war,
00:04:03.640 then what the hell do you seek the death penalty for?
00:04:07.500 It is outrageous,
00:04:09.480 and it's infuriating.
00:04:11.020 You look at these charges,
00:04:13.880 and I go to just to remind people of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed,
00:04:18.220 this is an individual that worked hand-in-hand with Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda.
00:04:23.120 He was the leader of al-Qaeda's propaganda operations,
00:04:27.020 and that was really recruitment.
00:04:28.920 He needed to recruit soldiers for jihad.
00:04:31.900 He was in charge and was incredibly successful
00:04:35.460 at the propaganda that brought people in,
00:04:38.740 especially in the Middle East from different countries,
00:04:41.020 into al-Qaeda.
00:04:42.680 He did that so well from 1999 to 2001
00:04:45.920 that some described him as the number one recruiter of terrorists in the world.
00:04:52.240 When we captured him,
00:04:54.680 just so people remember,
00:04:56.060 in 2003,
00:04:57.520 there were several countries that wanted him
00:05:00.160 because they wanted to kill him.
00:05:02.120 And what we did is we wanted intel out of him
00:05:04.680 because he knew about the entire operations
00:05:06.680 and he could lead us to Osama bin Laden.
00:05:08.640 When we interrogated him in March 2007,
00:05:11.800 he finally confessed to what we already knew.
00:05:16.280 He was the mastermind of the 9-11 attacks.
00:05:18.960 The Richard Reed shoe bombing attempt to blow up an airliner,
00:05:22.360 he was also the mastermind of that.
00:05:24.240 The Bali nightclub bombing in Indonesia,
00:05:27.280 he was involved in that.
00:05:28.480 The 1993 World Trade Center bombings,
00:05:31.840 the murder of Daniel Pearl,
00:05:34.620 the Wall Street Journal reporter,
00:05:36.320 and various other foiled attacks,
00:05:39.020 as well as numerous other crimes,
00:05:41.480 he was involved with.
00:05:42.800 It wasn't just 9-11.
00:05:45.880 And that's why,
00:05:47.580 clearly,
00:05:48.000 he deserves a death penalty.
00:05:49.960 What he was charged with was first-degree murder,
00:05:52.540 2,977 counts,
00:05:55.500 for everyone that died on 9-11,
00:05:57.680 attacking civilians,
00:05:59.480 he was charged without attacking civilian objects,
00:06:02.340 intentionally causing serious bodily injury,
00:06:05.960 murder in the violation of the law of war,
00:06:08.820 destruction of property in violation of the law of war,
00:06:11.200 hijacking or hazarding a vessel or aircraft.
00:06:15.180 Then he was charged with multiple counts of terrorism.
00:06:17.920 And then all of the other things I just listed,
00:06:20.200 why would anyone at the Pentagon,
00:06:23.560 unless it's political pressure from this White House,
00:06:26.180 because the White House,
00:06:26.900 to be clear,
00:06:27.680 Senator,
00:06:27.960 could stop this,
00:06:28.780 right?
00:06:28.980 They could step in here and say,
00:06:30.260 no,
00:06:30.660 you're not going to do this,
00:06:31.960 right?
00:06:32.160 You're not going to let this guy live
00:06:33.640 and let him plead guilty.
00:06:35.540 So I think it's two things.
00:06:37.500 One,
00:06:38.020 I think,
00:06:38.660 when it comes to criminal law,
00:06:41.700 this administration is populated by left-wing ideologues.
00:06:46.380 And in the entire time Joe Biden has been president,
00:06:53.180 the Department of Justice has not authorized
00:06:55.760 a single new death penalty prosecution
00:06:58.820 under Merrick Garland.
00:07:01.060 They've halted death penalty prosecutions.
00:07:04.160 And in fact,
00:07:06.100 Joe Biden campaigned on ending the federal death penalty.
00:07:10.580 His criminal justice platform included a pledge
00:07:12.900 laid out on his campaign website that said,
00:07:15.660 quote,
00:07:16.400 to work to pass legislation to eliminate the death penalty
00:07:19.160 at the federal level
00:07:19.960 and incentivize states to follow the federal government's example.
00:07:24.120 And he said,
00:07:24.600 those convicted of the most egregious federal crimes,
00:07:27.000 quote,
00:07:27.760 should serve instead,
00:07:29.140 should instead serve life sentences
00:07:30.780 without probation or,
00:07:32.700 or,
00:07:33.300 or parole.
00:07:34.860 And,
00:07:35.320 and since Merrick Garland took office,
00:07:37.400 he has not sought the death penalty.
00:07:40.720 And,
00:07:40.880 and by the way,
00:07:41.900 that includes the deranged murderer in El Paso
00:07:46.780 that went into the Walmart seeking to murder Hispanics
00:07:50.140 on a blatant racist hate crime.
00:07:54.460 And the Biden Department of Justice did not seek the death penalty there.
00:07:58.760 Instead,
00:07:59.200 he was sentenced to 90 life sentences.
00:08:01.380 He might be executed by the state of Texas.
00:08:03.560 And in fact,
00:08:04.220 I have every confidence that the state of Texas
00:08:06.360 is going to prosecute that monster
00:08:08.900 and carry out capital punishment on him.
00:08:12.720 But the feds,
00:08:13.840 the feds,
00:08:14.620 you commit a horrible racist hate crime
00:08:17.140 and mass murder.
00:08:18.920 The Biden DOJ,
00:08:20.500 they won't consider the death penalty.
00:08:23.200 And,
00:08:23.380 and when you're talking about terrorism,
00:08:26.300 it is,
00:08:26.880 it is,
00:08:27.380 this is the worst act of terrorism in U.S. history.
00:08:33.280 And yet,
00:08:34.480 these left-wing ideologues,
00:08:37.260 they don't want to hold the mastermind of murdering nearly 3,000 Americans
00:08:42.320 accountable.
00:08:44.260 It is,
00:08:45.160 it is so profoundly disrespectful,
00:08:48.280 not just to the families of the victims,
00:08:50.160 not just to the Americans who were murdered that day,
00:08:52.200 but,
00:08:52.780 but to everyone in this country.
00:08:54.580 This was an act of war against America.
00:08:58.220 And,
00:08:58.340 and these bastards don't give a damn.
00:09:02.200 The other part that I think is so shocking about this,
00:09:04.580 Senator,
00:09:04.840 is the fact that you have a man like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
00:09:08.420 He,
00:09:08.780 we know for a fact,
00:09:09.700 he traveled the Philippines back in 1994.
00:09:12.540 We were trying to,
00:09:13.400 by the way,
00:09:13.680 get him after this.
00:09:14.760 The United States government was,
00:09:16.320 he worked with his nephew,
00:09:17.700 another terrorist that you'll know his name,
00:09:19.960 Ramzi Yusuf,
00:09:21.580 on a massive plot to destroy 12 commercial airliners,
00:09:26.180 flying routes between the United States of America,
00:09:28.620 East Asia,
00:09:29.280 and Southeast Asia.
00:09:30.960 The 9-11 Commission report says,
00:09:32.940 this marked the first time that KSM,
00:09:35.060 that's what he's known as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed,
00:09:36.940 took part in the actual planning of a terrorist operation.
00:09:39.520 This was back in 1994.
00:09:42.720 The United States 9-11 Commission also said,
00:09:47.160 by his own accounts,
00:09:48.760 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed,
00:09:50.180 his animus towards the United States,
00:09:52.200 stemmed not from his experiences,
00:09:53.540 because he was smart,
00:09:54.460 he came to the U.S. as a student,
00:09:55.980 but rather,
00:09:57.300 they said,
00:09:57.800 his violent disagreement with U.S. foreign policy,
00:10:01.700 favoring Israel.
00:10:03.800 So this is a man that wanted Israel to burn,
00:10:07.420 this is a man that started being a terrorist in 1994,
00:10:10.280 and this is a man who America had been trying to track down,
00:10:15.360 at least by 95 and 96.
00:10:18.600 In fact,
00:10:19.000 Mohammed returned to Afghanistan,
00:10:20.320 to avoid capture by U.S. authorities in his flight from Qatar,
00:10:26.380 because he was told or tipped off that America was coming to get him.
00:10:29.880 That was in the 1990s.
00:10:32.440 So he wanted Israel to burn.
00:10:35.380 He succeeded in causing America to burn in New York City and Washington, D.C.
00:10:42.940 and Pennsylvania,
00:10:44.180 murdering nearly 3,000 Americans.
00:10:46.740 And I mentioned it was a couple of things.
00:10:48.280 One, it is the radical ideologues in the Biden administration
00:10:52.100 who won't seek the death penalty for anybody.
00:10:55.380 But two,
00:10:57.240 this Biden White House and this president
00:10:59.460 consistently,
00:11:01.660 systematically puts partisan political objectives
00:11:05.700 above justice and above protecting U.S. national security.
00:11:10.840 It is ironic that we find this news out
00:11:14.060 within a week of the two-year anniversary
00:11:17.560 of Joe Biden surrendering the Taliban,
00:11:21.840 abandoning Afghanistan,
00:11:23.880 abandoning Kabul,
00:11:25.100 leaving Americans behind to die,
00:11:28.080 abandoning 13 servicemen and women
00:11:31.280 who were murdered in Kabul.
00:11:33.440 And we discussed on this podcast,
00:11:36.460 we played the testimony of a heroic Marine
00:11:39.240 who explained that they had the intelligence
00:11:41.740 about the bomber,
00:11:42.940 and the higher-ups would not allow them to take him out
00:11:46.320 before he murdered 13 servicemen and women.
00:11:49.260 Why?
00:11:49.800 Because this White House values politics
00:11:52.700 above national security.
00:11:55.080 Now, why did they have such a disastrous
00:11:57.240 withdrawal from Afghanistan?
00:11:58.920 Because the president
00:12:00.000 wanted to have an announcement
00:12:02.040 on 9-11,
00:12:03.440 on the anniversary of 9-11,
00:12:05.140 we are out of Afghanistan.
00:12:06.660 That was a political objective.
00:12:08.320 And the fact that it would cause people to die,
00:12:11.300 the fact that it would abandon people
00:12:13.020 who had risked their lives to save us,
00:12:15.480 the fact that it would empower terrorists
00:12:17.840 who want to murder us,
00:12:19.080 none of that mattered.
00:12:20.560 The fact that it would result
00:12:21.960 in chaos and catastrophe,
00:12:23.960 and remember those images
00:12:24.920 of the people grasping the wheels of planes
00:12:27.900 as they were taking off,
00:12:29.280 as Biden cut and run.
00:12:32.920 For them, politics was more important.
00:12:34.840 You alluded when you opened this podcast
00:12:37.340 to a major reason why they're doing this,
00:12:40.840 which is Joe Biden wants to announce
00:12:42.760 we have closed Guantanamo.
00:12:45.720 Why?
00:12:46.340 Because that's a partisan political objective.
00:12:48.380 They want to dance around
00:12:51.480 and trumpet that fact
00:12:52.580 with a left-wing activist
00:12:53.620 who never liked that Gitmo was there
00:12:55.040 in the first place.
00:12:55.940 They never liked that we were fighting
00:12:57.220 against the terrorists,
00:12:58.080 and they want to say we closed Gitmo.
00:13:00.260 Now, the problem is
00:13:01.260 you have terrorists there,
00:13:03.260 and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
00:13:04.800 There are four others in this group,
00:13:06.640 but KSM is by far the worst of them.
00:13:10.960 He's the principal person
00:13:12.600 other than Osama bin Laden,
00:13:15.200 who was behind the September 11th attack.
00:13:18.560 They can't close Guantanamo
00:13:20.500 because they can't move them
00:13:21.820 to the United States
00:13:22.640 and put them in a U.S. prison
00:13:24.160 unless they reach some outcome.
00:13:27.480 That's why they want a plea deal,
00:13:29.020 so they could get their political victory
00:13:30.900 of closing Gitmo
00:13:32.940 and do so at the expense
00:13:35.760 of U.S. national security.
00:13:37.780 And let's be clear,
00:13:39.320 if they cut a plea deal
00:13:40.680 with this terrorist,
00:13:42.640 that will only encourage
00:13:43.980 subsequent terrorists.
00:13:45.540 Mind you, this is right on the wake
00:13:47.100 of Joe Biden sending
00:13:48.760 $6 billion to Iran.
00:13:52.060 The Ayatollah in Iran
00:13:53.300 is the leading state sponsor
00:13:54.940 of terrorism on Earth,
00:13:57.840 paying enormous sums of money
00:13:59.600 to murder Israelis
00:14:00.600 and to murder Americans.
00:14:02.420 To be clear, Iran,
00:14:03.460 to remind people,
00:14:04.340 Iran killed more American soldiers,
00:14:07.040 dismembered more American soldiers
00:14:08.560 without firing a shot
00:14:10.060 because they were the ones
00:14:11.200 supplying the roadside bombs
00:14:12.920 and the advanced bombs
00:14:14.540 to the terrorists,
00:14:16.160 whether they were the insurgents
00:14:17.640 or ISIS, Al-Qaeda, etc.,
00:14:20.040 and they were funneling them
00:14:22.080 and giving them safe haven,
00:14:23.760 and we just sent them billions of dollars
00:14:26.180 to then fund more terrorism.
00:14:27.640 $6 billion for five hostages,
00:14:31.020 American hostages released.
00:14:32.720 So now they've set the price
00:14:34.780 of an American hostage
00:14:35.800 at over a billion dollars apiece.
00:14:38.200 The result of that,
00:14:40.280 they've increased the risk
00:14:42.460 that more Americans
00:14:43.420 are going to be taken hostage.
00:14:44.800 They've told every tyrant,
00:14:47.280 every bad guy,
00:14:48.380 every rogue regime,
00:14:49.660 you go grab an American
00:14:50.940 and the idiots
00:14:52.420 in the Biden administration
00:14:53.640 will cut you a billion dollar check.
00:14:55.160 And it is a consistent pattern.
00:14:59.800 Elevate partisan politics
00:15:01.640 above our national security interest,
00:15:04.720 even if it endangers
00:15:06.320 the lives of Americans.

00:15:10.720 More out of themselves,
00:15:11.800 their businesses,

00:15:13.700 and the world around them.
00:15:14.900 And that's why we're thrilled
00:15:15.880 to introduce
00:15:16.520 the Honest Talk podcast.

00:15:26.780 politicians,
00:15:27.440 and newsmakers,
00:15:28.360 all at different stages
00:15:29.420 of their journey.
00:15:30.560 So if you're looking to connect,
00:15:32.360 then we hope you'll join us.
00:15:33.800 Listen to the Honest Talk podcast
00:15:35.160 on iHeartRadio
00:15:36.160 or wherever you listen
00:15:37.140 to your podcasts.
00:15:39.440 I want to tell you
00:15:40.260 about our friends
00:15:40.720 at Patriot Mobile.
00:15:41.560 If you are a person like me
00:15:44.520 where you have said,
00:15:45.680 I've had enough
00:15:46.500 of giving my money
00:15:47.400 to companies
00:15:47.840 that are going against my values
00:15:49.940 and attacking my family values
00:15:52.360 and my Christian values,
00:15:53.480 my principles,
00:15:54.760 then I want you
00:15:56.000 to make a switch.
00:15:57.620 If you've got a cell phone
00:15:58.860 and your cell phone
00:15:59.520 with a big mobile,
00:16:00.480 you may not realize
00:16:01.340 just where your money's going.
00:16:02.520 Did you know
00:16:02.860 a lot of big mobile companies
00:16:03.860 get big donations
00:16:04.780 to Planned Parenthood?
00:16:06.180 Did you know
00:16:06.680 they give big donations
00:16:07.880 to hardcore leftist organizations
00:16:09.880 and candidates?
00:16:11.400 Well, that's why
00:16:12.120 I want you to switch
00:16:13.080 to Patriot Mobile.
00:16:14.260 Now, for years,
00:16:15.260 big mobile companies
00:16:16.100 have been dumping millions
00:16:18.080 into these causes.
00:16:18.920 And we had to take it
00:16:20.320 because there wasn't
00:16:21.080 another option.
00:16:22.000 Now there is.

00:16:39.600 to Patriot Mobile,

00:16:48.400 are first responders,
00:16:49.800 are heroes,
00:16:50.680 but you also are
00:16:51.880 supporting a company
00:16:52.760 that supports
00:16:53.760 American workers.

00:17:20.080 Senator,
00:17:20.320 I want to go back
00:17:20.900 to one other thing
00:17:21.420 about Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
00:17:22.420 just so people understand
00:17:24.240 what the,
00:17:25.700 many Americans,
00:17:26.600 I think we forget,
00:17:27.460 or you may not even know this.
00:17:29.460 If you want to know
00:17:30.240 how sadistic
00:17:31.080 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was,
00:17:32.540 and this was an individual
00:17:34.240 after 9-11,
00:17:35.700 and my mentor
00:17:36.300 was John Ashcroft,
00:17:37.160 the Attorney General
00:17:37.860 after 9-11.
00:17:38.780 I was in D.C.
00:17:39.660 working in the Bush administration,
00:17:40.800 and I learned
00:17:41.900 a ton of information
00:17:43.160 about these people
00:17:44.660 that planned 9-11.
00:17:45.800 I remember watching it,
00:17:46.960 I was in college at the time,
00:17:48.760 and I also have become friends
00:17:50.420 with one of the guys
00:17:51.200 that actually pulled
00:17:52.180 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
00:17:53.240 in the capture.
00:17:54.800 And having those two perspectives,
00:17:56.960 the amount of reading
00:17:57.900 I put into him,
00:17:59.140 is probably more than
00:18:01.020 any other subject in the world,
00:18:02.740 and how they planned 9-11,
00:18:04.400 because I wanted to understand
00:18:05.860 our enemy,
00:18:06.820 and why they hated us so much.
00:18:08.240 And Khalid Sheikh Mohammed,
00:18:10.420 not only did he help plan
00:18:12.220 other airliner attacks,
00:18:14.520 but he actually worked
00:18:16.260 to devise a scheme
00:18:17.240 where five men
00:18:18.260 in a single day,
00:18:19.620 and this was back in the 90s,
00:18:21.260 would board 12 flights.
00:18:23.520 Two each to three of the men
00:18:25.800 on each plane.
00:18:27.160 They would then put bombs
00:18:28.840 on those planes,
00:18:29.800 and their plan was
00:18:30.720 to exit the planes,
00:18:31.980 leaving timers
00:18:32.900 to ignite those bombs.
00:18:34.380 They did a dry run on this
00:18:35.820 on Philippine Airlines,
00:18:36.880 434,
00:18:38.680 and they used an explosive,
00:18:40.840 and it went off.
00:18:42.080 Then they were planning
00:18:43.000 on doing this,
00:18:43.640 but then they realized
00:18:44.580 something with Osama bin Laden.
00:18:46.480 This sadistic individual
00:18:47.800 said,
00:18:48.800 no, no, no,
00:18:49.080 that's not enough.
00:18:50.540 We need to hijack
00:18:51.840 the planes with jihadists
00:18:53.540 who are willing
00:18:54.640 to blow themselves up,
00:18:56.120 right,
00:18:56.380 in the explosion,
00:18:58.000 and not just kill
00:18:58.980 everybody on the plane,
00:19:00.060 but hit targets
00:19:01.460 to make America
00:19:03.280 be fearful of us
00:19:04.640 and change the course
00:19:05.640 of the world.
00:19:06.220 That's why they picked
00:19:07.720 the Twin Towers.
00:19:08.940 That's why they picked
00:19:09.700 the Pentagon.
00:19:10.780 That's why that other plane
00:19:11.840 that crashed in that field
00:19:13.340 apparently was headed
00:19:14.200 towards the White House.
00:19:15.460 That was its intended target
00:19:17.000 from what we understand.
00:19:18.480 They understood
00:19:19.340 that these planes
00:19:20.460 with the right men,
00:19:22.120 and they found those men,
00:19:23.460 and they trained those men,
00:19:24.880 and they took care
00:19:25.800 of their families afterwards.
00:19:27.320 All of this was
00:19:28.300 from Mohammed said,
00:19:29.080 no, no,
00:19:29.260 it's not enough
00:19:29.800 just to blow a plane up.
00:19:31.000 We have to hit
00:19:31.860 American targets
00:19:33.140 that the American people
00:19:34.820 will come to their knees
00:19:36.400 when it happens,
00:19:37.780 and we can change
00:19:38.720 the course
00:19:39.280 of the future
00:19:40.520 of the world.
00:19:42.260 That is the guy
00:19:43.300 that now,
00:19:44.340 and imagine if you had
00:19:45.240 a family member
00:19:45.820 on any one of these planes,
00:19:47.180 or that was killed
00:19:48.440 in the Twin Towers,
00:19:49.580 or at the Pentagon,
00:19:50.620 et cetera,
00:19:51.640 and all these other
00:19:52.480 terror attacks
00:19:52.900 I mentioned earlier
00:19:53.680 that he was involved in,
00:19:55.820 you get a letter
00:19:56.580 in the mail
00:19:57.000 that says,
00:19:57.640 we just want
00:19:58.680 to wrap this up.
00:20:00.220 How does anybody
00:20:01.040 have faith
00:20:01.520 in America's government
00:20:02.420 if we do this?
00:20:05.120 Look, Ben,
00:20:05.880 it is shocking.
00:20:07.560 Now, I want to do something.
00:20:09.500 A lot of the folks
00:20:10.460 that listen to Verdict
00:20:11.500 are young.
00:20:14.120 We have a lot
00:20:15.020 of college kids
00:20:15.820 who listen.
00:20:16.420 We have a lot
00:20:16.820 of high school kids
00:20:17.580 who listen.
00:20:18.660 We have a lot
00:20:19.400 of young professionals
00:20:20.180 who listen.
00:20:20.800 We have a lot
00:20:21.160 of people
00:20:21.560 who are regular listeners
00:20:22.580 to Verdict
00:20:23.140 who were not alive
00:20:24.740 on September 11th,
00:20:25.820 and so for them,
00:20:29.420 September 11th
00:20:30.560 is sort of like
00:20:31.920 what Pearl Harbor
00:20:32.720 is to you and me.
00:20:33.780 It is a thing
00:20:36.080 about we know
00:20:36.700 about in history.
00:20:37.680 We know that it was
00:20:38.280 a horrific attack
00:20:39.360 on America,
00:20:40.120 but it's not something
00:20:41.420 for many of our listeners
00:20:43.140 that is part of
00:20:44.040 their lived experience.
00:20:46.460 And for both you
00:20:47.680 and I,
00:20:49.740 September 11th
00:20:50.760 is indelibly
00:20:51.700 marked in our minds.
00:20:52.940 I was in Washington,
00:20:54.200 D.C.,
00:20:55.280 on September 11th.
00:20:57.040 I remember it acutely.
00:20:59.600 Where were you?
00:21:00.480 Tell me where you were
00:21:02.260 and how you experienced
00:21:03.700 September 11th.
00:21:04.680 I was in my dorm room
00:21:05.820 at Ole Miss,
00:21:06.580 and I was sitting there
00:21:08.200 studying for a big test,
00:21:10.280 and I was about to leave,
00:21:11.780 and my phone rang.
00:21:12.740 This was like,
00:21:13.620 almost like,
00:21:14.280 cell phones weren't
00:21:14.980 really big yet.
00:21:15.920 I remember my dorm room
00:21:17.360 phone ringing,
00:21:18.700 and it was a producer
00:21:19.840 that I had worked with
00:21:22.100 at Fox News
00:21:23.060 because I was
00:21:23.540 commenting at the time.
00:21:24.460 He said,
00:21:24.760 turn your TV right now
00:21:25.540 and hung up on me.
00:21:27.040 And I remember
00:21:27.700 turning the TV on Fox.
00:21:28.780 It wasn't even on yet,
00:21:29.580 and then I went to NBC,
00:21:30.720 and I remember watching
00:21:32.460 as they thought
00:21:33.660 that it was a small plane
00:21:34.960 that may have hit
00:21:35.640 the building,
00:21:36.180 and then I watched
00:21:38.120 in real time,
00:21:39.500 live,
00:21:40.040 that second plane
00:21:40.900 hit the second tower.
00:21:41.940 And I remember
00:21:43.600 that whole day,
00:21:44.520 the entire campus,
00:21:45.680 it was like
00:21:46.180 this zombie apocalypse.
00:21:47.820 No one knew what to do.
00:21:49.940 No one,
00:21:50.860 everybody was calling
00:21:51.740 their mom and dad.
00:21:52.920 Everybody was,
00:21:54.620 parents,
00:21:55.120 I remember,
00:21:55.660 showing up an hour later
00:21:56.720 taking kids away
00:21:58.120 from the campus
00:21:58.720 because they were so afraid
00:21:59.620 that this could happen
00:22:00.380 on college campuses.
00:22:02.060 There were rumors
00:22:02.720 going around,
00:22:03.800 and you were,
00:22:04.500 I called my dad,
00:22:05.740 who was in law enforcement.
00:22:06.680 I was like,
00:22:06.960 what do I do?
00:22:07.520 And he was like,
00:22:07.980 hey,
00:22:08.120 I want you to get out
00:22:08.780 of your dorm.
00:22:09.420 I remember him
00:22:09.920 telling me that.
00:22:10.500 I want you to get
00:22:10.940 out of your dorm room.
00:22:12.280 Go get in your car,
00:22:13.240 get out of the dorm room,
00:22:14.140 and then we decided
00:22:15.160 that I was going
00:22:15.880 to come to Memphis.
00:22:16.900 And everyone left
00:22:18.500 because no one knew
00:22:19.620 what was going
00:22:20.060 to happen next.
00:22:20.900 And then when I remember,
00:22:22.180 you hear that a bomb
00:22:24.060 had gone off.
00:22:24.800 There was a report,
00:22:26.160 a bomb went off
00:22:26.660 by the White House.
00:22:27.420 And then I remember
00:22:28.660 watching those journalists
00:22:30.120 live feeds
00:22:31.020 where they were running
00:22:31.820 down the street
00:22:32.620 and they called it
00:22:33.820 the trail of the heels
00:22:35.720 because everybody
00:22:36.420 was kicking their shoes off
00:22:37.600 running for their lives.
00:22:38.920 And then the Pentagon
00:22:40.000 got hit.
00:22:40.560 And then we heard
00:22:40.900 there was multiple
00:22:41.700 other planes.
00:22:42.760 It was the scariest
00:22:43.720 day of my life
00:22:44.880 from a,
00:22:46.400 you felt like nowhere
00:22:47.660 was safe in that moment.
00:22:49.060 And that's exactly
00:22:50.040 what these hijackers
00:22:51.320 had planned.
00:22:52.620 It was their entire,
00:22:54.340 the decision making
00:22:55.600 and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
00:22:56.900 who could get a deal.
00:22:58.500 He's the guy
00:22:59.200 that picked the target.
00:23:00.060 A lot of people thought
00:23:00.640 it was Hassan Bin Laden.
00:23:01.680 It was not.
00:23:02.780 Bin Laden had rejected
00:23:03.860 some targets
00:23:04.620 that were suggested
00:23:05.360 by Mohammed.
00:23:06.500 For example,
00:23:07.360 the U.S. Bank Tower
00:23:08.940 in Los Angeles.
00:23:10.580 It was one of the targets.
00:23:11.920 He said,
00:23:12.140 no, no, no.
00:23:12.520 I want to simplify it.
00:23:13.880 That's too hard
00:23:14.400 to fly there quickly
00:23:15.640 and you can't get there
00:23:17.140 from takeoff.
00:23:17.820 So he said no to that one.
00:23:19.080 But it was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
00:23:20.620 that came up
00:23:21.500 with that list.
00:23:23.160 And it was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed
00:23:25.080 that is,
00:23:26.300 that went out there
00:23:27.100 and picked
00:23:27.440 every single
00:23:28.300 9-11 hijacker.
00:23:29.480 Osama Bin Laden
00:23:31.160 didn't do
00:23:31.760 any of that work.
00:23:33.260 That was Mohammed
00:23:34.380 who went out there
00:23:35.300 and proceeded
00:23:35.900 to organize the plot,
00:23:37.340 met with the people,
00:23:38.760 got them the training,
00:23:40.100 taught them how
00:23:40.740 to fly the planes,
00:23:41.700 got them the flight
00:23:42.460 training in America.
00:23:43.940 And Bin Laden,
00:23:45.140 yes,
00:23:45.700 he provided
00:23:46.240 the financial support,
00:23:47.660 but this is the guy
00:23:48.700 who's still alive
00:23:49.420 and the people
00:23:50.200 that risked their lives
00:23:51.080 to get him.
00:23:51.440 There were several times
00:23:52.240 that Americans died,
00:23:53.200 by the way,
00:23:53.920 on bad intel
00:23:55.120 trying to get
00:23:55.880 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
00:23:56.760 And there are people
00:23:58.480 that gave the ultimate sacrifice
00:23:59.860 just trying to capture him alive
00:24:02.060 because we didn't want
00:24:02.780 to blow him up.
00:24:03.380 We had chances,
00:24:04.100 from what I understand,
00:24:05.200 to blow him up.
00:24:06.240 And we weren't able
00:24:07.280 to do that.
00:24:08.160 We didn't want to do it.
00:24:09.020 We were told,
00:24:09.480 no, no, no,
00:24:09.700 we want to capture him
00:24:10.580 because we thought
00:24:11.460 he had more intel
00:24:12.580 or as much intel
00:24:13.900 as Osama Bin Laden
00:24:14.980 and that's why
00:24:15.620 we took him alive
00:24:16.460 instead of trying
00:24:16.980 to kill him.
00:24:19.220 So,
00:24:19.800 I remember that morning.
00:24:21.860 It was,
00:24:22.840 obviously,
00:24:23.660 September 11th
00:24:24.620 of 2001
00:24:25.840 and it was the beginning
00:24:27.180 of the Bush administration
00:24:28.180 and Heidi and I
00:24:30.680 were newlyweds.
00:24:31.960 We had gotten married
00:24:32.780 in May of 2001
00:24:34.100 and we were both working
00:24:36.040 in the Bush administration.
00:24:37.140 The two of us
00:24:37.620 had met on the
00:24:38.440 George W. Bush
00:24:39.160 presidential campaign
00:24:40.400 the year before.
00:24:42.520 Heidi was working
00:24:43.360 in the White House.
00:24:44.040 She was in the U.S.
00:24:44.840 Trade Representative's office
00:24:45.880 which is part
00:24:46.960 of the White House complex.
00:24:48.740 I was working
00:24:49.580 at the Federal Trade Commission.
00:24:52.040 The first plane
00:24:53.420 hit the first
00:24:56.000 World Trade Center tower
00:24:57.860 at 8.46 a.m.
00:25:00.880 And within a minute or two
00:25:02.340 Heidi was already
00:25:03.000 at the office.
00:25:04.160 She called me at home
00:25:05.200 and I was walking
00:25:06.440 out the front door.
00:25:07.400 Our apartment
00:25:07.980 was in northern Virginia.
00:25:10.460 It was less than a mile
00:25:11.360 from the Pentagon.
00:25:12.520 It was just south
00:25:13.300 of the Pentagon.
00:25:14.780 And Heidi called me
00:25:15.740 as I was walking
00:25:16.340 out the front door
00:25:17.040 and she said,
00:25:17.860 stop where you are,
00:25:18.860 turn on the TV
00:25:19.580 and watch what happened.
00:25:21.460 So I stopped.
00:25:22.440 I didn't leave the apartment
00:25:23.360 and I turned on the TV
00:25:24.400 and I saw a plane
00:25:26.800 had hit one of the Twin Towers.
00:25:29.800 Now when the first plane hit
00:25:31.740 nobody knew what it was
00:25:33.620 and initially
00:25:34.740 you couldn't tell
00:25:36.940 that it was an airliner.
00:25:38.960 There was a lot
00:25:39.740 of speculation
00:25:40.360 that maybe it was a Cessna,
00:25:42.260 it was a smaller plane,
00:25:43.580 maybe some pilot
00:25:45.060 had gotten horrifically confused,
00:25:47.040 maybe a pilot
00:25:47.540 had a heart attack,
00:25:48.620 that it could have been
00:25:49.800 an accident.
00:25:50.500 As you were first
00:25:51.280 watching it,
00:25:52.600 people weren't sure
00:25:53.540 what happened.
00:25:55.200 And then,
00:25:56.800 at 9.03 a.m.,
00:25:58.700 the second plane
00:26:00.940 flew into the second tower.
00:26:04.120 And at that instant,
00:26:05.780 everyone watching it
00:26:07.160 knew what it was.
00:26:08.660 We knew that it was terrorism.
00:26:10.600 And the second plane
00:26:11.600 they had on video,
00:26:14.020 you could see
00:26:14.760 that it was a
00:26:15.680 full airliner
00:26:17.480 that crashed in.
00:26:20.700 It was United Airlines
00:26:21.640 Flight 175
00:26:22.700 that crashed into
00:26:24.760 the World Trade Center
00:26:25.700 South Tower.
00:26:26.900 The North Tower
00:26:27.840 had been hit
00:26:28.320 by American Airlines
00:26:29.280 Flight 11.
00:26:31.180 And when it crashed,
00:26:33.180 you knew you were watching
00:26:34.460 hundreds of people
00:26:35.500 die in an instant.
00:26:36.580 Everyone on that plane
00:26:37.660 was incinerated.
00:26:39.260 Everyone in the towers
00:26:40.280 where the airliner
00:26:41.400 crashed into
00:26:42.160 was incinerated.
00:26:43.080 Heidi was,
00:26:45.900 as I said,
00:26:46.340 at the White House
00:26:46.880 at the time.
00:26:47.640 And when the first plane
00:26:48.800 hit,
00:26:50.300 the Secret Service
00:26:51.160 came through
00:26:51.960 the halls
00:26:53.240 of the White House
00:26:53.940 and they told everyone,
00:26:54.960 stay where you are.
00:26:55.720 We don't know
00:26:56.240 what's happened,
00:26:56.840 but just stay where you are.
00:26:58.900 When the second plane
00:27:00.100 hit,
00:27:01.240 they realized,
00:27:02.220 like everyone did,
00:27:03.080 that America
00:27:04.100 was under attack.
00:27:05.860 And the Secret Service
00:27:07.080 agents ran
00:27:08.700 down the hallways.
00:27:10.560 and they were yelling
00:27:12.900 at people,
00:27:14.020 get out.
00:27:14.840 Get out now.
00:27:16.380 They said,
00:27:16.920 run.
00:27:17.340 Do not walk.
00:27:18.680 Run.
00:27:19.220 Get out of the building.
00:27:20.480 Get out of here.
00:27:22.160 So Heidi got up
00:27:24.120 and ran.
00:27:25.560 Her car was parked
00:27:27.120 in a parking garage
00:27:27.900 and she was not able
00:27:28.580 to get her car out
00:27:29.340 because they were not
00:27:29.760 letting anyone
00:27:30.160 get their cars out.
00:27:31.520 So you were mentioning
00:27:32.620 people walking,
00:27:33.820 walking in bare feet.
00:27:36.420 Well,
00:27:36.580 one of those people
00:27:37.340 was Heidi Suzanne Cruz,
00:27:39.420 who walked across
00:27:41.920 Memorial Bridge.
00:27:42.920 She pulled off
00:27:43.520 her high heels
00:27:44.200 and walked in bare feet
00:27:46.780 from the White House
00:27:48.580 to Northern Virginia.
00:27:50.500 And I'm watching this
00:27:52.520 in horror
00:27:53.300 as it plays out
00:27:54.380 and the cell phone
00:27:55.100 coverage was terrible.
00:27:56.380 So I was having
00:27:56.800 a really hard time
00:27:57.900 getting in touch
00:27:58.560 with Heidi
00:27:58.980 because the towers
00:27:59.880 were overloaded.
00:28:03.160 Then,
00:28:04.160 at 9.37 a.m.,
00:28:06.680 a third flight
00:28:09.040 crashed into the Pentagon.
00:28:11.280 American Airlines
00:28:12.160 Flight 77
00:28:14.300 crashed into the Pentagon
00:28:15.540 at 9.37 a.m.
00:28:17.780 When that happened,
00:28:20.100 one of the news networks,
00:28:21.700 I think it was ABC News,
00:28:23.240 reported that a plane
00:28:25.160 had hit the White House
00:28:26.080 because from the angle
00:28:27.300 of the cameras,
00:28:28.520 it looked like there was
00:28:29.620 smoke coming up
00:28:30.420 from the White House.
00:28:31.220 You couldn't quite tell
00:28:32.120 it was the Pentagon.
00:28:33.740 I'm sitting there
00:28:34.660 looking at it going,
00:28:35.560 holy crap, Heidi's
00:28:36.540 in the White House.
00:28:37.200 Like that,
00:28:37.660 you want to talk about
00:28:38.960 freaking you out,
00:28:40.860 seeing on the news
00:28:41.960 that a plane
00:28:42.520 has just hit
00:28:43.040 where your wife is
00:28:44.140 scares the hell
00:28:46.280 out of you.
00:28:47.480 I connected with Heidi
00:28:48.680 shortly thereafter
00:28:49.520 and realized
00:28:50.460 she was okay.
00:28:52.300 But I found out later
00:28:53.700 that on that plane,
00:28:56.300 on American Airlines
00:28:57.260 Flight 77,
00:28:58.480 was a good friend
00:28:59.520 to mine
00:28:59.860 and a good friend
00:29:00.420 of Heidi's.
00:29:01.880 Barbara Olson.
00:29:02.800 Barbara Olson
00:29:03.380 was an amazing lawyer
00:29:04.900 she was married
00:29:06.420 to Ted Olson,
00:29:07.580 who was the U.S.
00:29:09.480 Solicitor General
00:29:10.220 at the time,
00:29:11.320 someone I've known
00:29:12.120 for 25 years.
00:29:13.420 He's an incredibly
00:29:14.420 talented Supreme Court
00:29:15.660 lawyer.
00:29:17.000 And Barbara
00:29:18.000 called Ted
00:29:20.420 from the plane
00:29:22.500 and her cell phone
00:29:23.300 connected
00:29:23.720 and Ted answered
00:29:24.540 the phone.
00:29:26.320 And she said,
00:29:27.380 what do I do?
00:29:29.000 Now, I want you
00:29:29.640 to imagine
00:29:30.320 you're sitting there
00:29:32.780 and you get
00:29:33.860 a phone call
00:29:34.500 from your wife
00:29:35.320 and you are
00:29:38.860 the number three
00:29:39.600 official
00:29:40.000 at the Department
00:29:40.620 of Justice.
00:29:41.160 You are watching
00:29:41.960 intently
00:29:42.440 what's unfolding.
00:29:43.880 You've seen
00:29:44.580 two planes
00:29:45.520 fly directly
00:29:46.680 into the World
00:29:47.460 Trade Center
00:29:48.060 towers
00:29:48.640 and you're
00:29:50.120 talking to
00:29:50.660 your wife
00:29:51.180 who knows,
00:29:52.940 you know
00:29:53.440 is on a plane
00:29:54.180 who had actually
00:29:54.720 stayed over
00:29:55.440 an extra day
00:29:56.300 to celebrate
00:29:56.920 Ted's birthday.
00:29:57.600 And her question,
00:30:01.400 Barbara was
00:30:02.100 indomitable.
00:30:03.140 She was a fighter.
00:30:04.160 She was ferocious.
00:30:05.580 I loved Barbara Olson.
00:30:07.480 And her question
00:30:08.480 to Ted,
00:30:09.200 when she called Ted,
00:30:10.620 Ted knew
00:30:11.360 what the hijackers
00:30:13.340 intended.
00:30:13.920 He knew it was not,
00:30:15.260 look, prior to
00:30:16.000 September 11th
00:30:16.920 if a plane is hijacked,
00:30:19.340 people assumed,
00:30:20.440 okay, do what
00:30:21.200 the hijackers want
00:30:22.400 and, you know,
00:30:24.120 maybe they'll fly
00:30:24.860 to Cuba.
00:30:25.520 Maybe they'll go
00:30:26.340 land somewhere
00:30:27.140 and demand a ransom.
00:30:29.220 People didn't think
00:30:30.580 the idea of flying
00:30:31.820 a jet airliner
00:30:33.440 into a building
00:30:35.400 and murdering
00:30:36.200 thousands of people,
00:30:37.080 that was not something
00:30:38.260 anyone had ever done.
00:30:39.760 It's not something
00:30:40.280 anyone had ever thought of.
00:30:41.520 But Ted is on the phone
00:30:42.760 with his wife
00:30:43.540 and she's saying,
00:30:46.280 what do I do?
00:30:46.940 And that's the last word
00:30:47.980 he heard.
00:30:48.540 What do I do?
00:30:49.180 How do we stop them?
00:30:51.320 And the line goes dead.
00:30:53.540 Now,
00:30:54.320 after that happens,
00:30:57.140 an hour and 41 minutes
00:31:00.400 after the planes
00:31:02.960 hit the World Trade Center
00:31:04.180 towers,
00:31:05.100 the towers collapsed.
00:31:09.020 And I have to say
00:31:10.500 the image
00:31:11.160 everyone who was
00:31:12.640 watching
00:31:13.380 the television,
00:31:16.080 in the hour and 41 minutes
00:31:18.880 that led up to it,
00:31:19.820 you saw the flames
00:31:20.820 going up and up
00:31:21.680 and up the building
00:31:22.420 as the jet fuel
00:31:23.340 burned hotter
00:31:24.160 and hotter
00:31:24.660 and hotter.
00:31:25.860 You saw an image
00:31:26.980 that they no longer
00:31:27.740 show on the news
00:31:28.540 but we saw over
00:31:29.540 and over and over
00:31:30.160 again that day,
00:31:31.040 which is people
00:31:32.320 in the upper floors
00:31:33.440 jumping to their deaths.
00:31:36.080 And you could see bodies
00:31:37.480 when the first one went,
00:31:38.500 you're like,
00:31:38.740 what is that?
00:31:40.960 And you'd see
00:31:41.760 a person jump.
00:31:42.600 You know,
00:31:43.100 you're at the window,
00:31:44.200 you've got flames,
00:31:45.200 you have a choice
00:31:45.760 between being burned to death,
00:31:47.460 you're about to be incinerated,
00:31:48.780 or jumping to your death
00:31:50.360 and we saw person
00:31:51.220 after person
00:31:51.800 after person
00:31:52.440 jumping off
00:31:53.920 from the upper floors
00:31:55.160 of those towers.
00:31:57.160 And an hour and 41 minutes later,
00:31:59.000 the two collapsed
00:31:59.840 and every person,
00:32:00.940 I think everyone said
00:32:02.120 the same words
00:32:03.040 as you watched that.
00:32:05.700 Oh my God.
00:32:07.720 Yeah.
00:32:08.680 Like,
00:32:09.380 it didn't,
00:32:10.220 as you're watching it,
00:32:11.640 you did not believe
00:32:13.060 the towers could collapse
00:32:14.420 and as you saw them
00:32:15.480 come down,
00:32:16.880 you realize
00:32:17.740 there are thousands
00:32:19.000 of people
00:32:19.880 being murdered
00:32:22.140 all at once.
00:32:24.380 And the brave men
00:32:25.540 that were going up there
00:32:26.860 taking the stairs
00:32:27.880 because the elevators
00:32:28.680 had locked down.
00:32:30.700 The firefighters
00:32:31.580 who ran in
00:32:32.640 and ran in
00:32:33.340 and ran in
00:32:33.920 and ran towards the flames
00:32:35.300 and who died
00:32:36.680 and knew
00:32:37.320 they were risking death.
00:32:40.180 They did it
00:32:41.180 and they did it
00:32:42.040 because they thought
00:32:42.940 they were going to
00:32:43.460 save people's lives.
00:32:45.420 And I go back
00:32:46.200 to,
00:32:46.480 if you've never been
00:32:48.560 to the 9-11
00:32:49.240 museum,
00:32:50.880 the memorial,
00:32:51.800 you should go.
00:32:53.740 And I will never forget
00:32:55.400 picking up,
00:32:56.220 they have these phones
00:32:57.080 that you can pick up
00:32:57.880 and listen to
00:32:58.680 the final messages
00:32:59.800 and the phone calls
00:33:01.520 that people left
00:33:02.960 that died on those planes.
00:33:05.880 And if you've never
00:33:07.680 listened to them,
00:33:08.400 you should.
00:33:08.820 A lot of them
00:33:09.340 are actually on YouTube.
00:33:10.760 I would encourage you
00:33:11.640 to go and listen to those.
00:33:12.960 And you tell me
00:33:14.720 if these men
00:33:16.780 deserve to live.
00:33:18.280 And they don't.
00:33:19.740 And the White House
00:33:20.580 could stop this,
00:33:21.460 but they're not
00:33:21.940 trying to stop this.
00:33:23.100 They're wanting this
00:33:23.940 to happen
00:33:24.480 because they want
00:33:25.220 to close Gitmo
00:33:26.140 for political reasons.
00:33:27.820 The same way
00:33:28.460 they don't care
00:33:28.980 about anyone
00:33:29.480 that was left behind
00:33:30.900 that died in Afghanistan
00:33:32.640 after we pulled out
00:33:33.800 on the anniversary
00:33:34.440 of 9-11.
00:33:35.640 They don't care
00:33:36.240 about any of the people
00:33:37.140 that risked their lives
00:33:38.120 for literally
00:33:39.660 over a decade.
00:33:40.620 many of the translators
00:33:42.220 and others
00:33:42.720 that aided and abetted
00:33:43.760 American soldiers
00:33:45.520 and our allies
00:33:46.580 from around the world
00:33:47.500 that were left there
00:33:48.300 to be tortured
00:33:49.120 and brutalized
00:33:50.640 and murdered
00:33:51.200 and raped
00:33:51.920 because they didn't have
00:33:54.040 an adequate plan
00:33:55.800 to get people out.
00:33:57.160 We still are,
00:33:57.940 to this day,
00:33:58.520 and Senator,
00:33:58.820 I know you know this,
00:34:00.000 there are still
00:34:01.180 men that serve this country.
00:34:03.500 I was in Fort Bragg
00:34:04.460 a week and a half ago,
00:34:05.740 and there are still
00:34:07.320 people there
00:34:08.100 that are trying
00:34:09.060 to get their translators
00:34:10.500 and others
00:34:11.780 that helped Americans
00:34:13.220 and, by the way,
00:34:13.940 saved their American
00:34:14.860 soldiers' lives
00:34:15.920 and when bombs went off,
00:34:18.240 they risked their lives
00:34:19.320 and were taking fire
00:34:20.260 to help drag a man
00:34:21.420 off the battlefield
00:34:22.180 or from a Humvee
00:34:23.360 that's on fire
00:34:24.220 that has been blown up
00:34:25.520 with a roadside bomb
00:34:26.300 and they're still
00:34:27.500 in Afghanistan
00:34:28.320 trying to get them out
00:34:29.260 because the Taliban
00:34:30.080 has that list
00:34:31.080 and they are hunting
00:34:31.960 them down now
00:34:33.200 and have hunted
00:34:33.960 down many already
00:34:35.140 and this president
00:34:36.220 says,
00:34:36.540 no, no, no,
00:34:36.780 we don't care about that.
00:34:38.100 We're going to have
00:34:38.460 a celebration
00:34:39.060 that we got out
00:34:39.700 of Afghanistan
00:34:40.240 and ended America's
00:34:41.260 longest war
00:34:42.000 and that'll make
00:34:43.060 people love us
00:34:43.860 the same way they think,
00:34:45.240 well, Gitmo's a terrible place
00:34:46.520 because people
00:34:47.020 were waterboarded there.
00:34:48.060 We want to close
00:34:48.760 that down as well
00:34:49.800 and if you are
00:34:51.460 a family member
00:34:52.420 and you receive
00:34:54.320 this letter,
00:34:55.860 I cannot imagine
00:34:57.380 that you would ever
00:34:58.020 have any faith
00:34:58.780 in the United States
00:34:59.400 of America
00:34:59.860 ever again
00:35:00.720 on any level
00:35:01.580 if we allow
00:35:03.020 this to happen.
00:35:03.920 The only way
00:35:04.320 we stop it
00:35:05.020 is pressure.
00:35:05.700 Am I wrong?
00:35:06.140 There has to be
00:35:09.020 public outcry.
00:35:10.480 That is the only
00:35:12.060 thing conceivably
00:35:13.640 that can change it
00:35:15.620 and I've got to say
00:35:16.200 one of the shocking
00:35:18.480 and shameful things
00:35:19.640 is the national media
00:35:21.540 isn't covering this.
00:35:23.040 Ask yourself,
00:35:24.140 did you see this
00:35:25.240 on the news tonight?
00:35:26.420 Was it on the
00:35:27.040 six o'clock news?
00:35:27.900 Was it on the
00:35:28.400 national news?
00:35:29.600 Have you read it
00:35:30.560 in the newspaper?
00:35:33.060 You know,
00:35:35.100 there is an exception
00:35:36.000 which at least
00:35:37.280 one station
00:35:38.120 in New York City
00:35:39.140 and kudos to them
00:35:41.280 covered it
00:35:41.960 and Ben,
00:35:43.600 we ought to play
00:35:44.060 what they covered
00:35:44.680 because I appreciate
00:35:46.160 at least one station
00:35:47.180 covering it.
00:35:48.360 Yeah,
00:35:48.620 in New York City,
00:35:49.760 CBS Channel 2,
00:35:52.860 they did cover this
00:35:54.660 from a local standpoint.
00:35:57.120 This was in the national,
00:35:58.140 this was local CBS news
00:35:59.960 in New York City
00:36:01.420 and I want you to hear
00:36:02.240 what they had to say
00:36:03.200 about this.
00:36:04.700 The suspected mastermind
00:36:06.300 of the September 11th
00:36:07.440 terror attacks
00:36:08.280 along with four
00:36:09.100 other defendants
00:36:10.100 could escape
00:36:11.380 the death penalty
00:36:12.280 under a plea agreement
00:36:13.560 being considered.
00:36:14.920 CBS 2's Dick Brennan
00:36:15.960 is hearing from
00:36:16.800 family members
00:36:17.580 who are now
00:36:18.520 outraged.
00:36:19.460 Dick.
00:36:19.900 Indeed they are,
00:36:20.720 Christine.
00:36:21.160 The prosecution
00:36:21.740 of the 9-11 defendants
00:36:23.260 at Guantanamo Bay
00:36:24.140 has been delayed
00:36:24.640 for years,
00:36:25.480 but military prosecutors
00:36:27.160 and defense lawyers
00:36:28.220 had begun exploring
00:36:29.800 a negotiated resolution
00:36:31.440 to the case,
00:36:32.320 but a potential deal
00:36:33.520 that's being floated
00:36:34.340 has infuriated
00:36:35.400 some 9-11 family members.
00:36:37.580 Generally,
00:36:38.140 I just think
00:36:38.560 that the consensus
00:36:39.260 is that it's a bad deal.
00:36:41.320 Daniel Bellardinelli
00:36:42.160 lost his uncle
00:36:42.860 William Cashman
00:36:43.680 on Flight 93,
00:36:44.880 which crashed
00:36:45.680 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania
00:36:46.900 on September 11th.
00:36:48.260 He says the five defendants,
00:36:49.800 including the suspected
00:36:50.660 mastermind,
00:36:51.400 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed,
00:36:52.460 deserve no mercy.
00:36:53.820 I'm personally
00:36:54.700 a very forgiving person,
00:36:56.880 as is my family,
00:36:58.520 but their actions
00:37:00.460 are unforgivable.
00:37:01.740 But the Pentagon
00:37:02.120 sent this letter
00:37:02.980 to 9-11 families
00:37:04.140 revealing plea deals
00:37:05.440 are being considered
00:37:06.220 in which the five men
00:37:07.320 would accept
00:37:07.960 criminal responsibility
00:37:08.900 for their actions
00:37:09.840 and plead guilty
00:37:10.980 in exchange
00:37:11.620 for not receiving
00:37:12.380 the death penalty.
00:37:13.380 It's more heartbroken.
00:37:14.900 Kristen Breitweiser's
00:37:15.960 husband, Ron,
00:37:16.580 died in the World Trade Center
00:37:17.680 and she can't understand
00:37:19.160 why a deal
00:37:19.800 would be offered.
00:37:20.660 I thought I lived
00:37:21.360 in the United States
00:37:22.320 of America.
00:37:23.040 I thought we were a nation
00:37:24.580 based upon the rule of law
00:37:25.920 and obviously
00:37:27.240 that's turned out
00:37:28.880 not to be the case.
00:37:30.140 The five men
00:37:30.740 have been at Guantanamo
00:37:31.740 in a kind of legal limbo
00:37:32.960 with delays
00:37:33.840 and disputes
00:37:34.440 that have grinded
00:37:35.180 the wheels of justice
00:37:35.960 to a practical halt
00:37:37.080 in part because
00:37:38.180 the CIA interrogations
00:37:39.600 of the suspects
00:37:40.300 that critics
00:37:41.080 called torture.
00:37:42.420 A lawyer for one
00:37:43.000 of the defendants
00:37:43.620 said last year
00:37:44.560 a plea deal
00:37:45.220 would end the impasse.
00:37:46.460 She is willing
00:37:47.180 to plead guilty,
00:37:49.360 serve a long sentence
00:37:50.340 at Guantanamo
00:37:51.140 in exchange
00:37:52.160 for medical care
00:37:53.160 for his torture
00:37:53.780 and taking the death penalty
00:37:55.540 off the table.
00:37:56.300 But that's not enough
00:37:57.300 for Daniel Ballardinelli
00:37:58.440 when he thinks about
00:37:59.460 the horror of Flight 93.
00:38:01.260 I was supposed to be
00:38:02.200 on the flight.
00:38:03.060 I canceled.
00:38:04.040 And I saw the photo
00:38:04.800 of the field.
00:38:05.720 It just made me think
00:38:06.620 like, oh my God,
00:38:07.180 that's where I could have died.
00:38:08.440 They're taking the death penalty
00:38:09.400 off the table
00:38:10.260 for someone
00:38:10.860 that committed
00:38:11.560 a heinous crime.
00:38:13.080 Beyond heinous.
00:38:14.040 These are awful.
00:38:15.000 These aren't,
00:38:15.420 they're not even human
00:38:16.280 what they did.
00:38:18.400 They're not even human
00:38:19.680 what they did.
00:38:20.700 Senator,
00:38:20.940 rarely does a show
00:38:24.060 make me angry
00:38:24.740 or frustrated.
00:38:26.500 I would challenge
00:38:27.840 everyone
00:38:29.140 to go
00:38:30.520 and to
00:38:31.460 Google
00:38:32.080 the mastermind
00:38:33.020 of 9-11,
00:38:33.820 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
00:38:34.740 Read his history.
00:38:36.980 Read who he is.
00:38:38.140 Read how long
00:38:38.680 you've been doing this.
00:38:39.740 Look at the other four.
00:38:41.760 Ramsey
00:38:42.220 is another one
00:38:43.260 who is a horrific
00:38:44.240 human being.
00:38:45.080 These people
00:38:45.480 were involved,
00:38:46.580 by the way,
00:38:47.000 in beheadings.
00:38:48.800 Daniel Pearl
00:38:49.500 and other beheadings,
00:38:52.060 these are not
00:38:53.000 human beings.
00:38:54.620 These are sadistic
00:38:55.740 people that do not
00:38:57.200 deserve to live.
00:38:58.900 And they are the worst
00:39:00.260 people in the world
00:39:02.420 and not a single
00:39:03.500 country wants them.
00:39:05.280 I think that's part
00:39:06.220 of what people
00:39:06.720 don't understand
00:39:07.240 about the reason
00:39:08.640 why they want
00:39:09.040 this plea deal
00:39:09.740 is we've tried
00:39:11.240 to get them out.
00:39:12.480 Daniel Pearl,
00:39:13.380 again,
00:39:13.780 some of our younger
00:39:14.480 listeners may not
00:39:15.320 remember this.
00:39:16.160 they beheaded
00:39:18.200 him live
00:39:20.040 on the internet.
00:39:21.460 They held
00:39:22.760 his head
00:39:23.460 and with
00:39:25.040 like a sword,
00:39:26.700 a giant knife,
00:39:28.060 they severed
00:39:29.000 his neck
00:39:30.160 and cut
00:39:30.760 his head
00:39:31.380 off his body
00:39:32.240 and they
00:39:32.680 broadcast it
00:39:33.960 to the world.
00:39:36.660 And used it
00:39:37.600 to recruit people
00:39:38.460 on top of that.
00:39:39.100 Yes,
00:39:39.220 it's how they
00:39:40.040 brought in
00:39:40.680 other religious
00:39:41.880 fanatics
00:39:42.460 and psychopaths
00:39:43.600 who wanted
00:39:44.020 to murder
00:39:44.440 Americans.
00:39:45.460 And this
00:39:47.100 administration
00:39:47.700 does not
00:39:48.500 take fighting
00:39:49.220 that evil
00:39:49.820 seriously.
00:39:52.160 And,
00:39:52.760 you know...
00:39:55.480 Let me ask
00:39:56.140 this,
00:39:56.340 what can we
00:39:56.820 do?
00:39:57.140 I mean,
00:39:57.400 is this where
00:39:58.020 we say,
00:39:58.660 hey,
00:39:59.580 if you're a
00:40:00.140 listener and
00:40:00.800 there are
00:40:01.500 hundreds of
00:40:02.400 thousands of
00:40:03.100 you that will
00:40:03.480 hear this,
00:40:04.640 do they need
00:40:05.220 to all call
00:40:05.920 their congressman
00:40:06.640 centers and
00:40:07.100 say,
00:40:07.320 hey,
00:40:07.620 you need to
00:40:08.080 stand up for
00:40:08.540 the victims
00:40:09.360 of 9-11
00:40:09.960 and say no
00:40:10.700 to this plea
00:40:11.160 deal and put
00:40:11.960 pressure on the
00:40:12.480 White House?
00:40:13.000 We need to
00:40:13.620 speak out if
00:40:14.320 you care
00:40:15.000 about the
00:40:15.600 heroes of
00:40:16.280 9-11.
00:40:17.360 If you care
00:40:18.060 about the
00:40:18.500 firefighters and
00:40:19.560 the police
00:40:20.240 officers who
00:40:21.080 rushed into
00:40:22.480 those towers,
00:40:23.460 who rushed
00:40:23.980 into the
00:40:24.560 Pentagon to
00:40:25.220 pull soldiers,
00:40:27.140 burning soldiers
00:40:27.980 out of harm's
00:40:28.740 way,
00:40:29.080 who lost
00:40:29.600 their lives,
00:40:30.860 if you care
00:40:32.460 about that,
00:40:33.660 speak out and
00:40:34.660 demand justice.
00:40:36.140 And by the way,
00:40:36.840 I'm going to
00:40:37.060 make a prediction
00:40:37.680 as well,
00:40:39.180 which is that
00:40:40.600 these are not
00:40:42.540 the only
00:40:43.100 mass murderers
00:40:44.160 that I think
00:40:45.260 this administration
00:40:46.060 is going to
00:40:46.740 refuse to
00:40:47.600 follow federal
00:40:48.280 law and
00:40:49.300 impose the
00:40:49.820 death penalty.
00:40:50.140 I'm going to
00:40:50.380 make a prediction
00:40:50.860 right now,
00:40:51.540 which is Joe
00:40:52.100 Biden,
00:40:53.080 before he
00:40:53.940 leaves the
00:40:54.540 White House,
00:40:55.840 will commute
00:40:56.700 the sentence
00:40:57.400 of every
00:40:58.580 federal prisoner
00:41:00.160 on death row,
00:41:01.740 that he will do
00:41:02.320 it for every
00:41:03.000 one of them,
00:41:03.560 and that
00:41:04.220 includes,
00:41:05.240 it includes
00:41:06.300 the white
00:41:07.200 supremacist
00:41:08.120 and Nazi
00:41:09.020 who murdered
00:41:10.740 nine African
00:41:11.640 Americans at
00:41:12.400 the Mother
00:41:12.780 Emanuel AME
00:41:14.040 Church in
00:41:14.660 Charleston,
00:41:15.280 South Carolina,
00:41:16.460 in a horrific
00:41:17.380 hate crime.
00:41:18.220 He's on
00:41:18.660 federal death
00:41:19.240 row.
00:41:19.860 It includes
00:41:20.920 the Boston
00:41:21.580 bomber who
00:41:22.840 murdered innocent
00:41:23.680 people by
00:41:24.380 exploding a
00:41:25.160 bomb at the
00:41:25.780 Boston Marathon.
00:41:27.240 One of the
00:41:27.920 two brothers is
00:41:28.660 still alive.
00:41:29.360 He's on
00:41:29.840 death row.
00:41:31.400 And my
00:41:32.020 prediction right
00:41:32.840 now is Joe
00:41:34.740 Biden intends
00:41:35.940 to spare
00:41:37.360 every one of
00:41:38.340 these mass
00:41:38.980 murderers.
00:41:39.620 Every one of
00:41:40.360 them, many
00:41:40.820 of them, are
00:41:41.860 racist, bigoted,
00:41:43.560 homicidal lunatics.
00:41:45.820 And I think
00:41:47.200 we're going to
00:41:47.600 see him commute
00:41:48.540 all of their
00:41:49.700 sentences before
00:41:50.460 he leaves the
00:41:50.980 White House.
00:41:51.580 Well, if you
00:41:52.020 won't take out
00:41:53.280 the mastermind
00:41:54.000 of 9-11, and
00:41:55.480 you won't give
00:41:56.440 him the death
00:41:56.960 penalty, is
00:41:57.840 there anyone
00:41:58.360 that you'll
00:41:58.940 give it to?
00:41:59.800 I mean, it
00:42:00.440 doesn't get any
00:42:02.460 worse than this.
00:42:04.000 And the number
00:42:04.520 of people that
00:42:05.040 he killed,
00:42:05.940 and the number
00:42:06.540 of people
00:42:06.760 killed before
00:42:07.260 9-11, and
00:42:08.060 the number
00:42:08.300 of people he
00:42:08.740 killed after
00:42:09.240 9-11, and
00:42:09.860 the number
00:42:10.140 of people
00:42:10.480 that he
00:42:10.720 recruited to
00:42:11.400 kill men,
00:42:12.300 it's not just
00:42:13.140 9-11 that
00:42:13.760 Khalid Sheikh
00:42:14.160 Mohammed and
00:42:14.460 these other
00:42:14.720 four did.
00:42:15.400 It was what
00:42:16.200 they did after
00:42:16.880 9-11, when
00:42:17.740 we showed up
00:42:18.480 in Iraq and
00:42:19.300 Afghanistan, and
00:42:20.540 the recruitment
00:42:21.160 that they did
00:42:21.760 online to
00:42:22.540 bring in the
00:42:23.140 jihadists to
00:42:23.780 come after and
00:42:24.420 kill American
00:42:25.020 soldiers and
00:42:25.660 our allies.
00:42:27.020 The number
00:42:28.020 of people who
00:42:29.000 died is in
00:42:29.600 the thousands
00:42:30.220 and thousands
00:42:31.220 because of
00:42:32.720 their actions
00:42:33.500 before 9-11
00:42:34.620 that day, and
00:42:36.720 after 9-11,
00:42:37.820 when they, in
00:42:38.220 their words, they
00:42:39.120 were just getting
00:42:39.860 started.
00:42:40.440 They wanted that
00:42:41.200 catalyst.
00:42:41.860 That was the
00:42:42.460 firework to
00:42:44.240 ignite the war
00:42:45.420 with the United
00:42:47.300 States of
00:42:47.800 America.
00:42:48.180 They wanted
00:42:48.720 that war, and
00:42:50.060 that was their
00:42:50.700 goal.
00:42:51.240 And now to
00:42:51.720 give them a
00:42:52.320 plea deal, I
00:42:54.480 think is maybe
00:42:55.560 the worst thing
00:42:56.320 that Joe Biden
00:42:57.500 has ever done
00:42:58.260 to, if he
00:42:58.760 allows this to
00:42:59.360 happen.
00:42:59.780 Clearly it's
00:43:00.280 coming from
00:43:00.720 his directive.
00:43:01.920 I hope
00:43:02.220 everybody that's
00:43:02.860 listening, and
00:43:03.240 I just, I
00:43:03.820 don't, we
00:43:04.380 look, we
00:43:04.860 have commercials
00:43:06.040 that we do
00:43:06.600 folks, and
00:43:07.540 I'm just not
00:43:09.000 going to do
00:43:09.400 them anymore
00:43:10.080 tonight.
00:43:10.520 I don't want
00:43:11.140 to do them.
00:43:11.820 I think this
00:43:12.360 is more
00:43:12.740 important, and
00:43:14.020 I just don't
00:43:14.980 feel comfortable
00:43:15.760 doing that.
00:43:16.600 We'll get back
00:43:17.680 to what we
00:43:18.540 have to do
00:43:19.100 for the show,
00:43:19.560 but I'm just
00:43:20.000 going to say
00:43:20.480 now, it's
00:43:21.100 more important
00:43:21.680 that you guys
00:43:22.100 share this with
00:43:22.720 your family and
00:43:23.300 friends.
00:43:24.260 Share it on
00:43:24.840 social media.
00:43:25.940 No one is
00:43:26.680 covering this,
00:43:27.560 and we need
00:43:28.340 to make sure
00:43:29.220 that everybody
00:43:29.840 hears about
00:43:30.740 this before
00:43:31.800 Monday or
00:43:32.340 Tuesday of
00:43:33.540 next week, so
00:43:34.480 that there is
00:43:34.960 total outrage at
00:43:37.180 this administration
00:43:38.200 and anyone that
00:43:39.400 supports this.
00:43:41.360 Call your
00:43:42.160 congressman, call
00:43:43.160 your senator,
00:43:43.860 wherever you
00:43:44.540 live, let them
00:43:45.880 know that this
00:43:46.780 is something, as
00:43:47.580 an American, you're
00:43:48.360 not okay with.
00:43:49.640 Please put this
00:43:50.660 episode up where
00:43:51.420 other people see
00:43:52.080 it, and be
00:43:53.380 activists on
00:43:54.020 social media
00:43:54.440 yourself.

00:43:56.660 Demand that
00:43:58.060 the media
00:43:58.520 actually cover
00:44:00.040 the news
00:44:00.860 instead of
00:44:02.280 just being
00:44:02.820 partisan
00:44:03.240 propagandists.
00:44:04.580 Yeah, I
00:44:05.040 couldn't agree
00:44:05.500 more.
00:44:05.900 Senator, this
00:44:07.400 is when I
00:44:07.820 do, I
00:44:08.420 hate this
00:44:08.940 story, but I
00:44:09.640 love that we
00:44:10.120 have this
00:44:10.500 show to do
00:44:10.920 this.
00:44:11.700 Please share
00:44:12.300 it with all
00:44:12.560 your family
00:44:12.920 and friends,
00:44:13.680 and we will
00:44:14.380 see you back
00:44:14.980 here in a
00:44:15.560 couple of
00:44:15.860 days.
