00:38:00.000 Thank you.
00:38:30.000 Ladies and gentlemen, it is now my pleasure to introduce your Master of Ceremonies for
00:38:57.000 Good evening, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Deborah Yedlin.
00:39:10.000 Good evening, Calgary!
00:39:15.000 It's so great to see so many people here, supporting Canada, supporting Canadian Unity.
00:39:21.000 And because we have so many people who want to get into this room,
00:39:25.000 I need everybody to pretend I'm watching a Rocky Horror movie,
00:39:28.000 Rocky Horror Picture Show, move to the left.
00:39:32.000 Okay, so a couple to the left.
00:39:34.000 We can get Brooklyn from the doors.
00:39:45.000 Clearly, we're here because something matters to all of us.
00:39:50.000 Canada, Madden.
00:39:56.000 We will all here recognize that we're better together.
00:40:04.000 And that we have responsibility to each other, to our kids, our grandchildren, our neighbors,
00:40:11.000 neighbors, colleagues, and fellow Canadians to ensure that the results of next Monday's
00:40:18.000 vote are a resounding yes for Alberta. A resounding yes for Alberta remaining Canada.
00:40:32.000 This great country and this great province was disordered by people who were here long
00:40:41.520 before we arrived. 0.92
00:40:43.520 We stand today together at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers, a place where
00:40:50.240 two rivers flowing different directions meet.
00:40:53.840 A reminder that differences can coexist and find a path together.
00:41:01.440 A place where indigenous peoples came together to gather and to trade from the Ta'an Memorial.
00:41:07.440 A place we know as the CDC7 Territory, comprised of traditional territories of the Blackwood Confederacy,
00:41:14.440 including the Sik'a, the Ta'ani, the K'inai First Nations, the Tsuchuna Nation,
00:41:20.440 and the Stoney Dakota, including the Chiniki, Berespa, and Good Stoney First Nations.
00:41:31.440 Calvary is also known as the Kempiswaw community government to district 5, 6, and 10 urban indigenous people from across rural island.
00:41:41.440 And these nations have a long story to this land and their body values that are fundamental to our Canadian identity, mutual respect, a duty to one another, and a commitment to living in harmony.
00:41:55.440 I'm so honored to be here today, and I want to thank Thomas of Kazak for inviting me to be your MC.
00:42:12.440 But we all owe Thomas a huge thank you.
00:42:25.440 For his tireless work, for his belief in Canada, and to make sure that we can all be forever
00:42:35.440 Canadian.
00:42:36.440 We'll be hearing from a number of people this evening, including Thomas and Prime Minister
00:42:46.440 Cardi, and I have no doubt we will all leave here inspired and determined.
00:42:55.440 We're here because we know Canada is worth fighting for, because of all that we've
00:43:07.940 accomplished in our relatively young history, and what we will still accomplish together.
00:43:14.920 We are a just society.
00:43:17.500 We have welcomed strangers who sought safety, refuge, and new beginnings from far from parts
00:43:23.120 world for generations. And together, we have built this country, and this province. We
00:43:36.360 are reminded in scriptures from all faiths that we have a responsibility to welcome and
00:43:42.600 care for the strangers among us, and to protect the life, dignity, and worth of everyone,
00:43:49.360 regardless of identity or status.
00:43:59.760 Some of you here tonight have been here for many generations.
00:44:03.760 Others might be newcomers, and some of you might be like me,
00:44:09.160 first-generation Canadians, or parents coming to this country,
00:44:13.160 perhaps escaping war, persecution,
00:44:16.160 looking for opportunity, for a better life, a new beginning.
00:44:21.200 My parents thrived after World War II
00:44:24.480 with nothing but their education.
00:44:27.620 They rebuilt their lives with hope, dignity, acceptance,
00:44:33.480 and opportunity, giving my brother
00:44:35.920 and I the opportunities that were taken away from them,
00:44:39.460 raising us both as a child Canadians and elders.
00:44:46.160 From the absence of the Holocaust, Canada welcomed my purpose. 0.90
00:44:59.160 And that's why, no one, no one is going to take this country, our country, my country,
00:45:09.160 away from me or any of us.
00:45:16.160 Today, as the President of Calgary Chamber of Commerce connected to this community,
00:45:30.460 I know we sit on the cusp of a renewed era of prosperity and economic growth.
00:45:35.920 It's generational for Alberta and Canada.
00:45:40.380 We have what the world needs.
00:45:42.920 And more important than Prime Minister Kearney, we have an energy champion.
00:45:53.920 We have an Alberta champion.
00:45:59.920 We have a Canadian champion.
00:46:06.920 A Prime Minister who fundamentally understands the opportunity before us.
00:46:11.920 how we must not now to increase our exports to countries against security supply and diversity 0.94
00:46:19.680 a message was sent in ottawa and it was a seat loud and clear impediments to development have
00:46:27.520 been addressed and removed and as a province we cannot turn our backs on this generational
00:46:33.920 opportunity. It will hurt all of us, from coast to coast to coast.
00:46:46.920 A divided Canada business negotiating leverage has greater challenges to attract capital,
00:46:51.920 building infrastructure, securing supply chains, and bringing in talent.
00:46:56.920 A united Canada can mobilize resources, build infrastructure,
00:47:01.920 can strategically withstand the external geopolitical forces to secure our collective future
00:47:09.200 we must stay united as a country and on october 19 we must vote for the future not the past
00:47:18.960 We can't score on our own map, or humble in our own end zone, yes most of you know I can't
00:47:34.960 leave you the sports analogy alone.
00:47:36.960 And to provide their reasons, while we must stay united as a country, it's my pleasure
00:47:44.960 to introduce Calgary sports icon, someone I know well, CFL Hall of Famer, All-Star running back for
00:47:52.400 the Calgary Stampeders, two-time breakup champion and Chancellor Marius of the University of Calgary.
00:47:58.960 As a long-time football fan, it gives me great pleasure to hand the podium off to number nine, John Hortons.
00:48:14.960 How are we doing tonight?
00:48:28.960 So Canada doesn't necessarily work for everybody, not all the time.
00:48:41.960 I know it.
00:48:42.800 I lived it.
00:48:44.260 I've had my fair share of racial issues,
00:48:46.680 doors that didn't open,
00:48:48.500 and chances that never came.
00:48:51.700 But I've also had opportunities.
00:48:54.820 I've had choices.
00:48:56.800 Every day, I chose to make the next step.
00:49:00.160 And over time, those choices made me who I am.
00:49:04.260 And that's true for every person here, the choices we make every day make us.
00:49:16.140 Whether you were born here or you came here, every one of us chooses every day to make
00:49:22.140 our lives a little better, our families' lives a little better, our neighbors' lives
00:49:28.020 a little better.
00:49:29.020 And that's the Canada I believe in!
00:49:39.020 It's not a country that's finished.
00:49:41.020 A country we choose to build, to invent, to dream,
00:49:46.020 so everyone gets the chance they deserve.
00:49:51.020 Like many of us, I've been lying awake at night with some questions.
00:49:56.020 I hold the CFO of Russian record for an 880.
00:49:59.300 Normie Wong, former Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, held this record for 56 years!
00:50:08.580 So if Alberta's on Canada, whose record is it?
00:50:14.740 What about the Alberta-born winners of the Northern Star World of Canada's Athletes of the Year?
00:50:19.620 Mark Kupferi, Susan Natrath, would they still be Canada's best? 0.79
00:50:25.540 Who is the youngest Chancery Canadian history?
00:50:29.920 That's right here at the University of Scotland.
00:50:33.220 But, you know, would that be the youngest Chancery
00:50:37.720 Alberta history?
00:50:39.820 It's not the reason it doesn't have the same ring to it.
00:50:43.860 But at the very least, I think they can all agree,
00:50:46.000 the new record books would be a lot shorter.
00:50:51.700 Those are my questions, beyond the ones we all have.
00:50:55.440 But here's what I know for sure.
00:50:58.400 I believe mine this morning is a perfectly good day
00:51:01.520 for a football game.
00:51:05.920 I believe that pancakes think better when they're free
00:51:09.180 and flipped off the back of a truck wagon.
00:51:14.620 I believe that February, a Chinook of February,
00:51:17.760 is proof that the members like us more than have to do.
00:51:25.440 And I believe story is a complete sentence, and it is a complete conversation.
00:51:34.460 And most of all, I believe Calgary is the best city in the world.
00:51:42.440 And why?
00:51:44.000 Because we've got all the resources, but not only the ones in the ground.
00:51:48.060 We've got the attitude.
00:51:49.960 Whatever the circumstances, we get it done.
00:51:52.680 As we don't wait to be asked, emergency volunteers like the competitive sport, food banks, universities,
00:52:01.680 hockey rinks, minor soccer fields.
00:52:03.680 If something needs to do, an alert is already there with support and a service.
00:52:10.680 We're part of a country just like us.
00:52:13.680 A country that built the world's longest coastline from frozen rocks, deep forest, and sheer determination.
00:52:19.680 A country where you'll dig a stranger's car
00:52:22.280 with four feet of soap and refuse the tips they give you.
00:52:27.760 A country where kindness isn't softness, it's strength.
00:52:41.600 Now, I'll boot that mine for you.
00:52:45.580 In 2013, he was in the West Side on the prison turf
00:52:48.080 I'm hearing cheers in the audience for some reason, minus 40, the only temperature where
00:53:02.000 Celsius and Fahrenheit agree, but it's still one that Rough Riders fans will take their
00:53:07.420 shirts off.
00:53:08.420 But honestly, it was the most spiritual experience of my life, because standing on that field,
00:53:14.080 I understood. We didn't lose to better players. We lost to a team that believed in something more.
00:53:22.260 They weren't selfish. That year, the breakup was in Regina, and they were playing to win in their hometown.
00:53:28.540 They were playing for their home, and they won.
00:53:32.340 The next year, during the year of the horse's death, perfect year for a Calgary team to win.
00:53:38.420 We played for the breakup, and we won in Vancouver, my hometown.
00:53:42.740 And that's when it clicks for me.
00:53:45.740 Few things in life improve when we give in to our selfish urges.
00:53:50.740 Not a team, not a city, not a country.
00:53:59.740 Everything improves when we play for each other.
00:54:02.740 So today, let's play like our home depends on it.
00:54:12.740 We played for the volunteer who shows up with the Disney coffee box.
00:54:17.100 We played for the student at U County who's going to cure something that we haven't even named yet.
00:54:21.900 We played for that driver's fan and the staff fan who trash-talk each other all season and still chubber each other's drivers.
00:54:29.700 We played for the next generation so they inherit more than we did.
00:54:33.920 And we played for Canada
00:54:41.320 Because without it
00:54:43.580 Conor McDavid is on the other team
00:54:45.840 Who used to see him go top order?
00:54:51.300 Because we are not just lines on a map
00:54:54.260 Because we are so much more than our differences
00:54:58.400 Because we are one team
00:55:01.560 From McMahon Stadium to Parliament Hill, from coast to coast to coast, we share one home!
00:55:15.560 My name is John Fornish and I am a Calgarian, I am an Albertan, and I am Canadian!
00:55:31.560 Let's give it up one more time for John Carter.
00:55:49.440 It is now my pleasure to formally introduce Thomas Kassel.
00:56:00.320 Thomas' story exemplifies what Canada is all about.
00:56:05.320 Born in Poland, Thomas integrated to Canada's young man,
00:56:09.080 attended high school and university in Edmonton,
00:56:11.560 and went on to serve Albertans for 15 years
00:56:14.480 as an elected member of the Legislative Assembly.
00:56:17.440 During his tenure, he held several cabinet portfolios,
00:56:20.920 including employment and immigration, education,
00:56:23.960 and he also served as Deputy Premier of Alberta.
00:56:27.280 He has long been a voice for newcomers, for inclusion,
00:56:30.800 and for a Canada that welcomes people
00:56:33.460 like it did his family, and my family,
00:56:36.440 and many of your families.
00:56:38.320 His passion for United Canada has inspired many of us
00:56:42.260 as he has risk-crossed the province
00:56:44.520 in his 33-year-old bus over there,
00:56:49.360 seeking shell burdens about how we must all be
00:56:54.520 forever Canadian.
00:56:57.280 Thank you.
00:57:27.280 Thank you.
00:57:46.640 .
00:57:55.280 Let's send a good message not only to the legislature and not only to the rest of Canada but to the world that this country cannot be torn apart.
00:58:25.280 A majority of our virtual students want to consider not being Canadian.
00:58:32.280 Once and for all, let's put separatism in bed.
00:58:55.280 Thank you.
00:59:25.280 Ladies and gentlemen, Obama's assistant to Calgary.
00:59:35.280 Well, good evening, Calgary. How are you?
00:59:42.280 There are more than 7,000 of you over here, and I think people are still lining up trying to give in.
00:59:49.280 I cannot thank you enough. Thank you.
00:59:55.280 But tonight is about you, every single one of you in this room, and other Albertans who
01:00:02.520 are watching us across the province on various streets and on new streets.
01:00:08.200 Because you've built the biggest movement in the history of Alberta.
01:00:13.360 Every single one of you.
01:00:15.760 And I thank you for that.
01:00:18.760 You have been working for the past 18 months, first starting to collect signatures on applications,
01:00:28.760 and you collected nearly half a million signatures.
01:00:32.760 That is all thanks to you.
01:00:38.760 And 18,000 of you signed up as volunteers across Alberta,
01:00:43.760 and some of you are still out there working giving out lawn signs and making sure
01:00:48.080 that everybody comes out and votes thank you for that as well
01:00:55.760 just so you know you put out over 100 000 lawn signs on private properties
01:01:01.200 that has to be some kind of a record
01:01:07.520 but what you have done is something really incredible because we together built a movement
01:01:12.640 that stands for something that doesn't divide us and welcomes everybody.
01:01:19.640 And then we had people from all walks of life, those who were lucky enough and won the lottery
01:01:24.640 who were born in Canada, and then we had people like me who were lucky enough to end up in Canada.
01:01:30.640 And we're all from all different political backgrounds.
01:01:42.740 And then we had left-winging parties, and right-winging parties, and the other Federation
01:01:47.640 of Labor, and other groups who were all pulling in together to make this happen.
01:01:52.620 And I thank you for that as well.
01:01:55.620 Now, some of you often ask me why did I do this.
01:02:01.620 Well, I'll share with you tonight.
01:02:03.620 For me, this was a little bit of a personal journey.
01:02:06.620 As you can tell by my accent, I wasn't born over here.
01:02:09.620 In 1982, Canada accepted me and my family from then totalitarian communist Poland.
01:02:16.620 And you welcomed us.
01:02:18.620 You became a second family.
01:02:20.620 and you gave me and my family opportunities we never thought we could ever have and i thank you
01:02:26.220 for that as well and i know i'm preaching the choir i don't know if you convert anybody in
01:02:37.580 this room you know what a marvelous country canada is
01:02:41.020 And being Canadian is not where you were born, it is not where you live, but it is who we
01:02:53.620 are.
01:02:54.620 It's part of our identity and no one has the right to take that away from us.
01:03:02.620 And we are so fortunate because in these turbulent geopolitical times, the world is looking to
01:03:13.620 Canada.
01:03:14.620 They're looking to us for leadership, they're looking to us for value-based policies, and
01:03:19.620 they're looking to us for stability.
01:03:22.620 And our Prime Minister is providing that right now to the world.
01:03:27.620 So thank you forever, Canadians, but our job is not done yet.
01:03:36.620 It is not October 19 2010.
01:03:38.620 Make sure that every single one of you and every person you know comes out and votes.
01:03:44.620 Because we need to deliver a very strong message, not only to the other legislature,
01:03:51.620 but to all Canadians across Canada, that Albertans will not be a weak link in our Confederation.
01:03:59.620 We are as proud of being Canadian as any other Canadian in any other province in Canada.
01:04:13.620 And we must send a message to the rest of the world that the countries cannot be divided.
01:04:18.620 We are strong together and we will persevere any obstacles that are being thrown at us.
01:04:25.620 So I thank you. Thank you for everything that has happened.
01:04:30.620 And now, without any further ado, I want to introduce your civic leader,
01:04:37.620 Mayor Jeremy Parkes. I think I should be calling this Mr. Worship, Jeremy Parkes,
01:04:44.620 who has been a phenomenal ally in this and has been working as hard as all of us have on keeping Canada together.
01:04:51.620 So please, Your Worship, Jeremy Barnes.
01:05:14.620 Are there any Canadians in the house tonight?
01:05:21.620 This isn't Cal, why should we make a noise? 0.94
01:05:33.620 I had a very different speech planned for tonight.
01:05:38.620 I wanted to talk about my father, who came to Canada seven years ago today, from communist hunger in the 56th Revolution.
01:05:49.620 I wanted to talk about how this country welcomed him as a refugee.
01:05:54.620 I wanted to talk about how his queer son grew up to be the mayor of Calgary.
01:06:08.620 I wanted to talk about why I'm so proud to be an Albertan and a Canadian and why you
01:06:28.800 be proud to be bold.
01:06:29.800 But after today's tragedy, there's something even more important that I want to talk about.
01:06:40.800 And my predecessor, and all joking aside, my predecessor, former Mayor Natschie, is
01:06:46.800 with us tonight.
01:06:47.800 He knows that there are days like this when the chains of office, we have these chains
01:06:52.800 put on your shoulders when you become a mayor, but there's days when the James deal off we
01:06:58.340 have again.
01:06:59.340 It was just hours ago that three people lost their lives, here in Calgary, here in Northeast
01:07:04.440 Calgary, in a horrific bus crash, and 16 more were injured, and in the middle of the chaos,
01:07:13.300 one brave Calgary police officer ran into a burning bus to save the life of a child.
01:07:20.800 and tonight staff officers fighting for their life to recover from their injuries at the hospital
01:07:32.620 and i want you all in this room here and i want all of you watching to think about what that means
01:07:39.280 in a moment of unimaginable danger someone put a stranger's life ahead of their room no questions
01:07:46.840 about where that child came from, no questions about who their parents voted for.
01:07:55.840 Just one Canadian who needed help, and another Canadian who answered the call.
01:08:02.840 That is courage, that is service, and that is the Canada that we believe in.
01:08:22.240 So, tonight, Calgary, I'm going to ask you a favor, I need your help.
01:08:27.400 I want that officer to hear us from their hospital bed.
01:08:32.500 And while we're at it, I want them to hear us in Edmonton.
01:08:36.680 God knows especially Edmonton these days.
01:08:39.700 I want them to hear us in Victoria.
01:08:44.080 I want them to hear us in Regina.
01:08:47.120 In Winnipeg.
01:08:49.100 In Toronto.
01:08:51.460 In Quebec City.
01:08:53.180 In Fredericton.
01:08:56.000 In Halifax.
01:08:57.400 in Charlottetown, in St. John's, and all the way north to White House, Yellowknife,
01:09:06.400 and Inuit.
01:09:07.400 I want to send that message to the rest of the country and I want them to hear us from
01:09:32.020 coast to coast to coast, because when one of us is hurting, all of Canada stands together.
01:09:46.980 Are you ready, Calgary?
01:09:50.740 Let's hear it for our Calgary Police Service.
01:10:08.020 Let's hear it for our Calgary Fire Department.
01:10:16.980 Let's hear it for the family's wedding at the hospital tonight.
01:10:31.980 Let's hear it for our public school teachers.
01:10:44.980 I care for every queer kid growing up in Alberta.
01:10:55.980 I was one of those kids.
01:10:58.980 I am one of those kids.
01:11:00.980 And I never thought I'd live to see the day
01:11:02.980 when someone like me would become mayor of Calgary.
01:11:05.980 For the kids here tonight,
01:11:07.980 I want you to know,
01:11:10.980 and Danielle, I want you to know too.
01:11:14.980 That no matter who you are, you are welcome in this city, you are loved in this city,
01:11:30.860 and you have a future in this country.
01:11:35.860 Let's hear it for trans rights.
01:11:50.860 Let's hear it for treaty rights. 0.82
01:12:00.860 We're all prenegating our promises to one another, one unbroken chain, our promises to one another matter, in this country, in this province, and in this city. 0.72
01:12:17.860 Let's hear it for our newcomers.
01:12:20.860 Those who came to Canada, who chose Canada, and helped build Canada strong.
01:12:36.860 Let's hear it for Know the Nine.
01:12:48.860 Let's hear it for my four friends, four city councillors who helped me stand up for Canada.
01:13:04.860 Jennifer Winas.
01:13:09.860 Andre Chabot.
01:13:13.860 Angela D.J. Kelly, Andrew Mule, different backgrounds, different political views but when it came time to vote, your city council stood together to affirm the Calvary's place in Canada.
01:13:37.860 Let's hear it for Thomas Gazzle.
01:13:43.860 And while we're at it, couldn't we share it for Thomas and Cassette's hair?
01:13:52.860 And every volunteer who has brought us here tonight, Thomas, you've become an incredible
01:14:04.860 Alberta and Canadian hero.
01:14:07.860 And the next time I see, I'm going to bring a white hat that they told me that I didn't
01:14:12.860 Friends, we don't all vote the same way, we don't agree on everything, but we will always be forever Canadian.
01:14:25.860 A country where we stand together when it counts.
01:14:30.860 So, every one more time, let's hear it for the best city, in the best province, in the
01:14:43.660 best country in the world!
01:14:56.860 So, I asked this one job last, and now Calgary, I'm hoping you'll indulge me.
01:15:04.860 I can't do that, but that's somebody else's job, I think.
01:15:14.860 I want all of you to show the rest of the country what an Alberta welcome sounds like.
01:15:26.860 I want them to hear us from coast to coast to coast.
01:15:48.540 And I want them to hear us at the Peter Lockheed Hospital.
01:16:00.980 Friends, will you please join me
01:16:04.840 in giving the biggest-calibre welcome
01:16:08.780 to the Prime Minister of Canada,
01:16:18.540 Thank you for joining us.
01:16:48.540 What a crowd! What a celebration! What a country!
01:17:07.540 Your mayor's not bad either.
01:17:12.540 Trust Calgarians. Tell them they're coming to hear a few speeches and they turn it into a party.
01:17:22.540 They turn it into a celebration of the true North, strong and free.
01:17:31.540 We have the greatest country on earth reflected in this room.
01:17:49.100 Proud Calgarians, Proud Albertans, Proud Canadians.
01:18:03.100 We've heard from someone tonight.
01:18:07.100 Jeremy.
01:18:08.100 What's his name?
01:18:09.100 Marcus.
01:18:15.100 Thomas Bukasek.
01:18:18.100 Let me start thanking Thomas and all the Forever Canadian Volunteers.
01:18:29.100 From the Dion Volunteers down, you've knocked on the doors.
01:18:35.100 You've gathered the signatures, you've made the calls. You are fighting for Canada.
01:18:40.100 Jeremy and Debra, leaders who have continually stood up for Canada and Alberta's place at its very heart.
01:19:02.100 John Cornish.
01:19:04.100 i want to be on the right side of that guy that's all john cornish one of the thirty percent of this
01:19:15.620 province who came here from outside of this province came here from canada outside this
01:19:20.980 product came here and i'm an elson but i got to acknowledge that you became a champion
01:19:28.980 in football a true champion football and then a champion of our community and you know what
01:19:37.860 there is a common thread that runs through their remarkable stories and through their
01:19:45.620 service through their messages tonight john hit on it's the power of the team
01:19:55.780 because
01:19:59.380 the team helps us achieve far more together than ever alone and that is the canada that we're here
01:20:07.060 to celebrate tonight that is the canada that is the canada you are fighting for we are fighting
01:20:14.100 for when it matters the most and it matters it matters the stakes are high the stakes are high
01:20:35.220 this referendum let's be clear it comes at the worst possible time
01:20:44.340 the world has become more dangerous and divided
01:20:50.180 there are some outside our borders who are working to break us so they can't
01:20:56.580 We know, we know, we know that we can give ourselves far more than anyone else can take
01:21:09.580 away.
01:21:10.580 And we know, we know something else, we know that when we are united, we become even stronger,
01:21:21.580 even fairer, even freer.
01:21:24.580 At this pivotal moment, Albertans have a choice, can build a stronger Alberta and an even greater
01:21:45.300 Canada to leave for our children, or we can burden them with years of deep division in
01:21:58.800 Great-Nexerciseism.
01:22:00.300 No.
01:22:01.300 No.
01:22:02.300 Don't worry kids, with this crowd.
01:22:08.300 What we need is a decisive result on Monday to settle this question.
01:22:15.300 And right now, our country needs three things from you, from all elders.
01:22:32.300 First, mark your calendar.
01:22:36.300 This crowd knows, but I want everyone to know Monday is referendum day.
01:22:40.300 Vote now! Advanced polls are open through this Saturday.
01:22:45.300 Secondly, take a tip from the dress sense here.
01:22:53.300 Show your pride. Wear the maple leaf. Wear the sweater.
01:22:57.300 Tell your friends, your family, your co-workers why you are voting for Canada.
01:23:10.300 And third, I said three things third, bring a friend and vote like Canada depends on it because it does.
01:23:23.300 Don't let anyone tell you that this is already decided.
01:23:34.300 No, turnout will determine the outcome.
01:23:37.300 And don't be fooled by the idea that you can send a message with your vote.
01:23:44.260 This is not poker.
01:23:46.700 A vote against Canada is a dangerous bluff that will lead to years of deep uncertainty and lost opportunities for Albertans and for Canadians.
01:23:58.580 Our country, your futures, are too precious to play games with.
01:24:07.300 My friends, this referendum is about something much larger than any of us.
01:24:20.380 It's about the province and the country we love, and it's about what we can build together.
01:24:29.840 I know. Alberta is my home. I grew up here.
01:24:34.200 This province and this country have given me everything, my family, my education, my values.
01:24:51.480 My grandparents came here because Canada held a great promise, a country that's fair, strong, compassionate, and free.
01:25:04.200 It came to a country where hard work gets you ahead, and where the nation does its part,
01:25:15.600 building the communities, the railways, the ports, the pipelines, the broadband, and
01:25:20.100 access markets.
01:25:21.100 That is strength.
01:25:23.100 It came to a country where we help each other, where we look out for each other, and where
01:25:33.920 we stand up for each other that is compassion a country a country where you're free to be
01:25:47.680 who you want to be to speak your mind to worship as you choose to live your life as you wish
01:25:54.240 That is true independence. That is real sovereignty.
01:26:11.240 In Canada, in Canada, we have understood the fundamental thing.
01:26:46.240 and in his expression, security makes us our voice.
01:27:05.240 Say to my fellow Canadians, Albertans are justifiably proud.
01:27:11.240 proud of this great city proud of how a small port of limbo became the global energy capital
01:27:18.280 and host to the greatest outdoor show on earth
01:27:31.000 justifiably proud of how calgarians constantly push out the frontier and always grow stronger
01:27:38.280 diversity proud of how calgary and alberta welcome the best from across canada and from around the world
01:27:56.280 I'm proud of how Alberta has shaped Canada.
01:28:12.720 Our story as Albertans didn't start with my grandparents or yours.
01:28:19.560 Long before Alberta was a province, the Tsitsika, the Kanai, the Kikani nations of the Blackfoot Confederacy,
01:28:29.560 the Tsitsina and the Stony Nakoto nations called us as landfall.
01:28:39.560 And nearly, nearly 150 years ago at the Blackfoot Crossing they made Treaty 7 the crown.
01:28:49.560 Honoring Canada's history means facing the truth that these promises between nations
01:29:00.560 have been broken many times.
01:29:04.560 But because when something is not right, when it isn't fair, we don't hide it.
01:29:12.560 We don't walk away from it. We fix it together.
01:29:19.560 And because of that, we become stronger for it. That is Alberta. That is Canada.
01:29:36.560 So, way back in 1929, fighting injustice, Alberta's famous wives took their case all the way in England 0.99
01:29:45.560 and want recognition of women as persons under the law. 0.73
01:29:57.560 And that ruling called our Constitution a living tree,
01:30:02.560 and it's a tree with deep, deep roots in Alberta's soil.
01:30:07.560 1982, Alberta shaped the new Canadian Constitution.
01:30:13.560 Premier Peter Laughey helped secure provincial control over resources and he helped create
01:30:28.560 the amending formula for that constitution.
01:30:34.560 Sorry, can we get help?
01:30:39.560 Sorry.
01:30:40.560 Just make sure we have first responders there.
01:30:43.560 Are we okay?
01:30:44.560 No?
01:30:45.560 No.
01:30:46.560 Yeah.
01:30:47.560 They're at my 11 o'clock.
01:30:55.560 There's still somebody here.
01:31:00.560 This is fair with us.
01:31:04.560 I know it's difficult to give some space to them.
01:31:34.560 I'm not going anywhere, so I...
01:31:52.560 Canada, Canada, Canada, Canada.
01:32:04.560 Canada, Canada, Canada, Canada, Canada, that's right.
01:32:12.560 Thank you.
01:32:13.560 Canada.
01:32:14.560 How did you know that was my nickname?
01:32:40.560 Paris. There's a lot of people from MF2 to Calgary.
01:33:01.040 Can I go before we cover her?
01:33:10.560 how's nico nico's you know what nico's home alone actually i think that's okay
01:33:30.560 He's put on a little bit of weight.
01:33:35.260 No, he's, Nico, he's good.
01:33:37.260 He's good.
01:33:39.840 Nico's my dad.
01:33:40.840 He's good.
01:33:43.980 Somebody's keeping track.
01:33:45.380 Yeah, Nico.
01:33:46.280 Exactly.
01:33:48.640 Canadian.
01:33:49.480 Canadian guy. 0.82
01:33:58.680 You okay? 1.00
01:33:59.520 Yeah, okay.
01:34:00.220 All right, thank you, thank you for the first responders.
01:34:13.680 Thank you for you, you know.
01:34:21.160 Okay, I want to thank the teachers.
01:34:24.460 I want to thank the teachers, Jeremy.
01:34:34.680 I did want to thank the teachers, my parents' teachers.
01:34:38.120 My parents' teachers.
01:34:41.920 I need to get proud of it.
01:34:43.820 Jeremy taught me that trick.
01:34:46.700 I got a lot to learn.
01:34:47.820 Jeremy.
01:34:48.420 you know i was talking about albertans contributions shaping this country shaping
01:35:02.100 it through the constitution shaping it through women's rights but also throughout our history
01:35:09.060 albertans empowered the world fed the world and led the world look back the first well in turner
01:35:17.220 valley turning into an energy superpower today you look back you look back the first homesteads
01:35:28.500 many of them around lethbridge in the 19th century to farming two-thirds of all the
01:35:32.900 irrigated land in canada and raising our largest beef herd you look back
01:35:38.340 a century ago J.B. Culloch purifying the first insulin to a few so right now Richard Sutton's
01:35:49.620 pioneering work on frontier AI that's Canada made in Alberta you know living on the prairies the
01:36:07.440 The Alberta prairie, standing up for each other, helping each other, is bread in the bone.
01:36:14.560 Albertans have always lived these values so we can live them today.
01:36:20.000 From the 10th Battalion in the First World War, to the Calgary tanks at Dieppe in the
01:36:24.880 Second, the Calgary Highlanders and the King's Own Calgary Regiment in Afghanistan, Alberta
01:36:31.380 have defended Canada and our allies, and always will.
01:36:42.500 When the Bow River rose, volunteers rushed to meet the moment. The Canadian Armed Forces
01:36:48.500 worked right alongside them, and the stampede went ahead two weeks later, under the slogan
01:36:54.500 hell or high water. That's Calgary. You know, when fires bore through our communities,
01:37:06.500 Canada also responded. In Jasper, firefighters came from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island,
01:37:12.000 Quebec, Ontario, across Canada. Canadians gave $300 million through the Red Cross to
01:37:23.440 help the people of port mcmurray and albertans albertans have always given back just this summer
01:37:32.960 when fires ravaged communities in bc hundreds hundreds of alberta firefighters went to their aid
01:37:39.200 And as Jeremy just reminded us, just this afternoon, first responders, our police, firefighters,
01:38:00.900 rush to the scene of the horrific crash near Saddletown Station, risking their lives to save others.
01:38:11.160 Tonight, doctors and nurses are treating the wounded, and friends, families, and neighbors are consoling the bereaved,
01:38:19.220 because in Calgary, in Alberta, in Canada, we take care of each other.
01:38:30.900 Here, here in Alberta, we have always spoken French.
01:38:42.900 The travelers, these people who have traced our first routes
01:38:48.900 to St. Albert, Bonneville and St. Porte,
01:38:51.900 just to the students of St. Jean campus,
01:38:55.900 here we have never had to choose between Albertian or Canadian. We are all Canadians, Canadians.
01:39:11.900 I want to say a few more words.
01:39:41.880 words on unity, because faced with this more dangerous world, Canadians are choosing once
01:39:48.920 again to stand together.
01:39:53.160 There's lots of ways to do this, many of them fun.
01:40:00.440 It doesn't have to be hardship all the time.
01:40:03.300 Buying Alberta whiskey, taking holidays in the Rockies, coming to the Stampede, choosing
01:40:08.220 Canadian suppliers.
01:40:11.880 These are more than two, but these are acts of fun, but they are acts of solidarity repeated
01:40:28.000 millions of times.
01:40:29.720 And the threads of our country are being woven together anew.
01:40:33.320 You know, I won't sugarcoat it.
01:40:37.540 of those threats have needed to be repaired because
01:40:47.540 the frustrations that many albertans have felt are real you know growing up i remember i remember
01:40:55.620 how ottawa made albertans feel like our resources weren't our own and more recently we were made to
01:41:02.420 feel that our energy contributions were running against the tides of history what should have
01:41:07.700 brought us together began to divide us contributing to a half a century of politics that too often
01:41:15.300 pulled us apart so yes canada isn't perfect but we are the best
01:41:32.420 We are the best, and we are getting better. We are getting better.
01:41:42.420 You see it? We're working together in the spirit of cooperative federalism.
01:41:47.420 It's a mouthful. Let me tell you what it really means.
01:41:49.420 Calgary is at the center of this transformation.
01:41:54.420 Canada's major project office. It's new. It's headquartered right here,
01:42:00.420 right here making decisions about the projects that will build our country new ports new mines
01:42:05.620 new energy corridors one half a trillion dollars of new investment and together together we're
01:42:17.220 unlocking our full potential as an energy superpower including with the pacific link pipeline
01:42:24.020 it will add it will create more than a hundred and forty thousand jobs it will
01:42:33.080 reduce reduce our dependence on the United States
01:43:03.080 Careful, they might think that's election interference.
01:43:10.080 They're a little touchy.
01:43:17.080 We're not.
01:43:20.080 We're getting on with it.
01:43:21.080 We are getting on with it.
01:43:24.080 You know, these big projects,
01:43:30.080 They will generate the revenues we need to protect the social programs that Albertans rely on every day.
01:43:38.000 Health care, child care, dental care, national school food programs.
01:43:45.760 You know, this is true nation building and it will take a nation to build this pipeline.
01:43:54.320 we will build it through true partnerships with first nations
01:44:04.320 with british columbia with suppliers from across the country
01:44:12.960 and with foreign importers who want to trade more with canada the world's most reliable trading
01:44:24.320 Yes, Canada is building big again and Alberta is at the very heart of it.
01:44:38.000 Half a billion dollars to build the local infrastructure for tens of thousands of affordable
01:44:47.640 homes across this province. High-speed rail so you can all come up to Edmonton. Don't
01:45:02.260 forget, Red Deer will be on Red Deer too. $8 billion, $8 billion in defense investments
01:45:10.480 in Alberta over the next decade.
01:45:17.120 Yeah, we're building, and we're building
01:45:20.660 and securing new trade deals so our farmers
01:45:23.080 can get more for their crops and their livestock.
01:45:29.860 One fact, I gotta put a few facts in here,
01:45:32.980 media security.
01:45:34.080 Up 80% this year,
01:45:36.680 And why? Because Canada is the most connected country in the world now.
01:45:47.680 Tariff-free access to one and a half billion consumers.
01:45:51.680 And we are just getting started.
01:46:06.680 But if we're distracted and divided, we will miss these opportunities.
01:46:15.520 However, if you choose Team Canada on Monday, Albertans will go on powering the world, feeding the world, and healing the world.
01:46:36.680 My friends, nobody achieves greatness on their own.
01:46:47.760 Not a pro athlete as good as John Cornish, even as good as John Cornish.
01:46:55.220 Not one great city on a vast prairie, not a single province.
01:47:04.460 It takes the team, it takes the team.
01:47:07.620 Those who came before us understood that.
01:47:10.740 They came here with hope and with ambition.
01:47:15.360 They endured the hard winters and the lean years.
01:47:18.860 They built homes, businesses, farms, communities.
01:47:23.680 They stood by their neighbors.
01:47:26.220 And together, they built something greater
01:47:29.100 than any of them could have imagined.
01:47:32.260 And now it's our turn.
01:47:34.320 It's our journey.
01:47:36.220 Because Canada was never merely a bargain
01:47:39.580 struck between provinces.
01:47:41.800 It was never a series of transactions
01:47:44.320 of gives and gets of gross and net.
01:47:47.900 Canada is a promise that is so much greater
01:47:52.180 than the sum of its parts.
01:47:55.560 It is a promise.
01:47:56.720 The promise that together we will take all that we have been given and we have been given
01:48:09.420 the greatest country in the world and we will take it and make it so much better for all
01:48:15.440 of us. That promise is for each of us to keep. Let this generation of Albertans choose to
01:48:31.080 build up, not break down. Let Alberta lead, not leave. To make Canada stronger, to make
01:48:39.460 it fairer, to make it freer. So, in my public service announcement, remember these three
01:48:50.300 things. Mark Monday, next Monday, October 19th on your calendar. Show your pride. Bring
01:48:58.700 a friend and vote like Canada depends on it because it does this this is our Canada this
01:49:13.400 is our future let's build it together thank you Calgary
01:49:28.700 Thank you.
